I gotta say, guy calling out "That's Duncan, you can tell by the way he is flying." .. Bro that is exactly how Paul knows its him in the book. Dennis' ability to get by removing all the inner monologues by portraying things visually and making the audience say it themselves is fantastic. The same was with the spice harvester rescue scene, so many reactors had said "this Duke is a good man, I like this guy." Which was the inner monologue of Kynes in the book.

They explained how the shields worked in the training session - A slow blade can penetrate the shield. When they're wearing the shields they still have to be able to breathe through it. If you notice the dart that got Leto and the bombs that took out the Atreides ships both slowed down to enable them to pass through the shields.😊

@@Rakhim99they do go over this in the book, but it's not so clear in the movies, but the shields are extremely effective at blocking things moving fast, that's why almost no one uses guns, the shields will block them every time, the Fremen use mauler pistols because they live in the desert where you cannot use shields because of the worms. So with the swordplay, it's all about deception, feinting your opponent and striking when they are unaware, the great sword masters (Gurney and Duncan are legends in their own lifetimes for being sword warriors and are renowned as some of the best in the universe) train extensively to learn the limits of the shield, and time their strikes perfectly to deflect and penetrate their effects.
This is actually illustrated really well in the film by the scene where they Atreides soldiers are being attacked from both sides on the stairs by the Harkonnens and Sardukaur. The Atreides are making light work of holding back the Harkonnens but the Sardukaur are next level sword masters compared to the regular infantryman of the Atreides and cut them down shields and all.

When Paul fights to the death near the end, it takes him a few seconds to adjust as he's been trained using a shield. Bullets won't penetrate a shield, and laser vs shield causes a MASSIVE explosion, so they don't use them often.

The Fremen weren’t specifically described as brown in the book. But it was implied they had Arab/Berber origins. The black thing for the film is…new (DEI). It’s never explicitly said that the Atreides are white, the Duke is vaguely described as olive skinned. But then again they got a Greek name soooo. Chani was described as a redhead though, not so much like Zendaya. And Dr. Kynes was specifically described as a tall blond tanned white man. Like Lawrence of Arabia.

In Dune, advanced alien life MAY exist somewhere out there in the universe, but, it’s so extremely rare and space is so incomprehensibly vast that it’s never encountered by humanity. Shields make projectiles somewhat obsolete. The shields reflect objects with high speed. The higher the speed the more the shield deflects the attack. Thats why, in universe, they cant use lasguns around shields because if they connect the result is an atomic explosion, because you can't really get much faster than the speed of lasers. Objects moving slowly can get by shields.

I mean personal preference is personal preference, but the reason Frank Herbert wrote the second book Dune Messiah is because people didn’t fully comprehend the message when the first book came out. So I would say Messiah is for sure mandatory because of that and it’s also awesome. After that the books get more weird sci fi and so depending on preference some people think the books just get better and better and others aren’t as big of fans. I would say if you like Star Wars you would like the later books because Star Wars can be kinda weird too at times.
From what Denis has said recently, his plan is for sure three films. But in terms of the books after that, he has to wait and see how he feels after Dune Messiah if he’s up to undertaking adapting them. He has said he would support another director taking on the mantle as well. So I guess we just have to wait and see what happens.

For some 3eason the modern Human mind cannot comprehend that this movie only covered the first 1/3 to 1/2 of the first book. It was just made to set up the characters. The Houses. The Organizations in the World of Dune. Also set up the Politics and the behind the scene motives of all the groups. It did that perfectly. There were many viewers though that wanted the complete story of the first book to be told in Part 1. Silly notion. Why have a Part 2 then?. But as a huge fan of the Book. This movie did the best job in telling the story as Herbert wrote it, But Herbert was a tricky writer. He has many tricks and surprises in store for those that continue the saga of Dune. The reason he has a gun at the end is because the fremen can't wear shields, and not one really can in the open desert, so they can shoot there, but because they love their ritual combat and because the need for guns in the universe is rare, they still use knives mainly.

I highlighted recommended giving the documentary, Jodorowsky’s Dune a watch. It helps to make clear the question of if Dune is adaptable.
There are 6 books. I always recommend reading the first two, (the second one is more of a continuation of book one and is somewhat shorter than the others as a result,) books because they are a complete arc.
Then continue on to the last four books if you feel compelled. Most people’s favorite book of the series is usually the 4th or 5th books.
Yeah, Denis Villeneuve even asked to shoot parts one and two at the same time, the studio was like, “start with one, then we’ll see,” and after they wrap shooting we get the pandemic, so they couldn’t travel back to Jordan even if they wanted. I think the success of Part One did lead to Part Two getting the camera upgrade though.
Whole lore about why the tech is low-tech. The Fremen, (who had that gun,) do not use the shields because they drive the works into a frenzy. The soldiers do not use the guns because the shields deflect fast-moving projectiles. Lasers making contact with the shields will create some sort of feedback loop which climaxes into a nuclear-level explosion. The rest of the reasoning for the low-tech is answered in the lore.
When the emperor took the planet from the Harkonnens & gave it to the Atreides it created a motivation for the Harkonnens to attack the Atreides, (two families that are already adversaries.) The Emperor basically picks a side by providing military support, especially w/ the use of the Sardukar, (who are from a prison planet-Not a house.) BUT, the emperor has to be sneaky because if the other houses learn that the emperor made that happen there would be general warfare among the houses, (like a World War scenario.)

these are the ways you could read the series:
Just Dune: a pretty much self contained story, recommended for everyone who wants to check out the sci-fi classic
Dune Messiah: It's more of an epilogue to the first book taking place some years later, and the book is not very long. Good place to stop if you just wanted Paul's story.
Up to God-Emperor of Dune, or the Golden Path story: The film ride. no point in reading Children if you're not gearing up for the big one. Just a heads up: it gets pretty weird. Some people say that God-Emperor is the best book of the series, and the one Herbert wanted to write all along. But also understand that it's a slow book, focused on dialogues on philosophical concepts. The ending does give a good close to the overall story so far.
Heretics and Chapterhouse: takes places thousands of years after God-Emperor. It gets absolutely wild in the weird stuff departament and Frank starts inserting his fetishes to an uncomfortable level. It's universally agreed that they're not as good as the previous ones. They also end on a kind of a cliffhanger, and Frank died before writing the final one. Only recommended if you really want more Dune, and are ok with loose ends.
Son's stuff: don't ever touch it. They are poorly written cashgrabs, and Brain and KJA fundamentally misunderstood the world of Dune and themes that Frank was trying to get across

The reason that there are no guns is that bullets will just be stopped by shields. Even in sword fighting the blade has to enter the shield slowly to be effective. In the book when Paul is fighting Jamis (without a shield) he struggles to kill Jamis because he is still fighting Jamis as if he has a shield. It makes Stilgar ask Jessica why Paul is toying with Jamis.

Fun fact: In one of the Star Wars extras they show Lucas's original notes and I paused it and read them and he wrote that Leia couldn't be interrogated by torture because members of the royal house were trained to withstand torture, which immedately reminded me of the Bene Gesserit training. So, I wonder if the royal houses of the planets in Star Wars were more like the Great Houses of Dune in his head.

27:35 about the shields (you guys would know it by now but I'm still saying xD)... They're quite simple actually: the shield will block a bullet, but if you use a blade and hit below a certain momentum/speed (below a full throttle blade attack, by slowing the motion just when you hit - which requires some training), it will penetrate the shield. Which is why they're fighting melee with blades instead of using ballistics. However, some bombs have been designed so that they halt when getting to a shield, "screwing" their way in and then explode under that shield (which gives out nice visual fx as we've seen during the invasion). The downside is that their "vibration" (smt like that) makes them useless in the desert as this would attract the worms.

Frank wrote 6 books and, planned a 7th. The 1st 4 are a complete arc. After Frank's death, the publisher wanted Brian to continue them. For about 20 years he said no. When he finally decided to take a crack at it, there had beef nothing new for decades. He and Kevin J Anderson decided to fill in the gaps with missing history, before, after &, alongside the original books.
Hunters/Sandworms of Dune take characters & notes from Frank for "Dune 7." The action is better written in those books, tho Frank got better with action be the 3rd book. There is 1 major plot point from Frank's last book which is missing. It ends well, tho.

With the shields their combat of blade fighting is all different notice their attacks are peircing and close because only a slow movement can penetrate the shields like scratching ur nose or wiping your skin, so combat mimics cqc. No attacks that are strong or broad, notice how characters kill their opponent pulling their blade away or back, very great attention to detail.

guns tend to be be defeated by shields, so melee was the prevalent combat.
Shields stop fast objects, slow object (knives, swords) can penetrat them.
In the book there were also lasguns. These caused shields to explode (and the lasgun also explodes). I am not sure if they are including these in the movies.

The general consensus on which books to read is: how weird do you want to get? All six Frank books if you're okay with pretty weird, just the first two if weird is not your thing but you want Frank to make his most important point, and books 3 and maybe 4 if you want to see where he's going with it but you don't care about the details.
The miniseries, Frank Herbert's Dune, is pretty decent if you don't mind low budget, and the sequel series Children of Dune (covers books two and three) is even better.
    As for the politics...
The Emperor is absolute... is a sentence you are legally required to agree with, because these are feudal lords whose legitimacy over the peasant class comes from the same system that legitimizes the Emperor's rule over them.
In reality, though, the Bene Gesserit, the Spacing Guild, the Tleilaxu, and several Houses' prized mentats all basically know how to exert power over the Emperor's decisions.
Angle 1: no spice = no space travel = no empire to rule over and profit from. Threaten to go to war with the House that governs Arrakis, or just pour money into "private" snuggling operations that weaken that House... well, you can only get punished if you get caught, but the Emperor can only overlook it if the spice is still flowing to the Spacing Guild, who have a total monopoly on navigation.
Angle 2: As head of House Corrino, the Emperor is "just" another Great House ruler, and the other Houses have ancient beefs with them. He has the strongest military, the most vicious troops, yes... but it wouldn't take a unanimous coalition of the Landsraad to outgun him, just a few key players. If the Atreides family (a Great House slowly fading away) could attract some underdog sympathy, they might actually end up with a coalition that could genuinely threaten his rule. And enough Houses carry grudges against Corrino's time on the throne that they won't lift a finger to save him.

26:43 yep there pratically are no guns bc the shield made them useless, it’s block any projectile faster than 9 cm per second and since gun’s projectie are much faster than that they are instantly blocked. For the laseguns (laser-guns) it’s another story, when the laser touched the shiel it reacts by creating a reaction similar to a nuclear explosion in the shield but also in the source of the laser (the gun), so basically if a lasegun is used against a shield, everyone is fucked: the shooter, the target and everyone in the perimeter.
For all this reason they all agreed to only fight with swords or melee weapons bc that’s the only viable option

The reason the emperor lured House Atreides away from their home planet is that it was basically impossible to attack them there since they have ruled there generations and had an entire planetary populace that would have come to their defence. On Arrakis, they only had their own soldiers to rely on and what little native population that existed, was not going to come to their aid when they got attacked.

I like to think about the sheer mechanical stresses on the wings of the ornithopters. At that length, they are defying known materials science and mechanical engineering. There's no material we could build at that length and beat that rapidly which wouldn't tear itself apart. Because "thinking machines" are banned in this setting and have been for thousands of years, they've devoted all of their technological progress to mechanical engineering and materials. They are the masters of grand structures. Immense starships, immense buildings. Everything has an understated elegance to it, like the gigantic starship that is a plain sphere.

The shields prevent guns from working. They sometimes use special darts that will slowly burrow through a personal shield but you can knock such a dart away with your sword. (Unfortunately Leto didn't have his sword when the dart hit the shield in his back. He should have pulled the weapon out of the maid's body and used it.) Blades can penetrate a shield so everyone is trained in blades. They also have lasers but only use them on machines and people that don't have shields because lasers hitting the shields results in the equivalent of a nuclear explosion.

There was a war with the machines. That's why everything is analog. There is one visible power. The emperor and the houses under him. But they can overthrow him. So they have some power over him. There are two covert powers probably as big as the emperor that operate in secret. Bene Gesserit that manipulate over the centuries in partial secret. The navigator's guild that wield the ultimate power. No one can travel through space without them but they don't openly wield that power. So the emperor appears to control the two secret powers on the surface. Or that's my understanding of it all. It's all European history with an emperor added in. The different royal's from different countries (all cousins) and sometimes those royals are overthrown internally in the country, the catholic church and the merchant navies.

I would say 20+ thousand years in the future, who knows what people will look like.

The shields stop fast moving things. Like bullets, missiles and bombs. They can only be penetrated by slow attacks. Hence why guns are useless-The reason the Harkonen/Sardaukar succeeded in destroying the Atreides aircraft and breaching Arrakean, was that Dr. Yueh destroyed the shield generator guarding the city.
Shield combat is based upon swift defenses and slow attacks. Slow slicing, boring stabbing motions, grappling. The idea is to move in such a way to get your foe off balance, so you can deliver the slow death.

People don't just say Star Wars was influenced by Dune George Lucas said he was influenced by Dune. That's not to say that's bad. The epic scope of Dune would n't exist without Middle Earth The Hobbit & Lord of the rings.
3:29 This is our Galaxy these people are descended from people from Earth It is actually 20,000 years from now. 10,000 years from now a robot uprising was put down. Thinking machines were banned. That's why they have to use spice to figure out how to fold space a computer could do it but they don't have them.
26:18 Shields prevent you from being shot with an ordinary bullet like we have. You have to use a special weapon that slows down and slowly penetrates the shield. That gives a defender time to react and perhaps destroy the projectile.
27:30 No if you hit a shield harder you will bounce off harder. You have to slow down and push with steady Force. That's what those special weapons were doing to the shielded ships.

Dune has advanced technically yes but AI is STRICTLY forbidden big war almost wiped out humanity way in the past. The Emperor rules the known universe and is actually as powerful as all of the great houses put together (currently there are somewhere around 100). The shields are very affective against energy and projectile weapons but not against slow moving objects hence the blades and fighting style.

So the reason some people don't enjoy the following Frank Herbert Dune books is because, with each passing book, they become increasingly philosophical. Less action, more talking about ancestral memories and guiding humanity down a golden path and stuff like that. If you like that kind of stuff, the books are excellent. If you don't, you might not enjoy them as much. I still think they're worth a try.
