I found that starting out with asymmetrical pinstriping gave me instant results I could live with, without trying to get two sides identical right out of the box, and getting disappointed.... Then as I got more confident, I started doing more symmetrical/traditional stuff....

He said something to the effect of: The mark of a good artist is not how few the errors are; it is how he fixes the errors. GREAT JOB! I'm headed to the shop to play with my swords now.
A nicely done introduction to pinstriping. Good info with little downtime in the video. Nice job. WRT oil on the brushes, mineral oil (or the motor oil, though I like the clear mineral oil better) is non hardening, and will help displace the hardening oils in the enamels in addition to keeping oxygen away from them. Bottom line is that your brushes won't stiffen up in storage. You can also scrub the enamel oil out with soap/water, but that's hard on high end natural bristles, so this is better.
thanks for the dot trick!! i wanted to mention that always starting with your non dominant hand side. so you're right handed start on the left of center, it's easier to replicate.
@Brian Williams, one other "Trick" that I was taught by an old timer pinstriper, was to use a compass from an old draftsman drawing set to get perfect circles especially around trunk locks and door locks. The draftsmanship compass has two blades that are charged with ink between the blades and draws the circle onto the paper, he advised me to file down the blades until they were blunt and they pick up the paint like the ink. The only time that he used vinyl tape was over the trunk lock hole for the point of the compass to pierce and not move around. He said that before vinyl tape he'd carry around corks of different sizes to stick into the trunk lock and get the centre. Clever stuff!

Doug...my friend.. you have the BEST beginner video on here! just letting you know this! i have seen others on here...your's has been the most informative and easy to view! You are helping me learn how to do this...so thanks buddy! Voodoo larry uses 10w30 too for his brushes..and the ol' magazine trick too...so i think between learning from your tuitorial and asking questions to my buddy Mark Hagstrom as well.. i should be good to go! * just waiting on my paint that's in transit*

Very inspiring vid :) Now,,I wonder how much a design like that cost the customer?? Maybe it's already in another video,,this is the first one I have viewed...Well worth watching several times,,he is very talented! Love the color choice as well,,really illuminated! :)
Ryan love your airbrush work man! DoRr is a great striper! Wish I could apprintace under a great striper like him! Been a tattoo artist for over 20 yrs! But just because you can tattoo don't mean you can stripe letter or airbrush! That's a fact lol!
I began pinstriping today on some paper with One Shot and reducing with enamel, is there a reason why the paint is fading kinda instantly? Could it be the paper? I spray painted it with a flat black enamel.
@ngadino more, he's using 1shot enamel paint so it doesn't need a clear coat. In fact, enamel paint sometimes react with acrylic paint and cause them to blister and bleed. House of Kolor does some amazing pinstriping acrylic paints that "feel" like enamel paint as you're pulling a line but they dry very quickly and can be buried under clear. It's all about how you want your pinstriping to look.
@@joseywales3789 I still need to learn in this matter because I have tried applying enamel paint with a clear coat finish and it really takes patience to avoid curling in the final result. thank you friends for the information always keep your health 🙏🏾🙏🏾👍🏾
Only question I have is if this paint you use is ok to use over a clear coat or do you need to apply a clear afterwards ? and if I wanted to stripe a motorcycle tank do I need to use a special paint to not require a clear coat afterwards ? Awesome work by the way, and great hands man.
Excaliber's have green wrap plus a shorter hair length. This looks like an old Mack 10 series blue wrap that has darkened over time from paint and motor oil he uses to clean and preserve it.
A lot better than that other pinstriping video with the campy 60's music that didn't tell me jack. (Guy doing the pinstriping may have been good, but video was useless in terms of instruction.) At least the related videos on the side had this one at the top. :)

To store the brush you can use listed oil.
Wrap it with a cloth.

Just a quick Question, does it matter if it is enamel? Could u possibly use other types of paint?
My brush seems to have a kink in the hairs at the tip- it curves off like a check mark... How do u fix it?

Is the brush excaliber ? Not to many brush have black wrap mack king 13 is good beginner brush dont have to trim
