I also prefer fresh takes, but isn't this also the first time they've made highly accurate g1 figures in the mainline? I could be wrong, but I think every other time has been an homage rather than an actual attempt to recreate what we see onscreen with modern tech. I say let them have it, I'll be happy as long as I get some interesting figures.
My favorite era is probably rotf / hftd too. I feel like they really hit their stride with movie toys or (even better) movie-like toys. Original designs that were not limited by a model made for the screen, yet still had the engineering and aesthetic.

No, not really... Before you continue whining about G1, consider the fact that WITHOUT G1, there'd be NO G2, NO BW/BM, NO RiD, NO Unicron Trilogy, NO Bayformery movie $#!t, NO Animated, NO Prime, No Cyberverse, NO Rescue Bots, NO NOTHING... JUST Gobots probably...
So go ahead and do your whining & complaining about G1, but while you do that, JUST remember that if the rest of US G1 fans weren't buying and demanding the bulk of the TF stuff Hasbro produces... YOU and others LIKE YOU, couldn't get ANY of the figures from series' YOU prefer, at ALL, because for the most part, there's NOT enough of YOU to support entire lines, WITHOUT US putting OUR money down too...
I'm not a G2 OR a BW/BM fan AT ALL, but I don't go around whining about Hasbro producing THOSE figures for fans of those lines to enjoy, because they took up slots that COULD have been used for a deserving G1 update figure... Do you know WHY?
For ONE, I'm not a selfish whiner, and I actually LIKE it when OTHER people get some figures from lines THEY enjoy. If I don't like them, I don't have to buy them, but I don't whine about them getting something I DON'T care for myself. Also, if it's a cool figure that maybe I wouldn't normally like, I can buy one too, if I want.
Secondly, even if I DON'T LIKE a particular TF line, I STILL respect where it came from (G1) and what it represents, with the potential to be something really good... Even that Bay crap, which I hate watching and 97% of the toys, occasionally has some good stuff.
Basically, it begins AND ends with G1, whether anyone likes it or not. That's just how it is.
Constantly whining around about it doesn't do YOU, or anyone else, any good, BUT IT does annoy people, like that constantly buzzing around in your face little gnat during the summer... JUST saying.
Learn to appreciate, or at least develop some respect for certain things, instead of whining relentlessly about them. You'll be a lot happier in life. ALSO, THIS IS A HOBBY, learn to ENJOY it!!! Don't let it control your life.
For the record, as I mentioned, I'm NOT a G2 OR BW/BM fan, BUT when Hasbro produces a GOOD updated (G3) figure derived from those lines, I buy it. I've bought several of the BW inspired Kingdom figures this past year, ALONG WITH those G1/G1 Movie updated figures, and I look forward to hopefully picking up some 2001 RiD inspired update figures for my collection, as I still have MOST of the figures from that line, but would love G3 versions... Same with G2, Unicron Trilogy, etc.,
Stop whining about things and just ENJOY WHAT YOU HAVE... Eventually, they'll produce what you want. 😉😅😅

I personally think that we're actually in one of the best moments of transformers right now. The thing that really has made all the WFC trilogy that great to me is the coherence in scale and styling, and the fact that we now have a minimum standard articulation. Of course the plastic is nothing compared to the materials they used to implement in the beginning of the line, but in comparison to what we've gotten in the last 10 years, now the plastic is in an acceptable degree. Another thing that I really consider an improvement is the engineering becoming ultra efficient, making the toys more intuitive while giving space por good articulation. The mayor downside has to be how irregular the QC has gotten, that's the big reason I try to keep me away from Studio series, even I do like the designs, but the geewan stuff and Beastwars too have been so far pretty solid.
Now in terms of design, I do think the re imagining factor was great, but after re-imagining the designs tons of times in every single sub line, having some stuff closer to the source material was good too. Of course I really miss the old quality plastic and the separation of the clear to the solid plastic, but I do believe that the more clever engineering going on right now really makes up for the lacking points.
Now I'm really concerned about the pricing, but is more because how stupidly expensive the dollar in my county has been in the last years goddamnit

    Okay, THANK YOU.
I’ve recently been looking to pad out my G1 ‘modern’ collection. Up until now I’d really only stuck to heavy IDW-centric stuff. (Gen Magnus, Springer, Skids, that sorta stuff!)
But now I wanted to get the full cast. Wheeljack, Sideswipe, Tracks, .. and in choosing… I went with the ‘CHUG’ era ones. Like when looking to get a new Wheeljack (which just arrived today) I went with the Generations one. Someone asked me ‘why not just get the newest ones?’ And I couldn’t quite explain why I didn’t really love the look n feel of the new ones, but you hit the nail on the head. It’s about the quality, the heft, the feel. And in large part still also it’s simply because of aesthetic. The ‘older’ CHUC stuff just had more visually interesting designs and most importantly it had the most fun transformations. New ones feel too simplified. They’re effective, that’s for sure. But I love the creativity of the old ones, that would impact the robot mode more substantially.

  • @NeilBlumengarten

I'm definitely biased towards the newer ones because G1 was my childhood, and I was out of collecting from 2008 to 2018.
To me, the current toys look like robots, but some of the older ones look like humans with armor pasted on. Red Alert really feels this way.
I think the older Wheeljack's chest goes down too far. It looked like he's wearing a bib of some kind.
That being said, I see Generations Sargent Kup is available for less than $20 USD on eBay, so I might give him a try. He's the one I like the best of the three you spotlighted.

Not sure this video was at all necessary. The new toys are objectively more show accurate and toon accurate, and many would argue (including myself) that we’re currently in the golden age of TF generations toys. But none of that matters because you very rarely look at these things with a proper eye because you’re so obsessed with the older toys. Which is totally fine, to each their own, but it doesn’t make for a good video concept when everyone following your channel knows no matter what you’ll choose old toys. Anyways, good luck moving forward.

I think overall its very dependant on the figure. Both lines have big ups and downs. I think the newer lines have definitely made their quality and standards in terms of transformation and articulation more consistent, but that means you get less stand out figures. The older lines to me, were a bit all over the place. You'd get some incredible figures, but others were just ok. Some of the newer stuff just feels like a mini masterpiece though. Vehicle mode has lots of style but not enough to make up for the robot. Old Red Alert looks like a G1 repaint on Unicron Trilogy. Ot a bad thing, but paint him blue and watch him pop.i do agree with you on Kup. The old Generations mold is a vast improvement. I think it all really depends on one’s priorities. I used to be the guy who would have gotten all 3 Kups. Nowadays I’d probably only get one, maybe two considering the uniqueness of the 2012 version. Though I’d probably go with the Titans Return Kup as opposed to the Studio Series, G1 accurate enough for my taste while still being a well built figure!
Typically, my first priority is a functional and good looking robot mode, what that look is doesn’t matter. What does matter is how that figure looks among other figures (ex: Cliffjumper has to be the same height as Bumblebee; the Seekers all need to be the same mold; etc). Matching aesthetic is also important to me. Not to say that a Cybertron mold doesn’t have a place on my Generations shelf, but sitting Botcon Scourge next to Kingdom Cyclonus doesn’t look right to me. So a lot of times I get a lot of newer figures because of their more unified aesthetic.

I was tempted in getting the SS86 one,but I felt the headsculpt was bad and the arms look too emaciated. 2011 Kup looks old and grizzled in a good way imo. However some older figures were duds like Universe Galvatron. Kingdom Galvatron is probably the finest CHUG iteration of him. I do like them experimenting with alt modes sometimes like Universr Onslaught and his swat form. Siege Ironhide is significantly better than Universe Ironhide imo. I'm just rambling but this was a good idea for a video.

In my opinion, old Generations (and the original CHUG lines in general) is generally better. Engineers weren't limited by having to emulate the G1 look, resulting in vehicles that arguably looked better than the G1 modes, and featured innovative transformation techniques. The weapon storage was great. It truly lived up to the "Robots in Disguise" motto; the accesories complemented the alt mode instead of getting in the way. And let's not talk about partsforming.
Obviously, there are exceptions, I think the 2008 Ironhide/Ratchet mold suffers from too many design flaws (sunken neck, bad articulation, giant backpack) to be considered good.
While Universe's "Datsun" mold (Bluestreak, Smokescreen, Prowl) is good, WFC's is better. Other exceptions include Warpath, Hot Rod and Cyclonus, while their old molds are nice on their own, they just don't compare to the WFC/SS86 versions

Transformers are fun toys first and the most important part of a Transformers toy is transformation. It's literally the main gimmick and name of the brand.
Plastic comes second and the plastic on old stuff is WAYYYYYYYYY better. I said it before and I'll say it again, this plastic's particles hold together so powerfully, their density can absolutely crush the sun
    The designs are more realistic
There's more charm and nostalgia with the old stuff
Ball joints and screws are much easier to repair than pins
    More features and references
Yeah old stuff is the bomb and not just for Generations, but other shows, especially the movies.

I like the reinvention of Chug more than slavish accuracy ngl I do like the diversity we have been getting recently.
Wheeljack is definitely better as an older figure IMO, The old Race car does look nice but you would never see that on the road, that would be something in a trailer rather than on the road, even if it was a retired Race Car because then it would more likely be on display when not used on a race track. The 2010 Wheeljack is definitely still my go too and I keep trying to get myself to buy it but all the bids I leave, I forget to check up on lol. Also just gonna say, Tracks doesn't really have a good figure looking between Kingdom and Generations as that gen mold is 100% Wheeljack. I do need Exhaust though in that newer design.
Kup... basically has had no good toys XD, SS86 is meh and Generations Kup can be fiddly, and TR is just not feeling like Kup.
And Red Alert I wish there was an in between of, I like the Chonky design and the more smoothed out aspects but those legs are quite eh.

I don't have any iteration of the Earthrise Sideswipe/Red Alert mould (except for Gigawatt, which has a lot of problems although I'm not sure how many of those are the result of the retool) but I do have the Universe 2008 Sideswipe, which I always considered to be a bit of a pain to transform. I haven't handled it in a while so I don't remember the details, but I recall it having issues with parts getting in the way of other parts, not clipping together securely, etc. My Red Alert, however, is and always will be the Universe 2003 Inferno toy. Love that thing.
I also don't have Earthrise/Kingdom Wheeljack, but I do have Exhaust and while it's functional its vehicle mode is basically just a slab with a windshield on top, while the Generations one is kind of weird and clunky but a lot of fun to transform (and "weird and clunky" fits with Wheeljack's personality anyway.) The Prime version is also good if I want something sleeker and more straight-forward.
As for Kup, again I was never a huge fan of the Generations one since the spring-loaded parts interfere with transformation, but I've never handled the new version so I can't really compare it to anything.

The Quality of older toys is much better! My favorite line is Cybertron/Galaxy Force by Far, they were exactly as shown in the cartoon, the transformations were fun, the finish was amazing. The toys where the best quality, Unicron Trilogy had the best quality of all! Even Clear Plastic on Unicron Trilogy was Sturdy and good. Of Course there are letdowns like Cybertron repugnus... that things breaks over time just by looking at it... Which is a shame because the spinosaurus in that colors looks awesome! This new line in my book uses lower quality plastic which was used since the Combiner Wars Toyline... And well yeah the QC issues on the newer figures are present in a lot of them... It´s a shame. Older figures don´t have that problem.

Gotta say, my thoughts on SS86 are pretty fucking low. Not only is it G1 creeping into a place where it doesn't belong, two of the five figures I got have been defects. My Kup that I got from the three-pack with Jazz (who is the reason I got it) had a loose pin that caused him left arm to fall off and my Ironhide is unable to transform properly and his left arm pops off when swivelled. Them being the only two broken figures I've ever gotten from Hasbro really did a number on this line's reputation for me.

Also, can we talk about that soapy white plastic Hasbro is using and the many great figures its ruined lately? The old toys are better for playing with friends, (faster transformation/more durable frames), and the new toys are VASTLY superior for collecting and displaying, (way more detail/accuracy/articulation). Two completely different types of toys, for two completely different purposes. I have found that most people who aren't fans of the new toys, simply aren't fans of the "Transformers" franchise, anywhere near as much, as they are just in to the nostalgia of the old toys. 🤷
Edit: I'm actually confused as to which line the "G1" comparisons came from, cuz those are NOT the G1 toys we got in NA. 🧐

Late to the party, but my two cents. I recently got back into collecting transformers and I’m having a bit of a conflict with this same issue. Many of the new designs are gorgeous, but stale at the same time. They’re almost mini masterpieces of the cartoon figures and that’s cool, but I miss the “new take on old characters” thing that the old classics and universe 2.0 lines did. BUT, at the same time the reason I got out of collecting was because the old classics line felt hit and miss. Some figures like classics bumblebee and universe sergeant Kup were amazing - some of my favorite transformers of all time - but then others came out… janky as hell. I personally was very disappointed with generations Wheeljack, and mine is now a floppy mess with almost every joint loose and I have barely touched it in years.
