Altars is my favourite album of all time. The band to me was never really the same after Richard Brunelle bounced. Trey is an awesome guitar player but Brunelle’s emotional and melodic style was such a perfect marriage with Trey. They were just as good as Smith/Murray and Tipton/Downing as far as twin guitar attacks. Shame they couldn’t exhaust that relationship any further.
Formulas is my favorite. The more you listen, the more you love it. It has great atmosphere despite being the fastest and most aggressive form of the band. Death metal masterpiece. Easy top 5 album in the genre
Man, I agree. It’s extremely underrated. It’s the last Morbid Angel (maybe even be the last death metal) album that sounds organic. There’s no metronome, there are no overly processed drums, the guitar tones are still nice and crunchy. 10/10 for me

Blessed has always been number one for me- to be honest probably because it was the first death metal album I had a taped copy of in 1991🤣. As for the infamous ‘I’ album- what’s especially frustrating are the glimpses of goodness- Blades for Baal is an absolute banger. But yeah- not going to defend the album as a whole.

Morbid Angel. A band responsible for some of my favorite death metal releases ever….. and also for making…..well Coverkillernation said it best “Death Metal’s St Anger” S: Altars of Madness, Covenant A: Gateways to Annihilation, Blessed are the Sick B: Formulas Fatal to the Flesh C: Domination D: Kingdoms Disdained F: Heretic HARDCORE RADIKULT: Illud
1. Altars of Madness: Best pure death metal record of all time 2. Blessed Are The Sick: I love the classical and doom feel for this one 3. Covenant: Probably most exemplifies what OSDM was and is 4. Formulas Fatal to the Flesh: I can't help it, it may not be cohesive but damn is it twisted and brutal 5. Domination: Underrated and hella groovy 6. Gateways to Annihilation: Even groovier. 7. Kingdom's Disdained: Okay. Better than Illud 8. Illud Divinum Insanus: Morally and Creatively bankrupt in every sense
For me, Gateways was their peak, it's brutal, with incredible performances and some of the most evil vocals ever committed to tape. From there I take Blessed for that more in-your-face classic death metal fun.
Domination was the first Morbid Angel album I ever bought. I was 11 and 25 years later still my favorite MA album ever and probably one of my top ten favorite albums of all time!!
Morbid Angel is one of the absolute best and most influential death metal bands of all time. One bad album doesn’t take away from their legacy they’ve had on the genre. Here would be my rating for each album: Altars of Madness: 5/5 Blessed Are the Sick: 4.5/5 Covenant: 5/5 Domination: 4.5/5 Formulas Fatal to the Flesh: 3.5/5 Gateways to Annihilation: 4/5 Heretic: 3/5 Illud Divinum Insanus: 1/5 Kingdoms Disdained: 3.5/5
The first 4 albums Morbid Angel released are one of the best 4 album runs in metal history (along with Maiden’s Piece to Seventh, In Flames Jester to Clayman, Blind Guardian Tales to Nightfall, Slayer Hell to Seasons etc etc) but the few albums that followed deserve more attention despite the absence of David Vincent (I mean, he didn’t exactly save them in 2011) & while most death metal can succumb to riff salad & meandering structures, I feel like Morbid Angel are one of the few who’ve genuinely aged well & hold up to repeated listens.
With the recent release of Heimdal I think it would be interesting to hear you review Enslaved’s discography. One of my favorite bands and would interested to hear your thoughts on them
One of my favorite bands of all time, so I was really excited to watch this. I think the run of their first six albums is one of the strongest sets of albums in all of metal. I even love Formulas, for all of its insanity. It is a shame how far they fell in the 2000s, but hey, I can't fault them after releasing that much amazing material.
Morbid Angel was the band that got me into death metal. Never looked back at rap or pop. Development happens & once metal becomes part of your life that's when u know u have become a man 🤣😉🤘
My favorite album from them is Blessed are the Sick. I just LOVE the dynamics and experimentation of that album, and the lyrical content. I prefer when Trey allows the music to get more dynamic, because he is such a brilliant composer! Blessed dares to be unconventional, and doesn't adhere to the Death Metal formula, which somehow - in my book - makes it even more aggressive. It's a journey from start to finish. Just like Exodus' Pleasures of the Flesh was the psychedelic of Thrash metal, this album is the psychedelic of Death Metal. I simply love the Morbid Angel Universe with all my heart. Being an occultist myself I also appreciate Trey's lyricism, because it reveals a guy who is not just talking the talking, but also walking the walking. I-AM, I-WILL, I-CREATE indeed! Sumeria rules! Praise to Mummu Tiamat!!
You released this video just in time for their tour with Revocation (my current favorite) opening for them! Great way to pump me up for when I see them!
@@themetalmeltdownofficial they were fucking awesome, dave davidson was the best shredder at the venue! Crypta was badass, skeletal remains had some surprisingly fun grooves(i wrote them off initially as a generic new-school-old-school dm band) and Morbid was straight up alien. Trey azagthoth used a lot of feedback, squeals, whammy, wah-wah, and harmonics combined with lots of atonal riffs to create very gross sludgy hellish atmospheres. Revocation was also alien at times, but in a more clearly structured way like u could def tell dave practiced a lot of scale patterns for his solos.
Seeing them live Thursday night April 6th!!! Obviously, I'm excited, but their setlist includes 5 from Kingdoms Disdained and 2 from Heretic with NOTHING from Altars of Madness.
Illud Divinum Insanus apologist here... If you're expecting something dark/serious you'll be disappointed, but they'd hinted going this direction with Terror Of MechaGodzilla on Heretic. It opens with the hilarious Omni Potens, this leitmotif will repeat throughout the album and sounds a lot more Skeletor than Satan, which is the mindset to enjoy this album through, you're entering power rangers/godzilla territory. Too Extreme! is a hard hitting industrial song worshiping itself in a silly way that only adds to it, and is a fun fast song a-la Static-X. I Am Morbid is fun and anthemic, over the top larping in the same vein as Sabaton/Manowar, an ode to power metalesque fantasy fun. Destructos is their own kaiju/alien race, it really paints an alien invasion b-movie and has an infectious beat allthroughout, and is satisfying all the way through the blast beat explosion at the end. Profundis - Mea Culpa is a great heavy song especially. The lyrics throughout Illud are mind numbingly silly but if you listen to it the way you would limp bizkit you too will be able to live hardcore radikult and we will all someday tear it up as radicals together... At the least nobody could call this a sellout, it's clearly an artistic choice, so inspired that they even had a remix double album, Illud Divinum Insanus: The Remixes. Like the album these songs are hit or miss, but Black Lung, Dj Ruffneck, and Micropoint's I Am Morbid remixes, plus Synapscape's Too Extreme are especially worth giving a chance. There's even a goregrind/slam rendition by Mulk of Existo Vulgore, you'll probably like it more than the original. I especially love Kingdoms, it's got their heaviest most pounding production/atmosphere by far, Piles Of Little Arms and The Pillars Crumbling are standouts.
Man, Morbid Angel was on such a great streak in the late 80s and 90s. Then the 2000’s happened and it all went downhill. Heretic is kinda boring, Illud Divinum Insanus is terrible, Kingdoms Disdained is competent but unremarkable. I’d rate them like this: Altars of Madness: 9.5/10 Blessed are the Sick: 8.5/10 Covenant: 10/10 Domination: 8.5/10 Formulas Fatal to the Flesh: 7.5/10 Gateways to Annihilation: 8/10 Heretic: 5.5/10 Illud Divinum Insanus: 1.5/10 Kingdoms Disdained: 6/10
It was very sad seeing Trey in a recent interview in very bad physical and mental conditions. I honestly don't know if he is still able to make a record, he needs help. 😔💔
Alters of madness and terrorizer world downfall....I'm 48 and they still rank as 2 of my favourite albums from this genre....plus every bolt thrower release
I love Morbid Angel! Covenant and Altars of Madness got me into Morbid Angel when I was in Middle school. There is only one album that I dislike from Morbid Angel ( We all know which one is the worst lol) also my favorite Morbid Angel song is Visions From The Dark side
The old catalogue is legendary and pure classic Death Metal, but I've always been more into the Steve Tucker stuff (although 'Heretic' was kinda meh). 'Formulas' and 'Gateways' are my favorite MA albums and I really liked Kingdoms as well. Ofc 'Illud' was pretty... strange, but it still had some rippers on it as well. Too bad all the other stuff makes that album what it was.
Didn’t realize so many people liked Domination, need to go back and check it out again. Love Altars and I like Formulas pretty good, both of which I own. Been checking out Gateways past couple days
There first few albums were Amazing! That travesty from 2011 was really bad and Kingdom’s Disdained is very Mid! They are due for a good album I hope 🤞
A lot of people say Angelcorpse ape Morbid Angel but if you really listen to Domination, then Hammer of Gods by Angelcorpse, then Formulas Fatal to the Flesh and then look at the timeline of those releases - I ask who's aping who? Angelcorpse has always been way more extreme than MA and funny how MAs sound on vFormulas veers really close to Angelcorpse's. Personally - I think it's a case of bidirectional influences.
I have Illud on vinyl.. It's got a couple tracks on it I can stand but overall.. I really have no fucking clue how they decided to put this out lol. They should've started a side band to release this one. I like track #3 and track #4. That's about it. Existo Vulgore and Blades for baal. That's pretty much the end of that record for me lol
I bought the first two morbid angel albums when they came out. This is when cds came in cover art boxes. I have quite a small collection of cd boxes before they quit doing that. Your are spot on with illud divinum insanus. Death was the very first death metal i ever heard spiritual healing in 88. Then i purchased altars then ND harmony corruption. Great video. Also my recollection of time might be off
Alters of Madness was one of my first death metal albums years back and I played the shit out of that, but I haven’t got into the other ones so much. Gotta say I find David Vincent’s vocals pretty cheesy at times and the switch to a super-dry production on Blessed are the Sick was a bit disappointing for me. Been starting to listen a bit more to the Steve Tucker stuff and enjoying that. Meant to add that this might provide a good point for me to jump into their other stuff. The only one in my rotation, albeit infrequently, is Alters. Right now relistening to Blessecd after many years and enjoying it much more than I remember. Still think Vincent’s voice is a bit too dominating. The instrumentation is fucking amazing though I have to say.
It's hard for me to escape the feeling that, as fine a vocalist as he was, David Vincengt is kind of the "fly in the soup" sometimes. I honestly don't think DOmination is very good, even though that was the tour I first saw them on and everything. I think Morbid Angel really works best when Trey Azagtoth's weird, eccentric personality is at the forefront. Domination has a lot of Vincent and Rutan, with Trey seeming to take more of a backseat, and a result I think it sounds focused on Vincent's own dubious and vaguely fascist-sounding philosophy rather than on the Ancient Ones and evil spells. and then of course we have ILlud. Dave's back! Let's party! Yeah no, not really. ALthough I know Trey is a fan of the style generally it's hard to escape the feeling that all thee pseudo-industrial nonsense and toughguy lyrics are David's being allowed to do whatever he wanted with the band. They thought having him back would beeee GGooolldddeenn KKeeyy,,,, but the metalhead public didn't swallow. So then Kingdoms was just a frightened overcompensation and by the numbers deathmetal album. 1. ALtrs 2. Blessed 3. Formulas 4. Covenant 5. Gateways 6. Heretic 7. Domination 8. Kingdoms 9. Illud
THERE'S that rant on Illud I've wanted to hear in more detail for awhile! It is absolutely deserved though, Jesus CHRIST that album's horrible. Not as bad as people claim, but still, one of the worst Death Metal albums I've ever heard, next to Reek Of Putrefaction.
Trey is an old man now. You can’t just expect them to make albums as good as the originals becuase the originals were already made and if they made an album that sounds identical to altars, blessed or covenant y’all would bored becuase it’s the same stuff we already listened to a million times. Illud is a cool album when you understand that sometimes taking a risk and being experimental is okay. Too say it’s one of the worst metal albums when you’ve got bands like Korn or anything nu metal is a disgrace. I’ll listen to illum over nu metal, death core, metal core and garbage like that.
the vocals on BATS are WAY too high in the mix. Turn those down and turn up the guitars and maybe it's on par with the albums that bookend it but damn Vincent's vocals are twice as loud as everything else.
For me I love Covenant and Domination. I admit I still need to listen to all of their albums. I’m missing a couple. Might be controversial but Altars is not my favorite. I think it’s his voice and the production/quality just kinda eh for me. Instrumentally a fun time. Illud is fucking awful. So backstory when David left Morbid Angel he was in Genitorturers with his wife (I think his wife) and he did industrial music for a while. Why he thought it was a good idea idk but yeah… awful. Awful. Awful. Just watch. Illud will be an unappreciated album and it’ll become a cult classic. Just watch lol
awesome ranking my favourite morbid angel albums altars of madness 1989 blessed are the sick 1991 covenant 1993 domination 1995 my least favourite morbid angel albums formulas fatal to the flesh 1998 gateways to annihilation 2000 heretic 2003 illud divinum insanus 2011 kingdoms disdained 2017
I think that Illud is underrated and overhated. More than half of the album has no electronics and is pure death metal, and some of the industrial songs (like Too Extreme!) are actually good imo. I was never a big MA fan, so I don't feel betrayed by the album and I think it's a solid record. And Kingdoms is a really good one, one of their best.
I hated Illud because its the only MA album with songs I cannot stand. Radikult is ridiculous and cringy. I actually like Destructos vs Earth though believe it or not

I ❤ Altars. Killer job dude.
I actually think Heretic is their worst album
Doesn't make Illud Divinum Insanus better tho
I really like illud album, throw me rocks im ready. Maybe because i listen to a lot of music genres beside metal but i really dig the album.
Also my recollection of time might be off
When you meet someone online you haven't met them...
Review every amorphis album
That grocery store Led Zep shirt is tragic
Dawn of the Angry is the best track off Domination
Insanus is a good album i like it =)
Covenant is my favorite Morbid Angel album period
Great and hilarious reviews! I'd love to see you review the Celtic Frost discography!
I Like Illud Divinum Insanus.

How dare you hold this up to Reek Of Putrefaction lmao, genuinely offended.
@@themetalmeltdownofficial You could not pay me to like either album, honestly.
@@theaveragememelord759 i dont like reek of putrefaction either
But it alteast has a certain charm to it.
Ludwig Divine insane doesnt
Turn those down and turn up the guitars and maybe it's on par with the albums that bookend it but damn Vincent's vocals are twice as loud as everything else.
you can hear Vincent's mouth move at the start of fall from grace before the first line of the song lol
❤
I heard Jamie Horsley likes Illud divinum insanus
Yes, he does. Why though, I'll never understand lmao
@@themetalmeltdownofficial the only song from that album that I think is actually somewhat ok is I Am Morbid. But the rest is just no
Altars* not Alters
Oooh i got a challenge. Reviewing every Dream Theater album
Every album sucks. Thank u, next.
Its been 12 years now and people still almost unanimously hate it lmao, I can't see that happening.
Insanus > Heretic imo.... yeah i said it.
awesome ranking my favourite morbid angel albums altars of madness 1989 blessed are the sick 1991 covenant 1993 domination 1995 my least favourite morbid angel albums formulas fatal to the flesh 1998 gateways to annihilation 2000 heretic 2003 illud divinum insanus 2011 kingdoms disdained 2017
1. Covenant (9/10)
2. Domination (8/10)
3. Gateway to Annihilation (7/10)
4. Formulas fatal to the flesh (7/10)
5. Altars of madness (7/10)
6. Blessed are the sick (6/10)
7. Kingdoms disdained (5/10)
8. Heretic (4/10)
9. Illud Divinum Insanus (3/10)
Formulas is my favorite. Gateways is my least favorite. The ones after heretic don’t count. Just delete them off the universe. They never happened.
I stopped to listen to "where the slime live"
i think old school testament is better modern testament same with prong and metallica etc
I’m just gonna say it and run…I love illud divinum insanus…it’s one of my favourite records of all time 🏃🏻♂️
Love em.
I don't get all the praise with altar of madness, i find it on par with what was made at that time, nothing more nothing less.........
The was terrible by morbid angel the industrial was awful
I think that Illud is underrated and overhated. More than half of the album has no electronics and is pure death metal, and some of the industrial songs (like Too Extreme!) are actually good imo. I was never a big MA fan, so I don't feel betrayed by the album and I think it's a solid record. And Kingdoms is a really good one, one of their best.
I hated Illud because its the only MA album with songs I cannot stand. Radikult is ridiculous and cringy. I actually like Destructos vs Earth though believe it or not
@@MoveitorLoseit2 I'm not gonna defend Radicult...
whats worse? This album or Nightmares of the decomposed?
Hell yeah animations if desolation's ..with Mike Browning who moved on to nocturnus and other bands aye ...hell yeah all morbid angel albums I'm all ears on this one sir 😋🤘 💯 hails 😁⚒️
