A Fast Boarding Way No Airline Will Ever Use

- You may strongly disagree with an air company on what to call food or how hot it should be in the cabin. But there's one thing that both you and the airline probably agree on: boarding the plane takes WAY too long. It takes about 30-40 minutes, while in the 1970s, boarding time was only 15 minutes. How did they do that?

SUMMARY:
- People today are trying to save money, so they take as many carry-ons as they can rather than pay for checked luggage.
- Every extra moment the plane spends on the tarmac costs a small fortune ($1,000 a minute to be exact!).
- Today, most air companies use the back-to-front method of passenger boarding. This way isn't just the most popular, it’s also the least efficient!
- Every year, US carriers make more than $4 billion in checked-bag fees.
- There’s the outward-in boarding approach. MythBusters found this method to be the fastest one yet. According to this approach, passengers who have window seats get on board first.
- According to The Steffen Method, passengers board from the outside in, they take seats in every other row, and the process starts at the back of the plane.
- The main issue is that families, couples, or friends can't board together.
- If you're a passenger on Southwest Airlines, you'll get a boarding group and boarding position. After that, you just have to be fast to grab your favorite seat!
- Actually, each airline seems to have its favorite boarding method. For example, Virgin Atlantic and American believe that the more passengers board at once, the better.

I always fly Southwest. I felt it was much faster boarding time. Also always check for a YT (Young Traveler) on your boarding pass so that way you can board after A but before B. I also always get the back row because sometime they say it's full but it won't be.
I like how the video is exactly 10 minutes
I will say, on a recent trip to Vegas with a layover in ATL, Delta made a great effort to check carry-on baggage claiming “full flights” but at the same time hopefully eliminating some superfluous boarding time. Basically, it’s a good “risk” to take with Delta by spending a bit more time going though security with your carry-on with the ultimate outcome of having that bag checked for free at the gate. I am more apt to condone this practice when you don’t have a connecting flight/and or are heading home for the small chance of experiencing lost luggage. One of the principal reasons for off-boarding issues comes with passengers not realizing how to disembark by standing up in the isles without regard for passengers exiting in front of them.
Amazing video, and after having worked at an airport, I am thrilled to see any educational resource to assist passengers no matter the frequency in which they travel.
Love the window seats lol. Especially at night when you see all the lights on the tarmac light up it's just magical in a way.

I don't understand why so many people object to southwest's open seating. That's one of the big reasons I choose Southwest. I can usually get an aisle seat near the back and have room to spread out.
It cracks me up the people who fight for a middle seat in row 8 vs an open isle seat in row 15, as if getting off of the plane 30 seconds earlier is that important
And it's also statistically the safest part of the airplane too, lol.
I like how Tui do it on the Dreamliner ( go from the middle) (premium left, and economy right)

Hey BRIGHT SIDE, I personally like being seated in middle seats or window seats. Also, I personally just absolutely LOVE the "Chaos" method. I subscribed and hit that bell! Hope you all have a safe rest of your day or night depending on your time zome and love your videos! - A youtube user
My experience has been that most boarding delays are caused because too many people do not listen to instructions and are not ready to stow their bags properly. "Place your larger bag in the overhead bin, wheels first." Or in the case of the 737-800, "On its side wheels first." And there there is the passenger who asked the flight attendant, "Where is row 20." As one airline employee said, "On this particular aircraft it is right behind row 19."
If you can come 4 hours early and stand in the gate with your personal chair your first
Didn’t CPG Grey make a video about this?
Zach Ennis yes
Yea I feel like this is just a copy because they are using the exact same method.
Two months ago CPG Grey DID do this video (currently at 2.8M views), and this looks to be a blatant ripoff in a very similar format.
That's the Brightside channel, did you not realise that? Every single video is just a rip off from someone else. 😔
Yes
Thank god I've watched this video because I'm in consideration right now if I do wanted to move to my dad's in Alaska for opportunities for me, if so, I might fly there within either late summer or fall season and have a window seat of course. For me, I've actually flown and visited Alaska 2 times already, and I do prefer flying within the earliest part of the day possible as a possibility of shorter lines that is. The flight could be long, so I suggest that you bring whatever that'll entertain you, bring sound mufflers just in case if you want silence, a mini pillow, laptop/sketchpad, etc. For my upcoming flights in the future, as moving to Alaska (Still in consideration) is going to have 2 carry on bags (One camera bag and a US military backpack, and 1 large luggage (For clothes (vacuum pumped), toiletries, tripod, game system, etc). If anyone here is interested in seeing videos of Alaska and my adventures through life, let me know!
I am interested
@@crispyshaman4937 Awesome:)
If they could have multiple jet bridges that'd be great. I just came back from Europe and many of the airports used the air stairs, and you entered and exited from both doors based on where your seat was, and boarding was SO smooth. Honestly, air stairs is the most efficient because they bus everyone over at once so there's no last-minute runners once you've left the gate.

Every plane I have been on they do from front to back
Which airline(s)?
True, 1st class and priority seating first. Just flew Delta and the back boards last!
This. I have yet to fly on a plane that boards back to front. Everything I've ever flown has always been front to back.
Same here. I fly almost every week for work and it is always front to back. Maybe airlines in other countries?
me random
The airlines I fly with (Irish) have a certain size that your suitcase can be and a certain weight as well, so if your suitcase is too big or too heavy you just have to sort that out then and there!
It’s stressful when your suitcase is too heavy but there’s always somewhere to put the heavy items like in a handbag or something.
It makes it quicker to board once you’re past security.
(Wow that was long!!!!😂)
The last issue with first class is why I always loved the 757. Boarding through door L2 allowed first class passengers to turn left into the first class cabin. While they’re settling in with cocktails, economy could board by turning right. Many widebodies also have a similar layout.
The problem would be largely resolved if boarding gates were designed in such a way that the rear doors of the plane could be used.
Thats how it is done when I fly from Oslo. The back half just exits the jetway at the end and walks up stairs at the back
I have seen both Southwest and Alaska airlines use “dual boarding.” I have also seen other budget airlines do it since they do not have an actual gate anyway. The problem is walking across the tarmac poses a security risk and inclement weather makes for unhappy passengers. Therefore this method is only used during the daylight hours and only when the weather is favorable. The budget airlines seem to use a covered awning but if the wind and rain are howling people still get a little wet. This just makes them get on the plane faster.
Crosshead1 7
That’s the way planes board in Australia, half use front doors the other half use the rear doors. All major airlines board that way.
Well in cebu airport for cebu pacific they use front and back doors.
If you do this you will live longer
Love yourself, help people in need, smile often
nah man it's a troll. i didn't click it.
I have travelled on many airlines, back to front approach is the best way I have seen so far to easily board the aircraft. And with carry on there are few airlines which get our carry-on to check-in free of cost right before entering the aircraft unless it doesn’t have electronics or battery. This approach is also good as it avoids fighting for space in flight and no extra charges for the customer.
I love Southwest airlines boarding method! I can sit anywhere that I want and I am usually first on the plane. I am visually impaired so I always get to preboard.
This is blind privilege and I am proud of it LOL.

Great video , definitely i prefer aisle seat , i think Southwest Airlines have the best method for boarding may be no more coordinated but more efficient Yes . Thanks for Sharing
Recently flew bringing a 18" duffle and a small backpack. I didnt want to bring the rolling suitcase because it was 2" above carry on size limit. I was blown away by the SIZES of carry on bags people were bringing on. I'd say half were over regulation. It made boarding take forever, and then there was not enough room for everyone to use the bins. And why are people putting BOTH their bags up top?
If the airlines would enforce their own size limits on carry on bags, that would help..... A bunch...... Let alone the 2 bag limit.....
I prefer...
BUSINESS CLASS as it’s usually a window and aisle seat at the same time 😂
Juniper’s A. Is this AviaLuckie on ROBLOX?
I actually like the chaos boarding method Southwest uses. When I had traveled with this airline, the choice of seating was almost like motivation to get on the plane and put your bags away as soon as possible. After all, no one wants to be stuck next to a toddler on their first plane trip!
ProTip:Just be quick. Not pay.Meaning try to be super early to get to the gate. This way you can sit at the fronter rows and be able to get on first.Since you would be near the desk. And simple.Happy travels! 😏😏😏
I think teleportation will be a great method for boarding 😁
if we are going to use teleportation, why not all the way to the destination?
Brian Davies yes
@@briandavies1910 just commented with respect to this video...
Otherwise how to use is your personal choice
If airlines were REALLY interested in boarding quickly then they wouldn’t charge for checked bags!!!
I love middle seats and window seats because in the middle It is so cuddly and It feel warm😊
JetBlue used to board using the front door and back doors of the aircraft. It was amazing and fun to exit at the back of the plane!

When I flew CityJet out of London City airport, they had certain rows (e.g., 1-10) enter from the front and the other rows enter from the back. Took much less time.

Best method? tell passengers they are being timed. If they board the plane in 10 minutes or less, everyone on board gets a $20 off coupon to use on a future trip. Majority of coupons will go unclaimed (airline still wins). You’ll be amazed how quickly passengers will help one another.

I only fly once a year or so. I probably mess up the boarding process. I like to place my stuff in a bin 2 rows in front and over the opposite side - this way I can keep an eye on my stuff and make sure no one screws around with it!!
Ilike the outside in approach. The wondow seat passengers get first priority (I always use a window seat)!
Just do like EasyJet (one bag with a maximum size)
I have never boarded an airplane that used the back to front method in over 10 years! Now they do front to back
Geeky Nerd73 I was thinking the same thing
Ryan air and others do both doors
That is why I LOVE Southwest!!
My country's planes have a method, it's simple.
They're spread into 2 groups middle rowers to the back go from the back door, front to middle rowers near the wing go through the front door. It's way more convinient and only take about 15 minutes. Also their only allowed to have 50kg of luggage in the carry-on. Hope this is helpful for Americans.
Steffen method is the best, just make exception for people with small children (they also do in the conventional method anyway)
I love flying Southwest Airlines and I prefer a window seats.
Me too
Nice
In CPH they often use two staircases, jet bridge to the front and “old style” on the back. It cuts off a lot of time and unless it’s purring down with rain I don’t mind going in and out of the rear door.
I think airports should find a way to make two jet bridges that fits most common types of aircrafts
I always fly Southwest and since the flights are almost always full, I take the first middle seat I find. Plus I only carry on a small bag that fits under the seat so getting seated is quick.
Ryan Air uses both the front and back entrance to load the plane. So much quicker
Yeah but it’s Ryan Air, I’d rather walk...
I remember once I was on a flight for 23 hours nightmare omg 😭
In my country, you’re only allowed 1 carry on bag (small purse not counted). So if you got 2 you will be required to check-in the other one. Your carry on bag must be of a certain size as well, so no large suitcases. We get 7kg free carry on.
The Animation & Cartoon is Excellent....
Boarding for me takes 0 minutes😂 bc I always get early😂

I prefer the isle seat because I can go to the bathroom without walking through people
Sister vs brother British Isles or...?
An other method I found is some companies will bord from both the front and rear. They draw an imaginary line halfway between the doors, rows behind bord middle to back and in front middle to front (if there is first class further forward than door they will bord during the assisted
I once went on an Air Asia flight where the people boarding went in the front door while those exiting left via the back. No seat pockets, people organised by seat number. The plane was only at the gate for 20 mins from arrival to departure, including refueling. It can be done.

You forgot one of the most efficient way used mainly by low cost carriers in Europe (Easyjet, Ryanair, Vueling...): boarding by the front AND rear doors. Takes on average 12 minutes to board a 180 pax A320 or 737!
The southwest way works out very well. I tried it out for my first time and it was very easy
I don't understand why so many people want to be the first one on the plane. Is it more fun to sit and wait on an airplane than it is to sit and wait at the gate? Nobody gets to leave until everyone's on board, so people need to just chill.
I love Southwest Airlines, I always go southwest
CGP Grey wants his video back.
Honestly people like you are making me hate CGP grey and he was my favorite youtuber.
Jonathan DPG why? The channel you should hate is Bright Side for copying genuine YTers vids
Icelandair has very strict limits on carry-on size (the smallest of all carriers) and a First Class first, everybody else next. Seems to work very well, for me at least.

Hey there were less travellers in70s than they are in 2019 maybe cause of inexpensive tickets
does anyone here because they watched cgp greys video and yt recommended this?
I understand that many RUclipsrs copy the ideas of each other because it's easy and it's also a way for them to give their touch to it and their spin this is an educational Channel and they go in more depth about the history and numbers then cgp Grey while I do think they should give him some recognition for the idea they are within the right to make this video.
In certain Caribbean countries, eg. the one where I work, we don’t have jet bridge.. so we use air stairs, both front and back.. we board a 757 with 200 passengers in 14 minutes.
What kind of editing you used? Android or Pc?
Ariff Ariff what is that supposed to mean
Lol I don't call what they serve in the plane food. (except probably ANA)
Hi, I have came up with a different, I hope you like it!
Once I heard that people board on the back of the plane I thought that if you split group by group from one side to the other and ask if they are the number (like, you were in 17-3P the number is 17), and we will use the way that is the smartest now, but the group together, and they will do it on each and send the people on the same row at the same time,
I love the window seat it is the best especially when no one is sitting beside me, it has only happened two times where I was in first class and no one was sitting next to me, the only reason I was in first class was because my dad was sick and my mother paid for my tickets
This video is copied from CGP Grey’s video.
I was thinking this channel isn't for the people.people are trick because of the animation cartoon voice
Id rather have familys/friends board first because they take more time
Then first and business class next
BUT, that would cause everybody in the line say that they're friends. I will just let families in because it's obvious that it is a family.
I check my carry on for free every single time. AA, without fail, asks for people to check their bags for free 'to final destination' and that's what I do. I've only regretted it once when I got stranded for 24 hours in Chicago due to weather and hadn't pulled a change of clothes out into my backpack.
I love Southwest's method. I always get an aisle seat.

Introduce folding seats for Aisles. Also reserved stuffing-blocks for Aisle seaters. Let them get into the plane at the end after all others ( windows and middle seaters) captured their seats. Till then the aisle seats both the sides remain in folding position giving enough extra space to keep the chaotic clusters from forming and thus no delays. Let the aislers come in last and settle fast as they do not collide with others and have their own luggage place. Yes seat engineering has to be done but at the end it will save 35% of net time. Some savings out of $1000 per minute on tarmac will take care of the cost involved.
I love windows seats
