OPENING A STUDIO: Home Studio vs Buying Commercial Property

- When you're on the fence about expanding your business it can be daunting, to say the least. In this video, I talk about how to decide if buying commercial property and investing in an actual building makes sense. Or if renting is right for you, OR if staying at home and working is what makes the most sense.
Renting commercial space can be stressful not knowing how long you can really be there. On the flip side, some renters have amazing relationships with their landlords, and that works for them! Buying has its downsides of extra taxes and menial tasks that take away from the creation process all on its own. Staying at home offers the most freedom financially, however, if you want to separate your family from the business it can get a little messy.

It’s rather inspiring to watch your videos, Jeremy. My impression is that you’re one of the few who talk about recording and actually make a living from it 😂 . I share the same feeling. I love doing all the extra stuff on top of being a musician. It makes my work more complete and meaningful. Hoping to work with recording as a side hustle soon, when the kids start school 🤷♂️
I glad you like them man. That honestly means a lot. RUclips is fun. But freaking hard. I love it so comments like this make me excited to make more. My oldest just started all day school.... :( they grow up too fast.....
@@RecordingStudioLoser be safe out there! COVID is getting kids now 😐
one thing that's hard to find in a home studio is tall ceilings. I WANT TALLER CEILINGS!
haha YES
i just opened some sort of hybrid, commercial and home studio space. And i think like you said the most important part was creating a space that every1 is drawn to both creatively and functionally.
10 seconds in... love that you're rebuilding a rhodes...... can't wait for rest of vid ;)
Keep at it Jeremy. I have a buddy that restored a Hammond B3. He tore the whole thing apart and put it all back together once he had all the replacement of worn parts on hand. Turned out really nice!
Oh that sounds like a blast.
Thanks for the video Jeremy, very insightful! As much as I love the idea and mindset behind a professional home studio, I think I will one day want a studio separated from my family and living space. I certainly look forward to applying similar concepts and practices to using a highly effective home studio!
Cheers!
thats where my head was at. however if things were different I could still make a home work. It would just look a bit different
5:40 respect man x
Property tax. My tax almost 50% of my mortgage. Crazy shit
Dude.. you think you have it bad. In Portland Oregon we also have to pay “personal property tax”
So each year we pay tax on EVERYTHING a business owns. Computers, desks, water dispenser, you name it. We don’t have a sales tax in Oregon, but the personal property tax in Portland is freaking crazy.
We have the same thing here.
How did you find the property? And how it went purchasing the property and building and getting the equipment in
For the first few years I would recommend renting but after a couple years maybe buy.
It's always funny when Americans complain about taxes! Great video though, keep it up! ;)
I’ve been operating out of my home studio for a while now, and since starting this RUclips channel doing full band live in studio performances, it’s become clear that I need a bigger space. I’m unfortunately not in a position to buy, but renting seems impossible. I’ve found a bunch of spaces that I could afford, but it seems like as soon as I mention music, it completely shuts down the conversation. Landlords just seem really allergic to having any type of music in there properties. I’m wondering if you (or anyone else out there) have advice on finding a space?
Unfortunately I don't have any help there... However I know there are other owners out there who do rent and have good relationships I'd be interested in them chiming in here.
I have ssl six, fusion, Apollo 8 , satellite & twin, Can I start a quality services with my gear?
Not that gear should be the only consideration. But yes. All things equal you should be able to do high quality work with that.
@@RecordingStudioLoser great I think I did everything including credit, I even started a side business repairing home sprinkler systems and general handy man services to pay for the gear and like a 6month class in a studio on recording mixing and mastering, I just need to make the first move to generate clients for the studio now.
Rhodesmantic
😂
Did you REALLY just make a "too much tine on my hands" joke?
Oh yeah... i went there
Someone might say you're rhodes-mantic... ;-)
😂😂
@@RecordingStudioLoser BTW, thanks for the very thorough and inspiring reflection about owning a studio vs. renting one. Lifetime project against one shot in and out. And it also translates to so many other businesses / projects. (and 2nd btw, your RND master buss processor video was one important I bought mine.) Thanks again.
Watched a few videos of yours and you seem very jaded or sad with owning a recording video and I’m trying to figure out if these are deterrents or if these are warning videos as much as they are “owning vs renting” videos No offense. I am looking at owning a recording studio, So just doing some research and I think with ANY business there are gonna be upsides and a lot of downsides and thank you for making the videos and letting people know about the overhead and that things come up but I think people know that none of this is easy and and that things come u. But like you said you love it, and I think people looking for these types of videos love it so I’m just wondering if you are giving knowledge or your experience. I don’t think you’re trying to scare people lol also thank for the information.
