Missed my opportunity to see this print up at southport dendy qld as i had worked 11hrs the day of screening and had started 3.5 hours earlier than usual on 4hrs sleep. Still kicking myself. One of my all time favourite movies.
Congratulations on building your own home cinema with a vic 5, truly keeping the art of film alive. I recently binged all your home cinema videos, they’re great and it was wonderful seeing your vic 5 in use. Cheers
Both parts were spliced together, there was no intermission, just the “intermission” card. The screening was very late and so the candy bar was shut so the audience couldn’t do anything other than go the bathroom.
I’m curious: how much of the original 2.76:1 image was preserved for this 35mm anamorphic print? I saw a 35mm print 20 years ago but it seemed to be 2.35:1 but I’ve read there are letterboxed 2.50:1 35mm prints in the past, thus preserving most of the original image.
I'm unsure of how much of the image was preserved for this print, but an estimate would be about a third of the image. hoping to see it in 70mm ultra panavision soon!
wish I got to see it in newtown instead of Dendy Canberra. They made a dogs breakfast of it. completely restarted the movie thinking the musical introduction was a glitch, audio levels kept changing, lights going on at wrong times, not enough to ruin how good benhur is but still was immensely disappointing, especially from Dendy
I'm sorry that happened at your screening. I understand why people may think the overture would be a glitch. perhaps the screening was ran by someone who had never seen Ben-Hur before, would make sense. Thanks for watching and commenting! cheers
No offense, but why would you really want to see a scope reduction print of a glorious 70mm Ultra Panavision movie? If they can show a piece of trash like Hateful Eight in Camera 65 70mm then why can't you show Ben Hur that way. Ben Hur was the first movie I ever saw in 70mm. It was a great experience. It should be always be shown that way if you are going to waste the time to show it on film.
I agree with your point that Ben-Hur should be seen in 70mm ultra panavision, I'm saving my first viewing for it (I've never seen it before, I just filmed this video). I do think it is a bit of a waste to crop a majority of the image. This cinema was only capable of 35mm. regardless, I think it's good they're showing anything on film, even if it is a reduction. I thought hateful eight was good...
When I ran a distribution company we had made a new 70mm Ben-Hur print and unfortunately that was also cropped down from the original 2.76:1 ratio. Some of the opening titles just made it edge-to-edge without being cropped. It was however a 6 track magnetic sound print, which in my opinion is hard to beat for sound warmth, depth and overall dynamic realism. This 35mm print was also in our library. As we know 70mm screening options are very limited. If it wasn't for Hateful Eight release that triggered a few locations to install the 70mm equipment, there would only be even less, a handful, of 70mm able theatres in Australia. Prints are extremely expensive especially when they were being made in the now obsolete magnetic sound. From memory it was well over $20,000 back in the late 1990s for the one Ben-Hur print. @@ClarkTeddles
This is awesome! Glad to see 35mm are still in use ❤
Thanks! I'm also very glad 35mm prints are still in use in today's theatres, it makes the cinema-going experience much more enjoyable and special.

It certainly was a nice-looking 35mm print, Dakin. Not sure if it would be the best film to watch after 4 hours of sleep though.
Cheers,

Thank you for this. I don't get to see a Vic5 in operation very much (not counting my own). Glad to see a theater with one.

Inesquecível: assistir este filme no CINEMA mais POPULAR do BRASIL em NANUQUE MG. CINE BRALANDA. Muito obrigado!!!
How did you handle the intermission?
