I’ve definitely learnt my lesson on peel ply, but you make it look so easy, that I really kick myself for not having applied that lesson more often! “On my next boat, …”

Its great stuff, anything to reduce the need for sanding epoxy!

Hi Dan. This is just the perfect video series for me as I am preparing myself to repair a little sports utility that was originally built using the foam sandwich method. This has disintegrated leaving a very thin layered hull like the Healey. It also has a large and heavy fibreglass moulding for the deck and the seats which I am going to junk in favour of ply based formers and deck. I am watching your videos with even more interest than usual. All the best for another incredible build/re-build series.

At 9:03 Surprised to see that you keep the gelcoat/paint and do not grind down to laminate before applying a new layer ... guess bonding will suffer between the old hull and new inside layer ...

    Hi Dan)
maybe I'm wrong, but at 11:53- 11:55 there is a problem with non-adhesive surfaces. when removing the sacrificial layer, it seemed that the composite layer was rising from the surface

None of the composite came away, it was all very well bonded. Are you looking at the shiny marks in the bottom right corner of the shot? These are areas where the peel ply isn't in full contact with the surface of the layup, and has bubbles or crinkles in it, you can see this up fwd in the boat at 10:23. If you are more meticulous with placing the peel ply to avoid any of these then you will end up with a more uniform, unmarked surface, vacuum bagging is also a great way to eliminate this. In this instance I wasn't too worried about the odd area as we will lightly sand these parts before we paint the inside.

Hi Dan, that was very instructive. My small boat has a slightly depressed hull (GRP) in one spot. Could you discuss using carbon fibre vs. fiberglass in such an application?

I'm not much of an expert when it comes to composites but I'll have a go... Carbon fibre is certainly more rigid than fibreglass which generally allows you to go thinner with layups and therefore save weight within a component. For repairing an existing fibreglass hull I wouldn't really think the extra cost of carbon would be worth the money as the weight saving would be barely noticeable. I hope that helps.
