McLaughlin, Stern, Gambale, and Holdsworth have incredible heart and technique..but then comes Ford with his emotion, mastery of the blues, dynamics, rhythm, silence, building solos, lyricism... and that's it!
Robben Ford is one of those rare players who has it all, he even had it at a very young age: Time, tone, phrasing, melody, authority in every statement....
Robben was actually a teacher at MI in 1985, I was a drum student then and would see him often in the hallways or faculty office. He was one of my favorite guitarists so I felt privileged.
I was wondering about that, just watched another GIT video from the mid 80s where Frank was nearly bald. The shaved head look wasn’t very hip back then I guess, and not an option. So he normally wore a wig back then (?) Luckily for him and Satch the shaved head thing caught on, I think bc Bruce Willis started doing movies with that look in the 1990s. Franks a monster player either way
I was lucky enough to see Electrik Band in 1984. What a lineup. Gambale was just killing it. He's truly been a ground-breaking musician for decades. Thanks, Frank (and Robben, of course).
Maybe some other year? There was no Elektric Band in 1984. They started as a trio in 1985, then they had several guitarists, Henderson etc, and Frank joined later. His first appearance was on Light Years.
haha, ahhh the shorts... it's a very Australian thing mate, shorts and t-shirt are normal dress standard, if he was wearing thongs/jandals/sandals on his feet, whatever you call them then that ensemble is true Aussie casual wear🤣 ain't lying either mate... Cheers
You can play like this only when you internalize the music and the guitar becomes your voice - i.e. you're a natural - not to mention the tremendous amount of hard work!
Love the Broom and RF. Saw FG live with Jeff Berlin the first month he came over from down under. Playing that pink strat and a boogie combo and sweeping was just alien magic back then. Saw Robben with Vinnie “Talk” tour. Dumble!!!
How does Robben get that lovely woody tone no matter what guitar he plays? I realise it is "in the fingers", but it is also about his setup, so I am curious to find out how he does it. I am guessing he is not using his Dumble here, but i could be wrong?
Frank's playing, although still very good, is at a fairly immature level here compared to his future grandmaster sweeping self. This is good news for us mortals as it proves how much his playing is a product of great talent, but also insane amounts of hard graft
frank is in the Allan Holdsworth tradition spectacular but no room to breathe, Robben mixes it up a bit better but i am a little biased towards robben anyway, love both these guys
seems like frank was still adjusting his technique or the guitar was out or something. Robben was absolutely cooking in this and im usually bias to gambale. Its more of a blues progression thats probably why.
I thought i saw a leg laying on the ground the 1st 15 mins. I was like whatever, it cant be a leg, i must be stupid lol. But it was in fact a leg, its just that that big white sock and reebok were the only thing you can see in the crowd. I dont feel so dumb now 😂 i knew i seen a leg and only a leg 🤣
@@brachashighhopeshomestead226 Robben was as Unique then as he is now, just a gifted cat same as Frank Gambale.... I spent more time with Frank than anyone at the school and learned so much from him that I still use today he's was brilliant then as well.
Even a VHS tape that appears to have been through a washing machine several times can't diminish the quality of great musicians.
Sure, but it sounds like Robben is playing a banjo.
Here... because there are levels... ruclips.net/video/lYg_vUr7pyQ/видео.html
The only diminished thing here is the scale!

I prefer Albert king or Otis Rush.
@@martynapalm4950 You do know music is not a sport, do you?
@@stephanleohe doesn't, and there are only 2 artists in his music world.
Early Robben is unbeatable.
Frank gets 1000 credits for being the audiophile, not caring about what things look like.
The best fingers and legs of GIT ;-)

Yep, I was a guitar student then too. Frank was my weekly instructor! Fantastic to just hang around those guys and try to soak up something!
The hairpiece is back on.

Even back in 1984 gambale was a complete beast!!
1984? how do you know?
yup - just effin' outstanding.
Even back in 1974 the pond at that time wasn't big enough for this fish.
Yes and that’s when Gambale was wearing mini-skirts.
gay shorts and all

Robben Ford's rhythm playing is always on point!
Better than his lead playing IMO 🙂
Ed Roscetti on drums, Paul Farnen on bass : great players, great teachers !
Two of my favorite guitarists playing together!
Wow! Gambale was fantastic even since then!!!
What about Keith Wyatt at the end ? All Great guitarists
Omg my two favorite guitar players together, and gary moore
Thankyou so much for this.
Man great find.. Beasts at the prime
Two of my favorite guitarists. Robben sounds great in this!
Tremendous production jewel
Frank Gambale - Master of Fusion Guitar And Daisy Dukes
Da Main Mang lmao. Those shorts had me ☠️.

Yes, I saw FG with GH and PW in Dallas, but to me PXYZ beats them all.
My old school:-)! 🙂
Beautiful guitar playing of these fine cats... Not forgetting rhythm section here. Splendid!
Magical.. Thanks for posting.
Only Frank could pull that short shorts like he means it!
Awesome footage
Gracias Christophe por regalarme, regalarnos esta joyita con estos 3 maestros tocando juntos..
Was there, if my memory doesn’t fail me, Robben was trying his Dumble amp for the first time…
This is just so precious, two of my great heroes. Thanx for the upload
robin looks so young nice 2 C him in a different setting, frank playing a strat, wow!.
FG Stands OUT those vicious chops & tight shorts WTF ?!! lol
Awesome performance!!!
Franck " Rocky Balboa" Gambale !
Robben Ford could get great tone out of a rubber band stretched across a broomstick
Love Franks sense of style, if I were a guitar celebrity I to would show up with short shorts, and preferably a pink loony tunes t shirt.
Chorus galore 😄
Thank you for this video man!
A very "Larry Coryell" like solo on Footprints by Gambale. Gods at work here!!!
Caramba, 2 monstros da guitarra mais estes dois anormais ai, no baixo e na batera, Dream Team.
Frank Gambale amazing solo
Impressive Keith
Franks strat used for "Brave new Guitar" Album also released 1985, nice tone on that album

I can hear introduction...Ladies and gentleman lets greet Frank Gambale who has just finished his gym session ;-)
Amazing performance! is frank wearing a skirt?
I think that’s the same strat from his Brave New Guitar album cover
Gambale didn’t even bother to wear pants haha!
Back when Robben owned a comb
And a button up shirt! :)
1985 it is !
Too bad the video quality is so poor -but understandable because of the VHS resolution back in the day.
monster frank...
Do not know the Chuck Norris looking dude on bass but is that Tony Rossetti (sp? ) on drums ? A sweet guy never heard him play when I went to PIT
Paul Farren

"Frank's playing, although still very good, is at a fairly immature level here...". No, not really... 😂
@@min7sharp5 Yeah ok, the benchmark is Frank himself.
He just cancelled his concert in Berlin for which I already got tickets... 😭
I think he was holding back to not embarrass Robben
Frank played ever so slightly “harder not smarter” back then. You can hear and see a lot more picking on the arpeggios.

No he was like straight out of Miles Davies's Band...so the whole style was down to a T
Gambale in Shorts !?!?!

Great playing anyway!
I THINK THEY WERE TRYING TO PLAY WIPEOUT BUT THEY JUST COULDN’T FIND THE KEY.
Yes it's quite awkward isn't it
Yeah, FG is my all-time favorite but he had nothing in this clip...Robben was speaking...still better than I'll ever be.
Wayne Gerard Milton I see Frank as passion, intellect and technique moreso than feel and improvisational story making
Sitting in the Audience
Johnny J R, in those days did robben stand out as unique if u went to the Git often?

Oh wow what a cool video. Frank schools robben here
Like Gambale once said he's glad he invented the sweeping! As you can see here he was just a decent player!
Yo me pregunto ¿Éste tipo nació siendo una bestia?? ...ya no los hacen así, Dios perdió el molde. 🤷🏻♂️

Obviously pre-Michael Jordan's cultural impact on length of men's shorts!
