  • Juniper raft style bonsai cleanup and refinement! Raft style bonsai is one of Eric's favorite styles. In this video he walks through design decisions including the creation of jin and the removal of one trunk and re-positioning of two others. Please like and comment on this video, and subscribe to our channel!
In raft style, the straight trunk of the bonsai tracks along the ground, illustrating a tree in nature that as been blown over by the wind, taken root, and had its branches on the upward side continue to grow as new trunks.

We'll be sharing some younger pieces that we have in the works that could be made into similar compositions in upcoming videos. Thanks!

Fantastic tree now. I watched your earlier videos on this.
Have you done a similar mame or shohin project?

    • @Bonsaify

No, although I've done smaller than this. The problem is that with the individual trunks of this being pretty small, and branches even smaller, it's hard to replicate it at small size.

@@Bonsaify Good points. I'm considering trying a hawthorn as trunk chopped 3 thinking they were dead (we've had a hard winter followed by a heatwave in the UK). So short trunks and fresh growth lend to small projects.

What Kind of Juniper is this? I started taking cuttings from my Blue Chip Juniper in my landscaping. It's funny, I don't like the shrub at all in my yard, but when I lifted the branches to prune it back I found many rooted areas. I now have about 50 cuttings with roots, one is 1" thick and about 3' tall. Instant pre-bonsai. Also, Do you recommend paper birch for Bonsai? I have been eyeing one 2" thick in my yard... Thanks!

It's a Kishu (Juniperus chinensis variety) that I grew from a cutting. Some birch are good for bonsai, others are difficult to work with. Branch dieback can be a problem, particularly on water birch. European white birch are doable.

from what type of wood is the frame made of? doesn't it get damaged from the water?

They are redwood fence boards, cut to the right size. The box is only for growing and temporary, once it reaches a bit more refined stage it'll likely go on a stone slab, or into a ceramic pot.
