What is Black Mirror about? Generally, it explores the human condition, and the various ways technology can bring out the worst in us. In this case, we didn't simply see how technology could bring out the worst in humanity if we let it reach that point some time in the future, we saw the human condition as it is for some people (in the entertainment industry) NOW, and how they could come to exploit various technologies (some of which are available, or not far off, now).
This episode is arguably the one that is most likely possible to come true for some, because it is already true for some. It's a metaphor for Miley's life, but not just hers. The reaction so many people are having actually goes to strengthen the episode... people are whining about it, while ignoring how real entertainers, especially young ones, are already subjected to immoral and unethical (possibly at times illegal) treatment by people that have no other desire but to drain them and get every benefit they can out of the entertainers talent.

I don't know shit about Miley Cyrus, nor all that drama shit with Disney and all, so if that was their idea, no wonder this episode was very underwhelming. By far the worst Black Mirror episode.... It's not even close to any other episode. I don't think Miley Cyrus or her character are any problem, but the writing and execution of the episode is really really bad and lazy, and it's the only episode where the bad and pathetic American characteristics have been so apparent. Here we have had one of the best made series, and then we suddenly get a episode that is something I would expect from a horrible Hollywood cliche movie

Something pretty terrifying to note is Miley Cyrus herself was hospitalised in 2014 for an “allergic reaction” the same time she was going through major depression. She even liked a fan post on instagram comparing the two.

She cancelled a bunch of her concerts after the death of her dog because she was breaking down on stage a lot. She was hospitalised for a couple weeks in April 2014. She completely gave up on the Bangerz era after that hospitalisation. no singles, no music videos, no press etc she just finished the tour and that was that. It was during that time that she wrote most of her songs for her Miley Cyrus & Her Dead Petz album, which if you listen to the lyrics it’s clear she felt alone, in a dark place and was using drugs a lot to cope.

OK but does anyone realize that this episode specifically calls out DISNEY and their exploitation of young performers?? In the end it all came together: when Ashley and the girls ride in to expose Asley's aunt (=Disney) with the MOUSE car that has MOUSE CONTROL written on it and then stepping out of the car, Asley throws her the middle finger (which was by the way one of Cyrus's signature moves after she broke away from Disney). And then they really hammered it home once again when Cyrus is performing 'Head like a hole' about her "shitty aunt" and when she sings "head like a hole; black as your soul; I'd rather die than give you control" they cut to the girls' father talking about a mouse and waving his mouse control device. Very gutsy episode, I even remember creator Charlie Brooker saying that Cyrus gave personal details about her life and that the episode is going to piss people off. Well done! Why is nobody talking about this?

This whole episode is one big analogy to Miley Cyrus’ life:
    - Wears a wig like Hannah Montana.
    - Wants to do mature music and be taken seriously like Miley.
    - Ashley Eternal = Hannah Montana Forever (the name of the last season of the show)
    - Rachel is the typical target audience of Hannah Montana (15 year old girl)
    - Miley was hospitalized because of an allergic reaction in 2014, like Ashley O.
    - The aunt and her three baboons: Disney.
    - Ashley Too in the beginning is Miley Cyrus with a Disney channel filter. When the filter is off she rebels like Miley did back in the day.
Amazing episode, wish it would have been a movie and I’m glad Miley got her symbolic redemption through this!!

And then they really hammered it home once again when Cyrus is performing 'Head like a hole' about her "shitty aunt" and when she sings "head like a hole; black as your soul; I'd rather die than give you control" they cut to the girls' father talking about a mouse and waving his mouse control device. This was so really good. I found myself laughing and getting happy when they saved Ashley. Aside from the robot and technology I was shocked that that storyline about Ashley was also a truth based storyline about how artists are controlled with drugs, killed and how the conscious mind can be stolen and used to experiment on.
I didn't get how Ashley 0 could be alive from her coma and the robot was still with an active mind too.
My niece's little LuvaBella gave me the creeps last Christmas.

This is the one episode that went over the cliff for me. It had such a great workup...a great emotional story, heartfelt and heartbreaking....and then it suddenly went off the cliff and turned into comedy. It famously “jumped the shark” and became entirely satirical and goofy. I did not like this episode...I did like it up until the two sisters joined forces. Then it just got weird.

    • @thelegacyofgaming2928

    • @sign543
      @sign543 5 лет назад

Mary Mukamb - That it might have some real-life elements doesn’t really have any bearing on whether I feel it’s well done or not. Some biopics just suck, not because the story is bad, but because of how it’s presented. This short film began as a heartfelt moratorium of the effects of fame and stardom while ignoring serious mental health issues...but then suddenly turns into a comedy about 2/3 into the film. I lost interest once things began getting seriously goofy. But...that’s just my opinion.

Many people say that the episode needed to be darker, or have a great reveal, but it was supposed to be that flat.
Rachel, at the end, was running away, because she doesn't like the new Ashley.
She watched her through her TV or the phone or Ashley Too. She can't get that image that Asley O is trapped in out of her head. That is why, for example, when depressed, flatlined, fresh-out-of-a-coma-Ashley woke up, she said "OMG I'm such a big fan!". That could have been a dark Moment, Ashley Too trying to basically kill her human self. There were darker moments, like the pills or the traps.
But Rachel doesn't see what doesn't fit her view on things and ignores it. Just like us, when Miley changed her image after Hannah Montana we were all like "Nah...".
And that's what it's supposed to be. A cliche disney movie, because Rachel only learns from the Media- and they only want to have 4% of you.

I really loved the "it's only using 4% of my brain" part...really reminds society that we don't truly know all these celebrities or people we love. Only a part of them that they've chosen to show. Heck it doesn't even have to be real. Some celebrities of course are true and down to earth. Others I'm sure have been fake at times. It's just a good friendly reminder to never pretend you know someone better than they know themselves. You never get the full picture even with your closest friends or family...you'll never know 100% everything about a person...not every thought they've had, not every change they went through, not all their likes and dislikes etc. You just gotta accept that. It's not a bad thing. However, it doesn't mean you can't get to know a person well or still love parts about famous people😊
