its another one like san junipero. Not all black mirror episodes have a dark or sad ending. The important thing is the story it tells on the way to the ending, a lesson about technology and holding a mirror up to society as it is today.

I believe people don’t understand this episode because A LOT of people aren’t aware of the true darkness of the Music Industry. It’s a very sad place where a lot of young singers are used and abused. This episode is very dark, if you’re capable of understanding it and how it’s a very True representation of the modern music industry
It's a campy and surface level representation. People keep acting like it's sooo deep. "if you're capable of understanding" it's literally spoon fed to you so idk who wouldn't get the message.

This episode is for everyone of the fans who didn't like it. Just like old Ashley's fans who run out at the end of the episode. Everyone has the right to their own opinions, but the show is calling you out on it and not a lot of people notice it. The Sweet Irony.
WHOA I love that irony. A lot of people hate the episode because it's too positive and it doesn't fit what "Black Mirror is supposed to be", just like those girls who don't like Ashley at the end because she's too "negative." Brilliant!

@The Yawner This is exactly what I felt after I watched the episode. The makers of the episode deliberately made it that way. And it's funny how so many people missed the actual point and hated the episode.
It was poorly written, was so predictable and unrealistic. It was like watching a bad 90's sitcom. I don't mind a happy ending but make the story interesting or funny at least. Not cliche and lame.

This whole episode is one big analogy to Miley Cyrus’ life: - Wears a wig like Hannah Montana. - Wants to do mature music and be taken seriously like Miley. - Ashley Eternal = Hannah Montana Forever (the name of the last season of the show) - Rachel is the typical target audience of Hannah Montana (15 year old girl) - Miley was hospitalized because of an allergic reaction in 2014, like Ashley O. - The aunt and her three baboons: Disney. - Ashley Too in the beginning is Miley Cyrus with a Disney channel filter. When the filter is off she rebels like Miley did back in the day. Amazing episode, wish it would have been a movie and I’m glad Miley got her symbolic redemption through this!!
Chris Smitty Yes, but she’d read her diary and saw that she’d been searching how to break contracts. So she already knew it before Ashley said it out loud.
for all the people who are saying that this episode was bad, and underwhelming... not all black mirror episodes have to have a bad ending, i think i the writers really had fun with this one, with the protagonists coming on top and discovering themselves. it would be boring if all black mirror episodes end in despair, and only watching to satisfy some sort of fix of depression. cheer up :/
Nobody cares that it doesn't have a bad ending. People are complaining that it became a goofy disney episode by the end, which is completely out of character for a show of this caliber. Or the caliber it used to be, I should say.

I mean.. it was alright.. had potential to be alot more. The girl waking up a coma ridden flat lining depressed popstar with "I'm such a huge fan" is not the one though
But that was the point. Rachel hasn’t grown as a character. Even when seeing that Ashley was in that situation, Rachel still wanted to pull that compliment to her, because her only friend was Ashley too In the end, even though Ashley is now singing other music style and is totally different, Rachel is still going after her because she is lonely. She is just sitting there watching and trying to accept
I just felt like she was too old to be that childish and say "omg I'm such a huge fan' when she awoke from the coma... It would have made more sense if the girl was like 10 or 11. Not 15 or 16.
As much as everyone seemed to dislike this episode, I fuckin loved it! I think being a younger female definitely helps, and growing up with Hannah Montana, I think this was such a good commentary on popstars/child stars.
@Comicbookstoreguy177 I guess you could say that, but then again I watched 4 seasons of it and was still shocked every time there was a huge plot twist 😅
This season was good and all, but it was kind of a disappointment for me. I'm used to the dystopian Futures and the other worldliness of other Black Mirror episodes. This just didn't have it for me. And only three episodes, what the actual fuck!? I really hope they come out with a longer season to make up for this travesty.
The first half of the episode was actually good! But then when Ashley Too become conscious it became so cringey, it seemed like I was watching a really predictable cartoon
A thing you missed, is that just after the "6 months later", there is a commercial playing on the tv, in the girls room. And it's the exact same commercial for the graine, that plays in the taxi when Liam is on his way to the airport in Entire history of you. "Because memory is for living"
Really like that black mirror is exploring other paths than the usual “technology will doom us all!” ... lighter tones with some dark patches didn’t hurt at all. + Cyrus acting and song on this one is AMAZING.
I feel like we are used to Black Mirror episodes having a sad dark ending😂. That's why we don't like this one as much. This episode was entertaining and had a satisfying ending. It just didn't have an amazing twist like the their older episodes.
Nah, I personally don't care if the ending is good or bad, this episode was just bad all around. Way too goofy for me to take it seriously, it felt like a disney show that I used to watch as a kid minus the obscene amounts of swearing.
@@thelegacyofgaming2928 yeah it totally felt like a silly teen girl movie lol. Its not the best angle to go towards with the audience they have. It felt too different from their previous episodes. I still enjoyed it tho, just not as much .
Even Rolo Haynes from Black Museum points that out (with the jalapeño metaphor): "first time you ate one, bet you spat it out: too hot, but you persevered... And it became addictive!" and if we don't get that depression from a dark twist of an episode, then the fans would get hella pissed. At least, that's how i see it. You do you.
Ikr. And I'm surprised they decided to make this episode as the last one of the season. I feel like black mirror usually put the most hard core ep in the end to give more of that 'bang' effect.

Lillu It’s also reminded us on Britney Spears. Especially in Spears’ ‘Lucky’ song lyrics it’s self explanatory. Britney Spears also started out with Disney in Mickey Mouse Club back in 90s.
You forgot another Easter Egg. The song that the “computer Ashley” first sings on the news report (when they introduce the fact that she’s still writing in her dreams) is “Anyone who knows what love is” which is the song that was in A Million Merits
unpopular opinion. i loved this episode. it started off slow, but when the ashley doll came to life i loved every minute. the doll fucking hilarious. lthat was brilliant voice acting and comic relief. and then the nod to NIN really made it for me.
In the part where ashley too sees the news report... they extract ashley o is singing the song "Anyone who knows what love is (will understand) - recuring song in the series missed easter egg
Right before the report came on where Ashley too woke up they were talking (in the news) about a device that can save your memories, which is a reference to two black mirror epispdes
San Junipero had a good ending.. So was Striking Vipers. They were just....different....but not bad. Also the ending wasnt good for everyone. The dad apparently still couldn't even sell a mousetrap and now lost his daughters and his truck. Maybe he will break out and make his own music as his life is sounding like a country song.
Even at the end, when he is STILL trying to sell that damn mousetrap...even though one of his daughters are now famous. I guess its safe to say he is not gonna share in his kid's fame. I hope they aren't too hard on him though. He still was supporting his kids even if he was distant.
I read an article that had him saying he thought it was a great idea and he played one of the tracks for his wife and she was like "WTF???" HAHAHA. He's definately changed ALOT over the years. I'd love to hear him covering the Ashley Oh Version. ROFL

@@lillamatuszka1693 Hey thanks so much for this comment, far more informative than the video! I'm the wrong demographic to know anything about Miley Cyrus' career (Same age as Charlie Brooker, but less attentive to pop culture) but I do know about Reznor, so I figured it was a dig at the music industry in general, but without the specific "F.U. All is right with the world after reading your comment, though. Cheers. :)
It’s actually kind of refreshing to see a Black Mirror episode with a happier ending rather than every single episode being tragic and depressing. I hope every season will have at least 1 episode to make you feel better after seeing characters lives being completely ruined by technology.
If the scene from 3:00 was not in the movie about the rats walking around with in the cage connected to the brain machine . The movie would’ve been crazy as fuck since it would make it look like the father was looking into the daughters brain while she was watching the tv show
Also near the beginning of the episode there is a tv ad playing in the background for “the grain” which is the memory device they all have in the entire history of you episode
When I heard her sing NIN's Right Where It Belongs in black mirror I fucking lost my shit. That was my first concert ever and one of my favorite memories ever.
The problem is that all episodes of season 5 are 'light hearted' and with a obvious story. A little more mind fuck would have been great. I watched a good series, but not black mirror
@@Superpiplups this whole season sucked ass, nothing about this season was "mind fucking" all the stories was predictable and about morals which isnt the theme of the series
This was so really good. I found myself laughing and getting happy when they saved Ashley. Aside from the robot and technology I was shocked that that storyline about Ashley was also a truth based storyline about how artists are controlled with drugs, killed and how the conscious mind can be stolen and used to experiment on. I didn't get how Ashley 0 could be alive from her coma and the robot was still with an active mind too. My niece's little LuvaBella gave me the creeps last Christmas.
This is the one episode that went over the cliff for me. It had such a great workup...a great emotional story, heartfelt and heartbreaking....and then it suddenly went off the cliff and turned into comedy. It famously “jumped the shark” and became entirely satirical and goofy. I did not like this episode...I did like it up until the two sisters joined forces. Then it just got weird.
Mary Mukamb - That it might have some real-life elements doesn’t really have any bearing on whether I feel it’s well done or not. Some biopics just suck, not because the story is bad, but because of how it’s presented. This short film began as a heartfelt moratorium of the effects of fame and stardom while ignoring serious mental health issues...but then suddenly turns into a comedy about 2/3 into the film. I lost interest once things began getting seriously goofy. But...that’s just my opinion.
Many people say that the episode needed to be darker, or have a great reveal, but it was supposed to be that flat. Rachel, at the end, was running away, because she doesn't like the new Ashley. She watched her through her TV or the phone or Ashley Too. She can't get that image that Asley O is trapped in out of her head. That is why, for example, when depressed, flatlined, fresh-out-of-a-coma-Ashley woke up, she said "OMG I'm such a big fan!". That could have been a dark Moment, Ashley Too trying to basically kill her human self. There were darker moments, like the pills or the traps. But Rachel doesn't see what doesn't fit her view on things and ignores it. Just like us, when Miley changed her image after Hannah Montana we were all like "Nah...". And that's what it's supposed to be. A cliche disney movie, because Rachel only learns from the Media- and they only want to have 4% of you.
Everyone is saying Miley acted her butt off, and I couldn’t see a lick of decent acting from her or anyone this episode. It was all stiff. Maybe Jacks’ actress was the best acted but this episode was a shit show.
I really loved the "it's only using 4% of my brain" part...really reminds society that we don't truly know all these celebrities or people we love. Only a part of them that they've chosen to show. Heck it doesn't even have to be real. Some celebrities of course are true and down to earth. Others I'm sure have been fake at times. It's just a good friendly reminder to never pretend you know someone better than they know themselves. You never get the full picture even with your closest friends or family...you'll never know 100% everything about a person...not every thought they've had, not every change they went through, not all their likes and dislikes etc. You just gotta accept that. It's not a bad thing. However, it doesn't mean you can't get to know a person well or still love parts about famous people😊
Miley’s manager used to be her mother Tish Cyrus. And I remember them having a huge conflict back in 2011/2012 - what if Ashley’s aunt represents Miley’s mother Tish?
marishkaspirit nope, back in 2012 Tish was very involved in Miley’s music career. Tish went so far that she prohibited the release of Morning Sun (i.e) which was then released when Miley dropped her as a manager. PERIODT.
another Easter egg is when Ashley's aunt and the music producer are talking about the songs, Miley is singing 'Anyone Who Knows What Love Is' from 5 million merits
nah, the other two were decent, and I really enjoyed smithereens because that could easily take place right now. They seemed very black mirror to me. Sure, they weren't as dark as many of the other episodes but they were still engaging. I feel like the fans aren't happy unless they get a mindfuck but that's not what black mirror's about However this episode was really cheesy... the first half was okay but it went downhill from there. Definitely the worst of the 3
It's becoming a "thing" to rage on stories for not being exactly what you want. People need to just enjoy the story for what it is and go write their own stories if they want something different.
@Mia Stewart-Chamberlain while you are correct for the most part, there are many episodes with happy endings or no dark twists, even the very first episode is outside of "the norm" for black mirror.
@Mia Stewart-Chamberlain I completely agree, more than anything a good story, for me, is one I can't predict outcomes consistently and also a story that causes an emotional response from me. Those two things make a great story imo
This didn’t feel like a black mirror episode , but honestly I’m not complaining. Funny how it called out Disney hardcore in this. This is the only black mirror episode with a happy ending. I like the other types of episodes that make you really think, and that’s what this season lacked. But these are so well made that I really didn’t care. I just hope the next season will be more like previous seasons

its another one like san junipero. Not all black mirror episodes have a dark or sad ending. The important thing is the story it tells on the way to the ending, a lesson about technology and holding a mirror up to society as it is today.

This episode is very dark, if you’re capable of understanding it and how it’s a very True representation of the modern music industry
Miley seems to enjoy it. She loves Terry Richardson.
I think this episode is stupid because everyone understands how dark the music industry is and that's why it's not good

This whole episode is one big analogy to Miley Cyrus’ life:
- Wears a wig like Hannah Montana.
- Wants to do mature music and be taken seriously like Miley.
- Ashley Eternal = Hannah Montana Forever (the name of the last season of the show)
- Rachel is the typical target audience of Hannah Montana (15 year old girl)
- Miley was hospitalized because of an allergic reaction in 2014, like Ashley O.
- The aunt and her three baboons: Disney.
- Ashley Too in the beginning is Miley Cyrus with a Disney channel filter. When the filter is off she rebels like Miley did back in the day.

for all the people who are saying that this episode was bad, and underwhelming... not all black mirror episodes have to have a bad ending, i think i the writers really had fun with this one, with the protagonists coming on top and discovering themselves. it would be boring if all black mirror episodes end in despair, and only watching to satisfy some sort of fix of depression.

Nobody cares that it doesn't have a bad ending. People are complaining that it became a goofy disney episode by the end, which is completely out of character for a show of this caliber. Or the caliber it used to be, I should say.

It’s actually kind of refreshing to see a Black Mirror episode with a happier ending rather than every single episode being tragic and depressing. I hope every season will have at least 1 episode to make you feel better after seeing characters lives being completely ruined by technology.
Also subtle shots during this episode to how the music industry is about contracts singers sign. They have to perform how they are controlled
One of the most brilliant episodes...it felt different but I feel it was supposed to feel different. Like a Disney movie on purpose
If the scene from 3:00 was not in the movie about the rats walking around with in the cage connected to the brain machine . The movie would’ve been crazy as fuck since it would make it look like the father was looking into the daughters brain while she was watching the tv show

Yea, this is the majority consensus, meaning that the episode was truly poorly written. Unfortunately for the fans.
I think it was well-written, not even mentioning that it is completely based on a real life story.
I was thinking Ashley o would die and Rachel would “replace” her just she would turned therefore aunt would control her .
So they were planning to make Ashley Hatsune Miku basically...
“Guitar” : gets called a guitar several times....is a bass
Me: sighs in musician
_sighs in E flat_
You called Jack's bass a guitar through the whole video Davie504 would be disappointed.
He would slap 'em.
I really didn't like this pisode. The humor and acting was really cheesy. The plot seemed really recycled too.
The whole season disappointed me tbh. Not what I was expecting from BM
Everyone is saying Miley acted her butt off, and I couldn’t see a lick of decent acting from her or anyone this episode. It was all stiff. Maybe Jacks’ actress was the best acted but this episode was a shit show.
Amen. Agreed.
It's a dark parody of teen movies, and everything in it is mocking the genre itself...
@@luimun6247 That's fine. But the episode was bad.
I like the way you explained it and the perspective you've shown. You have a keen eye and good analysis. I totally agree
And I remember them having a huge conflict back in 2011/2012 - what if Ashley’s aunt represents Miley’s mother Tish?
and back in 2011 was when Hannah Montana aired its last episode.
Wasn't her father the manager? He was also the one who had the idea of her concept as I remember. Mother wasn't really involved to my knowledge..
marishkaspirit nope, back in 2012 Tish was very involved in Miley’s music career. Tish went so far that she prohibited the release of Morning Sun (i.e) which was then released when Miley dropped her as a manager. PERIODT.
Fibonacci I wonder if that fueled her “we can’t stop” era. Because, she felt so constricted.
miley really loves her mother though
Why is no one talking about the willow grain commercial in the background about halfway through the episode??
Yes, I forgot about that...
This was an amazing episode, I love black mirror!
Great video!! There was also an Easter egg when we can hear (I think) Ashley o singing anyone who knows what love is, the song in 15 million merits

nah, the other two were decent, and I really enjoyed smithereens because that could easily take place right now. They seemed very black mirror to me. Sure, they weren't as dark as many of the other episodes but they were still engaging. I feel like the fans aren't happy unless they get a mindfuck but that's not what black mirror's about
However this episode was really cheesy... the first half was okay but it went downhill from there.

Another easter egg type thing you missed, Saitogemu is the name of the company from the Playtest episode. (9:50)
