I played in a band where the singer made a rule that we should only carry our own gear (he only had a microphone at that point), the rest of the band largely ignored this rule. The singers attitude soon changed when he bought a PA, however we would refuse to help him citing his rule.
The band didn't last long. 😂

Was that the main reason? 🙂 I'm not being nosey, I am kind of in the process of making a study of what are the essential ingredients of a happy band and what are the obvious but also the subtle deal breakers. So, if you don't mind sharing your piece of mind.

Picture this - I‘m finished a gig and the sound engineer and a member of the audience very kindly help me out to my car with my kit (hardware etc.). When we got out into the street lights I realised that the member of the audience was a world famous musician who was at the top of his career at that time!

There's a reason a lot of stagehands and live event techs are drummers too... We're already used to carrying the band, might as well get paid for it 😅
(all the love from a former roadie/drum tech/monitor engineer, 13 years out of the game and picking up drumming again to improve my motor nerve skills after nerve damage, no clue why it took me the best part of 8 years after the accident to realise it would help my brain remap my left leg!)

I love getting to a show early and helping with loading in the gear. I've made some cool friends, gotten to meet musicians I admire, and they're often more than happy to comp your ticket, or get you a shirt or whatever.
And it's always helpful to support your local musicians and scene. You get to help and network a little, and keep the music going through a lot of goodwill and favors that make it all possible. So if the band is selling their own merch before and after the set, and they trust you, offer to work the table while they play. Or just get some good pictures and videos to help with their social media presence when you get to tag the band, show and venue. Throw out the empty cups and bottles at the end of the night, if you're in a more diy space that could use the help. It goes a long way to make sure everyone is having a good time and gets to do it all again.
Most of us are going to be lucky to break even doing this outside our day jobs, but a show is like an oasis in a desert to many people. Good music, good company, some dancing.
And if maybe you're not exactly old enough, or have enough money to normally see the show, nobody asks questions about whoever looks like they're with the bands 😉

Most things I'm happy to manage by myself, though additional hands to ferry drums to and from the car are always welcome. But a hand with the coffin (hardware box) is absolutely mandatory.
Also, don't pile all the drums where the drums are actually going to go. It just means I have to move them out of the way again before I can set them up.

This video and this comment section makes me quite thankful for my bandmates. We all just load out until the stage is clear. Everyone kinda has their setup and breakdown roles, but no one is going to sit and watch a bandmate struggle when they could carry a piece of gear. I'm a guitarist with an intentionally portable gigging setup, so I definitely give more than I take, but it's worth it for that kind of culture in a band

Back in another life when I fronted a band, I managed-through amazing feats of Tetris-to fit my guitar and my drummer’s entire kit in my 2004 Hyundai Tiburon.
Now that I have come to drumming myself, I have realized how much real estate drums actually occupy and how much drums and hardware cost relative to other members of the band. Yikes.

I'm happy to let the singer interact with the audience and other bands after a gig, she's much better at that than me. She does drive half of our gear everywhere though so more than makes up for any perceived lack of roadie duties. In other bands where they just go chill with their own friends it's not so acceptable!

In my first band, our drummer never moved anything. He left a drum set at the singer's house. We would transport his stuff to and from the gig. The drummer was a tad unreliable and so he sort of forced us to do it. We used to joke about how great it must be to be in a band with us.

On the contrary, when I was playing bass in a band, the drummer would go mingle with the crowd and the rest of us had to clear his stuff. The other bands, that were waiting, would come help and be like “where the hell is your drummer?” As a drummer now, in hindsight, I think maybe I was too careful with his gear. He always stood up between songs and would do little fills all of the time between songs. It was so annoying😠
