I have been using Excel for over 15 years and I still consider myself a beginner. I recently left my job and am using this “in the meantime” period for professional development courses. Stumbling across your channel was the best professional development gift that I can give me self-a perfect start to 2022! I just completed your intro course and can see how I’ve wasted a great deal of time. I am a research administrator/analyst and work with data. After watching these video, I can only imagine the amount of time I have wasted. I cannot wait to get to more advance courses on pivot tables, dashboards, etc., which I hope will help me to prepare detailed projections and comprehensive budgets. Obrigada!
Always like a freeze but never felt the need for split panes. I’ve inherited a 100+ tabbed workbook so use the New Window function with Alt+Tab to swap around. Works for me! If you have a monster workbook, you can also right-click lower left on the tab name arrows to get a scrollable pop-up list of all the tabs in the workbook. Only learned that a few weeks ago.
Thank you Mynda. Everything very clear, as always. It strikes me that in databases with more than 50 headings, hardly anyone uses Freeze Panes. I consider it something very practical. Merry Christmas Mynda!!!
Hi Mynda. I completely agree! Love Freeze Panes.. do not love Split Panes. Also, you showed a hidden gem in there.. SHIFT+CTRL+mouse wheel to move right/left. I've always done the keyboard of ALT+PG DN/UP, but that jumps a whole frame at a time. Love the L/R scroll option. So, thanks for that and all the other great tips and videos this year. Looking forward to more in 2021 :)) Happy Holidays and Thumbs up!!
Good and simple video. I don't see a big purpose of Split panes (it has of course), but if you can achieve it with Freeze panes or Arrange Windows...simpler without confusing. Thanks for the input!
Hi, really good explaination. I have a question at 02:04 you said it's possible to horizonally scroll using a shortcut in Excel 365. Is horizontal scroll only available on 365 or we can do in Excel standalone also? I have Excel 2016. I am seeing columns freeze first time. I always thought it's only rows that get frozen 😅
Nice to have an Excel beginners video for a change. I never really found any practical use of split panes so I can understand why it would be annoying. Btw where can I get a "geek" Tee like that? Happy Holidays!
thank you, that's all made clear!👍🏻 (I'd share it with my friends, but alas, I have none - uh...I mean, those who use "split panes" ain't *my* friends! )😉
I agree that freeze panes is usually best. Unfortunately I have very recently found that freeze panes now exhibits buggy behaviour. The frozen area becomes unstable when scrolling out of it using my MacBook Pro (2019) Touchpad, running under the latest MacOS Sonoma v14.1.1. So I now have to use split panes instead.
To be fair freeze panes and split panes serve different purposes. Freeze panes is more of a viewing tool while split screens is better as a reviewing the data tool. Possible uses for split screens include: changing values in one section of the spreadsheet and being able to the see affect of those changes in the results section of the spreadsheet; holding a formula column to the far right in place while scrolling through the various precedent columns on the left side (precedent being cells used by the formula). So a finished / published spreadsheet would be better served by freeze panes but split screens can be useful in validating, troubleshooting or testing scenarios.
Hi Rone, not sure what you mean by “set up trending” as the data itself will reveal if there is a trend of not when you visualise it in a line or scatter chart. You can also add trend lines in the chart elements.
@@MyOnlineTrainingHub Thank you. I guess I meant more how to use it from the data to charts but I've watched a couple of other tutorials and have the general Idea. It doesn't look to bad.
Thanks, Mynda. I have Date, Actual, Target in a table in Columns A-C and rows 1-999. I also have a chart in Cells G1:N20. I would like to be able to scroll through the data table, while having the chart always being visible (not scrolling). Is there a way to do this?
Is it possible to keep columns to the left in a fixed view whilst scrolling subsequent columns vertically? I don't need them in sync. But I do want to see the first columns (A-K) rows (1-50) always in the view, whilst columns (L onwards) scrolling vertically (1 onwards).
Hy Mynda, greeting from Indonesia.. You are truly MVP, i am budget team in a corporate, but weak in excel especially the conditional formula like if (single if, multiple if), ifand, and other if formula, Sumif, sumifs and multiple formula in one cell (if+sumif+sumifs+other if formula).. Would u like to make the tutorial please, so i can know the basic or the concept to make those conditional formula.. Sory for the bad sentences (im learning too). Many thanks Mynda 🙏
@@MyOnlineTrainingHub Of course, I fully understand that concept, you don't understand my question. I "freeze" both sections and then: -The left "freeze" pane moves under the top "freeze" pane when scrolling down. -The top "freeze pane" moves under the left "freeze" pane when scrolling to the far right. I'm asking if there is a way to maybe "freeze" them that the "freeze panes" don't move under the other as mentioned. They become completely stationary.
Hello! I have a question: is it possible to freeze only half of the page? What I mean is that I would like to keep the right side of my page (let's say from column c through the end of the sheet) stuck so I can have the summary of my data on sight every time meanwhile i scroll down the left side of the page (so only the first three columns will scroll down) where is placed the table with all the bulk of data. Is it possible to do something like this? I can't find any solution, it's really frustrating. Hope you can help me and I hope that I explained my self in a clear way, English is not my first language. Many thanks
Madam, is there any way to make a form and store the collected datas in a excel sheet?and i want to use that system with my smartphone. Pls mam your reply will be highly appreciated ❤️💐
When panes are frozen, it may appear that columns are hidden when they are just out of view. I had a worksheet with columns A and B out of view, with column C as the first visible column. I forgot the panes were frozen and I tried to unhide columns A and B. That was a very frustrating experience - try as I might - including using a VBA command to unhide all columns - columns A and B would not come into view. I eventually realized that all I had to do was unfreeze panes first.
Just a little musical reminder of which technique is better (this song always pops into my head when I set up Freeze Panes): ruclips.net/video/wHo43B6nu60/видео.html
Split panes are a complete waste of time IMO, but nevertheless you could have both by using a separate view of the same file with freeze on one and split on the other UGGGHHH

Great to hear you found my videos helpful, Tia!
You are really great at articulating technical jargon in layman's terms.Thank you so much for your precious time.
So nice of you 🙏😊
Nice tutorial, simply explained everything. Hopefully waiting for another one..
Thanks...
Glad you liked it, Shakthi!
Mynda, You have made 2020 a bit more bearable with your clever and useful Excel tips. Happy New year.
So pleased to hear that, Warren! More to come in 2021 :-)

What a great youtube channel.. Love from srilanka 🇱🇰
Glad you like it :-)
OMG you saved me. I was getting so frustrated because all the other videos are treating the split and freeze as the same thing!!!
Glad I could help!
Thank you Mynda for another year of fun; and brain pain :-}}}

🤣

Nice overview; would you mind doing a video on custom views and why would you use this option.
Thanks, Tommy! I'll add custom views to my To Do list, but no promises as to when :-)

Completely agree, Alex. I find that most people use split panes when they really should be using freeze panes.
Do you have any vids on how to setup trending with data and charts?

Hi Jack, there's no setting as such, but you could use the scrolling table technique: www.myonlinetraininghub.com/excel-scroll-sort-table
Is it possible to keep columns to the left in a fixed view whilst scrolling subsequent columns vertically? I don't need them in sync. But I do want to see the first columns (A-K) rows (1-50) always in the view, whilst columns (L onwards) scrolling vertically (1 onwards).
Hi Martyn, you'd have to duplicate the window (View tab > New Window) to fix the rows on 1-50 while also scrolling another set of columns vertically.

Is there a way to freeze both the top row and side column in a way that they both don't move when scrolling up/down or sideways?
Yes, select the cell at the intersection of the row and columns you want to freeze, then select Freeze Panes.
@@MyOnlineTrainingHub Of course, I fully understand that concept, you don't understand my question.
I "freeze" both sections and then:
-The left "freeze" pane moves under the top "freeze" pane when scrolling down.

For this you're best to use Split Panes as shown in the video.
I share the same feeling when opening files with misused split panes :)
Glad I’m not the only one 😊

Glad I'm not the only one :-D
My freeze panes often glitches and gets stuck, and requires resetting... Any ideas why this happens?
I haven't experienced this, so no idea why it would happen, sorry.
Muchas gracias, yo prefiero usar Freeze panes, saludos
You’re welcome 😊
It “pains” me to do splits. Ahhhhhhhh
:-D too funny, David!

Big thanks!
