Finishing the Crib - Adding a sliding changing table

  • We are both so happy with how this project turned out. The initial design was for a changing table/dresser which quickly swapped over to a crib. But by adding the sliding changing table on top it is the best of both.
When the weather warms up we will eventually be painting and sealing the crib, but until then it will work perfectly for us. One more thing is officially checked off the list as we continue to prepare for our new arrival.

Favourite parts : Lori bringing a coffee to Cody at the workbench, reassuring Irie that she’s not in trouble just a wee bit of glue on the tail. You two are going to be great parents as you’re obviously great partners! It’s no small feat to move across country and build a home and have a happy partnership, the skills that you have will set you up for future generations ❤

Great job on the baby's bed the workbench is nice to have to build things you need for the house but maybe next year you'll have a shelter built to get both you and it in out of the elements and hopefully you'll be able to afford at least a snow plow to put on your 6x6 to push snow away from the house and the mill and workshop because I know you need these for sure on your homestead.

Nice job on the crib 👍🏼. It probably would help to add an additional box that would bring the mattress up higher while the baby is an infant easier on your back as well vs bending all the way down, just a thought 😉 ❤

I am so impressed with your desire and motivation to build your babies bed, and the sliding changing table just tops it off! You both are no dummy! You are both so determined to accomplish anything you set your minds to. I know this will one day be a guest cabin, but I can't wait until it's completely finished and your forever home, is finished as well. I enjoy watching you both move forward with all your plans. You have made it through your first winter, and you should be so proud of yourselves. Just a thought though, thats really deep right now, that will have several months before pulling up on it, maybe you could put a drop box in that would raise bottom of crib up about a foot or so, to keep from bending so far down, and also less draft from floor. But you have to decide that, it looks great. I bet a stain and varnish will really bring out the wood grain. Love it.

The crib and changing table came out awesome. I had my kids by c-section and no way could bend over that far down. Even a natural birth, would think that is going to be hard to do. Maybe do a small drop in like the changing table for new born stage? My daughter had a play pen that had that and it was awesome for first few months. Anyway, love how it turned out.

end grain acts like a straw when you apply glue to it. it sucks it up and that is a good thing. if you wait about 5 minutes and then apply another round of glue you will get a better glue joint. just a little tip. you two are doing a great job.

Working with pine which has a lot of pitch it can build up on cutting edges and in this case in the collet of the router. When you tighten it, it won't grab as well and as you are running it on a board the bit will tend to "walk" out of the collet changing your adjustment by a little or a lot. If you see the brownish build up soak the collet in gas or lacquer thinner either works well, then scrub it with a toothbrush and a Q tip to remove it. Presto, good as new.

I am utterly amazed at what Cody has managed to create! I notice that his set of tools it growing steadily and that is very good, but buy a quality tool that will last for years. Better wait than buy low quality tools! And with those tools it is much easier to create something substantial, which you can enjoy making and be proud of the results! I like the crib, which at the same time can serve as a toddlers bed! And the change table concept is weel though out. It is a great activity to work as husband and wife, father and mother to prepare for the time the baby arrives. At least the weather is more and more developing in your favour! Goo luck and success. May the Lord bless and strengthen you as you await your firt child!

Awesome, perfect for a small foot print. You are getting so good at this stuff. I know you are going to be busy very soon with the baby but next winter and maybe late summer the things you will be making for your family will be great. Next maybe the wall behind the crib area and if you get the closet end wall up to block drafts from the door being opened to the crib.
Love your journey thanks for sharing with us all.
Such a blessing you will be to your baby. Teaching them so much.
