Imagine doing the role so well that they retcon the entire character to be you.
Honestly Mortal kombat the movie 1 had a better vision for the actual characters than the orignal game itself, I only wish they copied Raiden from MK1 so we could get the actual lightning bad ass, instead of "I MOST CONSOLT THE ELDER GODS TO WHIPE MY ASS" raiden.

Watch the original movie in '95. he sounded WAYYYY different back then. why he's speaking so slow & why Shang Tsung is speaking so slow, is because first, he IS the guy who plays Shang Tsung NOW, & second, cuz he's near 70, & he clearly has problem speaking quickly these days.

MK11 Aftermath was such a great showcase of his acting as Shang Tsung. I just loved watching him be sinister. I had to keep reminding myself that he was a snake in the grass.
He and the guys who play: solid snake (mgs), venom snake (mgs 5), sam fisher, geralt, ghost (destiny), josh (until dawn), kassandra (ac o), aloy (horizon zd), kratos, lara croft (remakes), lester crest (gta 5), marcus fenix, natan drake, vaas montenegro, pagan mihn, rat bag, senua, master chief (halo 4 and 5) and john marston!

Yeah unlike many movie adaptations, Mortal kombat respected the original source material. It was a very good adaption. The 2nd sucks.
If Brandon Lee hadn't tragically passed, he would have been Johnny Cage instead of Lindon Ashby.
The first movie is ok. And have a great soundtrack.
Silent Hill, Mortal Kombat and the first Resident Evil are a good movie adaptation of the games.
KryBastard Dead or Alive too. But don’t get me wrong, the movie is kinda stupid, the personality of the characters is not respected but the franchise spirits is respected, especially if you compare to dragon ball evolution, both street fighters movies or double dragon.
@@Elfo_Scuro You can add Sonic to that list too. Watched it recently, enjoyed the movie. And if we consider the length, Warcraft was a good one too. Should have been like 3 hours long, in my opinion, but all things considered it was good enough. Enough fanservice, but I brought a friend who knows nothing about it, yet said it was a good movie. So was even enjoyable for a complete non-gamer.

I am so glad this man lived to see himself in MK 11 to be apart of something so awesome.
Some characters just cannot be performed by anybody else. For Shang Tsung, that is Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa and anybody else that plays him in the future, they'll do their best, but it will be difficult for them to top this guy's portrayal. And it really is great that he is still alive and can see what his performance looks like in the finished product.
It was great to have him back for Aftermath. I enjoyed Tagawa's portrayal during the movie, he did a fantastic job, but Aftermath was just Shang Tsung flexing his skills in deception from start to finish, and I honestly don't think it would have been anywhere near as awesome without Tagawa. His voice is like honey with every line he speaks, but you can also hear him silently mocking everyone the whole time. My favorite scene was when he realized that Liu Kang actually played him, he just sounded so delighted by the idea that the honorable Liu Kang would actually play the long game behind his back and Tagawa's delivery was just so good. God bless this man and his glorious talent.

The greatest Cary Hiroyuki Tagawa, still looking at his photo or listening to his voice, I immediately flashback his image from Mortal Kombat 1995.
This man, RDJ and Ryan Reynolds were the perfect casting choices for their respective roles, him being on MK11 was the best fan service ever.

I loved johnny Tsunami when I was a kid, but when I saw his grandpa was Shang tsung I was like "ohhhhhh!....how.....ummmm IDK about this". It took me a while to get use to, but I always had a feeling his character was hiding his dark side lol

Shang Tsung might have all the powers, but this man gave him souls.
I can certainly tell which era this man is from, the generation. Such compassion for younger folks and a willingness to share and to teach. Grouches like me who are starting to rack up the years could do well to learn from him.

He's a great actor. He can play over the top and be completely realistically believable delivering the cheesiest of lines. Underrated actor. Check out his other roles and you can see what I mean. His more serious roles show his range.
Last role I saw him in is the new "lost in space" series in Netflix he was one of the scientist living on the dying planet
The guy is Oscar calibre... No joke. He's amazing. I'm not trying to start and agenda or race war... But really if he hadn't been Asian and typecasted as Asian bad guy, the guy would have been huge with his talent. He elevates every movie I've seen him in.

It's always so interesting to hear Cary's American accent after watching him in Mortal Kombat and other films/shows where he acted using a semi-Chinese or Japanese accent.

Shang Tsung himself personified. It is a must to make a movie with him as Shang Tsung.
I remember when I watched it as a kid. When the movie started and the logo popped out through the flames and the song started playing with that voice yelling MORAL KOMBAAAAT, the entire room erupted. Everyone started applauding and screaming, something you only see in huge football matches like the finals of world cups etc when a team scores. It wasn't a normal movie experience. I've never seen it in any other movie, be it Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, Harry Potter, Avenger or anything else, no matter how big the franchise. That moment in that room playing Mortal Kombat, has never been achieved by any other film.

I totally agree with you on that chupasaurus, and you're right about Shao Kahn, it was great they brought back Cary Hiroyuki Tagawa as Shang Tsung, it also would have been cool if they bring back Brian Thompson who portrayed Shao Kahn, in the second movie, his voice was so memorable to me!

There are some actors that will always be remembred as certain characters.RDJ as Iron man , Hugh as Wolverine , Arnold as the Terminator / Conan and Tagawa-san as Shang Tsung !
And he was in Hachiko movie. He's an underrated actor.
The universe has a funny way of putting the EXACT right person in the EXACT right place and time. This man was officially immortalized the moment he accepted the role in the first movie. Much like how Chistopher Lee is remembered for being Saruman, so too shall Cary Tagawa be remembered for being Shang Tsung.
