The atypical season finale that is the next episode is one of my favourite episodes of television! I'm looking forward to it!
Same here. Restless is a multifaceted gem.
Especially when you rewatch the episode after watching the series it makes it even better
Season 1: Xander brings Buffy back to life so she can kill the Master.
Season 2: Xander comes up with the plan to take out the Judge, and rescues Giles so Buffy can concentrate on beating Angel without any distractions.
Season 3: Xander organizes the entire military attack on the Mayor.
Season 4: Xander comes up with the plan to take out Adam.
Xander saves the world a lot. He's not useless at all!
He also saved the world in "The Zeppo" by preventing his friends from being blown up as they were fighting the apocalypse.
I'd say that he inspires the S4 plan, but doesn't necessarily come up with it. But that's not to take anything away from the numerous times he ends up coming through in the clinch during the series, and indeed playing the pivotal role in saving both the day and the world.
The Joss self-insert thing with Xander gets incredibly overstated. Joss said he relates to Xander more sure, but Xanders far from a self insert. He’s a deeply flawed character that makes tons of mistakes and rarely has good things happen to him.
Not to mention Joss hardly writes all the episodes. Au contraire!
@@MsMaggyW spot on for both of you (Troika S), all I get from Joss on Xander is that he modeled some of the character in S1 on himself but people have really taking this way overboard.
When Xander cast the love spell and all women fell in love with him, even an infatuated Buffy could sense there was something very wrong.
When Jonathan had the whole world deify him, Buffy also had an intuition it was artificial.
So it's less surprising that she could feel something was wrong in her friend circle because of Spike's manoeuvers.
I like the confrontation with Adam and Buffy going Goddess Mode through the combined power of all her friends is spectacular. And yeah, the goal being not victory but specifically mutual slaughter changes the evil plan a lot.
As for the next episode, I LOVE the next episode. One of the best in the series.

Although I love season 4 for the comedy value mainly due to Spike season 5 is my absolute favourite. I’m so excited to re-watch it with you. Buckle up for an intense ride!

Interesting take on season 5. For me it was a tedious season with Buffy on a downwards slope. Season 5 was bland, the later seasons uneven. There are two standouts yet to come that would be hard to appreciate without context, but one per season is tough going. Season 2 of Angel, on the other hand, was probably it's best. Joss' creative energy was absorbed by Firefly soon after. I liked Angel alumni Tim Minear's writing, who also moved to Firefly.
Season 4 is my favourite in terms of amount of brilliant episodes, but the arc isn't that great.
Season 5 is the best season though in terms of the 'big bad'. It's the most epic imo.
Same!! I adore season 5!! Think it gets overlooked because it doesn’t have the strongest opening and also because of the Dawn hate.
Side note: I loathe her character in 6 and 7 but I like the purpose of her in 5 and honestly think the overall arc and story of the season is up there with Angel in season 2 as the strongest in the whole show
@@fredeso7844 The majority of Buffy fans consider Season 5 to be the best, hence no need to be surprised. Most rank Season 2 high as well, though I personally felt that the first half had too many Season 1 style filler episodes (Some Assembly Required, Inca Mummy Girl, Reptile Boy, Ted, Bad Eggs). Season 3 is another favorite, and probably has the most fun eps. The rest are often debated, but the first season is likely considered the weakest by default, while 4 & 6 have more fan favorite eps than 7.
The next episode is strange and atypical and one of my favourite (and one that become better and better with rewatches)

Season 5 is fantastic, it’s my absolute favorite! I also think that since Restless is so unique, it might be cool to watch it again when you completely finish the show and see what you pick up on.
Love that you recognised that this episode brought up how the scoobies have been drifting apart. Buffy and Willow's talk is lovely and much needed, and Xander, Giles and Willow being essential to Buffy taking out Adam is such a great aspect of this episode.
It's always fun to see people get to this episode and then go ...what on Earth is going to happen in the season finale? SO looking forward to seeing your thoughts on the next one.

Well, crushing Adam's power source wouldn't have been a wise move. It's Uranium inside, she'll have irradiated the whole Initiative undergrounds. Buffy herself might haven't been affected thanks to the spell, but the three others just two rooms away... So it had been a better call to use magic to make it disappear.
you forget that uranium is naturally occurring. without a runaway reaction or bomb-grade enrichment, it's very likely that buffy could have simply crushed the reactor and they all could have walked away without issue.
Was there ever an explanation as to why the Angel episode “Sanctuary” wasn’t posted? Are we just skipping that?

Maybe there weren’t enough people interested in Angel as opposed to Buffy? Maybe there was an issue with editing and he didn’t have time to fix it so he just kept it exclusively on Patreon? Maybe he’s having copyright issues? Could really be anything. I would’ve wanted to see his reaction to it, obviously, but I’ve seen both shows more than once. It’s not like I’m missing out on the story by him not posting it.
The Colonel's reaction to the magic gourd is actually quite important to understand fully the Initiative, cause it's a thing that puzzled a part of newcomers to the show : after three seasons, they're so much used to the supernatural element, that they believe because the government/Initiative knows about demons and vampires, they understand the mystic element of it. But they don't, they study them by the scientific approach, they don't believe in magic. And that's their mistake.
For Adam, it's more complicated, he is aware of magic, and even understand somehow how it works (He knew Jonathan's spell was unstable and will cause it's own disablement) but in the meantime, he is totally alienated to it (as he was the only one not affected by the said spell) and can't imagine how powerful it can be.

Yeah, everyone was surprised back when it first aired that they seemed to wrap it all up in a season finale sort of way, and that's been the take of every reactor as well. It's an inconsistent season, but it has some of the best episodes of the whole show (Hush and the Faith two-parter come to mind) and the first tv relationship that I ever found myself deeply caring about (Willow and Tara). Very curious about your take on the next one.
@@sisterdebmac I love how with both Oz and Tara, Whedon had created a setup where he knew that people would root for her to be with one person (Xander in S1-early S2, Oz in S4), then had her end up with someone the fans loved even more (Oz in S2, Tara in S4) only to have her get an opportunity with the person they'd been rooting for in the first place and no longer wanted in the picture (the Xander/Willow affair in S3, New Moon Rising in S4). Joss is a master of screwing with the fans.

Next is Restless and it is probably my favorite episode of the entire series. It is weird and won’t make sense until you finish the entire series. It is all foreshadowing and things that are to come. However I think it is still one of the most accurate depictions of how dreams truly are to be put on film.
Season's over. Adam's dead. 🤣 Actually, the trouble Spike stirred up, as Buffy phrased it in the elevator shaft, is the point of the season. It started with Buffy not telling The Scoobies about her struggles in the first episode of the season and The Scoobies not acknowledging those troubles. The drifting apart the season's theme was about (high school to college) continued through the season and came to a head in the argument in the previous episode when Spike made them aware "trouble was stirrup-able." Without realizing it, he potentially saved the group. The Initiative was just part of the trouble. Not really the point of the season. And because of that Joss decided Adam shouldn't be wrapped up in the finale.
Everyone's asking if you're posting Angel episodes anymore, but its only been two weeks since episode eighteen. Watching order can easily be different than a RUclips upload order.
Stopping after a part 1, not posting part 2, but posting effectively the third act, or epilogue, gee wonder why everyone's asking. In this case viewing and posting order should be the same.
@@shaunhoughton9261 I know why everyone's asking, but my point is two weeks is hardly any time considering some reaction viewers give up or stop or don't have the time, etc. for various degrees of reasons. He could have forgotten, not had time or numerous other reasons in-between. Two weeks doesn't bother me enough to ask even after _Five by Five,_ even if it bothers others. That was my point.

Posting my BUFFY REWATCH recap for ‘Primeval’. May contain spoilers.
This scene was so sweet. The OG Scooby Gang back together again. Buffy and Willow acknowledge that they've drifted apart throughout the Season. They all had their own individual things going on. Buffy dating Riley. Willow breaking up with Oz and then dating Tara. Xander living in the basement, struggling with finding and keeping employment, and not being apart of the college life with Buffy and Willow. And Giles, going through a midlife crisis now that he has no job and no responsibility to Buffy or Willow and Xander. They say their sorry's for the finale of the Season and make up. How fitting when the way to save the day requires them to be attuned to each other and in harmony like never before to perform the enjoining spell.
I just love how it's brought up by Buffy that Willow had all the right to keep Tara a secret given how much fear she was feeling over it. Coming out is difficult. I've been there. I know she doesn't have a huge story with identifying that her sexuality is different but I appreciated what little there was. Especially for back then. In 2000. It's a huge deal and they had to be so careful.
This is one of the best episodes of the series when you have the history of the characters

Adam was such an annoying boss in chaos bleeds. invincible save for him doing damage to himself, but at least you get to play as Spike for a full level.

Excited for the finale. Adam just never landed with me. I kind of only like the goofy episodes or the episodes with faith in season 4. But I'm interested to see how you react to the finale.

This was in 2000 so the Matrix was very influential in all genres, so Buffy took some inspiration too with its own unique twist I feel. You are not alone in thinking that Adam is a very underwhelming big bad compared to those who came before, but wait until you see the next one. No spoilers, maybe you already know. Season 5 is my favorite season of the entire show. A lot of good coming up.
It's the classic battle of spirit vs matter, humans as meat machines, or as fundamentally much more than the sum of our material parts. It is perfectly fitting that imbued with that totally unlocked pure human potential---spirit and matter---she dominates Adam utterly. And he can't even comprehend the source of her power (as she tells him).
I think Adam and season 4 in general are underrated. If there is fault with the season and it's villain, I lay it more at the feat of the shows producers for failing to develop him better and produce a more focused season. Nevertheless, for me it still ranks among my favorite 3 seasons (2,3, and 4).
That was, for all intents and purposes, the season finale. I think of the next episode as a mid-series intermission.
Hopefully, Thor, you have already seen another Whedon epic, "Cabin in the Woods". If not, don't take this as a spoiler, but there is a "sorta spoiler" contained here in what Adam did in the unlocking.

I may have said this before, but I think Adam looks like Frankenstein’s monster from Van Helsing (2004).
Since this came out in 2000 (Buffy ended in 2003), it's the other way around.
A recommendation TV show, one of the producers from Airwolf created his own Time Travel series called Quantum Leap. All 5 seasons are on Peacock. Theorizing that he could travel in time, within his own lifetime. Dr Sam Beckett lead elite group scientists to create Project Quantum Leap. Fearing he could lose funding, Dr Beckett stepped into Quantum Leap excellator and vanished. He awoke to find himself trapped in the past. Starring at mirror images that are not his own and driven by an unknown force to change history for the better. His only guide on this journey is Al Calavici. Al is An observer from his own time who appears in the form of hologram that only Sam can see and hear. So Dr Beckett finds himself leaping from life to life. Striving to put right what once went wrong. Hoping each time that his next leap will b3 the leap home.

I love the idea that Adam feels, and isn't completely wrong, that he can defeat Buffy one on one. Then everyone merged. Giles' knowledge of the arcane, Willows "inexperienced" power, plus the will of all of them. The ultimate power is the unity of the group.
This is a well executed idea. No ONE was a match for Adam, and his upgrades, but they were. Even the "dummies" behind the initiative caught on, she can be trusted, and "they" are not in control.
Don't worry, I thought he was a bad guy suddenly too on first watch 😂

I will defend Season 4 against any detractors purely for the excellent monster of the week eps, the Faith arc and the finale, but this episode really highlights that the plot was the weakest (imo) out of any Buffy season. It kind of peaked with the epic reveal of The Initiative in 4x07. They had some good ideas but I think they had a lot of behind the scenes disruptions, plus the first season of running two shows at once, that meant they didn't really reach their potential.

Are you not reacting to Angel anymore? This was probably my least favorite big bad showdown.
Probably because Adam wasn't meant to be the big bad, but the actress that played Maggie, the REAL big bad, wanted to do another show, so they had to rewrite it.
@@randomlibra That's a common misconception. Lindsay Grouse was only available for filming for a certain amount of time, which Joss and the other writers were aware of ahead of time. Joss always planned to kill Walsh. Lindsay only became available again towards the end of the season's shooting, so she was able to return in this episode as zombie Walsh. She's gone on record as having really enjoyed her time and experience working on the show, and I think it's unfair that this false narrative is told to every reactor in Season 4.
Still waiting for Angel's "Sanctuary". Still not watching any more Buffyverse until this posted, to be watched in correct order. At this point the fact it hasn't been posted is insulting.

Season 4 had some of the best individual episodes of the show, but overall was the weakest season of them all. It had the weakest villain in Adam, for a start. No spoilers, but the villain of next season is going to be tons better. I'm looking forward to your journey through that one.
Overall it was a good season and finale, but Adam just was never that compelling as a villain.
Season 4 villain finale was undercut by the actress playing Professor Walsh leaving early, it probably would have been more impactful to have the more interesting of the two there. But the next episode is amazing and I have been dying to see you react to it. From everything I have seen I think you will get it and not be bewildered and confused. Fingers crossed.
I hope for Season 5 you switch to 2 episodes in a video, cause this is going to take ages if not

@@Nicamon There's around 66 episodes left, and it's maybe 1 episode every week or 2, if it's going to be a year before it's finish, 2 if it's 1 episode every 2 weeks. And yeah it took 7 years to finish because there was no choice... it was still coming out
