If I had a chance to do it all over again I def woulda chosen an HBCU
As a Hampton alum, I REALLY appreciate this vid. And to those who say HBCUs should go public and get more funding...some have, but only if they're very well-known and fairly respected like Howard. We have a long way to go, and for that reason, HBCUs will continue to exist for the foreseeable future
I graduated from Norfolk State; NSU being a public assisted institution has benefitted us a lot in being able to have access to this public dollars. However, I also realize a lot of HBCUs have strong ties to the Church. Regardless, it’s important that our HBCUs finds ways of diversifying revenue, including seeking partnerships with the local community. I feel the legacy of HBCUs and the positive impact they have had on individuals’ life trajectories will ensure a certain number of Black student will choose attend an HBCU.

They have historical significance that is worthy keeping alive(like aushwitz) for that alone, but at this point, they are more like a jewish college or catholic university. That line at the start about it not being a choice in the past is something she can hold up as a win as now it is a choice, but the option is still there. The most important thing, especially in light of repatriation discussions, is to ask how many black people go there that would never get more than high school without them? I am willing to bet that number is significant. This is a way to reallocate funds to the black community that increases vertical mobility.
HBCU'S need government funding, if we had the funding that PWI'S receive the enrollment would automatically increase.

Having grown up in predominantly black cities in the north and midwest before moving to the deep south in my 30's (ex-husband's job brought us here) I have been repeatedly shocked a how blatant the racial segregation is and how overt the bigotry is. I have worked a great deal of big events and catering in the NOLA area and LSU grads have been some of the worst people I have met, not all, but many are entitled and have treated my black coworkers like garbage or completely ignored them until they had a white person's attention. This just wasn't something I was raised with and I honestly felt very naïve after living down here for a few years that this level of racial tension really exists and I hadn't realized it. I don't understand how I would feel to be raised in that environment, but I can see why the need for black colleges still stands in the south, and I also feel like it promotes more segregation, its a complicated issue, but defunding hbcus is not the answer.
I graduated from an HBCU and am so glad I did. If you're Black and in America I recommend u attend one for at least one semester. It's probably the greatest experience of my life.

I always wanted to attend Howard University. Never possessed the funds. So I attended a PWI in my state. I donate to Howard University every year though.

Loved this coverage of HBCUs.
Many white vets have graduated from Tuskegee and many white pharmacists have graduated from FAMU. And countless others from other HBCUS...as always our cookout invitation is extended to everyone.
White people tend to only go to HBCUs for the well-paying fields like vet, pharma, etc. Otherwise, they don't even attempt to look at a HBCU.
HBCUs are very much still needed. I think they can target a wider audience but I still think they need to focus on persuading black high school students that HBCUs are the place for them. The need to take to blk communities and co-op with public schools in things like tutoring and getting blk public school students ready for college. So that there will be a stop to this talk that college is not for everyone until a good percentage of economic wealth and financial stability has grown and increased to a substantial level in the blk community. A lot of future possible blk student end up going to PWIs b/c of the horror stories they hear from former and blk student that graduated from HBCUs about lack of financial assistance and having to take out large amounts of loans .
And probably spreading knowledge in those communities about FAFSA, maybe even creating resources dedicated to doing it all for them like immigration law lol

How do you discuss HBCUS without discussing the 1st? Let be honest, to truly appreciate an institution you must at least attempt to understand the context in which it was created. Cheyney University or " the Institute for Colored Youth" paved the way for the rest of the HBCUS being erected in 1837. Not to be confused with Lincoln University "Ashmun Institute" founded in 1854. With Lincoln being the first to grant degrees, their facility was from Cheyney!

LSU, which routinely sends guys to the NFL, only has a $500 million endowment? I expected their endowment to be more.
When will HBCU start putting more focus on the US military black personnel. Their target audience is to narrow. As a veteran, I watch rise of online and distance education in many forms, yet we rally see HBCU frequent these spaces. Even with COViD, one would think things would changed. As a black veteran, I would have love for my Montgomery GiBill and Post 9-11 GiBill to go to a HBCU.
@Mira M It would be nice if they would get involved with the eArmyU, (it goes by a different name now, I think). After 20 years and Fayette State University in the only HBCU that’s embracing the the active duty black service members and really have more involvement with returning black veterans. I’m just see where they are leaving a lot of money on the table.

And no this is not segregation, which is something imposed by a dominant group, these kids can choose to go to white collages and white kids can choose to go to these colleges.
I don't see why these schools would be racist, anyone can attend. But with that said, it seems to be an issue of black americans wanting to force themselves into the white communities, for example the african american community owned more 100 years ago then they do today and when integration took place during 60s and so on, what most black people did was buy in other peoples community instead of their own. Now other people own the stores in black neighbourhoods at the same time aiming racism towards you.
Don't repeat the same mistakes regarding colleges and schools, there news articles all the time of black students facing racism in these places where they are minority and why would you want to force yourself into that place? These HBCUs are important and it's already been said that black students do better at HBCUs so black parents should come together and try to make these schools better for their children. Create your own.

What I'd like for the government to do is allow hbcu to expand north and west its dumb that we HAVE to move to another region to go to go to the colleges. We don't even need to start we can start different branches of the same colleges. Colleges do this all the time but hbcus cannot?😤
I am actually proud to see such institutions. I think these are one of the steps that black Americans should take establish institutions to feel the gap, banking institutions, business institutions and realestate that cater for the black society because the fact is the state and the system was never designed for people of color. This approach needs a total rebranding of the mental state of black Americans and x-rays blocks. We can see among the Jewish people how collectively they have established himself cater for the communities their people put various institutions within the United States there's several hundreds of them in different parts of the United States quietly pursuing the interests of the people because like black people or African Americans they have suffered tremendous ratio prejudice and they know exactly how important for them to unite in keeping their interests. I believe African Americans should have a nice based on one particular interest of having better people's life it should not be a political thing and they will find it difficult for the powers that would not allow such but with persistence and will everything's possible. There's nothing wrong with seeing African American interests we have seen how the Irish people in America suffered consistent discrimination how they've collected themselves to solve their community. In that view African Americans should work hard and serving their people like how black universities have South dedication and needs for African Americans.

I wonder if those can be just visited. I mean, as a citizen of a country that has little to no black citizens(never seen one), I really want to understand the culture. But I don't want to offend anyone in any way, so...
Why would a black student choose to go to an HBCU when the graduation rates on most HBCU are so low. Most important thing is graduation. The college you go to only matters if it's an IVY or top public. If you're not going to a high tier college you may as well go to one with a high graduation rate.
The graduate rate is low because a lot of the students are low income and college is expense. As a black student that don’t go to an HBCU, I will tell you why most want to go. When you are a black kid at a pwi, you’re the only minority in most of your classes, all your professors don’t look like you, you just have no connection to the school and to the people at the school. I’ve been going to predominately black school all my life until I got to college. That feeling of being around your own people is an excellent feeling.

I'm a black student and there are a few reasons to why I did not go to a HBCU. I'm gay and being gay in the black community is really looked down upon so that was one reason why. That's a huge reason why I didn't go. Even my mom didn't want me going to and HBCU because I'm gay. I know for sure I would of been messed with and I don't want that. I also grew up in Colorado. So it's not that I don't have pride in being black but black people from northern states are always told that “you sound white” when we visit the south or are around southern people. So that would of been an obstacle to over come. Why am I being teased around my own people for being gay, and from Colorado? It's sad that white people accept me more than my own people. I also didn't go because they're kind of expensive. Like she said in the video, yeah they're cheaper but students wind up taking out more loans. I'm comfortable at the school I attend and I feel safe.

Kamren Walker as a graduate of HBCU I respectfully disagree. Students who attend hbcus come from all walks of life and accepting of everyone. Now some hbcus are centered around the Southern Baptist Church because of how they were founded but you can say the same for a lot of PWI's. Never be afraid of your own people.

Kamren Walker maybe you should've visited an HBCU before you ran with those assumptions. I'm an HBCU grad and the gay community on campus had their own organizations, school sponsored support groups, and I can't recall any instances of violence towards the community. Many of them felt more comfortable being "out" on campus than they did when they went back home. Also, the northern vs. southern thing is literally nonexistent. Never heard of it, EVER. Northern students on the contrary felt more black community on campus and complained about their mostly white upbringing.
Glad you're happy at whatever PWI you decided to attend, but you should think twice before giving your opinion on HBCUs based on hearsay. Happens a lot amongst black people and too many students don't attend an HBCU for no good reason at all.

Response to Jamira Alexander - Hear, here. Those commenters , well, I'm a Christian, so let's move on, shall we? Historically and now, and regardless race, any student desirous of attending HBCUs who had/has the grades, could/can. However, White reciprocity is (largely) non-existent in everything, which is why Black colleges came into existence. Furthermore HBCUs hired folks from all over the world, many of whom for racial, ethnic and/or religious prejudice, couldn't get positions otherwise, despite eminent qualifications. And Black Americans with academic doctorates, and first-professional degrees, experienced virulent racial prejudice perpetrated by White educational institutions, businesses, professional and (most) governmental entities, which benefitted Black public high schools, and the U.S. Post Office, because a majority of the rest of these individuals were hired by them to teach/administer those schools, and sort and deliver the mail, respectively. Ask the commenters why they would think a place like Southern perpetuates segregation, why LSU has a $500M endowment compared to Southern A & M University's $13M, and why they're here talking a ton of CRAZY?
I don't know why it popped up in my suggested videos, as I am Russian and I have never been interested in getting a degree in America let alone HBCUs, but the whole concept seems interesting and very foreign. Also, I wish our campuses looked like that, because my uni's campus is far less green...

You have to feel included in an institution of higher learning? When are we gonna prioritize academic standards? Rigorous research? Citations? Mastery of a skill? This whole thing is about a division more than competition. PWI??? WHAT IS THE INSTITUTION DOING TO ADVANCE INDUSTRY STANDARDS IN A FAST PACED HIGHLY COMPLEX MARKET WHERE COMPETENCE IS THE PRIME COMMODITY??? Or is this a really expensive DEI club? Having gone to an HBCU, many of them won’t find a name in research or science; however, HBCUs have been able to take poor performing students, students from broken families, students from poverty, and give them the knowledge and skills to survive and thrive in mainstream America. I feel the true beauty of HBCUs is their commitment to the advancement of the Black race and indoctrinating those values of social responsibility into their students who in turn can create better communities. I know so many people who say going to this school saved me. It’s more than money or renown that these schools offer.

How so? First the schools were created because american universities and college denied access to blacks. 2nd whites have NEVER been denied access to HBCUs.
I wish they had separate Asian universities, and colleges like black universities so, East Asians can compete with the caucasian in the job marketplace, and be able to afford good grades to get that C.E.O. job, or corporate job position that pays well! The so called white man, and women favor their race at Stanford, Yale, Harvard, U.C.L.A., U.S.C., Cal State Fullerton, Cal State Long Beach and get good grades, why can't East Asians get straight A's in their college, and university classes, and have just East Asian instructors, and other Asian instructors, Asian classmates, and all Asian faculty, just like black colleges, and universities.

Black people are still being treated differently than white people. It is not the past, it is the present. Plus, denying the past does not fix or change anything. It just makes some people feel more comfortable because they feel like they don’t have to deal with biases and differences of opinions.
