Considering the fact you can buy a KDX for what a complete engine rebuild would cost on the CRF. I think the KDX takes the win. Yes, I'm a fan boy of the KDX. I own two.

I had a KDX 200 and raced the Texas Enduro circuit and hare scramble circuits in the mid 90's. Most reliable bike I ever owned, fun, not batshit crazy power, and light. I miss those days....
I’m just getting back into dirt biking this past year after being away from it for a long time. I’ve been mostly street riding/track days/road race schools for many years. Anyway, I found a brand new leftover 2017 CRF250X for sale at a dealership. I bought it on a whim thinking it would hold me over until I decided exactly what I was looking for. I must say I love this machine. It’s such a great all around bike. I’ve opened it up to let it breathe, installed lots of protective parts and it is great. I think I’ll be keeping it for awhile.
Honda four strokes are unmatched. A Crf250 is more than enough bike to have fun on. But the KDX is a sleeper. It’s almost as good as a four stroke MX 250, and it was developed at a time when MX was all two strokes. The KDX200 was/is a special bike. Affordable then, more affordable now, and they run like champs! That said, I love Honda four strokes! Your CRF will run and ride better, and be a fun freekin machine! 👍
Pretty much the results I'd expect given the huge difference in technology between the two bikes. Definitely a great video comparison, glad the KDX held up so well.
Not bad for early 90's technology. I only wish Kawasaki would have developed one more generation with frame and suspension and brakes from the 2000 gen kx 125.
I also own 3 KDX's and cry 450. The Hondas are more refined, slightly better suspended and definitely make use of the 4 stroke traction advantage. But if you're play riding like I do, neither bike has much of a performance advantage. The KDX has a bit more confident engine feel for me. The CRF is like riding on air, great suspension. They're both awesome!
Great video, keep them coming. Bought my 1st White 1988 KDX 200 new and I still ride it, it's even plated. Best bike I've ever owned. Have 2 Green 88 200s and I just picked up a 1 owner with title[ so I can plate it.] 2006 KDX 200 in almost mint cond. for $1200.00. Ride safe my 2 wheel friends.
Now take both bikes to the east coast and do some woods riding comparisons. Considering the KDX was designed for the tight stuff I think it held its own.
Really pretty sad that the Honda didn’t just blow the kdx out , being the Honda had a cam mod and the last time the kdx had any kind of a update was in 1995
I have a 02 kdx220 and a 04 crf250x and they both handle great in the tight woods. Top end on the Kawasaki is great but it doesn’t compare in low end to the Honda, naturally. I wouldn’t say one is better than the other, so much as they are both great for what they were designed for. Both are reliable bikes.
Now you gotta race MY KDX200 vs the 250x, I have kx sus. FMF gnarly with turbine core 2, opened air box, different jetting, and boyesen power reeds. If I didn’t live in PA if definetly let you rail my bike...
I love my KDX. Everytime I think about getting a new tech dirtbike i just go ride Jolly Green and the thoughts are gone. It's such a good reliable trail bike.
Really great side by side comparison! I like it when you' do this type of comparison with the split screen and elapsed times. Anyway, the KDX of course is really a woods bike, single track, trail bike. I'm honestly very surprised it did as well as it did out in the wide open desert terrain. But then again, your XR250 is also a tight woods type bike, but it seems to do well in the open country also.
No kidding. Cheapest I can find around here with a title is 3000. But it's mint, almost a shame to trash it off-road. The only other one is a clapped out 89 no title for 1500
I've owned and loved both (more than 1 of each, actually). Tough call. I'm east coast with easterly coast style trails (no desert in TN that I know of :-p )...STILL a tough call for me personally,LOL! I can say that I'd much prefer another KDX when it's time for a rebuild though....last time I rebuilt one it was a couple hundred bucks,I rebuilt my second CRF250X with a mild cam upgrade, was around $1,600 (same shop, same rates for labor). BUT,I made street legal and plated my last CRF250X,can't do that (as far as I know) a KDX where I live. Too tough to call for me,LOL,I did love both. Enjoyed the video, thanks for the sleepless nights ahead mulling this over (sarcasm sign :-p ) :-D
I have had many different bikes in all my years of riding so I can only tell you what I've experienced. From what I know is that the KDX 200 is a fun bike, you can enjoy a good long ride with out any worries of maintenance issues and its cheap. It is also just enough to get the job done for me and at my age I'm not going to be winning any enduro competitions anyway. So yes the KDX is an all time favorite for me.
I owned both for a couple of years. Eastern woods and western mountain riding. Sold the CRX and bought a Jeff Fredette KDX. Honda was a nightmare to work on. KDX is simple.
That KDX was hauling. I understand your biggest critique of the KDX was the suspension, so I’d love to see a retest with revalved suspension and a FWW so make up for some of less than linear powerband. Times aside, I know that 2 stroke is gonna put a bigger smile on my face.
This was really helpful as I’ve needed a bigger bike for awhile now and I narrowed it down to these to bikes but for the price of the kdx definetly takes the w in my books
I've got an 01 KDX with a few modifications, including full KX suspension upgrade. I'd be curious to see what a race with a more level playing field would look like.

I’m not knocking CRF250s, but I can say as an owner of an 89 KDX200, it’s a much better value than the CRF. My son learned to ride on a klx125, then the KDX, and now rides a 2001 CR250R. We love Kawas and Hondas, but we really love two strokes! Four strokes are great, but two strokes are far more cost efficient than four strokes, way easier to rebuild, and have a higher power to rate ratio than four strokes, assuming identical frames. Two strokes are harder to manage in the beginning, but deliver the goods when you learn how to ride them. Anyone who learns how to ride a two stroke, will easily learn how to ride a four stroke. Going the opposite way, riders who learned on four strokes will have a learning curve, getting accustomed to the narrower power band. Fortunately, my son had the KDX to get his two stroke chops. It’s a smooth riding two stroke!, but still has the two stroke kick to it. My son’s best friend just bought a KX250F. It’ll be interesting to see how it does against a CR250R.
CRF250X now (nov, 2018) available for less money than KDX200. I just bought one for $1200 in average running condition. KDX not available at such a price. Used to have a KDX, but find the CRF easier to ride. Just like the video shows - even steven performance …. even though the KDX weighs 20-30 pounds less. Don't get me wrong - liked my KDX.
hi Jim love what your doing, ridden most of what you have ,except for the Honda xr250 so bought one after watching your video,,,, love it, just going to fit progressive springs and then have a play with the rear shock, the kdx well it's an enduro elf, for some reason the E3 early 90s 200 was the best,,,, don't know why must have had magic fairy dust on it. I think you find a nice Alfer vr 250 to try or an Atk 250 2t rotax keep it up😉
The KDX is a great bike. I bought one in 95’ to race hare scrambles in district 7. It was better to destroy the kdx than my MX bikes. Even when I submerged it crossing a river, it fired up with a new plug and on my way. I think they can be street legal here in AZ, and I plan to get a new one once the hypothetical virus goes away.
Fun factor can't be beat...and to be honest, the KDX shines best as an East Coast Woods bike. Not many CRF 250's around me...I am usually- not kidding here, passing Gas Gas, Beta's and KTM's all day long. No joke. But I get passed as well...but this ol bike CAN hang with the bid DAWGS! At my club I keep up with a CRF450. I don't pass it, but can keep up.
The KDX is the one that would finnish an actual enduro race. It is simply impossible to break. After 15 years of riding and racing mine, I only had flat rires and chain snaps.
Never thought of a kdx as a desert racer, heck it is really soft suspension wise for 165 lbs east coast xc racing , but throw in some ugly single track between the trees and a kdx220 with slight mods is a price point and reliability champion.
Crf has better outta box suspension bringing the kdx up up in that dept alone with emulators or a fork swap and possibly a stiffer spring in rear and it may well eat the crf for breakfast. Every negative thing said about the kdx in this video. Could have been avoided or over come with ssupension. Jmo but they so close now with the crf havin the advantage of newer tech. Go with the kdx with a proper suspension setup hands down the better bike.
My dad ran the Kdx 200 and I have a crf250x. They are both great bikes but I still prefer my crf250x. I love everything about it except shimming the valves
Good comparison...so now here is the edge that will win for the KDX. Do a 220 with FRP mods. (bored carb, milled head, polished and ported cylinder, Race tech Gold seals up front with stiffer springs, re-valved shock in rear, and east coast tight woods), no way will that more expensive CRF stay with her. No Gas Gas, Beta, or KTM will make the 220 R look and feel like a 20 year old bike.
Yeah that would push the KDX out of this territory If you enjoy the content please check out my "best ways to support" page on my website which shows how to support the channel for free! Thanks! torturetestmagazine.com/pages/best-ways-to-support-ttm-some-are-free
@@macunion1225 I can speak on that. I own a 1990 KDX200E and also a 2008 crf150f. From what I heard the 150 and the 230 are pretty similar, the 230 might have a little more low end and maybe 2-3 mph better top speed.
@@ThatMotorsportGuy ive just found out the crf230f is severely restricted from the factory , i just derestricted mine and the main jet had to go from 102 to 120 nd now it whellies off the throttle so i completely believe that 150 was close to 230 , as far as comparing a KDX still no chance as i found out
Would be interesting if they were both stock bikes... or perhaps just a pipe change for each. When you start modding it's hard to keep both equal especially since you have a 4 stroke against a 2 stroke.
i wonder how much difference there'd be in the eastern Appalachian mtns where i live. it might be a different ball game. love the x don't get me wrong but the kdx shine in the terrain here
Good stuff bud, not sure it’s what I was hoping for but definitely good stuff. I think a side by side of the E andH series would be tits. I got an E series myself any guesses as to what I’d be hoping for.
Just dreaming here, but the only bike upgrade I really want from my excellent condition 01 kdx 220 is my kdx engine in a street legal trail tuned kdx 125 chassis from around the same era.
Bring them both to Kodiak and try snotty rocks with very little dirt underneath. I promise you won’t have to tell the viewers when it’s uphill🤣I’ll take, and I did, the KDX all day long.
Your also comparing a modern motocross bike to a 20 something year old trail bike design...the kdx is a better all arounder especially with a 6 speed transmission and a suspension that won't beat you up if you ride all day
exelent!!! i wish to ride bouth jajaj but i htink that prefere the crf 250x but what abuth deep sand and dunes? or mudi conditions? awesome vide thaks for share
Help... Considering one of these two bikes here. I currently ride a crf450r, but my son (9yrs old) just began riding with me and the 450r is just too much bike to lug around while he is learning. We will be riding single track trails type on soft terrain in Florida. Will need something reliable going slow and need torque for sand. I have ridden a 250x and like the low 1st gear, electric start is a plus but I know a 200 2t is easy to start and jetted right wont foul plugs. Plus the 200 costs less and if it ever needs a rebuild I can tackle that in a couple hour for pennies compared to the crf. Resale is probably no big deal, both bikes have probably depreciated to the max by now. Torture Test Magazine, which one would you recommend?
If I were just having a good time enjoying the Earth's terrain, the KDX is probably my all time favorite bike to ride so far. It's also practically maintenance-free. But for most of the racing that I do, I prefer the CRF250X. The CRF doesn't feel out of place when the race course includes a man-made motocross track or lots of whoops. The electric start is pretty much a non-factor when comparing the two in this case, because the KDX starts if you practically just look at the kicker! And I am not a fan of kicking at all, so the fact that it doesn't bother me on the KDX at all means it really is that easy!
@@TortureTestMagazine thats great thanks, I'm just following my son as he is learning so I have felt the kdx is probably the best for what I'm going to do with it.

Yeah that would push the KDX out of this territory

I have both bikes a 1996 kdx200 and a 2009 crf250x I like the crf more even though I haven’t ridden the kdx that much
I'd rather have the kdx 220r vs the 200
Pretty cool video.!💪💪 I think you’re riding the KDX more like u ride the CRF. You gotta stay up in the rpms and let her eat! Thanks for the footage🤙🤙🤙
But, which one was more fun to ride?
I'd say I have more fun on the KDX
Had a 1989 kdx200, used it for both commuting and even raced it in enduro. To this day I still don't know why I sold it
Excellent video mate
do another video on the ttr 125 and do more upgrades to it, like a lighter fly wheel etc
CRF250X vs. KDX vs. CRF230F is what I'd like to see.
can already tell you the crf230f has no chance , not even close, not that the crf230 isnt awesome
@@macunion1225 I can speak on that. I own a 1990 KDX200E and also a 2008 crf150f. From what I heard the 150 and the 230 are pretty similar, the 230 might have a little more low end and maybe 2-3 mph better top speed.
@@ThatMotorsportGuy ive just found out the crf230f is severely restricted from the factory , i just derestricted mine and the main jet had to go from 102 to 120 nd now it whellies off the throttle so i completely believe that 150 was close to 230 , as far as comparing a KDX still no chance as i found out
Amazing video man dont know if I want the 250x engine problems but is a beast.
They’re very reliable engines
Make that same test where I ride (rocky tight eastern woods) the KDX would run circles around the Honda, no contest.
Great comparison,
Would be interesting if they were both stock bikes... or perhaps just a pipe change for each. When you start modding it's hard to keep both equal especially since you have a 4 stroke against a 2 stroke.
KDX is the best(because I own one is why 🤣🤣)
I Love my PRO CIRCUIT 2006 KDX-200!!!!!!
Great video! But I thought the KDX would have won doesn’t the kdx put out more HP?
i wonder how much difference there'd be in the eastern Appalachian mtns where i live. it might be a different ball game. love the x don't get me wrong but the kdx shine in the terrain here
kdx is a much better bike. the kdx will also be running after 100 hours on the engine.
But which was more fun? :)
Bring them both to Kodiak and try snotty rocks with very little dirt underneath. I promise you won’t have to tell the viewers when it’s uphill🤣I’ll take, and I did, the KDX all day long.
I had a 2006 KDX. I sold it...what a mistake. Bummer
I just bought a 1 owner 2006 KDX 200 and have 3 1988 KDX 200s.
What premix and ratio do you run in the kdx?
I use 50:1 with amsoil interceptor
I thought the kdx would win! I'm definitely surprised.
Stick a pipe on the KDX jet it and maybe that'll make up the difference, it's very easy to make nice power gains on 2 strokes
This is so awesome with the 2 side by side!! Thanks a lot it had me grinning the whole time lol
The 250x had a cam mod. KDX was stock except exhaust.
I bought a beta 200rr cause I missed the old kdx.
Do a kdx vs crf230
Year bro my son & i have a kdx each and they rock
I love my KDX but I just rode a friend's new YZ250F and the KDX isn't in the same league.
2 smoke > 4 for this guy. I find them more entertaining to ride. They seem to have more personality. Plus WAY cheaper to maintain.
The KDX looks better, sounds better and is more fun. That’s the win for me!
@@TortureTestMagazine thats great thanks, I'm just following my son as he is learning so I have felt the kdx is probably the best for what I'm going to do with it.
great video as usual
Two strokes all day, unless it’s like a 600 Thumper with a Supertrapp.
Then it’s a hard decision for me.
Ported and piped KDX.......stand back 250F !
2 strokes is insane
What happened to the 230?
