Reporter: "After the Olympic season in 2010 he had, at age 24, won everything one could win - gold in the world championship and the olympics, both individually and in the relay, and also the overall world cup title. He describes a feeling of emptiness that emerged - "what do I do now?" But then his vision on training was brought to a head when his three-year younger team mate Tarjei Bø, ruthlessly stepped into the arena, and won the overall world cup title last season 5 points ahead of Emil."

Emil: "I've always been like that. When I'm training I'm really training and almost not talking to anyone, my focus is completely on that. Then after training I don't talk about it, and I'm just having fun really."
Reporter: "So what's the plan now? You have to take back the throne!"
Emil: "Yeah, that was real bitter, those five points last year.. I've thought a lot about them."
    Reporter: "You have?"

    Part 1.
    01:09
Reporter: "The Norwegian town of Lillehammer. Here live some of the best biathletes in the world right now."
    Emil: "It's a nice day."
Reporter: "And we're meeting up with a pretty laid-back Emil Hegle Svendsen. It's the month of October, that time of year when life consist only of training, eating and sleeping, and we just have to live with that when we're dropping in for a visit."
    Emil: "Yeah.."
Reporter: "Just another day at work."
Emil: "Yeah, it is. You want a ride?"

Emil: "Last year I worked on being a bit faster in the shooting, and that influenced the basic training. I didn't do as much basic training on the shooting, and then in the winter it came back to bite me in the ass. I didn't really have any good feeling on the standing shooting all year. There were loads of "almosts" all the time where I missed once on every shooting, so I've spent a lot of time in the summer working on my standing shooting to make it perfect."

    20.
Coach:" *laughs* Well, not slower than last year, at least, and on par with the best cross-country skiers."
Coach: "Four low ones." (discussing the shooting)
    Emil: "I don't understand it."
    15.12
Emil: "What do you think, Lotta? I did poorly in the shooting because you were here, to get their hopes up. Then I'll come to the world cup and be totally outstanding, that's the plan."
    Guy holding bottle: "Green tea."
Swedish guy: "Is that the secret?"

    16.
Reporter: "Can you describe the difference when it's not working and when it's working?"
Emil: "Well, when it's working you don't think, you just stand there and shoot. When you're having a hard time you start thinking and that ruins it for you. You can't find the flow because your thoughts are, in a way, standing in the way of what's normally automatic. Every shot is a fight, and then it's very difficult to do it well."

    Part 4.
Reporter: "These test runs you're doing, how important are they?"
Emil: "They're the most important things we do. Tomorrow is so important that I'm going to be really nervous, and now is the last test run before we're going up in the heights so then it's really important to do well and that everything comes together as it should, so tomorrow's really important."

Reporter (cont.)..."Bø's way of training made Emil push the boundaries"
Emil: "Many people said that he trained with his head under his arm." (that he didn't think things through)
    Reporter: "But were you surprised?"
Emil: "Yeah, I was surprised. I didn't think it was possible to do things the way he was doing it for several months. To go from being a junior to train over 100 hours a month and be able to sustain that, I didn't think that was possible, but when I saw that you could do that..."

Reporter (cont.)..."It's scary having him behind you on the last lap."
(And then you hear Swedish commentators commenting on Emil being "irresistible" and "relentless" among other things, they're generally impressed)
    05:52
Reporter: "And there we're suddenly interrupted by a traffic warden."
Guy: "Yeah, Emil and I got a parking ticket."
    Reporter: "Nooo?"
    Guy: "Yes!"
    Emil: "No.. Fuck."
Swedish guy: "As we say in Sweden: it'll cost you to be on top!"

    Part 3.
Reporter: "But it's been working out for you?"
Emil: "Yeah, it feels good. So far... There are many who are feeling good at this time of year and then it just goes to hell, so I've got to wait another month and see if it still feels good... If you hit a bump it's usually at this time of year, so you need to watch out and don't get too eager. When you start getting into shape it's easy to overdo it and then it goes the other way instead."

Emil: "Yes, it doesn't matter if you have an olympic or a world championship gold in Norway... How much was it? Did you check it?"
    Reporter: "No, I didn't."
Emil: "700 crowns! Norwegian crowns. That's a lot!"
Reporter:" Yeah, that is a lot!"
    Emil: "You're taking it." *smiles*:
    Reporter: "Yeah, right!"
    Emil: "That was expensive training."
    06:45
Reporter: "You eat a lot don't you?"
    Emil: "Yeah... Spinach, that's..."
    Reporter:.."green."
    Emil: "There! There's spinach!"

    Part 2.
Reporter: "It's the day before one of the test-runs of the season that will hopefully give an indication that the shape is going in the right direction."
Emil: "I'm feeling stronger than ever physically, in total I've been training 10 to 20 percent more, and been trying to do more hard training..."
    Reporter: "But that's a lot.. I mean, 20 percent that's a big increase."
    Emil: "Yeah it is, but..."

Emil: "I had to pay today!"
Swedish guy: "You had to pay..?"
Emil: "For the parking. I don't want to get a fine two days in a row."
    Reporter:" Excited?"
Emil: "Yeah. And a bit nervous. But I'm good. It's gonna be fun."
Reporter: "Did you sleep well last night?"
    Emil: "Yeah, I did."
Reporter: "A test run in competitive speed. A mass start with three people and while the coach is conctructing an own-made penalty loop with what he can find, the guys are shooting."

    19.
Coach: "It depends on the last shooting. We'll see who's got the toughest mind."
Reporter: "No, it's not Emil's day on the shooting range. Another miss, and the result is a 12-second victory for Lars Berger."
Coach: "The first two shootings are too poor but it got better - the finish was good, and both of them were strong in the track. I've got some race times from before and I can say that they were fast.
Reporter: "How fast? Do we need to look out?"

  • @Isblis150
    @Isblis150 11 лет назад +1

    21.
Emil: "Yeah, the secret behind poor shooting is green tea. *drinks* Oh, fuck. That's the punishment. The punishment for bad shooting. It felt like it was an improvement from last year. I think I'm faster, and I'm happy with my shape. It wasn't all black."
Reporter: "And yet another work out session is done. The positive results are mixed with some question marks that will hopefully be solved when he leaves Lillehammer for the big world cup circus, and the pursuit to take back the title."

    7.
Emil (cont.):..."I tried doing the same, and both of us did it better last year, but he was even better and just went straight in and.. was maybe the best biathlete last year."
Reporter: "Emil won a third of all of the races he did last year - 8 victories out of 24 races, no one was even close to that. The coach of the national team says that there is even more to get, the engine can be even better. That's maybe not what you want to hear when you're Swedish (it's a swedish reporter)..."

    06:59
Reporter: "You.. We've forgotten the main..."
    Emil: "Ingredient."
    Reporter: "Yes. The carbohydrates."
Emil: *laughs* "Yes, that is important! I'm doing a hard race tomorrow, I need something to run on."
    (in the kitchen)
Emil: "Many people believe that I'm totally unserious..."
    Reporter: "Really?"
Emil: "Yes, many think so, 'cause when I'm not training or competing I'm very laid back and many think that I'm a slob and that I'm not doing anything..."

    07:13
Emil: "Do we have any earplugs?"
Reporter: "The double swedish bronze medalist from the 1992 olympics, Micke Lövgren, is responsible for the shooting training. And there are some things to work on. And while the physical part is better than ever, Emil is not really happy with the shooting. Last year he didn't manage to shoot four zeros once during competition and it's still not good. The head is working when he shoots 250 shots during training."

Reporter (cont.): "Tarjei has a cold, so he'll pass today's race. It will first and foremost stand between Emil and Lars Berger."
    13:25
"Not good starting out missing two in the first shooting, here in the second... Another two missed targets. A little improvement in the first standing shooting - one miss and a small lead."
Coach: "Emil has a five second lead on Lars on the forth round."
    Reporter: "Will that be enough?"

Emil: "Yeah, I want to take it back. Five points, that was... And that's what people are talking about as well when they're talking about last season.. And they're saying that Tarjei was the best, and I'm like: "Well, I won more races than him and I was only five points behind. I was there too!" *laughs* But people only talk about what he did, and that's cool. It was the first season he did well."

Emil (cont.): "I think I'm perceived as a laid back guy."
Reporter: "But it seems like you're... I've followed you a little during competitions, not like this, and it seems like you're very concentrated when you're training.. One does not want to disturb you."
Emil: "No, that's also a thing about me, that I'm a "on-and-off" person. I turn it on during training and competition and then I'm totally on."
Reporter: "Has it always been like that, or have you learned it more and more?"
