SNL really needs to fix the audio mixing their voices are overshadowed by the music
fr!!! like why is Lucy so quiet did they not even try to turn her mic up?
Horrible audio production!
which actually makes it closer to how it would sound irl because the intruments always overpower in live music.
@@closebenI went to their concert earlier this year and I agree with op, you could hear their voices better
Second video of this band I've seen with a terrible mix. Wonder if they use their own engineer for these performances and they just suck.
Lucy quietly being the secret weapon. Whenever she comes in things just get emotionally elevated.
I love Lucy so much. So underrated.
Phoebe can't keep the smile off her face. This is so awesome to see on TV.
cant keep the frown off my face after listening to that atrocity
@@user-si6ce1fd6x you’re a bundle of joy aren’t you
The drummer killed it!! Soo good, this song is an absolute banger
Who is the drummer?
Drums are mixed extremely well too, they sound massive

Julien’s half smile, half snarl before joining in “always an angel, never a god” is everything, like she knows something amazing is about to happen that you don’t know yet but are about to find out. Whoever was in charge of picking the camera feeds needs a raise.
Hmm.. Looked like a ghoul to me. Did you see where her face changed shape further along in the song. I loved their music and this song, but the more I read about them, the more they seem demonic. This performance pretty much confirmed it for me. Then to see they wrote a song called Satanist...they sold their souls.
I know everyone is all over Phoebe Bridgers and anything she touches, but Julien Baker is a goddess of talent.
Julien is criminally underrated; from her guitar playing to how she conveys the emotion while singing, she's amazing.
Her solo stuff is really solid.
They all bring something a little different to the table, but IMO, Lucy has the best voice, Julien is the best lyricist (though Lucy isn't far behind) and the the best instrumentalist (not just guitar but anything she touches, but especially on guitar) and Phoebe, is the best arranger/compositionist (is compositionist even a word? probably not).
I'm basing this actually on their solo work as it's impossible to separate the songs they sing together. But I'd like to say all of them are extremely talented across the board.
Abso-fucking-lutely
They are all fantastic but that drummer is FIRE.
The little guitar riff Julien does after "canyon" kills me every time.
That moment when Lucy starts on "Always an angel" in that voice like spiked warm chocolate is sublime.
Julian’s riff OMG yes!
Madden Klass is the drummer. Absolutely one of the greatest percussionists performing today!
@@OboeCanAm im sorry but thats an absurd statement
Was that Keith Moon's daughter up there? Perfect beat, perfect timing. She stayed within the song but you can't deny those rapid fills and power. Those three are awesome, beautiful unaffected voices, just a killer song to play to. It took seven talented people on that stage to rock so hard. Who really killed on the SNL stage? Bruno Mars, Bad Bunny, Greta Van Fleet, BTS, and now Boygenius.
I live for that riff. so good!
The whole band has their strengths, but damn, does Julien deserve more love. Underrated guitar player and you could watch them play on mute and you would know exactly what the mood/feel of the song is and when it hits the emotional high/low points just by watching Julien. So damn good.
Her solo album is so good.
So happy to have seen her back in 2017 in my hometown at a small venue. Such an intimate performance and she is such a skilled musician ❤
I got so teary watching this. Growing up in the 2000's there was so rarely this kind of mainstream representation of queer women joyfully, unabashedly railing on guitars, slamming drums, feeling all their feelings and having it be a superpower not a hinderance. Their performance was entirely for them, no hint of deference to the male gaze. Feels amazing to witness.
👏👏👏
The drummer needs to be a canon member of the group.
The song is great but the drumming in this live set is spectacular.
Why don't you share your money with the drummer.
idk what it is but every time i watch a performance of this song julien's last "always an angel never a god" brings me to tears
me too!!!! so beautiful.
I hope Julien doesn't stop doing solo work. She's amazing
hope she stops now because that was awful
@@user-si6ce1fd6xi hope you stop making hateful comments for no reason
Phoebe still playing in open D tuning (or open Db in this case), all is well in this timeline
here are the chord shapes she's playing, tuning is Db, Ab, Db, F, Ab, Db
verse:
Db = 050000
Ab = 770000
Ebm = 220000
Bbm = 990000
chorus:
Gb = 550000
Db = 050000
Ab = 770000
Ebm = 220000
bridge:
Db = 050000
Gb = 550000
repeat until
Gbm = 550000
So like, these might seem like weirdly simple shapes, and they absolutely are. What's going on here music theory-wise is that Phoebe's guitar part creates a harmonic drone, colouring every other chord in the song with a Db major triad on top. It can be kinda soupy, kinda grungy, or straight up heavenly, luscious, etc. depending on the context.
If we do the theory and write in what these chords *literally* are, we get this:
verse:
Db, Ab6add4no3, Ebm7add2add4no3, Bbm7
chorus:
Gbmaj9no3, Db, Ab6add4no3, Ebm7add2add4no3
So like, when we write it like this, it looks a lot more complicated than it actually is. What is moreso happening, is that it's like if Phoebe was playing the part on piano, with the left hand playing a root-fifth voicing of the underlying chord (so like, for Ab that would be Ab and Eb), but also always droning on a D major triad in the right hand. If you have access to a piano and want to hear what i mean, try playing C-E-G in the right hand and a low C with the left, then switch that low C to an F. Hear how the bass completely changes the musical meaning of the chord even though you're still playing a C chord in the right hand? That's the fundamental way these shapes work on guitar.
Oh also, the pretty chord at the end of the bridge (the climax of the "always an angel never a god" part is a Gbm, but I'm 90% sure Phoebe is still just playing the same Gb voicing in that part since it doesn't contain a major third anyway.
Anyway, musically Phoebe's part serves so thicken up the mix, and add extra colour tones to all of the underlying chords with that Dbmaj triad drone. Between the other 2 guitars, keyboard, and 2 (?) bass guitars (seriously i dont know why there are 2 bass guitars, i think it's a bit maybe?) which are playing the actual chord tones, the underlying chords tones are plenty represented in the mix.
If you want to experiment with this tuning, I'll recommend some chord shapes to use to play this song to get you started.
Db:
050000 is fine, but you could also try 004200, or, hilariously, 000000 xD
Ab: 77x700 this is the main shape I'll be recommending. the "x" means that you mute that string by maintaining contact with it using an adjacent finger without actually pressing it onto a fret. it contains the major third, and omits the lower register tonic drone and the mid register major third drone in order to un-muddy the sound a bit, while still maintaining the colourful 5-1 sparkle on top.
Ebm: 22x100 same basic shape as before, but with a minor third instead of a major third. You will need to swap some fingers around when switching between the major and minor shapes, but once you commit them to muscle memory, they are incredibly comfortable shapes to play.
Bbm: same as Ebm but on the 9th fret, etc. if you've made it this far you can most likely extrapolate the others on your own
If you're reading this, you are severely dehydrated and you need to drink some water right now.
me sitting on my couch procrastinating my music theory homework for the music school that phoebe dropped out of:
Thanks for taking the time and writing this all up! I'm looking forward to practicing this on my guitar today :)
Wow cool! Um... how did you know about the dehydration?
@@fazsicle i am in your walls
This is hands down one of the most insightful, thoughtful, helpful comments I’ve seen in all of RUclips. I’ve always wondered what tuning Phoebe played in and how it affected things. Gonna go try this later today!
Everyone was amazing, but that drummer is on some next level. Absolutely tight AF
How wonderful to stumble upon this crew in my Sunday morning SNL viewing. They had me at the black hole in the kitchen! My listening for the day has been determined! Genius indeed.
hell yea kevin
same here, something about the band just did it for me
For sure! I saw boygenius first on CBS Sunday morning and was blown away! It is also on RUclips
how awful to stumble upon this awful crew
Also, notice the 2nd verse were they reference The Cure's hit from the early 80's!
Julien literally was born to be a rockstar. The guitar playing, the stage presence, the voice, the music writing, the look, the dancing.
THEIR BIG OL SMILES AT THE END, oh my heart I’m so fuckin proud of the boys
One of the best SNL performances EVER!! (I’ve been watching since 1975)
Worst since Lana
hahaha
more like worst. METALLICA RULES!!
I bet you liked the Lana performance too
OMG this gives me so much joy. I cry every time I hear this song, their harmonies are absolutely sublime but now seeing everyone bounce around enjoying themselves so much, that drumming, the bass that sounds like The Cure just after 'listening to boys don't cry.... ' Lucy's smooth beautiful voice, all of it is everything. breathtaking. thank you boygenius.
gives me so much hate i cry tears of anger at how bad the harmonies are and i bounce with rage
@@user-si6ce1fd6x 🤣🤣🤣
Just a superb performance and a very clever nod to The Beatles' first appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show (Feb. 9, 1964). They're wearing the matching suits and Beatle boots, and SNL copied the stage set from that memorable Sunday night. Capitol Records used a photo of the band on the Sullivan show for the cover of their album, "Something New," released in July of 1964.
Drum font, too.
they all look so happy, im in tears.
Can't get enough of this song! And oh man that drummer....so good!

I think the 4 backing musicians should continue on as a band. So much energy!

They are just so good and are actually improving every time I see them. Live and in broadcast scenarios like this one. A supergroup of huge proportions here. Amazing.
so bad and getting worse every time. what a stupiddgroup
The drummer rocks! Luv the homage to the Beatles ❤
Yes, the stage is a really accurate copy of the Beatles' stage when they first appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show in February 1964. Such a cool idea.

the boyyys 🖤 and that DRUMMER!! 🙌🏾
Madden Klass 🥁 is excellent
Reminds me of 90s indy rock - blends between the Cardigans and the Cranberries
Agree, add in some of The Sundays too. Anyway, it's a sound I'm happy is back. Sincerely, A Gen Xer.
Full body goosebumps - and damn Lucy is just MAGICAL
THEIR JUMPS AWWW
THE BOYS HAVE SUCH A GOOD DRUMMER
I wonder who it is? My fav female drummer is Amy Woods, who worked on the Grammy winning album of Fiona Apple
Great lyrics, awesome vocal harmonies, jangly ambient guitars and a solid backing band! Love the tune and love this performance!
Everything about this is amazing! Everyone’s vocals and playing were so great! SNL is a life achievement! Good job 💖
I love Julian Baker so much!! So glad Boy Genius is getting attention 😊
I'm so proud of Boygenius!!!! You guys deserve everything! the record best album of the year. I love The Beatles reference omg they're my favorite band ❤❤❤

This is great. Makes me smile. Feels like the build up seeing them in concert. A+, er, I mean #1
I watched snl just because I knew you guys were gonna be performing. I couldn’t be more proud. We love you. ❤️❤️❤️
Always love the music that SNL books during sweeps and boygenius is a special one. I am sure the support staff and interns really enjoyed this past production week.

THE DRUMMERRR 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Just amazing!!!!
absolute FIRE. Looooove the subtle 90's feel of it
Killing it as always. Love them!
I love the energy! This was so much fun to watch!!
Stumbled on this band. I was a huge fan of punk, post-punk, Goth, and Emo. When I heard this song, I was blown away. They sent me into a rabbit hole of Indie. I'm still lost, finding so many bands, so many songs, so many stories being told, and even more still being written.
you guys played my two favorite songs !! thank you ❤
ainda bem que esse trio não foi só uma fase 🙏
I love them so much- So amazing to see MORE people digging their tunes!
this is everything to me
on 1/1/30 this will officially be the song of the decade
Still the song of the year!!

They did such an amazing time! So exciting to see them get the recognition!!
So happy for Phoebe, she opened for me once when she was starting out. Her solo stuff is amazing

I've been following each of you individually over the years. Truly one of the great supergroups of 2023. Congrats y'all!
Wow, what an awesome performance - just love this group! And love the fact that they obviously enjoy and are really into the music.

Congratulations Boygenius! You rock!!
So glad they're getting this recognition... well deserved!💜
Such a great performance.
The joy on Phoebe’s face is surpassed only by that on the bass player’s face (the bass player also slaps, BTW)
What got me into boygenius was discovering Lucy Dacus. I missed watching this back in December as I was about to go on holiday but been meaning to watch it since and damn they were on fire. I’m also gutted I missed them live in a town very close to me only to go on holiday! Can’t believe now they’re on a hiatus.
I love this song. It's absolutely brilliant!!!
First rate rhythm section; two interlocking basses? And that drummer setting that pace on fire. Bloody brilliant
the sound is imaculate
I love how they show they're so grateful to be making music together and enjoy it like, you can really feel the love they put into it. So proud of the boys 💞
Love this my friends! Thanks for everything!
