Doing the math, if you have 1/4 inch lead tape, 1 gram per 4 inches of tape. 2 strips of tape evenly at 12, 9 and 3 o'clock totaling 6 strips. It is 6 strips cut at 2 2/3 inches each that = 4 grams of weight added. If you don't like it just peel off the tape...no harm, no foul. Have fun experimenting!
I customized my 2021 Vcore 95 with leather grip + overgrip and tried 3g each at 3/9 and 3g each at 10/2 - I settled with the 10/2 + leather grip combo as my go to stick for competitive play
I do basically the same customisation on my EZone 98's, and find the same results - better plow through, better control, and it's nice and stable. It also deadened some of the harsher vibrations when I mishit near the hoop, so added bonus there.
One nice little tip to try out minor mods - weigh your dampeners and place them approx where you would put your lead; a 4 oz dampener placed at 12:00 has a noticeable effect, and placing them around the head can help dial things in quickly!
Typical overgrips are 6g installed, unless you go for a very thin one like Wilson Pro Sensation. But the balance won't change much in your customization because the overgrip's centre of mass is 10 cm up the handle and hence closer to the balance point than the 4g lead at the tip. All good there. 4g lead at the tip will add about 10-12 points to the swing-weight. The result is a more polarized racket which will feel more powerful, but the twistweight will not have changed. Alternatively, putting 4g at 9 & 3 will result in a similar increase in SW whilst maintaining the balance, but the racket will be less polarized and should feel more stable. Many options are available, and the best idea is to establish what you consider to be lacking in the racket to start with. It should also be noted that adding an overgrip changes the muscle control sensations in your hand slightly and the feel of the bevels.
I think 4g of lead at 12 is excessive for most recreational players, as it does add 12 pts of SW, which will bring it around 330. Advanced players will handle that SW easily, but not intermediate players. Also, putting 4g of lead at 3 and 9 will only add about 6 pts of SW, which is probably more reasonable for most people. With lead, one should proceed carefully and incrementally.
I have a vcore 95 weighted up with a leather grip and over grip and 3 grams each side at 3 and 9 and it plays way better than the stock version. Feel like it gets pushed around by the bigger hitters without the mods, especially in doubles!
My friend and I both customized our 21 Vcore 98. We put 4” lead tape on 3&9. Then counter balanced by adding 2 dimes in the butt cap. The stick hits great now. Prior to this, I felt like something was missing.
Just for my understanding - did you put 4grams in total just to the top or did you put it on top and in addition to 9&3 to make it all together 4g? Want to try it as well :-)
Can you do a comparison with this VCORE 95 with the current G360+ Prestige and your opinions on them compared to each other? IMO I think they’re both player’s racquets. I like them both but I’m torn between the two. Thanks!
Uh, all you gotta do is measure the lead tape, depending if it’s 1/4 inch or 1/2 lead tape, and you’ll know exactly how much weight you’re adding. You don’t need to count grommets.
I have tried many customizstions and settled similarly with 2gr at 12 and 3gr total at 3&9 .. also putting 1 gr at 6 makes slices better.. also tried with 10grams to handle (or leathergrip) , played even better but became too heavy for longer periods (355grams)... would really appreciate some measurements with the above setup, swingweight should be around 335 I guess.. thx
I'm really not surprised some extra weight makes the racket better. Strongly believe manufacturers make rackets way too light to appeal to wider market. Most people can handle heavier rackets and should try adding some weight. Makes no sense to me seeing 200 pounders hitting with a 300-gram racket.
Harry, could you please measure weight and swingweight ? I am curious to know how close it would be to the ezone 98 Tour which the coaches loved too. Thanks !
Great video and advice. I purchased the new VCore 98 in a 1/2 grip but actually need a 4 5/8. I plan to add a shrink wrap and overgrip. Would placing 4 oz of lead as described in your video provide good results, or would I need more lead. Thanks much and keep up the good work.
@James Gray There are usually lead tapes of 1/4 inch and 1/2 inch available in the market. The 1/4 inch width easily goes on both side or you can cut a 1/4 inch down the middle with a scissor.
If you add 4g at 12 an of won't balance it as the weight of an og is spread out rather than concentrated like it is at 12. To balance it properly you would need to put 4g in the buttcap. Easy to do with blu-tac. Personally I'd add 12g to the head. 4g in the butt cap and a leather grip plus of. Will add an ounce to the racket but that's ok.
I play with rackets between 12.9oz and 13.3 oz with lead tape, leather grips, and overgrips. I never feel like my arm is going to fall off. Maybe it's with these newer rackets that are really light to begin with.
I agree, I’m 61, 5’7”, 135 lbs and used to play with head prestige 95 with 6 grams on 10&2. Now with the prestige 360, 98, considering put some weigh. Maybe because I work out at the gym.
That's always the case if you add some weight in the racquet head😀😀😀. Even 4 grams can make a huge change … but consider playing a match for longer than 2 hours, maybe 3 times in a tournament weekend 😉💪.
He confused me with this as well. He kept contradicting himself. First he said 4 grams “at the top”. Then he said 6 grommets at the top, 6 and 9. If you 6 grommets at those 3 points that way more than 4 grams total. Then at the end he said “at the top” again. Confused
Hello Coach, how can i send you my racquet for a customization. I have a Head Graphene Touch Prestige Mid, ive added a lot of lead tape at 12-3-6-9 but have no idea how much it weights now. I string it with Luxilon Element at 57lbs, really like the feel. Any feedback would be nice, thank you
Use Tennis Warehouse University as a resource. There are customization tools and great information. This is not the guy to send your racquets to for customization imo.
I’m considering switching my Wilson clash 98 to a yonex vcore 95 or 98. Since I live in a region in Brazil where we don’t have play test racquets, can you tell me if the 95 would be way too difficult to handle and adapt?
No, it would not be too difficult to adapt. It would be a little heavier than your Clash, but it should have better feel and be more stable. As far as headsize, a 98 Wilson and a 95 Yonex are very similar.
So....now you're learning why you see most pros racquets with weight inside the handle and under the head guard. Of course whatever way a racquet weighted for a pro it's to their preferred spec. So, most average club players need to keep in mind, that will likely not help them.
Sadly, it won't stop Harry from churning out this kind of Naive videos .... That said, at least it introduces totally Naive players new to Tennis to the use of customisation, even though they might hurt themselves in process. Harry, sadly, seems to show scant regard whether his recommendations could cause harm.
I am thinking of adding some small weight to my Clash 100. As someone who has suffered arm issues in the past I am somewhat Leary. Is it worth the risk ? Also do you need to reapply the lead tape every time the racquet is restrung ?
@@pats300zx 1 year later I’ll answer since no one did. You may have even figured it out by now. The answer:No, you don’t need to replace the lead tape each time. However, wash your hands after using lead tape and keep your fingers away from your eyes and mouth. Lead is poisonous with ingestion/prolonged exposure.
