100% agree and you made perfect sense. And the crazy part is they were sent a message from someone that exposed this guy. Who knows how long it could have went on for. The industry is ripe for fraud yet its clear upper deck has put zero thought or resources into preventing it. With Connor Bedards card prices (one with a million $ bounty), internal fraud/theft could be a major issue. Hell what do we not know...
Wow absolutely crazy, I guess all those people waiting years for redemption or never getting them or getting the most random crap might all be connected…
This is absolutely nothing new. As early as 1989, employees from the upper deck factory, then in Yorba Linda, California, had 800 count boxes of card number one that they were selling at Frank and sons warehouse in Walnut, California, some 10 minutes north of the upper deck factory. Card number one just happened to be the iconic Ken Griffey Junior card.
People need to realize nothing is off the table for the aholes who will do anything to make a buck. Even the companies who make the cards do ahole things that wouldn't be acceptable in a morally run business. Trust no one but yourself, and let the diabolical people in this hobby get the karma they are so due for.
Hi Dan, Thank you for your great video about the alleged theft from Upper Deck. I especially appreciate that you credit your ‘source’, if I may use the term. Dan, you constantly provide clear and accurate information. Best Wishes, Peter
Just this last year alone has made me appreciate vintage cards so much more. Especially if you consider the late 90's, early 2000's 'vintage'. The cost of modern products is out of control. Add to that the missing cards, bad QC, loaded cases, etc... etc... It's a dizzying array of BS. And then the situation (with what passes as an autograph these days) of top players being exclusive with whatever company! Which really seems like a corporate pissing contest, and the collectors are the ones getting drenched. Apologies Dan, I really tried to keep my rant short mate.
The fact that Dan the Man is putting this info out there and American/canadian collectors and content creators aren’t talking about these cases should make us, as North Americans, embarrassed. And I mean that with naught but respect Dan. You are an integral whistleblower and we need to dedicate the same effort over on this side of the pond! It’s incredibly exasperating as an American collector (who didn’t find this out until I watched this particular exposè/piece)
The employee probably already knew what he was going to do when he was hired. Probably tipped off by a former or current employee of UD. What will be the result of this lawsuit? Do they expect to be repaid with someone working at a warehouse? Not really. They get a judgment against him. If he ever hits the lotto or gets an inheritance then UD can try to execute their judgment. There would also be the business losses for bookkeeping and tax purposes. So the lawsuit kind of formally legitimizes the business losses. Also, if UD has insurance for employee theft, they may have a pending insurance claim. If so, for his time there, they could simply blame every missing card in the plant on this single employee. That's how it often works. So I take the 'missing card' numbers and 'dollar amount' numbers with a bit of skepticism.
I've seen people being set up by employee thieves; to steal. It happened to me once, but I didn't bite, and I quit...years later, a guy I knew, did take the bait, and they blamed all theft on him and charged him with theft..
and this is why ladies and gents people dont like redemptions dont like card companies until it gets regulated dan this shit will keep happening honor system has will and never will work ever
The way the card companies are able to print money the same way as the us government needs to be regulated… they basically could print an unlimited amount of wemby golds or wemby silvers or wemby autos even wemby 1/1s and all of it is protected by a minimum wage employee in a panini shirt unlike the security atms & banks have
One perspective and most likely how these card manufacturers look at security is ACTUAL LOSS. These cards may have a value of 0.5m within the hobby but what did they cost to produce? A couple hundred dollars? As a business are you going to invest in an expensive security consulting company to come in for millions to protect a few hundred dollars? Same thing with governments printing money - we sell millions, they see paper :)
Sure but given they are redemptions for previously sold product their valuation should be matching the MSRP of the product itself. The cards within that box would be on a valuation scale for insurance purposes (i.e. base cards worthless etc).
I hope he was a relatively high up higher and not minimum wage type stuff. Also, it’s very true that these companies haven’t updated their processes to reflect the market value of cards. Even they think cards are ridiculously overpriced ha. It’s funny to think this job position will now be like working in a ghetto drug house, bagging up the product naked.
Had someone close t me buy me cards fr birthdays and Christmas over a 4 year time. That person had got into the hobby because they thought they could make big money . They started buying the wrong thing and started seeing there loses. When me and this person started feeding my cards was took out my cases and that person told me they bought them there taking them😢
Americans have the right to privacy and are protected from illegal search and seizure. A company can say no bags but they can't go through your stuff without a warrant in America.
Panini employees stealing redemptions too.
I briefly mentioned that. These companies are a bigger joke than what people think. They’re stuck in the 90s
And FedEx…
Too bad they’re not stealing Panini Points too
@@Inequitiesfacts. Steal them all.
People stealing from work?! I cant believe my ears! 😅 Employee theft is the biggest form of theft
Great video. Crazy that UD wouldn’t have a process in place to make sure no one is taking cards home.

"10 times the industry".. industry being a code word for their wallet

Crazy someone would steal 500k worth of cards and think they are going to get away with it .
Literally quit collecting back in 2004 because of the same thing with a Jordan Auto. Only started again a couple years ago but no UD of any kind.

Thank you mate, I always try and attribute where I can.
Truely amazing that better systems aren't in place.
Simply another method for scammers to scam people..... Get a job at a card company.... and away they go....
Let’s fly to the US and start doing interviews 😂

it may be hiring issue as well like where are they hiring from and how much was the employee was paid?

I believe they can when its part of your employment agreement!
