Want to take this moment to point out that while mainstream journalists have had their accounts reinstated (NYT, WaPo), the Left Wing organizers who were banned in the same time period (seemingly on the explicit instructions from Andy Ngo, according to a public Twitter exchange between him and Musk where Musk asks him to "point out antifa and I will ban them" [paraphrasing]) have NOT been reinstated. Some have gone so far to call this a deliberate feint and distraction tactic -- I don't think I really buy that, but it does clearly point the direction the platform is headed.
I mention it here because the only outlet I've seen reporting it so far has been The Intercept, and I really think more people ought to know about it and would care if they did know

Side note about PayPal (Elon's first big business venture): I'm pretty sure it was only as successful as it was due to its partnership with eBay. Way back before Amazon exploded, eBay was *the* place to shop online, and PayPal was the most commonly accepted form of payment there, due to its integration with the site.

Hardly any decent speculative fiction authors are right wing: Gene Roddenberry and the properties derived from and inspired by his original vision have turned multiple generations into stargazing utopian communists, H. G. Wells was a full on socialist who wrote "The War of the Worlds" as a critique of British imperialism, Mary Shelley was a proto-feminist with a flagrantly pansexual brother, Ursula K. Le Guin was an anarcho-socialist who wrote about nonbinary gender identities all the way back in the 1960s in books of The Hainish Cycle and who's Earthsea books were plagiarized by Joey Rowling for all of the parts of Harry Potter that actually hold up, the list goes on. Practically the only right wing sci fi properties of any note are Robert Heinlein's "Starship Troopers," which is mainly remembered for Paul Verhoeven's adaptation which completely subverts the story and themes into a satire of what it was meant to be promoting (check out Knowing Better's video on the topic) and Atlas Shrugged, which is known for being the book right wingers pretend to have read when they don't pretend to have read the Bible.

Fun correction, the Golden Path wasn't an inevitability. The way precognition in Dune works isn't so deterministic. A precog can see various possibilities and influence events through their actions to make certain outcomes more likely.
    Spoilers below
the "Golden Path" of Leto II was to run an awful authoritarian empire for so long and so thoroughly that after his death humanity would be traumatized into never accepting living gods or emperors again. This was far from inevitable but with his precognition he determined it was the only way to break the endless cycle of empire, and amassed the power to make it a reality.

@@Albinojackrussel The point of it is actually that Great Man theory or rather more generally the human tendency to want a messianic figure or charismatic leader to solve our problems for us is a bad thing. I didn't fully get into it, because I felt it would be a distraction. The Golden Path was basically meant to be a final proof against authoritarianism and messianic figures. Leto didn't become the Worm Emeror to lead Humanity down a glorious path, but to lead them down a path so horrible humanity would never trust a proclaimed messiah ever again. And the reason why Paul foresaw it but didn't/couldn't actually follow the golden path is a combination of factors, one being that it's a truly horrible thing to contemplate being given that much power and knowing with certainty that you will abuse it and that the best path forward is to abuse it to the maximum so no one else will be given that power. Additionally Paul is a Bad Guy, ultimately he fails because he is not motivated by the survival and flourishing of humanity, but by his personal grievances. He only cares about House Atreides and the Fremen.
tldr; Dune is a longwinded critique of Great Man history, not an endorsement of it

If we’re talking about great theory and the “woke mind virus” just look at Martin Luther King jr: he is man who we put up as the role reason segregation ended, but we ignore the women who organized the protests, or the people with cars that played a massive role driving people around during the bus bans. King did a lot yes, but he was standing on the shoulders of years of talks and group action.

My neighbors recently posted pro-Elon propaganda on FB (i.e. he was boy genius who came from nothing to become the wealthiest man in the world and therefore he is a role model for their children). I shouldn't have to tell you that they are also a pro-trump family who have children that have served in the military. I shouldn't also have to tell you that they are very working class. They've fulfilled every requirement of the "American dream" (served the country, have a job, own a house and have some kids), yet have told me are still struggling to make ends meet. This is reality for MANY Americans, yet they extoll the virtues of a billionaire. I don't think they're idiots, rather, they don't know what they don't know. They never had the opportunity, through education or otherwise, to really expand their horizons outside of their social circle who all think the same things. The house they are in belonged to one of their parents and I think it was their grandparents before that? What's interesting is that for all their pro-America, individualistic thinking - this post indicates they will happily bend the knee to a powerful autocrat as long as they share similar beliefs. Like Jack said, this is terrifying. Also like Jack, I try to lead by demonstrating compassion and empathy rather than explanations as to why their thinking is wrong. I hope, in some small way, I can make them see that not all of us godless, gay, communists are the boogeyman the status quo makes us out to be.

You know, Elon Musk and I may agree on one thing, which is that trans people are among the leading drivers of social change today. Of course, as someone who has profited off the status quo, he's vehemently opposed to any changes to it.
Actually, we may agree on one other thing, which is that billionaires should not exist, and he's been doing everything in his power to set his fortune on fire.

In terms of acadmic history, I believe it is important to say that "Great Man Theory" is not as much of a theory in itself but rather a term through which conventional historiography has been critiqued - and I would argue fairly so - because it simplifies hugely complex interactions between cultures and societies down to the decisions and actions of leaders, too often to the exclusion of all else.
This kind of simplification allows the French Revolution and its fight for survival and influence in Europe to be told as "the story of Napoleon" or the American War of Independence as "the story of George Washington". This is handy for teaching children the rough outline of a series of complicated events within the space of schoolclass, but if most people only get to subscribe to such historiography, everyone will be left with a society based on a poor understanding of its past. The "Great Man Theory" is in itself a term of derision used to critique what is all too often the history taught to us as standard, and I think this distinction is very meaningful for getting the whole picture.
I do not want to single out this channel specifically; many wonderful channels are doing great stuff despite the misleading framing of "Great Man Theory".
Good video overall - thank you for making it... and merry Christmas everyone!

So I think you may have misunderstood the golden path. The golden path isn't the inevitability of history, but the one path that results in humanity surviving.
This is the Crux of the conflict between Paul and Leto. Both searched for this path and saw the horror inherent in it. They both saw that without the diaspora and anti-precog abilities, humanity is vulnerable to the rise of the machines which they thought were gone (particularly as the machines advanced where humanity did not thanks to the Butlerian Jihad).
Paul essentially, both out of his own despair and horror, decides not to take humanity down the golden path. In doing so, he has essentially doomed Leto into the path. Leto resents Paul for this, and Paul ultimately sacrifices what remains of his sister in "atonement" for this burden.
The only reason Leto is willing to take the path is because he was already inhuman prior to his transformation. Unlike a Kwizatz Haderach (probably spelt wrong), he is technically an abomination (he is possessed by ALL of his ancestors)... Though iirc that's less apartment in children of dune.
