About me : Retired American Expat Brian & Filipina wife Luisa, living in the Angeles City / Clark Pampanga Philippines.
I give you a lot of credit being able to live with so many people. I need my peace, quiet, and freedom
He likes chaos, its a side effect of being generous to random strangers.
My strategy after 7 years in the province: Let the member(s) in your family that you can trust with your money sort things out. DO NOT GET INVOLVED. If you take the initiative if you show your face you get overcharged and scammed left and right. Over time you can teach your family what the quality and style is that you expect and if they love and respect you, they will represent your interests and avoid that they/you get overcharged or scammed. But in any case expect a VERY low level of expertise in all trades of work. Often hard to swallow that DIY can be better than the "experts".
@juergenziebell "...family that you can trust", is the operative statement. You are absolutely correct.
I have run into it myself, and have learned to have my wife take care of everything. I stay in the room. She does all the shopping. So in conclusion I have learned they will over charge you, lie, steal, cheat you, while wearing a smile. Not because they are friendly but that they are sizing you up.
To quote another Philippines you tuber. “They just don’t care”
Good Luck my friend I hope you can find a good tech to do your repair
Actually, a dirty condensing coil is a common issue causing poor cooling. You should vacuum and blow out the lint and pet hair every year.
they usually do a visual inspection check all lines to see where the freon might have leaked. most of the time its found this way, if not then pressure test. fix the leak , add the freon. if leak not fixed , freon leaks back out in a few hours , a week , depending how big the leak is
This guy’s not going to last long in the province. He might try to stick it out until the first of the year (2025) just out of “pride”…then he’ll be gone.
My experiences on poor refrigeration in the PI are nieces and nephews standing in front of the fridge with the door open. Every time the door opens 80 degree moist air replaces the 35 degree dry air. A full unit is also better than an empty unit.
Yes! Same thing I observed over and over. In the west a parent would stop a child and scold him, but not in the Philippines. Child raising is completely different there. You do not discipline children there. They are free to do anything they please. Mothers will even tell you, “I follow my son”.
The freon is in a closed system. If you need freon you got a leak. It will all leak out unless you find and fix the leak first. Then get the air out of the system with a vaccum pump, then you can add new freon.
When I did house removals, you move the fridge from old house to new house ,if the fridge is on its side or back ,that upsets the gasses so you shouldn't switch it on straight away unless the gasses don't circulate properly.
Besides putting Freon in the frig there also is a leak somewhere because like an A/C unit its a sealed system..If they not find the leak they will be out again adding freon...
5:19 What came out when he "cut the line" (whatever that means) was under pressure. Leak = no pressure.
Maybe 1 out of 5 repairmen knows what their doing. That's being optimistic...
Was a professional mover for years here in the states. What people don't know. You move that refrigerator, it bounces, it's on its side, the oil in it has shaken and moved. What they do, plug it in right away, big no-no, you just killed your refrigerator. You have to let it settle down for at least half a day or more to stabilize.
If your freon is low, means you have a leak, the leak needs to be fixed or you will have to add freon again, if you move a frig it has to keep standing up, it cant be layed down, it will slug down the compressor meaning it will put liquid in the compressor , putting it upright for hours should fix it, the system is hermetically sealed so if it leaks you will need a leak detector and fix the leak , there is a defrost element inside the freezer, that is probably what he was looking at, I had my last frig 30 years, all I did was clean out under it, it was a GE
You're saving so much money living there, just consider it charity.. give all your money away. That's all they really want from you anyway. Right?
You should have been invisible from the start...have nothing to do with it. Let the family deal with it and you stay upstairs out of the way. Those guys see you...hehe, to the cleaners my friend.
I had a similar issue with Samsung. One of our upstairs AC units Samsung was one year and two months old. They sent their people out, but because it wasn’t under warranty they replaced parts twice, and it still wasn’t getting cold. And then they wanted to replace 11,500 pesos worth of parts and they said that was going to fix it. I had somebody else come out and they told me the compressor went out right away. So Samsung was just replacing parts to make as much money off of us as possible. Lucky I had the other guys come out to fix the problem for less than what Samsung wanted just for parts.. sometimes a big company over here. Will try to scam you just the same as a small guy.
Porget it!! Don’t make any report . Call off your uncle!! Don’t make an enemy with a Philipino!!
Losing face can be losing your life there!
Holy cow they all moved in -- good luck with that --
Not only in the Philippines that happens Con artists everywhere
especially the fallen states of ameriKa.
3,500 for cleaning, about 3,000 too much. Similar situation happen to me once.
Welcome to the Province
Try asking the repair guy to cook your eggs!😂
It's not made to be repaired nowadays. Just get a new one.
I'm more surprised that you're surprised...
Usually refrigerators have the lines ,at least ones I've seen, the lines are covered by the insulation purposely so you can't put freon in them an make you have to buy a new one and most repair guys won't bother refilling them and advise you to buy a new one in case the leak is in a difficult or otherwise inaccessible place.I see the guy you have there now appears to have the right equipment(I've worked in HVAC systems)to work on the cooling system. As long as he knew to tap into the low pressure return line to refill the freon you should be good to go. Plus if he installed a fill connection you can fill as needed. I'd buy one of those temperature thermometers that can be placed in the fridge and/or freezer to keep an eye on the temperature so you can monitor it an be sure the cold is constant an that there's no more leaks that could be bleeding off the freon showing the problem is continuous. Refrigerators are expensive to replace for sure but are purposefully designed to be a b**ch(and expensive)to fix just to get you to buy a new one.
Never buy inverter anything
The freezer guy took one look at you and thought here we go.
True with the dirty ugly tattoos said to him self here another woke fool to be ripped off. Has to be a fool to destroy his skin.
Glad you found the right guy to fix the fridge, When I lived in the Philippines I got ripped off by a Electrian who claimed the wiring in the whole house was bad fortunately my nephew stepped in it was just a bad outlet the guy wanted to charge me 35000 pesos we sent him running he was recommended by a family member who thought he was legit things happen, great her brother new some one,
5:04 Why in the world would a guy bring brazing tanks to repair a fridge before even finding the problem?
5:14 Why in the world would a guy cut the refrigerant line? Do you mean he opened something.
5:19 What came out was "only air". How do you know it was only air? Because the guy that just cut your line says so? That you said air came out and made a sound means whatever gas was in there was under pressure. Freon gases generally are invisible and can't be smelled by most people. It appears the same as "air". But let's say it was air. How did air get into the line AND be under pressure? The only way possible is if someone pumped air into the line instead of a Freon gas.
The reason you think no Freon came out of the cut line is because that was your initial guess and people love to be right. This is called a "incredulity fallacy".
Fridges and all devices with Freon gas are designed with valves to allow access to the refrigerant without allowing any gas to escape. So that guy #2 opening something and letting gas out didn't know what he was doing.
Mess start to finish and I doubt it's over yet.
Thanks for your input and all your questions. Woke up this morning and the reff was working fine. Don't know what else to tell you. Also reffs in the Philippines are designed different than other reffs around the world.
@@PhillyinthePhilippines The only difference is the voltage. They use 220 volts current.
If you need to charge your refrigerator there maybe a leak, check controller first. The ride from AC mite of cracked a line
Step 1 moving forward... check the name plate of the refrigerator to find the type of refrigerant it uses... (R134A)... and then find out what type of refrigerant is in the tanks that guy is filling with...???... The first guy was close to being correct... clean coils and see if that works... if not my second check would be the temperature splits.. one line should be hot and one line should be cold coming off the compressor... if its freezing up.. change the "defrost control timer"... the guy with the amp meter for amps.. is valid too... if any component is out of spec then its a potential problem.. The broken plastic is no big deal... the defrost control could be behind that plastic... Good Luck.. but not to worry... you can always buy a new one.
It's sad that there are con artists everywhere nowadays. Hopefully Lot's uncle can fix your appliance. Maybe you can update us tomorrow.
Do not pay until the job is done100% satisfactory.
1. If you have to add refrigerant you have a leak . Find it , fix it.
2. The guys had the refrigerant can upside down pumping liquid refrigerant? Hard on compressor valves 😮.
That's a I'm in a hurry move that could cost you.
Upright pumping gas is the best way.
Good luck with dat .
Philly, that guy took the shirt right off your back. Wonder if your refrigerator/freezer affected by the constant rainy, hot and humid weather? It’s basically sitting outside underneath your ceiling in the house
You got a leak that needs to be fixed. If it isn't fixed, the new freon will leak out too. Take care.
You definitely got knocked at that price Brian.
Amazing Philippines 🇵🇭
You even get ripped off in the west. I'm on my guard EVERYWHERE. it is what it is...take it as a learning experience.
Too funny, house full of Philippinos! Families and friends are close- just got to get use to lots of company! Yes, first think if there is a problem the smile and laugh! Bests the alternative!
The backbone of Community is Networking, just review the source 🔍 because Nothing is Freon ✅🦅
Loving the province/family life videos. However, You've been dealing with the fridge problem for 2 months! I doubt Lut's uncle has been gone that long. His guy could have fixed the fridge a long time ago. Apparently someone didn't speak-up when the problem was 1st noticed.
We or should I say I just kept putting it off.
@@PhillyinthePhilippines, How did I know that before you replied to my comment. 🤣
OMG 3.5 k !! Robbery!
Saying that, our fridge freezer packed up yesterday. The light comes on , but no motor running
No chance of getting anyone local here in remote Pangasinan to fix it.
So looks like a new fridge situation! Lol
Had just bought a load of meat, so am buying ice, to at least keep it cool for a few days!
More fun in the Philippines??
Duh you don't give him money, not a peso until you check his work. 7 years and you haven't learned that ?
Making ice in the jungle? Brian, you are Harrison Ford! In "The Mosquito Coast" film from the 80's!
Maybe you should look for a new fridge Brian , maybe the moving to new location damaged the fridge to
Freon is a sealed system. In a perfect world, freon should last forever in a fridge or A/C system. If your freon is low or empty you have a freon leak somewhere. Hopefully, your guy checked for the leak otherwise it will leak again. It may last a year, month, or a day depending on the size of the leak.
You should get a fridge/freezer thermometer to keep tabs on things. You can adjust the temps to be correct for each unit. And while your at it. Get a simple little temp and humidity device to sit on your table in the house somewhere. Or to use out in the shade and sun to see outdoor temp and humidity. Then you can give us an exact weather report and not guess.😂
Thanks for the tips!
@@PhillyinthePhilippines Cheap items you may see out shopping. Lol.
So what's worse , getting robbed in the city or get conned by like 3 people In the province. I clean mine two times a year , cut down on repairs. You are much more likely to find poor quality help there.
I think LingLing would have fixed it...If she can build a fire.. Fixing a freezer.. easy for her
Unfortunately this sort of thing happens everywhere
My brother Brian. Finally we can see what's going on here with this vlog. LoL Your wife is out vlogging you FYI❤
prehistoric Philipines country life makes Appalachians look like aristocrats
I’m not a Refrigerator expert but I will venture a guess that something was damaged during the move that caused the R-134 to leak out. The refrigerator guy should find out where it’s leaking, repair it, do a vacuum/purge on it before putting the new refrigerant in it.
Absolutely correct,,,freon always stays in the system ,unless theres a leak,,then it needs to be repaired,,then charged.
@@tomcataleno9128 I worked on antennas that were installed on US Navy submarines. Since they were metal and had active electrical components, they were sealed within a fiberglass shell that prevented water from entering. We loaded the antenna in and pulled a vacuum that had to be held for a period of time. Then we charged it with dry nitrogen gas to keep and condensation from forming that could mess with the electronics.
I will go to the barangay captain this guy is just ripping off people he's probably never been reported sounds like it's just a game with him
I’m no appliance guru, but if the fridge got cold I have a hard time believing there was no Freon. Let us know how it works out.
What you’ve just experienced with that scammer repairman is nothing new…..idiot scammers like that are also alive and well in the USA…For me, I will only fork out cash only if I am totally satisfied…and; I usually will demand a written agreement that protects my interests…..
Looks like a Shortage of shirts there?
Washing powder is expensive you know?
big name fridges will send their authorised technician nearest to your area, and send him to you. usually you pay for his transportation to and from your place for the diagnosis and repair(some do it free depending on the warranty terms). ive had that done with my washing machine , spin dryer etc itll be a bit pricier but itll be a legit repair with guarantee
It's Not Always Fun in the Philippines... Good thing Lot's Uncles got in there. Glad the Fridge is fixed. 😊
Yes, thanks
Rather than fix it, buy a new one. I have a house built in the Philippines for me to retire after living here in US. Each time they do something in the house and my brother leave them they we’re taking some items and before you realized it, gone. Couple of times happened, so watch them each time. A lot of con men/scammer in the Philippines especially they knew you are a foreigner. Lesson learned. Don’t trust them. They will bleed you to death.
If you have no freon there is a leak that needs to be fixed first
3500 is expensive. 500 is about the labor rate plus parts….For skilled Kuya…No formal training…just a Kuya in brgy who appears knowledgeable. Foreigner pricing….1000-1500.
It was a good guess for the price
Is it still more fun in The Philippines?
Not in the province!
Nope
Is for the locals
Hell no get out while you can
500 pesos should have been the cleaning charge. Live and learn like you said.
Of course they laugh! It’s a different culture where they laugh at different thinks than us. Laughing there does not mean that one is happy. Be wary of that. A smile does not mean that they like you, either. In fact, they may hate you, but they will ever stop smiling.
That's the reason why I never do residential refrigeration period. Customers always think they know more than the technicians. If pressure came out of the tube it was refrigerant. I would have zero confidence that that refrigerator is fixed. It might be time for you to buy a new one.
If you have to add Freon you have a serious problem some where adding Freon might help for a month .
never make a deal with fly by night mechanics or contractors. there's plenty of them in the Puilippines.
C’mon, you’ve been living out in the Philippines for years, p3500 is A LOT for anything regarding manual labor! You got skin taxed…
3500 you got scammed
Cleaning is no more then 1k including service call and labor.
If only freezer doesnt works chances the blower motor , it cant be freon. You have a frost free refrigerator, it the fan flower stop it will not freeze anything in the freezer.seeing they charge means the original freon is gone? It must be filled according to factory specification. I see no vaccumm pump ?
I got lucky. My filipino brother in law is a building contractor. If something goes screwy at our house, a tradesman is there within a day. We just had the porch ceiling replaced with concrete backer board ( the old plywood was peeling badly). Two days later, it was fully replaced with 2 coats of paint. He even cleaned and repaired the gutter that had caused the problem. $130 parts and labor out the door. I am scared to think what it would have cost me in the states.
You got swindled. Overpaid by at least $65
@@mateor7302 lol, considering the square footage, and what I have in monthly income, it was a pittance that only increases the house's value when we flip it in 2 years. My wife spends more on one of her weekly shopping trips to the mall.
How many members of your wife g/ family in there? It seems like too noisy in your vlog.
Welcome to the province
Was the repair guy American, cuz there’s a lot con guys out here in California. Seriously! 🤣😂🤣
Hi Brian , glad you are enjoying the Province, I'm a Grumpy 65 expat , I just can't take 20 people in my house.

That's 20 people rattling away in a language you don't understand. Not for me either.

@@lezleipage1324 I go visit my wife's family in the province once every 2 months , I pretend to smile , buy them food , give them money and get the hell out of there.
Mabuhay welcome to the Philippines. Skin tax and hopefully you don't have a leak in the freon system
April my electric bill was 1600.00 pesos. May the meter reader say me came over with a 16,000 peso bill. I laughter so hard. Skin tax. Took the bill back and came the next day with 4,000 peso bill. Still to high. But I payed it.
people who can talk a good talk more likely than not cannot do technical things like repairing electronics. technical people more often than not are not social butterflies, are often labeled introverts and keep to themselves. that's the first thing you should check for when hiring for those types of jobs. the one you hired is more suited for politics or social media.
As an aircraft mechanic, that describes me well. Big time introvert. I learn more from observing and listening than from blabbing.
Got a good family life, Philly.
Unfortunately in any country, you can find con men.
Take it on the chin, don't kick up, small island you live on.
Keep enjoying life.
I don’t know much about refrigeration but what i have learned is a refrigerator is a closed system , if you have no freon there must be a leak .
That guy's the cousin of the chef at Tequila Reef
Hello to all of you. You knew what was wrong with it. To sad that you could not have fixed it. Like you said live and learn. Some times you have to ask around. But lessons learned. How are you going to fix the broken plastic?
I was told it can be patched.
@@PhillyinthePhilippines oh well I hope it will work for you.

In the first world we have these things called 'certifications' to make sure trades people can repair the things they claim they can repair. When you live in the PH you get what you experience from a third world country, I am surprised based on your experience in the PH that you are shocked by all of this!
People commenting wants you the leave the Island because of a minor setback. You are in paradise.. don't let othe say otherwise. It cost thousands of dollars to just visit where you are.
In the end you just might be better off buying a new fridge with a warranty, Philly. Maybe give the old one to your family there, or give it away/sell it for cheap to a family in need somewhere there in the province. 🙂
I been here in the Philippines almost 9 months from what I seen, is once they see foreigner they think big pesos to make, they don't think of keeping a happy customer to keep you coming back, but instead to rob you as much as they can and brag about it to their peers and family, no business concept of running a successful business, I learned to trust family here more than strangers and you still have to be careful on that as well...be very aware of the ppl you deal with, if no price list, I move on

It's not common for a fridge that new to leak refrigerant. So the other tech may have been trying to trouble shoot to save you money. Having the amp check is a good way to see quickly if the compressor is working proper with refrigerant. It looks like it's still under warranty to me. But I hear you on skilled labor now. It's almost non existent. In the 80s there was every kind of tech, Carpenter, auto mechanics, painters , electricians etc. If your new guys didn't isolate the leak and solder it up, you'll be right back where you are now, very soon.
Cheap way is nitrogen fill for leak check.

Can we see the crack he made in your freezer? My wifes family in Dao, got burnt the same way from an AC guy,
If the freon is gone theirs a leak. You need to find and fix the leak with dye.
Hopefully you recorded the con man's face just in case he returns out of the blue. You are considered rich by filipino standards and he knows the layout of the first floor of your house.
I have the same exact LG Frig. love it. never had a problem. good luck with yours. If you have a DES marketing on your island try to use their guys to service your AC and appliances. They are good and not too expensive.
The rule should be, do not pay until your complaint is resolved with a solid result. If the result/fix will not be seen until a day after, then the pay should be the same. I am sure Lot's family will have your back just don't confront them yourself to be on the safe side. On another note, experience like this, like any other scam should be told so people will be informed how scammers operate. Just charge it to experience brother, God bless.
Sorry to hear you got ripped off Brian. I hope Uncle's friend fixes your frig. That kind of thing happens everywhere nowadays, especially when you are dealing with people you don't know.
