Quick tips from someone who has worked behind the scenes for a couple of channels before: - By the time your video is released you need to have your shorts ready. I cant remark how much this can help a video grow and get traction during the first hours. Take your 3h video essay, clip a few shorts with the most interesting/potential viral topics, put then in vertical resolution and start spamming them the moment your og video is released. This have a way better ROI than the automatic youtube promotions, is more organic (youtube shorts allow you to link the origin video), and can be reused along other social media platforms. - Your video will reach your maximum audience during the first 48h but you already know this. What you usually wants is a 2-3 days promotion instead of one that last 2 weeks (or a combination of both; short-early promotions help with views and viralty while the longer ones are better for channel grow and fidelity ). Also, because of the waiting period until your videos are approved for promotion try to upload it a week before and set it to private, this way you can have your promotion ready for the moment it is released. Anyways thanks for video, its always very interesting to see analytics from different demographics and niches this clear.
This....if Brian is willing to throw down $200 towards ads and about $2 per subscriber, then you'd probably get better bang for your buck paying for a shorts editor to make shorts for each podcast before it's released. You can also take what other podcasts have done and run a contest to offer someone $10k to get the most viewed podcast short. That accomplishes a few things, you get a TON of eyeballs on your show, and not only do you find some of the best editors, but folks that also know how to play the shorts game as well.
11:19 Hey Brian, nice to see you starting to mess with the promotion part of the RUclips Business. Just wanna give a little bit of tech on this matter. Try to promote shorter videos with this, not full episodes. Think of this as before a movie, make some kind of teaser, cliff hanger or even an ad promoting your video. Promote this, with the CTA link going for the full episode. With this you can spend SO MUCH LESS MONEY and get viewers that know what to expect and chose to watch the talk. The worst thing you want is a bunch of people seeing 30s of your video in a ad and thats it (the pre roll thing you cannot even rewind the video, if they want). Thanks for sharing the data bro! Keep up the grind.
The first 30 seconds of the menard video are actually really fast paced and engaging imo due to the intro format, so I think it still has that hook in 30 seconds. But I see your overall point. Thanks for the comment.
@@Brian_F Hey brian, I wanted to add to this chain - I highly recommend you create a duplicate unlisted version of videos that you advertise with and not the original public video. TL;DR it can really negatively effect both your video and channels average watch time, average completion rate, etc. I have seen so many channels over the years accidentally destroy their channel by advertising long form content and getting low completion rates. Context I'm a Data Scientist who works in marketing technology*. Disclaimer* I've been doing data warehouse work for the last 6 months and the algo always changes so they could have weighted referral sources differently, but in my experience it still matters a lot - even if the traffic comes from an ad.
I am bummed to hear that the MenaRD episode didn't do so well organically. It really showed a side to Mena that he doesn't project into the spaces I circulate, and I enjoyed it a lot. So it pleases me that you used this as a source of experimentation.
The real advertisement was Brian f making this video to get people to go back and watch the podcast. But for real you should slice up old trash talks and print out a bunch of RUclips shorts.
10:19 Heeeeyyy Brazil! Let's go!!! We support Brian_Ad! 🇧🇷 It seems to be a good feature to spend on a few videos the creator thinks will bring more subscribers and new viewers to stay on the long run.
I actually really appreciate this inside look. It's interesting, i appreciate the transparency, and also, its just cute and nice seeing you talk about your little business/advertising venture, and see you talk about the video you were proud of. It was a great interview! Ultimately, breaking even on the video, but getting the viewership and bonus subs seems like a win, considering the video was doing poorly at the start. A sort of salvage of the situation for a video that deserved the outreach. =3
The fact that Brian can make me watch a 30 minute long video about the inner works of RUclips paid promotions, even though it's not even something I'm supposedly looking for in a fighting games channel, speaks volumes as to just how good of a content creator he is. I can watch him rant about Dune, RUclips promotions, and probably whatever the hell he chooses to talk about next.
Hi Brian, just wanna confirm what you said about people clicking on down the road. I definitely will click on some content I’m interested in, see it’s lengthy, and then hold off until a more appropriate time like a workout or when I’m auto piloting work spreadsheets. Love the longer content like trash talk or your tourney recaps and hope you do more of em. Best to ya in 2025.
As a fellow youtuber in the gaming niche but with a completely other game genre it is wild how similar our statistics/experiences/conclusions on things are. This was a super fascinating video, thank you!
personally from someone that enjoys trash talk quite a lot and i see a lot of people mentioned shorts which can help for sure personally i think the pacing of the videos is what makes it hard to stay and watch i haven’t looked at the comments for this before but i think you ask a lot of questions that are good you should give the guest some space and time to answer and let them express themselves but still an amazing idea as someone trying to get better even in another game like tekken its really inspiring to hear different type of high level players perspective and see why people still play and maybe don’t in select cases but it’s really nice to have the spotlight on these players for themselves instead of the game and i hope to continue to see new episodes to support!
Trash talk as it stands is very niche, your talk with Mena for example, was very directed torwards an audience that is familiar with sf6. Maybe to have more reach, it would be nice for it to be presented as a fighting game podcast in general, and trying to approach players from other scenes and reach new audiences. I'd love to see that
I want to go as deep into the niche as possible, and see how far i can push it. I have no interest in widening the scope, but rather bringing more people into the fold is the goal. I know that limits growth but those are my priorities.
Actually I think a Premium viewer is worth more than a free viewer. I remember Hank Green did an explainer when it was called RUclips Red and had that conclusion. But it also probably depends how much RUclips the Premium user watches. Even with that it would be really surprising if a free user is worth more. Like is a free Spotify user worth more to Spotify than a premium user?
Hmm interesting. I have to check that out. Interestingly enough on twitch for example they'd lose money if everyone used turbo for example, that's where I based that assumption on, but i don't know for sure how that works out on youtube!
30:03 yo Brian, non-ironically the subs in other languages really helps advertising; like in Brazil, most people see there see something in English and just doesn't care about it cuz of language barrier.
TLDR: Good idea, but I wonder if it is worthwhile.
And now u also mande a whole new vídeo to talk about the other vídeo and the experience using the promotion feature at the same time. Very smart. Now im gonna watch the Mena Episode that i still didnt for some reason.
i've seen an ad for a song a while back for a song named Mayday Mayday from Tsukoyomi, 2 seconds in and i was instantly in their channel subbing and binging all of their songs
In my perspective, authentically revealing to us and/or reminding us about how passionate you are about something (like you have just done as of 6:44 in) gets me interested in it far more than RUclips's algorithm shenanigans ever could. Imagowatch that vid.
Your latest videos with transparency are me on the purple dot for sure. Like your other content is great, I need to be in the mood for it; but this insight is definetely interesting for youtubers in a niche like me.
I've been making sure to tune in on every trash talk. I think its a great series to have, you don't usually see many in depth interviews on the current fgc pros or other members in it and thats valuable to have
Love this video, always super appreciate any time content creators and streamers are willing to give a more in depth look behind the curtain for how all of this runs! Only prior videos I've seen on it have been The Spiffing Brit's largescale experiments in manipulating various youtube metrics in the advertising and impression/viewtime metrics (which if you havent seen brian could be worth looking into for some really nutty stuff...)
i regularly check my subscription feed, but sometimes i end up missing some videos i wanna watch, because the thumbnail / title either don't catch my eye or my brain doesn't associate them with the channel i really like to watch! Now, for your podcast, i missed all episodes of TrashTalk by around three days each and only known of their existence them when i encountered the Clips you post later, i think it has something to do with the thumbnails not being standardized and straight forward, with the TrashTalk logo having too much detail and being small as well. Maybe the thumbnails need a more standard format with consistent graphic layout maybe your face, the guest's face with some graphics separating and the word Podcast visible could help? i don't know i! Also thank you for your amazing hard work, seeing stories told by you and the FGC in general got me into my small country's local community and it has been a blessing, again thank you so much!
Just wanna add that I appreciate how often you make these "behind the scenes" videos Brian. Transparency is always informative, in some way or another. PS: Also doing my God-given duty as a brazillian and say "pls come to brasil" after Brazil being mentioned. lmao Although tbh it's hot as all hell this time of the year, I can't really recommend it.
I didn't watch the Mena video, despite watching like 5 other Trask Talk videos. I think the reason was because in the month or so preceding it, I had been suggested two or three other high quality, long-form type videos featuring him. One was a documentary, another he and Justin Wong were on almost like a game show format. I was kind of burnt out on Mena. Not sure if that was anyone else's experience or not, but maybe the timing was just unlucky.
Hey, I always appreciate any content creators that gives us a peek behind the curtain. Thank you for being so candid with your journey on this. I found this extremely interesting
Appreciate the window into how things work. Will admit so far I've only watched/listened to the iDom and Sajam episodes. The length of the show means I put it off until there's room for it and it usually takes the place of having a stream on.
Man, I put the mena podcast vidéo on my watch later playlist, and I watched it quite quickly after. I watched it in 1 or 2 sitting, it's really really what you described, really interesting on several layers. But fighting game is a niche, you can only compare to the biggest fgc youtuber performances (sajam/ Maximilian Dodd?) Personnaly I follow your RUclips content since sfv balrog era (2017/2018?). Your content is often interesting and well cut
I might be wrong! I've heard other takes. My opinion on that was data that suggested that twitch turbo users or worth less than regular users who watch ads. I need to get more data on that info
People have always said Be proud to invest into yourself and what you believe in But…. I always been iffy about promoting due to bots? Actually attracting real people 😅😅
as a creator myself i appreciate this look at the feature. ive never done it myself but now i know what im really investing in should i choose to do so
Our studio did this when we released out documentary series (I believe we mostly did this for our trailer) but that was also something where the scale was really big and the audience was already built in because of our prior series. It's interesting to see what this is like for a creator that's an one person on a newer project!
you should do another video or small update like this in the near future comparing the analytics from the promoted podcast MenaRD video and this video explaining why you did it and seeing if more people were "organically" interested in the explanation video.
Maybe you should have a specific channel for Trash Talk. I didn't even know you did a podcast 😢 and maybe the issue is a thumbnail one bc just seeing MenaRD in a thumbnail doesn't tell me much about what's going to be in the video and why I should care? I'll definitely be watching bc I love longer content and podcasts so having one about FGC community is sick
Little caveat on the promotion subs, when I scroll on mobile and get ad recommendations sometimes I subscribe on accident. For some reason, on the iOS app the promoted videos have a fat subscribe button right underneath it and I’ve accidentally subbed that way before. Anecdotal obvious but I’m sure I can’t be the only one.
a lot of the episodes are in my when i have time category guess i will check this out tomorrow with how much you are proud of it. i block the shit out of ads so just joined channel instead
You mentioned English being your audience's primary language but don't underestimate the power of Spanish subtitles, especially for a promotion effort into NA/SA. Though I image that would be quite expensive for a 3 hour long video if you don't go with AI translated subs.
Whenever I see you upload to the podcast series, I go on spotify and download the new episode so I can listen to it in the car. Maybe people doing that means less people watching on RUclips and that's why it looks like its reaching less people
18:23 I actually can say that I have. I saw an ad last year give or take and it was for a channel going through EVERY PS1 game in alphanumeric order and I was really intrigued by it.
Hello from the Browse Features! If I don't know you, and the video is three hours, I need to be convinced it's even worth starting. For all I know, the Mena video is unedited rambling, a stream VoD, or a Twitter news update that doesn't even have the guest present. If it's your magnum opus, don't let me think it could be thrice-a-week gaming filler!
It's sad when you put a ton of work into something and it doesn't do well, and then you barely put any work into a different vid and it blows up like yo wtf
I have a confession to make, I'm a binge watcher, even on RUclips. I usually save up videos, even from the channels I'm subscribed to. I like to watch a lot of the same type of content when I'm in the right mood, and not just when it's a new upload. So I'm one of those weirdos that will watch something that was uploaded months ago. But then I usually don't engage, besides leaving a like. Sorry if I'm a bad subscriber.
I definitely agree with what someone else said. You should do 5-15 minutes cuts of the podcasts. because those are way more digestible and easier to click on than a 3 hour videos. And that will promote the podcast
Maybe you should try splitting the videos into parts. 2+hours sounds like LOTR extended edition to me and it is hard to commit to knowing how long it is. Benefit is you can also create hype and have more content over time, since you soon might burn through the FGC GOATs and what then? I like your previews at the beginning. They would leave quite a cliffhanger if left at the end of the end of a part. Think ANIME - it's easy to waste 10 episodes of 20 mins but hard to commit to a 3+ hours movie. Cheers.
I’m assuming something counting as a view is similar to how previewing a video counts as a view (i.e. when hovering over a video it’ll start playing and count as being viewed/show up in your watch history if done for a few seconds). So even just a bit of the ad will make it count as a view.
Totally anecdotal so take me with a grain of salr but I do remember seeing a preroll ad for the MenaRD interview. It was after I followed on the apple podcasts app which is where I listen to Trash Talk so I hadn't "seen" the video yet but I've noticed Google most often advertises me things I've already paid for/seen elsewhere.
Oops, my bad-I didn’t watch the Mena talk. I’ve only seen Mena play, so I don’t really know much about him as a person (SFL kinda gave me a weird vibe, but nothing major). Honestly, I just prefer Broski, Idom, and Sajam since I’m more familiar with them. Plus, Mena isn’t really the hot topic right now-unlike Broski, who just snagged a CPT spot
I've seen mixed reports on this on Reddit before and it was described to basically, using your analytics, cost $151 due to the money made back from the ads on your own video, contributing back into the fund of what you're paying, e.g, promoted views watching ads on your video. I have no idea if this is right or not as I know like 1 person who's ever used this feature before when producing videos aside your channel so maybe you can tell me if that's right or not when you get your adsense breakdown at the end of the month that you paid for this during.
You should be receiving your paid view check in the mail in 6-8 weeks.

I might be wrong! I've heard other takes. My opinion on that was data that suggested that twitch turbo users or worth less than regular users who watch ads. I need to get more data on that info
That episode is the diamond standard if a fgc podcast
This is like if Batman broke his no-killing policy.
The funniest shit would be to run a campaign on this video
People have always said
Be proud to invest into yourself and what you believe in
But…. I always been iffy about promoting due to bots? Actually attracting real people 😅😅
Immagine watching a 9min stupid cat video in Brasil and a 3h ad video pops up, and you click it.. and you watch it!
as a creator myself i appreciate this look at the feature. ive never done it myself but now i know what im really investing in should i choose to do so
Brazil mentioned! 💖
Our studio did this when we released out documentary series (I believe we mostly did this for our trailer) but that was also something where the scale was really big and the audience was already built in because of our prior series. It's interesting to see what this is like for a creator that's an one person on a newer project!
Not at the end of the video yet but interesting topic Brian, and the results are definitely some interesting data points to consider and learn from.
you should do another video or small update like this in the near future comparing the analytics from the promoted podcast MenaRD video and this video explaining why you did it and seeing if more people were "organically" interested in the explanation video.
Anecdotal obvious but I’m sure I can’t be the only one.
a lot of the episodes are in my when i have time category guess i will check this out tomorrow with how much you are proud of it.
i block the shit out of ads so just joined channel instead
alternate video title- a cool handsome man "labbing" youtube
I watched the entire interview. It was awesome.
This video is the ultimate way to pump the mena rd podcast some more
Since the twitter checkmark it’s not been the same
Sad to see hes Brian_Ad now
As an aspiring content creator, I needed this exact video, thank you Brian F 🙏🏽🙏🏽
You mentioned English being your audience's primary language but don't underestimate the power of Spanish subtitles, especially for a promotion effort into NA/SA. Though I image that would be quite expensive for a 3 hour long video if you don't go with AI translated subs.
As a fellow content creator, this was very helpful. Can't say I expected to get this rundown from you, but I'm glad it did! 🙏🦖🤘
Long live the Trash Talk initiative 🔥
21:00 What is the frame data on paid ads?
It could just be simply, "it's Christmas time and people get busy."
But yeah, it's good stuff. Sorry to see the traction being so slippery.
Whenever I see you upload to the podcast series, I go on spotify and download the new episode so I can listen to it in the car. Maybe people doing that means less people watching on RUclips and that's why it looks like its reaching less people
It didn't take off because when people see any video any longer than 30 minutes, they definitely won't even give it a chance
Honestly a great use of money. That was the best Trash Talk I’ve seen by far.
18:23 I actually can say that I have. I saw an ad last year give or take and it was for a channel going through EVERY PS1 game in alphanumeric order and I was really intrigued by it.
It worked even better because now i'll watch every episode
BRAZIL MENTIONED!!! WE LOVE YOU BRIAN F!
I was wondering why they where pushing that video on me so hard..it stayed at the top of my feed one whole day
Hello from the Browse Features!
Love this. My son has a youtube channel. He has 1.3k subs making animations and ganeplay videos. Im really interested in this side of it.
"You guys watch this?" °immediately gets ad°
Yes Brian. Yes I do...
Cheers.
I didn't even finish the Mena episode...
I admit i skipped that Mena video, length scared me away.
Brian with the yt frame data 👌
I got baited by Birdie image, maybe there will be some sf5
Ayyyyy Brazil mentioned. Brazillian viewer here 🫡
I’m assuming something counting as a view is similar to how previewing a video counts as a view (i.e. when hovering over a video it’ll start playing and count as being viewed/show up in your watch history if done for a few seconds). So even just a bit of the ad will make it count as a view.
I didn’t watch that video.
Gotta admit, I didnt watch the MenaRD and Broski video on release because I had finals then. I did watch them after finals though
looks like its lifted straight outa facebook artist page promotion stuff
What a feel good story
the black spot on the left hand side , on the wall above the guitar. I thought it was on my phone screen. Nice accidentally troll Brian.
Actually, I've listened to the Mena episode, because it was mentioned in the Broski episode. And it got me interested enough to make me listen to it.
