  • It's mom's turn to do the Wheelchair for a Day Challenge! For this challenge, she goes around town and tries to get stuff done, in the wheelchair. She goes to the post office and to the violin store. How do they react! It's a lot harder than dad makes it look. There are a lot of wheelchair fails!

    That "I feel like I'm deceiving people"....don't feel bad...it's important...cuz this brings awareness. I personally feel odd when folks insist on holding door open and offerings of help when I clearly need help. When you been independent all your life...feels overwhelming to need help over what used to be simple stuff.

    • @AbleFamilyLife
      @AbleFamilyLife  6 лет назад

      That's so true. It can be hard to need help, but it does often give others joy to be able to help. :)

    I wish the guy I live with would do wheelchair for a day. He is always saying to me, " It's not that hard" when he really has no clue. I wish everyone would do that for 1 day. maybe then we as wheelchair users would get a bit more respect. lol. I love your videos. God bless you guys.

    I'm a wheelchair user and I love seeing your wheelchair challenges 😀. And I have a tip- if you have an oven with a door that opens downwards you can fully open it and use it as a worktop 😉😀. I often use the oven door when cooking and baking 😀

    Back when i was in college, me and another wheelchair student convinced the college to rent a bunch of wheelchairs for the day for students to see what it was like to use the wheelchair for a day. Mostly positive feedback . I don't think they did it again for liability reasons and someone complained about it being 'offensive' to pretend to be disabled ...but can't please everyone. One of the college faculty got stuck in the one cafeteria for hours trying to find someone to let him out on freight elevator ...the only way to get to the one cafeteria.

      What a great idea.
      I'm sure a lot of people learned a lot that day.
      But sadly, some people find it offensive even if it's being used as a 'teaching' situation.

    This was really interesting to watch, I didn't think about how difficult certain things would be or how differently some things would have to be done in a wheelchair.

    • @AbleFamilyLife
      @AbleFamilyLife  7 лет назад

      Glad you liked it. It is odd the things that are difficult that you don't even think about as an able bodied person.

    This was so much fun to watch! Too bad you didn't have a power chair for the trail-way faster! Although, as a power chair user, I will say that they come with their own challenges

    • @AbleFamilyLife
      @AbleFamilyLife  7 лет назад

      I think if Brian had a power chair the kids would be stealing it to go joy riding around the block every time he got out of it. :) Thanks for watching!

      Yes, Jarod is next in line for wheelchair for a day. Originally he said he wouldn't go out in public in the chair, but after seeing how much fun I had he's all set to go out and about shopping and such. Stay tuned. :)

      It is fun, but difficult spending the whole day in the chair. And it is very interesting how people look at you differently.

    Our post office has a counter for wheelchair accessible but I will say many times it has boxes on it.

      We should attach one to the chair that folds up or something.

    Lol the door deal would work. But next time or let your husband no he can carry a extra rope or I've made a set up were I can take up to 9 rods fishing or just 4. But I've got a pole set up I stick the rods in the pipes hole. But he can make on on his chair to walk the dogs and not hold or put a rope around you and tie there leash to your rope and you got both hands. But good thing y'all got kids to help. I use my chair alot when out. Don't need to at home I have alot of stuff to hold on to. But if I'm at a store for more than 10 min I need a rider. Can't stand that long I can do 20 but then I'm hurting so bad I hurt sitting more than 30 min and both legs go to sleep. Sometimes I wish I had no filling in my legs or lower back then it would be easier. But then I'm a big guy it's hard to move around when I'm in a chair I could never get out of a chair into a car or truck or onto my bed don't have the upper body. But hands off to people in a chair it's tuff. Thanks for the vidoe people need to see stuff like this to understand it's not easy and be nice to ones who are. God bless ya'll
