      All working together, and surprisingly not too much bickering between the kids :) ... no that that ever happens.

    An "Allen Wrench"! hahahaha!! It was interesting to watch and see how the hand controls work! I also hate painting the edges, it is so tedious!

      I think next time we paint a room we'll make the ceiling, walls and trim all the same color, to avoid the edging :(

    I have a John Deere lawn tractor knob on my van steering wheel.
    It was cheap and I found it at Lowe's😁

    I have a Question about the hand control? I have a family member that has cerebral palsy we have been looking in to a set of hand control for her to have as a backup if she needs to travel and rent a car. The hand controls she has lets her use her left hand to control the gas and brake. I seen you and your beautiful daughter put the steering wheel knob on the right side of the steering wheel so I think you are using your left hand to operate the hand control. Please let me know if I am right it looks like you are able to pull them to the left side of the and drive with your right . I asked my beautiful Nice how her hand control are set up and she explained to me she can drive better with her right are and do the petals controls with her left hand. She explained to me it has to do with her range of movement she a excellent driver going on 15 years. Thanks in advance for taking the time to answer our questions. We look forward to watching more of your videos of you and your beautiful family thank you for showing the world that people with mobility differences are able to live a wonderful life’s with just a few modifications. I was in a bad accident and lost the use of my leg for 18 months at that time no one was sure if I would ever get them back. My nice walked in my hospital room with her wrist crouches with her big beautiful smile and side you don’t need them I have never been able to use the ones I have . I have been blessed I am to walk again but when she told me that I knew that if she could still smile and be so productive in this world that I was really going to be alright. Thanks again for sharing your wonderful videos may God bless you and your beautiful family!!

      Hello! You are correct, the portable hand controls mount so that I use my left hand to do the gas and brake pedals, and my right hand for the steering knob. If this setup is good for your niece then these controls would work great for her. I don't think they could be mounted in reverse, to control pedals with your right hand. Thank you for sharing your story about your injury and about your niece and how she inspires you! It's amazing how resilient and strong people can be when faced with obstacles and challenges in life.

      Thanks, I'm glad to show others what types of adaptive equipment I use, although I use much. I'm very thankful that the technology exists for me and others that need it to help live normal lives.

    Haha Brian's Allen Wrench is correct. Love you guys. Glad you got some kit for the car. Good luck on the project. Looking forward to seeing the finished floor. Also is it rude to ask how you ended up T10

      Hopefully we'll have the floor done in a week or two, we'll probably do a wood laminate. I got paralyzed when I fell off of a roof when I was working construction. I don't mind at all when people ask me. We made a stop action Lego People reenactment, you can see it here ruclips.net/video/VCXVhCRkt2c/видео.html

    I wonder if I can get something like that through Medicaid while I have this hernia & whatever else it is that I have too which might have caused it. I still can't believe it took nine months as it is for them to diagnose the hernia & now I'm looking at a year with this problem. I have no money left. I'm probably screwed with an enterocele/prolapse. I'm so scared of surgery as I had one on my nose as a kid.

      Thanks! It was news to me too when I first got paralyzed, I figured I would have to have someone drive me around all the time. There was a whole new world of adaptive equipment and mobility aids to learn about and choose from. I'm hoping our channel can inform and entertain at the same time. Thanks for watching and commenting :)

    I have to get one of these now, but I am curious how would you use the indicators if one hand is on the wheel and the other on the hand control?

  • @chaddouglas9263

    How do you like using the portable hand controls? I've only had the kind that bolts to the steering column. Do they secure nicely, I've always been afraid of them not working properly. Now that you have had some time use them, any problems you have had etc? I'm thinking of ordering a set for my new car (well new to me)

    • @AbleFamilyLife
      @AbleFamilyLife  6 лет назад

      These portable hand controls work well, but since they don't attach to the steering column, you have to really concentrate on keeping them centered over the pedals. There's a strap that goes over the steering column that helps somewhat, but the levers still can float side to side. I had the permanent hand controls installed a few months after making this video. The portable ones are good for temporary use, but I wasn't comfortable using them long term.

    When you're traveling by yourself, what do you do with the wheelchair ?

    • @AbleFamilyLife
      @AbleFamilyLife  5 лет назад

      I pull the wheelchair up into the car and into the passenger seat; that way, I can reach it to get it out when I need it 😊 We have a wheelchair transfer challenge video that shows that process if you'd like to watch that! ruclips.net/video/eGln23OBbaA/видео.html&t

    Hello. You helped me with your review of the Quokka bag a couple of years ago. I've been thinking of purchasing some hand controls, myself. I've been considering the set you're using in this video and another set. I was wondering if the set in this video, can they be used WITHOUT the arm for the gas pedal?? I'm a T-11 incomplete paraplegic and still have pretty good use of my right leg as far as pushing the gas pedal and letting off. It's only when I'm transferring from the gas pedal to the brake pedal that I have a little trouble because the brake pedal sits up higher. Any help or advice would be much appreciated. Thank you.

    • @AbleFamilyLife
      @AbleFamilyLife  6 лет назад +1

      Hi! Yes you can remove the part that connects to the gas pedal and just use the brake control, it has a nice padded handle and is really sturdy.

    • @Geo76er
      @Geo76er 6 лет назад

      Thank you. That's all I was needing to know. I'm probably gonna order that set now.. Take care!

    Hello guys could you tell me which are the steps that I have to follow to install professional permanent hand control on my car

    • @AbleFamilyLife
      @AbleFamilyLife  4 года назад +1

      Hello! You should look for a Mobility Equipment provider that is a member of NMEDA (www.nmeda.com National Mobility Equipment Dealers Association). They are most likely the best qualified and trained to do a safe installation. If you're near any of the many Superior Van and Mobility locations, I can recommend them first hand since I've had great results from them on my vehicles.

    What are hand things and. How do you use it

    • @AbleFamilyLife
      @AbleFamilyLife  6 лет назад

      I use one hand to press a lever connected to the brake and gas separately, and the other hand to steer.

  • @RichardCheshire
    @RichardCheshire 7 лет назад

    Those hand controls are drastically different from the ones that I have, are they easy to use?

    • @AbleFamilyLife
      @AbleFamilyLife  7 лет назад

      Now that I've used them for 600 miles driving out to the Indy 500, I can say that they work very well. My previous portable hand control was a push pull type that was too easy to push the gas while braking if you had your hand too far to the right. These new ones have the gas pedal more isolated from the brake and I find them much more stable and safer feeling. I definitely prefer the permanently installed ones though.

    • @RichardCheshire
      @RichardCheshire 7 лет назад

      The push pull type are the ones that we use (me, my girlfriend and my mother). It has a handy switch to control the indicators which we can't live without, I'll put up a video sometime soon when I get started.
      At this present moment, my car is in the shop and I am using lynx hand controls for the first time, which are similar to those in the video. It is a very surreal experience I must say, I feel as though I need a third arm to drive properly but it's been a good learning experience too.
