Alternative careers to medicine | Pursuing a non-clinical career in digital health tech as a doctor

  • I had a pretty good idea of how my career would unfold in medicine because there is a defined path you need to follow to complete your training and practice. When I decided I wanted to work in digital health technology, I had no idea where to turn and how to do it. It was an unconventional career path to take as a doctor, and I had to figure out a way to pave my own path, which was challenging and risky!
In this video, I share how I maintained focus and perspective even after many rejections and feeling like a failure and how I hustled my way to a career in digital health technology and found a niche where I could provide value.
*This video is dedicated to my mom (the real MVP), who believes in me more than I believe in myself.

I'm currently a medical student and I really love the health tech space too. I definitely want to go down this path too and I'm currently considering getting a bachelor's degree in business or a tech-related bachelor's (on top of my MD) to get my foot in the door. Thanks for the amazing content, there aren't a lot of creators who talk about this!

Hello Amie, I'm a medical student who is also in love with health tech. Problem is I seem to be the only person in my school environment who even knows what health tech is.
I've been researching master's degrees in medicine that will favor a health tech career and it's been one dead end after another. Have you decided on what you want to do?

    • @a.__mie7544

@@ojoosama Hi there! No I have not yet decided on what exactly I want to do. Unfortunately it‘s not really common for doctors to want to break into this industry yet so the options are rather limited. My medical school offers an intro to AI course once a week for six months which I am currently attending this year. Also I signed up for a local AI conference my uni is hosting so I‘m hoping I can network there. I think it‘s important to get as much knowledge on the subject you can, maybe even some qualifications, to show future employers that you‘ve got experience in the tech field not just in medicine. Because tbh I don‘t think health tech companies will have many positions for doctors who „only“ hold a medical degree… I‘m also currently working on my dissertation so now is not the time for me but I will for sure look into getting some sort of tech qualification in the future. Hope this helps in any way? Wish you the best!

When looking on LinkedIn, it seems like all the higher executive positions and positions held in the health sector of FAANG companies are held by MDs. I’m a little torn :/

Hi Keshin, some people in tech make more than MDs. Just like in medicine it depends on what you specialize in and how good you are at what you do. I know people who finished their residency and people who didn't. It's really about having a vision of what you want your career to look like, setting goals, and taking actionable steps to achieve them. Feel free to message me @drlemd on IG.
