    The Tau always got their ion tech second hand. This isn’t a retcon in the way you seem to think. They got it from the demiurg.

    • @zetanax1041
      @zetanax1041 Год назад +10

      "One particularly fruitful alliance was with the SrrykTok Brotherhood of the Demiurg. Meticulously cultivated by the Water Caste of the cosmopolitan Oal'yth Sept many decades earlier, they were able to negotiate the procurement of Ion Cannon technology, a significant advance that was quickly applied to Kass'l gunships where it was believed it would serve the Greater Good most effectively."

    • @toferkrz946
      @toferkrz946 Год назад +14

      Not always, but since 5th ed IIRC. Also it was stated that they got the basis of their ion tech from the Demiurg but were slowly improving and perfecting it, as they are want to do. There wasn't this inane plot twist that they got a dumbed down, inferior and defective version that they can't do anything with while the Votann are laughing their beards off at how dumb the Tau are. It undermines the central trope of Tau ingenuity and incessant progress for the sake of a cheap joke and making the new kid on the block look cooler at the expense of an established faction, like a Mary Sue fanfic character that's inexplicably better than everyone else at everything for no reason.
      If they wanted Votann to feel like an advanced Dark Age of Tech civilization, they should have given them a lot more of the exotic Dark Age tech like Volkite or Photon guns or other weird and wacky stuff instead of just leaning into star alloy thunder hammers, unobtainium-powered boltguns, autocannons with magic bullets or better-than-yours ion and rail gun +1. It detracts from the iconic feel of other factions in a parasitic way instead of establishing their own identity. Not to mention that it's simply lazy. It's especially baffling when you consider that they already avoided that particular pitfall with Admech, which, aside from a handful of Cognis weapons, had all kinds of wonderfully wacky weapon systems thought up for them making for a completely unique faction identity, despite the temptation of an easy solution in just giving them superior kinds of bolt, las, melta and plasma weapons,

    Hegemony sounds like "hey jimminy" in pronunciation. Chef: I also want to see Chaos Dwarfs er, Chaos Squats. The "mad Votann" sounds like a great lore reason to bring out Chaos Squats to have the darker side of LoV. For me, I have waited since 1992 or so to play Squats again. My best friend died serving in Iraq and he played Squats and Black Templars. I play both of them in addition to my own armies in memory of Gus since he can't play them. There is definitely a reference in the lore I've seen so far to them being totally happy to strip mine planets while they are occupied. It said they might sometimes negotiate an evacuation if they are feeling kind. Don't agree on them being entirely good and moral though. They read as Kin-supremacists to me. If you're Kin, you're in. After listening to this, I see them as better Death Guard.
    -Both are slow, but they have a few fast units. However, The LoV have garenteed 3"advance and their fast unit has obsec.
    -They both have shorter range, but once you're in their range they slap. That being said, LoV slap a lot harder in general with their weapons. And that's without the judgment tokens.
    All in all, they are an area deny army. You DO NOT want to get near them.
    Now as far as the judgement tokens, first change I'd make is remove the 'counts as an unmodified 6' part of the rule. They can still auto wound, but that should nerf some of the bonuses you'd get for it. The other one is I'd remove a few of the ways to get them. Not sure which ones or how any, but I do feel that they get access to them way to fast.

    Wait, they have good relationships with the Aeldary? Have GW really skipped out on one of the more Grimdark fitting Dwarf tropes? It would've been super easy! The Leagues really like to strip mine resource rich planets and the Asuryani (as well as the Exodites) really want to protect the maiden worlds. Also the Aeldari trick everyone and their mom and the Votann are data storage devices which are able to record and communicate every instance of that. So they could serve as sort of a book of grudges, which REALLY wouldn't benefit the Aeldari!

      Yeah I don't like how safe and sanitary their lore seems. But I don't think GWs newer lore output has been good for a while now. Everything onwards from the introduction of primaris marines has been highly questionable writing IMO. Some of the newer Necromunda lore might be the exception.

      Squats =/= Kyn. Leagues of Votann Kyn are genetic offshoots of Squats. But they are so far diverged from Squats as to be a completely different & alien, species.
      Besides, 'friendly' with Aeldari isn't saying much. For all we know LoV 'friendliness' could be even more tenuous than Aeldari.
      Mostly, I think it's about nailing down Squats =/= Kyn & therefore establish that Kyn are not tied to the Imperium in any way, shape or form.
