17:44 Dixon's take on how the Captain America Heroes Reborn stuff went down was that after Liefeld approved him he agreed to write the series with the assurance that it be period accurate (WWII) and he had researched and sent him several pictures of guns, uniforms, tanks and so forth to use as reference. After weeks of silence from Liefeld's end, he began to receive pages back where Rob completely disregarded everything he wrote and decided to just draw his own thing. Dixon told him to take his name off it and he was taking back the story. When Liefeld's studio asked Dixon to give a reason for the press, Dixon told them to come up with something. They then sought out Jeph Loeb to see if he could pick up the pieces and make sense of what Rob had already drawn. The story they came up with for the split for was that they were disappointed in Dixon's story, which was naturally not to his liking.
Loeb's "This is Rob's Show" comment was a good indication of "Don't blame me for this. I'm just the guy coming in to play clean up." Loeb only stuck around for five issues as a co-writer with Liefeld and one of those issues had a third writer, only credited for one other item at Marvel (promotional news magazines). Rob only stuck around for one more issue after that, in which he was the sole writer.
    Take it as you will.
With regard to the Generation X movie and potential TV series, apparently Fox was ready to pick up the show for the following season, but Marvel's television production side decided they wanted to shop it around in syndication instead. After the better part of a year trying to sell it in syndication and getting no interest, they went back to Fox and were told they already filled their schedule for the next year and were no longer interested.
As for Scott McDaniel, if the internet is to be believed, he appears to have a kickstarter project with Tony Bedard as of this summer.

I agree about Ghost In The Shell, it's a phenomenal film. I also think Satoshi Kon's work stands up to live action films as far as storytelling. Perfect Blue is a classic.

The Dark Saga by Iced Earth was a concept metal album that told the story of Spawn :D McFarlane also drew the covers for several Albums and Singles by KoRn

I always remember that Korn album. The minute I saw the faces, I knew it was Todd's work

That Iced Earth album cover was not only signed off by McFarlane, it was an entire concept album based on Spawn

The cover art is an original piece by McFarlane. The band met with Todd, asked him to do an original of Spawn for a cover, and then decided to do a whole concept album on Spawn. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Dark_Saga#Cover_art
FWIW, Iced Earth is a renowned metal band, with a huge following.

I love these Wizard retrospectives. Im basically the same age as Ed Piskor, but just a fan and not an artist, so it's cool to see an actual creative person's look and opinions on the same things I looked at as a fan

Maximum Press was Liefeld's way to publish and not share revenue with Image. Every Image book shared profits to run the company, but Liefeld was contributing a lot more money because he was publishing a ton of titles in comparison to Larsen and McFarlane doing mostly 1 title each. Its really interesting and I can see why Rob started Maximum P.

Can you guys review any Warren Ellis? Planetary and Transmetropolitan preferably. Some of the best books I’ve ever read. Haven’t seen it on the channel.

Great stuff! Brings back a LOT of memories of a better time. Thank you.
Have you guys covered BATMAN : THE CULT yet? Wrightson art and if I remember correctly, Bats hacks a bunch of people up with a hatchet under the influence of drugs.
True Faith by Ennis is worth a peek as well.

Yeah, I namedropped The Cult before as well, 'cause I'd be very interested in their take, specially in Bill Wray's color which is pretty damn wild and makes Wrightson's art look like it never looked before (or after).

I’m not a big superhero guy, but The Cult has always been one of my favorite Batman stories. Riding into the city in the jacked up monster truck with a tranquilizer dart equipped turret gun 😂

Re Scott's Superman Adventures story, the closest in the mainstream might be Cary Bates' story in Action 489-491 (one of my first issues was 490) where the light from Krypton reaches Earth and Superman watches Krypton explode again (I haven't read either in years so I apologise if I am off the mark!) - love these reviews btw

i'm in the same age as Jim so I'd lost touch with wizard and comics at this point too. too busy adjusting to university in fall of '96 and going through studio art classes. those early years though, i was always reading it and the drawing tutorials definitely influenced me. still have a tin with all the cards that came with the magazine. the old magazines are somewhere in my dad's house, no idea their condition though.

Ed you’ve gotta check out that Pressed Tongues 3 issue mini series by Dave Cooper. It is completely insane drawing and a bonkers story. Might be my favorite Dave Cooper ever. And it might be his first Fantagraphics work, and definitely kicks off his tenure there right! It’s hard to find the issues for cheap but well worth the money. The other rare ones are A Big Someplace and Chronic Idiocy, of which I’m still missing one issue of each.

Have you ever covered any of the special ‘guest editor’ issues of Wizard? I think it was an April Fools or Halloween issue and Dr Doom comments throughout….you probably can guess who the Mort of the Month was.

More strong anime: The Girl Who Leapt Through Time and Hosoda's other work as well as Your Name. Though I do agree that generally the work just barely misses the target.

Where American audiences miss the vibe in animated films is usually in not watching it in its original language. Chopped up possibly edited and possibly translated wierd. Ghost in the shell literally has no wasted movements imo. But then again, I've never seen the dub so idk what it's missing.

Gen 13 video game did come out for the Play Station. Janky 3D with terrible textures, and poor controls. There was also an unreleased side scroller that you can find footage from on youtube
