  • Islamorada, Florida Keys Bleaching Update
This footage is to help document the bleaching event during the summer of 2023.
Cheeca Rocks footage is from mid September 2023, Alligator Reef footage is from mid August 2023.
I am not a scientist or marine biologist. I have done my best to communicate the facts as I know them, as clearly as possible. If there is any information that I have misrepresented, please feel free to message me or comment below.
This is a personal account of the bleaching event I witnessed in the Florida Keys that is still ongoing. I plan on doing another update in October 2023. Some experts in the field have told me that we should know more about the mortality of the coral and how much will survive once the water cools off, likely October or November.
Stay Tuned and Thanks for Watching.

Nice video Luke! This is the first hopeful/positive story I’ve heard about the recent coral bleaching. Hope things continue to recover. I’m the hero12 snorkeler you saw yesterday on your excellent tour that mentioned the HeroLabs firmwares from GoPro. You can do whatever you wish, but do suggest reading/watching a few videos about it. You can burn your name/email/phone into firmware memory so it’s always displayed every time the camera starts (does not depend on sdcard). You can enable motion capture, trail camera, scheduled recording, long form Timelapse, and newer cameras can get even more features (hero11 can shoot in LOG with a few tweaks, can increase bitrate above the standard 120Mbps to 200Mbps, change min/max shutter speeds, enabling wide gamut color, and more). Keep on making vids sir!

Great vid thanks for sharing! I have been free diving islamorada and same reefs since 2021. Im surprised last visit little over week ago I noticed coral bleaching at Cheeca Rocks. Idk if I missed this event you documented, I have not seen it that bad. I was concerned for the reefs as last summer there were loads of hot spots in the ocean. Not many dives this year as I do not get along with jellyfish and they have been out. Recently have visited Alligator, Davis, Pickles, Hens and Chickens reef. Im wondering though is it mostly dead what we’re seeing or is this how it looks here in FL? I see abundance of purple fans and branch corals. But the rock underneath it when u look closely seems to be dead and covered in algae.

The bleaching killed a ton of coral. Corals at cheeca took a hard hit. On a positive note, the soft coral like sea fans seem to have rebounded nicely!

Yea a lot of it did die and get covered in algae, unfortunately. I’ll do another update soon. Luckily a ton of coral restoration organizations are working on recovery and solutions. You can look into ICARE, MOTE and REEF if you’re wanting to contribute! Cheers!
