  • Bud n' Mary's Marina has partnered up with ICARE, MOTE Marine, and Keys Dives to work on a new coral growth project in the Florida Keys. Our reefs are in trouble and we are all hoping that ICARE's and MOTE Marine's Coral growth projects can help bring the reefs back to the same state they were a few decades ago! In this episode I learn how they plant the coral and then head out with Key Dives and plant some at Alligator Reef! If you want to help out check out www.icareaboutcoral.com or reach out to Key Dives. You can go on one of their dive trips and plant coral yourself!

Cool to see you getting involved and promoting this program! One of the things I really enjoyed back when I was bumming around in the Keys was the amount of cool things you can just stumble onto...whether it's helping restore coral, or joining a literal treasure hunt (grey area there... but way past the statute of limitations), or even hiring on to run a barge of appliances and other merchandise over to Bimini.

On our island we grew the staghorn coral suspended mid water first then we planted it. It grows surprisingly fast like that.

Team up with sailfish and shark tagging. Would love to see the process of that and how they track them up and down the coast.

You know I declined the free trip, but I could totally do this! At 61 yrs old, no scuba dives, but now that is something I know I'd like. Awesome Nick!

Education is key. We were diving off alligator reef. Getting ready to drop the mooring bouy and leave. A boat threw their anchor in right on top of the reef. The dive boat captain notified the other boat and offered our mooring buoy. The captain of the other vessel pulled up anchor to move where we were and pulled up a huge sea fan snd some other corals with his anchor. What you are doing to save the reef is admirable but if you have people destroying the coral by dropping anchors on top of it, it will never get restored. Awareness of the fragile nature of corals is a key component to its return and ultimate survival.

Good for you all. I won’t get political or weird it is great to see sportsmen / women and volunteers doing what is right.
I live in Michigan and I and so many other hunters are natural conservationists and do what we can to provide wildlife the best resources.
If social media (not yours) would trade in hate and division and concentrate on good we would all be better.

Where is heck is the Florida key the father of this coral reef restoration? I remember an old guy with a white beard in the Keys who was doing this along time ago. He seems to have been canceled. I can't find any of the videos of him that used to be on RUclips! Where the heck is he? To respect for this pioneer on RUclips... Where is my coral reef inspiration now?

I love your channel and everything you stand for. but I am a concerned with the vocabulary of the young lady 6.22 in. Her words have made me think that the coral is not natural to that eco system, as it it has been mutated. I hope this is not the case.
