When you gaze upon the hardware of the new Chromecast with Google TV (Chromecast from here on out in this review) it is easy to see the basic influence of its predecessors. A circular-ish dongle with an HDMI cable protruding from one end and a spot for power in the other. As a matter of fact, it looks a lot like they simply took the 3rd-gen Chromecast, flattened it out a bit, and rounded off the edges to make the new Chromecast.
All similarities aside, however, this familiar-feeling dongle does quite a bit more for $49 than any of its 4 older versions ever imagined, and it does two specific things we want to focus on today that really set this Chromecast apart from the rest. Those two things - the inclusion of a remote and a proper user interface - also happen to make this the Chromecast for just about anyone out there looking for a streaming media solution.

Very nice explanation! We have been using Chromecast for a very long time and when this one came out with Google TV, I wasn't quite sure why I would want this. But wow! This is so much better! Now we are keeping apps all on the chromecast and you're not finding your phone to switch apps and then connect to the chromecast. It is so much better and easier to use! Also, even though we have a smart TV, the apps on the smart TV are limited and not that many we are interested in. The Chromecast with Google TV gives us so much more and better content to watch!
I bought one for myself and one for my daughter. It's great! The remote is what makes it the best. It turns tv and sound bar on. I have a roku ultra also, but I prefer the chromecast.

You could do more on it. Stream, play emulated games. Drop my cable subscription and Netflix. Subscribe to an IPTV which gives me everything for the price of 3 months worth compared to one month from cabe company which is limited to a package. And all the Apps you want. The others are just limited to what they can do.
They way its explained is awesome. Each word pronounced in best way as everybody can understand it, this was really amazing
The controller is key because I think casting from the phone isn't as convenient as it appears. For example, rewinding and fast forwarding is a troublesome and Google home and a lot of apps don't make it easy. I'm glad the controller is here.

Did you buy the Google TV stick and can not find the typical Google Play Movie library view? In order to get that view, where you can browse and search through movie genres etc. just push the assistent button on the Google TV remote and say: "Open Google Play Movies". Thats it!
It's the best because it isn't just a Chromecast it's an Android TV box, it has bluetooth, that was the key upgrade for me after using 2nd gen chromecast for so long.
Edit: What I don't like about the remote is that there are no dedicated Play/Pause and Skip buttons, otherwise it is everything you need.
Why would you need dedicated buttons? Don't you like the navigation over the wheel?
@@iclonethefirst it's easier to press once on pause than to tap twice on the main button. The remote has dedicated buttons for RUclips and Netflix but not play and pause... It's only a minor annoyance though

There is one thing that Google needs to fix IMMEDIATELY!! Google advertises that this device will find shows, movies, etc. based on your personal preferences. However, until they allow accounts to be switched on the main menu, this SUCKS for other people in the household. My Chromecast with Google TV will find my preferences, but not my spouse's! There is NO WAY TO SWITCH USERS ON THE MAIN HOME SCREEN!!! FIX THIS GOOGLE!!!!!
@@carerforever2118 Yeah but how does that solve the OP's issue with the curated suggestions only being applicable to one person. There needs to be a way to switch from one account to another to personalize the sugegstions.

I have a Sony TV that runs Android TV with Chromecast built in. I like the simplicity of the Chromecast remote vs Sony's or Xfinity's remote. Can I really replace these other remotes with the new Chromecast?
The Chromecast remote won't be able to navigate any menus of your TV or cable box aside from switching TV inputs. It will, however, be able to turn everything on/off and control the volume of your TV/sound system.

Always appreciate your reviews. You're clearly a fan of Chrome and all-things Chrome but I feel like you do a great job of keeping it real and as unbiased as you can.
We're getting this for my mum's partner for Christmas! He's a little too technology shy to work out how to cast from a smartphone, so I think that the remote will be much simpler for him to use (with my help setting it up, of course!) :-)
Two things I've noticed:
1. There is no dedicated Google Podcasts app; you can request podcasts to play through Google Assistant, but that's it. Very odd.
2. The sound (and possibly the picture) is definitely inferior to Apple TV.
I hope these can be fixed with software, maybe along with the Stadia update. But I prefer Google TV''s UI to Apple TV, so it's not a bad start.

All I wanted to do was be able to control the TV with my voice after I got an alarm clock with a Google assistant. I saw that the Chromecast with Google TV was a new products I picked one up. Wow! I’ve had a 4K TV for awhile already but something about this little gadget makes everything look much better. I don’t know about all the specs but my eyes seem like I’m looking into the future. The colors and picture is nothing like I’ve seen before. It’s an awesome device.

After using many android tvs for years, in my opinion, you can't go wrong with a modern chromecast. Let's be honest, for the price, they are pretty good because they just work. It's compatibility that Apple has never had access to over all platforms. That being said, I have also owned two NVIDIA shields and there is a reason they are three times the price and I won't hesitate to buy the next one because they are just cool. Will probably buy the Google tv for my parents over the cheaper Chinese made Xiaomi. (Even though I own Xiaomi stuff and think they are pretty decent generally) I highly recommend this box for the user that just wants things to work and doesn't need the extra oomph for people streaming Dolby Atmos over Plex with 50gb+ Bluray movies...then I really recommend NVIDIA shield Pro in 2020. For normal Netflix use, I can't imagine much of a difference though. This new box has great specs really. Also I like to install the apple tv screensaver 'aerial' on NVIDIA shield and set it as my screensaver and then program it in to the multi programmable buttons and you have immersive screensavers at a touch of a button. Pretty sure you could install aerial on Chromecast tv as well too ;)

I'm looking to upgrade to a 4K TV with Roku built in as that's what my family has known how to use for years now, but I'll for sure be adding this to my game room TV as an extra option.

1. Can I connect my BT headphones to this Cromecast with Google TV?
1.1 If yes. Is it possible to connect 2 or more BT headphones to hear the audio through them at the same time? (Like on laptops, ...)
2. Is there an app to use Philips Hue-Sync like it's possible on the Android smartphone/tablet with e.g. EssentialHue?

I am currently using a firetv and it just turns the screen black instead of letting it turn into standby, it is annoying
So, just purchased one of these GTVWCC today, only to find out that it doesn't do auto frame rate switching? So, if you set the frame rate to 60Hz in the advanced settings, any kind of movie you try to play, will only playback at that frame rate, and not the correct 24Hz, which make judder in the content. I find this incredibly insane that it doesn't do this. All other streaming devices automatically adjust frame rate. Anybody else noticing this?
I have been a huge Harmony remote fan for a very long time. You can connect the Chromecast with Google TV to the Harmony hub. Then add an activity that includes that device and your Harmony remote will control the Chromecast. You will need to customize a few buttons like home and back. You cannot talk to the Harmony remote, but if you have the Google home mini you can route your voice commands through it. I am back to one remote. I hated the Google remote because it could only power down either my TV or my Soundbar, not both.

Great video, exactly the kind of perspective I needed. One question though and hopefully not as odd as it sounds .. Can you use the remote to make a comment on a RUclips vid, e.g. maybe via assistant? Let's say I watch a future chrome unboxed video after I get one of these, I just may not comment as I have to get my phone out, to to RUclips history, then type the comment ... Seems tedious

Don't bother buying Chromecast Google TV if your TV has Input screen that scrolls through..the remote doesn't have a enter or select button programmed into so the input button will only scroll through the inputs and cannot select the input. Other than that, the Google TV Chrimecast is good.

Got one but already had a Firestick . I liked the Google remote and the USB port on the dongle compared to Firestick that didn't have that connector but, I sold it to a co worker for this reason ...
Google tv Chromecast doesn't have a web browser installed . I should've guessed the reason why and held off on buying one until Android 12L comes out for tablets , I'm assuming it'll make it just as good for tv screens running the chrome web browser .
Once that happens , I may get another one .

I've side loaded the stadia app and it works. It is quite slow and a bit cumbersome to get through the UI but once you are in the game everything works well
Stadia needs a firmware push through Google Home app, to get things going, that's all it needs.
@@jonomacd Y, I know. But I saw some testers having bigger issues in die Stadia Home Screen. The gaming works perfect, but the app itself isnt optimized.
So Ill just wait until thats done and then I have a better experience^^

I have a Roku 4K TV and the sole reason for this purchase (Chromecast) was to be able to watch Google Play movies in 4K, because the Roku Google Play app only supported HD, despite it being an app on a 4K TV.
I've had it for about a month. I have YTTV and the integration is great. The only thing that I hate is the remote. I don't understand why the volume buttons are on the right side. It's not a smartphone / tablet.
Also, it buffers A LOT. I have fiber and the router is only about 100 ft away. Chromecast shows that the wifi is strong. My Fire Stick 4K occasionally buffered on YTTV, but not like with this. It's frustrating.

The reason a classic Chromecast doesn't work in my home is because other people want to control what is on television after it has already been streamed. They want to swap channels, stop something and start something else, and go back to what was one. You can't do that with a classic Chromecast unless you were the original caster AND you've got the right app on your smartphone. So a guest without RUclips TV cannot use RUclips TV on my tv unless they download the app AND have a subscription. With the remote anyone in the room can pick up the remote and control any content available on my Chromecast.
I have one and I love the UI so much I installed the launcher on my Nvidia Shield TV Pro too and it works great! 👍 so basically I now have a Chromecast with Google TV and a Chromecast Pro with Google TV 😂
I have had issues with the NVIDIA, does side to the NVIDIA using 5 year old hardware I guess.
I've had one a few weeks now and can honestly say I was sceptical given Google's previous launches of recent products e.g. Slate, Buds, Pixel 4, Stadia etc. But credit where credit is due they nailed it. It's the best £60 I've spent this year. I got my girlfriend one who has no interest in tech and she loves it too. I just wish all recent Google products were this good.
I love using my voice with the smart assistant (speakers)... I've already gotten used to using my voice for turning off . Turning off the tv... Casting Netflix / Disney plus etc. The remote would be a great addition. I wish it had more than 4GB though. But we can cast many apps so I'll only need to install very few apps. We'll see!!
I own two of them on two TVs. Amazing, agree with Robby. Works well with my RUclipsTV and RUclips Premium (wish it had a RUclipsTV button instead of Netflix) Like the on-off button more than I thought I would, lol. MLB and NFL apps, too. It s awesome! It’s the Chromecast for everyone.

Got one last week and absolutely love it. Had a Fire TV cube which was great but am dropping Prime soon. It’s like they took Fire TV design and cleaned it up and super charged it. Only complaint is I’m not too happy with the remote. Seems flimsy and light. Wish it was a bit bigger and volume keys were more pronounced. For $50 you can’t beat it.
I have three issues with this Chromecast:
1) The remote's finishing is a "matte" finishing so it scratches easily. I have the white variant and scratches are visible.
2) The main screen UI sometimes freezes when I turn it on. I have to unplug it and then it starts to work.
3) The remote's volume buttons are sometimes hard to reach ... And I don't have small hands.
Other than these three things, I am enjoying it.
To me, none of these issues are an actual problem.
I didn't have any issues with scratching the remote yet. It feels very nice, and to me the volume buttons are quite easy to reach.
And my Chromecast did never freeze, so maybe it's just a issue with your own Chromecast.
I really love it and enjoy watching RUclips and Netflix on it, even playing some games when I'm bored.
Yep remote get scratches easily but other problems like freezing UI and remote button reachability is not issue on my unit
Loving mine. Coming Fire tv and cheap android boxes. Like that content is all put together with the Ui. Found a Usb C hub with gig ethernet that works but one of usb thumb sticks caused issues with freezing and black screens after formatting. Took the stick out now fine. Loving matching Dynamic range content with my Qled too. Great job Google
I got this for my mum who isn't tech inclined and she loves it. Its easy for to just talk to Google to get to where she needs.
How does it compare to my Apple TV of the 4th generation? Would the Chromecast be an upgrade? Haven't got a 4k TV yet.
I have the basic Google chrome cast that you mention and you need to use a phone or iPad to stream .. I am not using a smart tv , so this gets my TV hooked up to internet ,. Can you tell me if this unit would work as you describe, with a tv that is not a smart tv .
I wish you could simply buy the remote to use with the "older" chrome casts. I just got a Stadia... Am I supposed to have two chrome casts? Seems silly.

So I have Firesticks with remotes on all my TVs but got this free and researching it. The whole casting from a device thing doesn't interest me as my TV watching is separate from what I enjoy on my devices. With this new one that has a remote and interface, do I still have to use the google home app on a device? I'm not sure I'll see the value of this for me.

I prefer the look at my phone and press the cast button method. How does the Google T.V. handle multi Google accounts? e.g. My wife and kids have their own Google accounts and subscription services that they use. Do we have to log into our Google accounts each time to be able to use our subscribed services? Sharing is a nice idea but in practice I can see it being an issue. The Amazon music and video algorithms will start recommending me modern pop music and bad comedy's when in actual fact I like rock and Sci-Fi for an example. The original Chromecast kept everyone's accounts and subscriptions segregated.
Holding off for two reasons...
1. We have Roku on other TVs and love being able to plug headphones into the remote. Anything like that with the Chromecast?
2. Can you set up profiles with the Chromecast? With my young daughters watching so much of their stuff I would hate to turn on my Chromecast only to be fed a barrage of suggestions for their shows and videos. Profiles would solve that.
It is possible to pair other remotes to this Chromecast. It uses bluetooth for the pairing. If you can find a remote that will pair and has a headphone jack you are in luck.

I liked it, but it didn't have all the apps we use. It's not able to use Beach Body, Frndly TV, or Weather Nation apps. So until I can use those things, it's back to my Roku Ultra.
I love the new chromecast, however I have an issue when I use RUclips from it I get a black screen and no content and had freezing doing certain things. Sure this will be patched soon=
When setting up the google tv it asked if I wanted to pause the search history or pause the history & I didn’t click none of them I found on youtube how to unpause saved history but how do I unpause search history ? Where do I go ?

It's exactly what I want except i want to use Stadia as well. Yes I know it can be side loaded but the fact that it doesn't work out the box or officially supported until early next year is extremely disappointing. I'll probably just get a stadia with Chromecast ultra in the mean time then move the Chromecast ultra somewhere else in the house. Still a bad move I feel on Google's part
Always wondered, do these have any way to browse the internet with Chrome (ideally with a mouse)? If so, it would definitely be able to replace the laptop hooked up to the TV for the parents.
You can get a usb - c adapter to power the device and put external peripherals like mouse and keyboard.
It has a browser, but it is never gonna be as powerful as a laptop so it can only browse some social media apps or streaming services.

Not sure I see a point to this if you have a smart TV all the apps are on my TV but I gave this a go and whilst it worked fine it stopped my TV working properly - it would not switch back to normal TV mode, until I unplugged the thing. I guess if you have a TV without 'smart' ability then this would be useful but who has one of those? Can you even buy one?

Not much of an upgrade from standard smart tv. I recommend NVIDIA shield if you want a much better UI and performance but it is 3 times the price. If you have a smart tv already, it's definately not worth the upgrade on my opinion as a ex Google fanboy
Yes. The apps in smart TV's are often "lite" versions with limited capability.
Is there no ambient mode anymore where it just keeps displaying the pictures of my Google Photos album. I reealy liked that. It would be sad if this was gone tbh.
Yes there is. Goto to settings and turn on ambient mode. After a reasonable timeout period it switches from the Google TV interface to ambient mode.

Downloading iptv services and third party movie apps makes it so much better.
It's better then apple tv, I moved this to my Sony A8H, I like this better then the android on that tv it's so good and much more in tune in what you want to watch.

Chromecast remotes are RF remotes (radio frequency). Not IR (infrared) IR Remotes need line of sight to work correctly, RF remotes can be in another room altogether.

Since it has to be plugged in to the wall for power (not into the TV USB), if you stream something and turn off your TV, will the content continue to stream? I made this mistake with a ROKU and ran up my internet usage to the next tier because the ROKU continued streaming 24 hours a day. That's why my ROKU and Chromecast are powered by my TV.
No. The HDMI input will indicate to the Chromecast to stop.

Why my Chromecast doesn't show my movies and shows tab?
Chromecast with google tv is good but FULL OF BUGS I cannot screen mirror alternate websites with third parry screencasting apps.(comes in buggy) and for some reason, Amazon Prime video App cannot play movies. Messege says:Problem occured cannot play video. Device needs alot of updating.

No that would literally be a waste a money this is if you have multiple or plan to subscribe to many different ones

Just one. You can add additional accounts, not sure what that gains you, the recommendations are based on the primary account only.

Three things this device needs to be the perfect streaming / media machine (In my opinion):
1. Option to adjust / remove overscanning (many older, still capable TV's don't have this option natively)
2. Full Stadia support (Still rocking my CCU because of that)
3. Logitech Harmony support.
i had to return mine. I want a blur or pink but never available when I want to order. I stop by at my local bestbuy for a white but I had to return it. Not liking it
