Student has very, very good accuracy, intonation and overall technique. He just needed to find more musicality in a technically difficult piece such as this one, which he eventually did . Bravo
This guy is WAY too heavy in the beginning, as many people are. This is a hybrid piece "Waltz-Scherzo" - but the waltz has to take priority. Waltz is not a heavy dance, it is a light ballroom dance! When I studied this piece, this is what my teacher, who was from the Oistrakh Russian school, told me. Listen to any of the best recordings of it and they're not scrubbing it out or using an otherwise heavy bow stroke in the beginning. There is PLENTY of time for it later on towards the end, particularly in the coda as the dance ends and it's not quite so "waltz" anymore, it's developed into more of a Russian dance. And where do we hear a REAL Russian dance?! In Tchaikovsky's immediately next work, the finale of the Concerto!!
Wonderful teacher! Very insightful.
