  • Masterclass with Professor Miriam Fried in which they work Tchaikovsky's Valse-scherzo in C major op. 34 with the student Rubén Mendoza. This masterclass held at the Escuela Superior de Música Reina Sofía. Madrid 12/01/2012.
    Student: Rubén Mendoza
    Accompanying pianist: Vadim Gladkov
Venue: Escuela Superior de Música Reina Sofía, Madrid (Spain) 12/01/2012
    P. I. Tchaikovsky: Valse-scherzo for solo violin and orchestra in C major op 34 (arrangement for violin and piano)
    Abstract:
In this lecture excerpt, Professor Miriam Fried talks about bow strikes, hemiolas, harmony, and articulation. When we have a long chord (as in this case of a dominant 7th) we have to give all the intensity at the end. it is necessary to distinguish between what is merely accompaniment or what is thematic material, and make it stand out. The articulation of the notes has to be played always in groups to give sense to the music.

Student has very, very good accuracy, intonation and overall technique. He just needed to find more musicality in a technically difficult piece such as this one, which he eventually did . Bravo

This guy is WAY too heavy in the beginning, as many people are. This is a hybrid piece "Waltz-Scherzo" - but the waltz has to take priority. Waltz is not a heavy dance, it is a light ballroom dance! When I studied this piece, this is what my teacher, who was from the Oistrakh Russian school, told me. Listen to any of the best recordings of it and they're not scrubbing it out or using an otherwise heavy bow stroke in the beginning. There is PLENTY of time for it later on towards the end, particularly in the coda as the dance ends and it's not quite so "waltz" anymore, it's developed into more of a Russian dance. And where do we hear a REAL Russian dance?! In Tchaikovsky's immediately next work, the finale of the Concerto!!
