She is completely correct when she tells the student that they have to know what is in the score. Most teachers don't emphasize this.

The thing about Tchaikovsky Concerto is that it's not a difficult piece as far as communicating to an audience. It's all just a flurry of notes. But the legato passages like the ones that she's spending the most time on in the lesson are the most important - there aren't that many of them in the concerto so you have to make the most of them!! This violinist is a really good player so she's able to do a lot more with it than many people who basically just hit all the notes!

I loved it when Miriam demonstrated the phrasing. Everything made sense, the beautiful dialogue and floating journey through the passage to reach a destination with passionate feeling.

When she started playing i was in awe. She's in her 80s and can still play so well omg

@@danny_chestnut253 She is turning 78 this month but yes, still playing well! I've heard people who sadly started deteriorating badly in their 50s.

MIriam Fried has this ability to make a violinist whos already playing at a really high level play even better and improve dramatically in such a short period of time. No wonder so many of her students have gone on to win numerous international violin competitions and become world renowned soloists like Inmo Yang Stella Chen SooBeen Lee Clara jumi Kang Julian Rhee Maria Loudenitch i could literally go on. She will definitely go down in history as one of the best violin teachers of this century. Not to mention how amazing of a violinist she is having won the Queen Elizabeth and Paganini competion and has performed as a soloist with almost every major orchestra in the US and europe.❤

I always have to wonder about these people who troll on these threads, calling really distinguished players "total crap" as teachers. NOW - if they quite clearly deserve it, that's one thing. But if they're giving sensible advice, it tells everyone that they totally don't get it. Not that they care, I'm sure, as narcissists have not much of a conscience usually. This student in the video is a very good violinist! Here is the thing too - you're gonna play how you're gonna play. A teacher can give you some ideas to think about but ultimately after a certain point, they can't change your playing very much. You have to do it yourself and kind of filter out whatever you want from what a teacher says.

I think Ms. Fried is a marvelous teacher. She is a taskmaster too, but that is fine because her comments improve people's playing!!!

I have a great violin and bow. Is it fair to demand the same from a student with inferior quality lower grade rental or purchase?

She seems to enjoy hearing herself more than hearing the musicians.

Mariam is a great legendary player. But as as a teacher she knows shit. Can only be applied to a Strad.
