Mom Arrested for DUI in Front of her Daughter’s School

- On November 6, 2023 around 11:21 AM, Officer Kyra Teixeira with the Ledyard Police Department headed over to Ledyard Middle School at 1860 Route 12 after there was a report of a potential intoxicated motorist in the bus lane in front of the school. The caller stated that when the parent dropped off her child, she appeared intoxicated. Officer Teixeira made contact with the driver of the vehicle, who was identified as 33-year-old Christina, and she appeared to be asleep behind the wheel with the vehicle running.
The officer knocked on the window and asked her if she was ok. She was asked for her driver’s license and Christina stated that her license was suspended. While speaking with the operator, the officer noticed that she had glossy, red bloodshot eyes, her speech lacked clear enunciation, and she appeared disoriented and disheveled. The operator admitted to having taken a particular controlled substance an hour earlier. She also admitted to having smoked, but denied having any alcohol before operating the motor vehicle.
Based on her suspicion of impairment, the driver was asked to exit the vehicle and perform field sobriety exercises. Detective Cadro and Lieutenant Muench were present during testing. Officer Teixeira started with the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus (HGN) test, and she observed the lack of smooth pursuit, distinct and sustained nystagmus at maximum deviation, and the onset of nystagmus prior to 45 degrees (6/6 clues). She did not observe vertical nystagmus. The second exercise was the Walk and Turn test, and this test was terminated because she nearly fell to the ground several times. The third exercise was the One Leg Stand test, but it also had to be terminated because Christina nearly fell over. The remaining field sobriety tests including the Lack of Convergence, Modified Romberg Balance Test, and Finger to Nose test were not completed due to the state in which Christina was in.
Based on the report from the caller, her admission to consuming a controlled substance, and her inability to perform the field sobriety exercises, Christina was placed under arrest for driving under the influence. She was transported to the Ledyard Police Department for further processing. At the station, Officer Teixeira read her the implied consent located on the back of the A-44 form at 12:10 PM. After she was given the opportunity to call an attorney, Christina refused to take the breath test and urine test. Detective Cadro also witnessed her refuse a DRE evaluation.
Christina was charged with violating C.G.S. 14-227a - Operating under the influence, C.G.S. 14-215(1) - Operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license, and C.G.S. 53-21 - Risk of injury to a minor. Christina’s mother posted a 10% cash bond for her, and she was released from Ledyard Police custody on a $7,500 surety bond. She was given a court date in the New London Superior Court on November 7, 2023 at 9:00 AM. A DCF referral was made a 1:17 PM due to her daughter being in the motor vehicle while she was operating it under the influence.

And the danger that comes with it but as professionals that they should be a little bit more sensitive. Like the detective thing typical junkie what are the officers saying I didn't want to touch anything, and flying that you can get something from just touching it. I am educated on that stuff and they need to be educated as well because anything she might have cannot be contracted by air or touch, only by bodily fluids.

She was slurring bad. No idea if she took too much (I know nearly nothing about methadone) or was drinking, too. Something sure as hell isn't right.
People like this give methadone a bad name. She's definitely using other things along with it. If you're on the right dose you are not high and if you take narcotics with methadone it doesn't make you high. Thats why addicts lower their dose so they can get high. If you don't take the time to do your homework and make a judgment then you are the ignorant one. Each person has their own journey through sobriety that works for them. People can use methadone and contribute to society, work and live an everyday normal life. If your clinic gives you too much you're only cheating yourself. This lady is full of crap.

I agree with you, I have been clean for 17 years. I have been on methadone the whole time and no relapses, also where I go to their are people on 600mg 1×a day. I was on 340 mg up until 2 years ago and dropped down to 170mg in 5 months. I am done I go once a week, because where I go if you're prescribed benzos you are not allowed a higher privileges. I have been on Xanax since the was teenager and never abused them because I need them. I have never been impaired from either medication, but there are people at my clinic who nodding off because they are on too much and are using other drugs. They used to kick people out if you had more than 3 dirty ua's, they no longer do that. They just have to go every day except Sunday.

i thank heaven above for having such wonderful parents. my mother and father were married for 62 years. they are both gone now and i miss them immensely. mom 4 years ago and dad 4 months ago. i hope this lady can get it together. if not for herself, at least for her child.
I’m very sorry for your loss. My parents were married 34 years before my Mom passed. Marriage of such length just isn’t common anymore. People just go, oh well, I’ll get a divorce and try again. The sanctity and commitment involved is absolutely lost on people anymore.
She's blaming Methadone? I take it every day and it allows me to function like a normal citizen, most people that I interact with regularly have no idea that I take it. If it made me act all effed up like this woman, I wouldn't use it, that's for sure. As an aside, I don't smoke marijuana, nor do I drink alcohol, ever. For this broad to use Methadone as an excuse is sickening.

I was a pharmacy dispenser. Methadone did not cause drowsiness in any of our patients.

Not only that, you never know when your child may have an emergency! To be impaired at 11AM is just careless and selfish. What if her doll baby got sick and needed picking up? What if daughter injured herself and needed picking up to take to the ER? What if there was a catastrophic weather event and she needed to get to her daughter? So many things can pop up when you have a child; as a parent it’s YOUR responsibility to be ready for them when they need you regardless of time. Being ready includes having all your faculties together so you can safely get yourself and your child where y’all need to be. When you made the decision to have a child you gave up your right to party (with narcotics and alcohol in excess)and be selfish. Or at least good parents do. This is just sad. My youngest is a girl and she’s 16. Had I shown up to school like that then had police involved in front of the school she’d never let me live it down. And I’d never forgive myself for being so selfish.

No doubt! I got a call from the school once that my kid got a broken elbow playing soccer and I had to come pick her up. Glad I wasn't sloppy drunk (my drinking slowed down radically when my wife got pregnant two years into our marriage and then I totally stopped when she was about 3). Allen Iverson showed up reeking of alcohol to his custody hearings, hell of a guy.

This makes me furious that she’s claiming at the beginning “I just took my methadone” as if that’s the excuse she’s all loaded. I’ve been on methadone maintenance for over 10 years. When you’re taking it as prescribed and you are at a correct dose, no one would ever know you’d taken anything. People that are on methadone and nodding out or slurring words n shit, are either taking something else, or their dose is way too high.
When I was 11 my mother went up to my middle school drunk. Which I didn’t find out until I got home. I was so humiliated and embarrassed that I called my principal and apologized for my mother’s behavior. I’m 50 now and remember it like it was yesterday. So, I feel bad for her kid. She will carry that embarrassment forever.

Never understood methodone. An addict is literally trading one addiction for another. Someone I went to school with lost her spouse to an overdose. Since their 9 year old son literally slept in the bed with his dad’s deceased body after an overdose CPS got involved. She lost custody in November, before the holidays. She must go to inpatient treatment to get off methodone as well before getting him back. Hope her state takes it just as seriously as Pennsylvania did. At least my county. She totaled THIRTEEN cars from that drug.
The idea is it allows opiate addicts to live a somewhat functional life but it's definitely not safe to drive on and the clinics allow way too high of doses. There's been far better alternatives for years like Suboxone which doesn't have as many side effects and can be effective if used properly. Quitting all together would of course be the best outcome but that's obviously easier said than done.
They are starting to use methadone as an alternative pain medication instead of OxyContin. It’s given at much lower doses than to someone with addiction and actually stops the abuse of other opiates. I’ve heard lately of terminally ill cancer patients using methadone instead of morphine and strong opiates and they can actually function and live out their last days until the stronger ones are a necessity. It’s sad it has such a negative reputation because it can be a really good medication.
I hate methadone.... coming off of heroin and prescribed opiates sucks, but won't kill you. Coming off of methadone can actually kill you.
@@tarrahschuessler3297 - I know someone that gets 10mg a day prescribed for a hip injury and she said it's helped her tremendously. She's also not nodding out all the time or clearly intoxicated like the lady in this video with the slurred speech. I've heard the clinics allowing people to go up to 200mg or more which is insanity.
@nkw1985 Suboxone is a wonderful alternative. My sibling had addiction to Rx meds and has been stable and productive for 21 years on Suboxone. No high. Just normal.

I worked in the office of my son’s school for three years, and we had two of these 😖 The first time, a teacher smelled alcohol and thought the mom seemed drunk but wasn’t sure how to handle it in the chaos of the pickup line. She went to the headmaster who called the police, and they met the mom at her house. The second one was a middle-school mom, and the staff didn’t have contact with her in line. She t-boned someone turning out of the school and the police realized she was drunk when they showed up.
Poor woman and her child. Addiction is the hardest thing to overcome and to have a child while going thru it is rough. I hope the child doesn’t continue the cycle.

I didn't know Methadone caused drowsiness. Poor kid, she'll be tormented by the mean kids and has this as a parent. Hopefully the grandma took custody so she can get her act together.

I remind myself that although her behavior is 100% unacceptable, many addicts exist bc of some practitioners prescribing opioids for too long or to people who didn't need them. Not anymore. Had surgery lately? I have and they did not prescribe any opioids at all. Double mastectomy and given Tylenol with codeine.

I am a retired nurse and I’ve seen a lot of people on medical maintenance and it definitely works if you work the program but.. you have to drive daily to those clinics for months and months to earn “take home” meds and if you mix Mdone with literally anything else.. it makes the effects like drowsiness more than if taken alone so hopefully she will get it right soon before she does herself or someone else in 🤷🏻♀️

Three people searching the vehicle for a good 10 minutes, and no one thought to lift up the scarf??? She said she did not have gloves on, yet she was touching other stuff. didn't make attempts to communicate, "hey, can someone check under the scarf? I'm not wearing gloves".... they were very nice throughout the whole search & field sobriety test, but that was like watching a 2 year old trying to find mommy behind the curtain with her feet sticking out. 😄

I've taken pain meds before.. If I couldn't even talk, I think I would figure out another way to get my child to school.. Idk.. Maybe she doesn't have anybody else and people alway's say, oh, just call Uber well, you need to have money for that.. Im not sticking up for this woman by any means!! Doubtful. The child likely seems older than her age, due to what she's seen and experienced. I've seen it. They have to grow up way too early.

People like this give Methadone a bad name. There's no reason anyone should look that intoxicated after taking it. The only reason why someone would be this intoxicated off methadone is if they are using more than their initial dose, or they are mixing it with benzos or other drugs. The vast majority of people who take Methadone are good people who aren't taking it to get high. If this is happening to you or someone you know on methadone, then they are taking too much and it's on them to change the dose. This isn't a typical situation of a typical stable methadone patient. You can look at what happened during COVID when clinics loosened their regulations, with worries of diversion. What happened was over 90% of people given extra take homes doses were compliant.

I'm on Methadone. If your dose is causing you to nod out, it's WAAAYYYYYY to high. It's purpose is to keep you from going through withdrawal, NOT as a substitute for using however much you want whenever you want (if it's being taken as a part of a monitored substance abuse treatment program). If being taken for pain, and that is your response to it, you DAMN WELL SHOULDN'T BE DRIVING, and you know it. Just because it's prescribed doesn't mean you can drive while under the influence of it, and you sure aas hell shouldn't be using Marijuana on top of it.

Methadone is given to Herion addicts who are supposed to be getting off the herion. It's just government controlled drug, most likely herion itself that they never get off of.
