  • Around 2:57 AM on January 14, 2022, Officer Torie Teets with the Athens-Clarke County Police Department responded to a motor vehicle accident involving a 2004 Ford Escape and 2013 Ford Edge in the vicinity of Moose Club Drive and Davis Street. The caller stated that they struck a parked vehicle. As she arrived on scene, she made contact with the owner of the parked Ford Edge as well as the driver of the Ford Escape. The driver of the Ford Escape was identified as 20-year-old Georgia Laster.
    Georgia told the officer that she was coming home after looking for her friend, and that she struck the Ford Edge when she was attempting to make a left turn. The Ford Edge had been parked in a designated parallel parking spot. As Officer Teets was speaking with Georgia, she detected the odor of alcohol. Georgia initially denied consuming alcohol and refused to submit to field sobriety exercises. Based on the motor vehicle crash, the odor of alcohol, and her refusal to perform field sobriety exercises, Officer Teets placed Georgia under arrest for driving under the influence.
    Since both vehicles had sustained extensive damages, they had to be towed from the scene. After Georgia was placed under arrest, she refused to submit blood or breath samples for testing. Officer Teets then transported Georgia to the Clarke-County Jail and she was issued the following citations: DUI - Alcohol - Under 21 YOA (40-6-391(k)), Failure to Maintain Lane/Improper Driving on Road (40-6-48), Driving Against License Class (40-5-24), Underage Drinking (3-3-23), and Operation of Unregistered Vehicle (40-2-8)

I didn't hear her say that she was sorry at all. The alcohol on her breathe could be from "yesterday." Sure that's BS,but if it were true, whats worse, the fact that she drank enough to still have it still on her breathe so much time afterwards or the fact that she's admitting that she hasn't brushed her teeth since yesterday? She must have been flying down the road to be able to push his car that far. The laws in some states are crazy when someone can be that drunk to cause damage like that, which could have been people that she hit, then be released from jail just a few hours later. No wonder so many people reoffend.

    She admitted to drinking a ton of liquor just a few hours before she plowed into someomes car and totaling both cars. And she is under 21. I know she did what lawyers say by refusing the tests, but she screwed herself by admitting to drinking a LOT underage shortly before the accident. Seems like 5 hours after taking 5 or 6 shots wasnt enough to sober her up.

  • @pianoman1396

    I’m certain some of these people think that, if they don’t do the field sobriety exercises, the police won’t have any evidence against them. In the UK, if you refuse to do the breath test you get given the same sentence as you would with a DUI; I don’t think people realise this.

    • @trninfan
      @trninfan 2 месяца назад +2

      Refusing field sobriety exercises is always the right call. In controlled conditions, only the eye nystagmus test reliably distinguishes impaired from not impaired (and that's under 100% ideal conditions). If you refuse a breath test in most states in the US you get an automatic DUI, and in some cases there are even stiffer penalties. But a good lawyer could plausibly get you out of that charge and have to plead to something lesser. If you blow a .24, you can't exactly deny that you were 3x the legal limit

    • @pianoman1396
      @pianoman1396 2 месяца назад

      @@trninfan I don’t know fluently how it works from state to state, but in the UK, refusing the breath test gets you the same outcome as a DUI. We don’t have field sobriety tests here, but invariably on most episodes of the cop shows here you’ll get people refusing the breath test thinking it will get them off the hook due to a lack of evidence.

    • @Saymyname-zj2ml
      @Saymyname-zj2ml 2 месяца назад

      Of course they realize it. When at a police station, cops repeatedly state that a refusal will cause an automatic suspension for X time.
      Also, don't confuse a preliminary breathalyzer with an evidentiary breathalyzer. The former is much less reliable and, for that reason, can be declined. So can FSTs.

    • @Saymyname-zj2ml
      @Saymyname-zj2ml 2 месяца назад +1

      @@pianoman1396In the US, a cop needs to build a foundation for both an arrest and an evidentiary breathalyzer. So suspects should decline both FSTs and preliminary breathalyzer. All questions should be refused, too. Don't admit to having taken drugs or alcohol. An admission sets up a request for FSTs, which set up a preliminary breath test. Also, don't answer inquires, such as, "Have you had a recent head injury, serious accident, medical diagnosis, blah, blah, blah?" A "no" would limit defense strategy.

    • @pianoman1396
      @pianoman1396 2 месяца назад +1

      @@Saymyname-zj2ml In the UK we have both preliminary and evidential. With the evidential, they take two samples and go with the lower reading of the two (that’s done at the police station, rather than the roadside) - and yes, refuse that and you get the same sentence.
