What really impresses me is that I had no idea a 150 was big enough to fit two people PLUS Dan's ego! That's amazing!
COTY
Over 82F, the aircraft would be unable to lift his ego, much less two grown men with the flaps fully extended.
@@oscarb9139 LOL
I think his ego caused the flaps to "malfunction" too.
I learned to fly with a 150 and a fat instructor. When I did my solo, it took me a second to figure out why I was claiming straight up, like a catapult ! the fat guy never bothered to remind me of that weight change......These little planes are very sensitive to the weight of the pilots inside. Dan is no light weight himself.....he is "fluffy" .....had he been skinny, he may have avoided the corn in the cabin........maybe.
I heard Juan Brown in the background. What a blessing to aviation Juan is !!!
I didn’t hear him. Thanks for that info.
I heard Dan refer to Juan, though.
I'm confused now. Which one of Dan's crashes is this? There are so many I get them mixed up.
This is "Flaps-40" mishap
8 foot tall corn at 35,000+ plants per acre (extremely dense foliage mass) provided a large amount of energy absorbtion .... almost like flying into a giant net that wouldn't let go.
I had the same experience in my Cessna 150 only I had a 6300 ft runway and immediately aborted the touch and go.
I was able to touch back down and stop with 100 ft of runway left. The tower closed the runway for a few minutes until I could back taxi off the runway. I always sight the flap indicator to verify flaps are deploying or retracting during any take off.The flap indicator wasn't moving and my amp gauge indicated a heavy current draw. I also didn't hear the familiar sound associated with flap movement. The flap motor armature rear bearing had failed and caused the armature to lock up.
Had I been taking off from a smaller airfield the result would have been much different. Many older150 owners always preferred the manual flap control and always disliked the electric flaps.Cessna did away with 40 degree flaps in the later model 152 as a safety precaution for just this reason knowing the plane will not climb with a 40 degree flap extension. Maximum flap extension in 152's is thirty degrees. The 152 also has the Lycoming 0-235 engine with 10 additional horsepower.
Hey, Forrest, as always, thanks for another informative and entertaining post. (It's been too long since your last one!) It brought back some fun memories since I learned to fly in a Cessna 150. I don't remember if I ever landed my plane quite like that. Chris
I'm so glad they're both ok! In times like these we definitely can't afford to lose a man with with such funny puns. ❤️
Thank you for sharing. I enjoyed watching!! And am thankful all ended up safe!!! 👍
Both people got out unhurt and the go fund me got more than expected. A bad situation turned into win and win. Very thankful.
I bet the flaps micro switches were at fault here. Seen them fail many times (normally from lubricants used in that area). I would suggest only using a maximum of 30 degrees flaps on 150’s and replacing the micro switches every 10 years or sooner if contaminants are present. Fly safe everyone.
Peaches and cream corn is the best ❤
Flap tracks on that 150 were worn out two years ago
Dan was not flying the plane until flaps froze. Then he took over and saved 2 lifes and a plane. So i would say he definitely owed his "ego." Matt was able to go back to his family and friends (and Don), and the 150 is back on the air again. Way to go, Dan.
Freakin' Juan sounds like a little kid at the STOL drags.
A happy little kid:))))
I’m sorry! I had not understood the “go around” was attempted after intentionally flying into a bottle neck overgross on a hot day. Then the flaps mysteriously malfunction- kinda like Martha Lunken’s transponder. Yes, Dan is to be commended for keeping the aircraft under control, and for his work promoting such. This however comes under the category of using superior judgement to avoid having to exercise superior skill.
Why I fly simulators.. .. .. the last time my flaps failed in DCS world I re-entered my HOTAS Keybindings and went around again..
Very impressive reactions, instincts and result..
Great video as always! Another good one would be film composer James Horner’s crash site.
"No margarine for error" lol 😆 Great videos! Just watched the 1st one of yours I've seen and you do an outstanding (not in a field tho) job of explaining these accidents. The 1st video was about the Kansas Teams Gold plane crash. What a sad situation that was! I also watch Dan Gryder, Juan Brown, and I've seen quite a few videos by young Jacob about his dad's (I'm assuming that as I'm not sure) beautiful plane that you flew in with him, your brother from another mother Glenn Hancock. Liked and subscribed to add to my aviation related videos. Thanks for sharing!
I'm going to phrase this carefully to avoid sounding like a know-it-all, Monday-morning quarterback... In the future, after learning from the incident in this video, if I'm ever executing a low approach, with a planned go-around and no plausible over-run area for a landing, I think I will not select a flap setting beyond one at which the aircraft can achieve positive rate...
svyt: me too - EXCEPT, darn it, it's those UNPLANNED UNFORSEEN gremlins that reach up from the depths of the murky unknown and then it's . . . . GOTCHA !!
there you go ! you learned from the guy.....he proved his point.
WoW, great stuff Forrest
Thank you. I like the E-vehicles you have added to your channel:)))

Would AQP would have prevented this?
2:25 sounds like Juan Browne from blancolirio
Glad ya'll didn't pull up too much!
Excellent video very informative thank you very much
Your welcome!
I could listen to the drone of those twin engines all day. Also, was that Juan Brown from the blancolirio channel I heard there rooting on the STOL pilots?
Yes, Juan was narrating the show live from a stage.
If you don't have any content to post? Make some 😂. Glad you're both ok. So what caused the flap issue?
Who tries to run down people in a DC-3? Dan does 😂
The DC-3 is not zippy enough on the ground and it takes 15 minutes to start it and begin to move it. Last time I was only able to run over 27 cops that couldn’t get out of the way fast enough, I’ll do better next time. Maybe if I try it at night they won’t see me coming? Open for ideas.
What was the farmer's opinion
That sounds like "Brownie" calling the STOL comp.
It is.
juan brown says "don't hang it on the prop" ; - ))
No Forrest, your other right. I'm guessing your really happy about not having a ride on that one Forrest.
Why do a low approach with full flaps!
The video explains why he did it.
@@forresthaggertychannel4301 Flaps 40 was unnecessary to view the stol runway approach and was the gotcha! Anyone who has instructed in a 150 knows flaps 40 is a gotcha especially on a low approach to a runway you can’t land on! That’s why you never have a student put flaps 40 on a practice emergency landing! Nice corn stalk analysis though.
Everyone may be good, but should be embarrassed like crazy ......
I'd like to see the final investigation report.
BTW - I am not a knucklehead.
Dan did well indeed!
Thank GOD for the corn field 😁
Is there some quirk in flap use in this plane?
EXCELLENT REPORT - so thankful they BOTH walked away!
His new nick-name is "Upside Dan" Gryder. Make that a t-shirt and sell it at the next ACCA's.
2:27 that sounds like blancolirio
That indeed was Juan narrating the stol event
It was.

*There are somethings money can't buy, For everything else, there's MasterCard*
Did you ever figure out why the flaps stuck ?
Haven’t heard yet.
What I don't understand is why the airplane wasn't snagged for a dead battery as it was hand propped. The comment on the crash video was the only thing that has power is the ELT.
Loose connection on the starter motor
DIY- making cream corn.
He kept the wings level.
Could you please pin to the top here....what was the cause of the flap issue? Thx
The owner of the plane explained it on his channel.
Two grown men in a 150 on a hot day is screaming to be a statistic!
I hope you guys paid for that farmers corn 🌽.
With Dan it’s not a matter of if but when. He ended up in a hospital recently. One day he’s going to end up in someone else’s video channel as a statistic.
You should warn those formation fliers they can only tempt fate for so long. As the saying goes, "There are old pilots and there are bold pilots but there are no old, bold pilots".
Yeah, but as you prove, there’s plenty of old, boring pilots.
A 150 will fly with full flaps
I hope Dan see this 😆🤣
Two videos in one week?? The best channel on RUclips is back, and in a huge way! Thank you so much, Forrest.
I'm guessing Dan's application for membership into the "Flying Cowboys" was rejected.
But then again, maybe not…..
They have had a few mishaps as well.
Forget the inconvenience Dan. No one died. Any landing you can walk away from is a good landing. It was a good day.
Some are more of a pain and not just your pocket book!
I'm glad you put the date because at this point you need to get specific with which Dan Gryder accident you're talking about 😂😂😂
HaHa.......You never get down to 100 feet full flaps 40 in a C150 with the intention of going around. Flaps 40 at 100 feet only when you 100% commit to landing period. Whether the flaps stopped working or not is irrelevant. Pilot error sealed their fate even if the flaps could retract.
Never? Not even if there’s a sudden incident on the runway?
@@forresthaggertychannel4301 You find a different landing point. Go practice recovering from flaps 40 at altitude without losing altitude. It's an eyeopener. Do not deploy flaps 40 in a stock C150 when close to the ground unless you have committed to landing. Checkout the C150 POH.
Awesome video on the “unflappable” (pun intended) Dan Gryder incident! Nice work on Dan’s part handling that situation and keeping everyone safe; great decision making and control on his part.
I watch Dan's channel all the time I didn't know this had happened to him.sounds like he knew what not to do unlike the pilots featured in his uploads.namely a turn stall resulting in a messy crash and burn.
I had no idea either. I guess he had the air speed to make the turn but he advises not to make turns in emergencies like this
Speaking of extremely short takeoffs, I took an aviation course when I was in school in Lincoln, NE. My instructor said it gets so windy in Lincoln that he can take off backward if the wind is sustained above takeoff speed.
Thats true. I watched a taylor craft at shreveport downtown make approaches stop midway fly backwards and change runway headings
Wow no way, I can fly a plane upside down, backwards, and with the engine off, in a tornado.
All your instructor said was that he can fly a plane if the air speed is fast enough 🤷🏼♂️ “Backwards” is relative
@@BikingVikingHH It's a matter of physics. The plane lifts when there is enough wind speed going across the wings. If the plane is facing a wind that is faster than the lift speed then the plane lifts. The plane can go backward as long as the net speed is more than the lift speed.
The last thing I'd be doing, is walking around smiling and chuckling about things, if I had crashed and destroyed another mans airplane.
Sorry, but this whole thing rubbed me the wrong way.
Destroyed is a good way to describe it, the airplane should be junked. I would not set foot in a plane with that kind of crash history as it will always be a big question mark even if it's "fixed." No way to tell how it's been stressed or strained. That's one reason they get so devalued after a crash.
I haven't been in a plane for over 10 years now. The older I get the more I realise what a marvel they are!! Absolutely magic.
Agreed and some times the almost comedic amount of things that need to go wrong to bring one down.Tenerife the loss of life and the number of things that conspired for that accident to even happen boggles the mind.
That Lockheed 12 is amazing! Earhart had a customized Lockheed Electra 10E Special. Beautiful aircraft.
Flys like a dream!!!
Farmer shows up and says “I need $1500 for corn damage”.
corn's 5 for $2 currently : - ))
You can bet he'll be calling somebody, likely the insurance company. Damaged crop always gets paid for.
Well done. I don't like electric windows on cars, either. I'm guessing this is not the first time electric flaps have failed and caused accidents.
Manual windows are all the cardio I get in a day
Great vid! The airshow looked awesome! Terrifying crash but I am so glad no one was hurt. (Lol except the corn)
I had one of those for years. There’s no way with 40 flaps you are going anywhere but down. It comes down like a dive bomber . It seems odd that you would use more than 20 unless you are trying for a very short field over trees.
By any chance we're the flaps tested as beinv functional after the incident? Of course they were!
Never Use 40 Degrees ! Come on Man ??
Do Zodiac locations next!
Oh yassss!!!!!
I will have to do that one soon!
I love the look on Drew's face when he realizes his dad was in the airplane. Priceless!!

I love how calm he is “we got corn in a cabin”. I respect people who keep calm. “I’m sorry for the inconvenience” …. All while creating content … awesome
He is hilarious......not only an investigator, pilot, musician but a comedian to boot.....Go, dude......that pretty girl, the niece of Cooper really made an impression on Dan, as he had stars in his eyes.......ahhhhhh. Pretty girls with the real stuff always make an impact !
'creating content' should be the absolute last concern, let alone immediately after a crash.
Outstanding Forrest! I subscribe to Dan's channel too. You have a wonderful way of explaining events with all the little details you include. Love it!
Glad they were ok. That twin engine you flew in was a beauty!
One of the things I love about your videos is the narration that you do. You do such great narration. I am really big on narration and I do so in my videos. I really like how you explain things in detail as so we the viewers can have a better understanding of what is taking place. Forrest Haggerty your videos are absolutely fascinating. That is because YOU are a fascinating man.
Did the NTSB ever prove the flaps were not working pre crash and would not retact, given who it was cant trust a word.
Didn't NTSB investigators work the flaps fine after the accident?
No, even after they brought the airplane home to Texas with the wings removed the flaps were still in the down position.
Yes they retracted fine afterwards could have been something mechanical stuck and dislodged after the incident….
What better person to be there to document this than Forrest Haggerty
He said he tried a 180 turnback (from 100 feet agl) but ran out of energy (speed) and had to put it down on the cornfield at the 180 degree level of the 270 degrees Turnback he tried. You should not turnback when so low and slow. That was AN IMPOSSIBLE TURN. Before he was sayingfor years to never do impossible turns, then he tried a MCA Speed slow one from 100 agl. LOL>>. I used to teach EFATO 4 maneuvers on the runway when CfI in the 1990's.
His engine was still running. Don’t try the 180 when your engine fails.
@@forresthaggertychannel4301But with full flaps too low and slow you will stall before finishing the turn, which is an... fill the blank... AN IMPOSSIBLE TURNBACK. i LEARNED THEM from ELM channel old CFI in 1996. 2 kinds. Cherokee 180. 800 agl.
@@JavierBrent he turned less than 180°. Maybe 120°.
@@forresthaggertychannel4301More than 160 i saw on photos and of course loss lift and had to land on tall corn. Impossible Turnback he tried. And failed.
@@JavierBrent so you didn’t witness it. What I saw doesn’t match up to your description in photos. He was about 80 feet AGL and struggling. If he had continued forward he would have plowed into homes and trees. As he made a shallow left turn he was losing altitude the whole time. Healthy engine. Hot humid weather. Flaps were stuck at 40°. He couldn’t land at 90° to runway because of a farm house ahead. He turned a little more, lined up with the corn field all the while loosing altitude and landed in the corn. He was approximately 2 to 3 hundred yards from the runway that was 180°. Never once did he say he was heading for the runway. He said he was looking at the corn because he knew he couldn’t make the runway.
By the way, I don’t believe that you are a CFI.
To low , to slow gentlemen. Practice what you preach.
He did. That’s why they didn’t die.
Any landing everybody safely walks away from is a good landing. Glad Dan is ok.
But if you can fly the plane the next day, it was a great landing.
Love Juan's excitement during the STOL event. Watch out Bruce Buffer 🤣🤣
Time for the NTSB get even. 😂
Danny... always expect what could happen for a 400ft runway approach...how much was the total weight of the airplane at the time of crash and what was the pressure altitude? Kinda of surprised at you..did the faa do anything to you?
Oh Forrest you lucky git,, going up in that Lockheed 12.wow..im a bit jel.
Amazing how cool calm and collected he was about it all! 'yeah we're all good'... casually blogging the event. Funny when joking with Blancolirio about he's going to be analysing what went wrong 😅
I love that sound of a twin engined aircraft..as it revs up and thunders down the runway.
Then it lifts off...great
Me too!
This chap Dan seems to crash a lot!
Actually - the story is - we were on final for a 400 foot runway "just to see what the Full Throttle pilots see" when we shouldn't have. The 150 isn't designed for a 400ft RWY is it? THEN fill in from a Go Around. I don't know - what did insurance finally say about this?
I love Dan but the bottom line for me (A&P/Observer for a long time) is that the check list for landing in a 150 is 30 degrees flaps for a short field landing per the checklist. I believe 40 degrees was the maximum throw on the 150's, The 152's had the maximum flap deflection changed to 130 degrees for that very reason (I've worked on/flown a lot of them back in the 90's but 52's and 72's were the norm) because it's not much of a margin @ 40 to stall in a 150, but hey, you're landing right, it a controlled impact with the ground? Plus, they just don't have a lot of power to begin with, so at full flaps even firewall forward wouldn't overcome the drag on a hot, humid day . Since the linkage was probably never really exercised to 140 degrees very often, if at all (nothing in the checklist calls for 40), it could have locked mechanically, difference is literally 1 or 2 twists of a clevis, if that were the case it should have popped a breaker but one never knows. Really glad everyone was safe though. Be careful out there dan & company!
Were you a bit nervous being so close to the STAL?
No. I was more nervous filming the skydivers jumping out of the the DC3:))))
You should see the blue angels if your scared of close formations
that p51 is sooooo cool looking
Thank God no one got hurt. Excellent content as always! Thanks Forrest!
Did my first solo cross country to this airport from Dupage airport when i was 16. Went here a lot actually while hammerhead stalling in the pattern at Rochelle lol
Pilot error
This type of accident not being able to fly out of ground effect with 40% flaps with only 96 horse power was very common. Later they restricted flap setting to a maximum of 30% on the
C-152's Maybe at a earlier date. Was not a good choice to use 40% flaps really only useful on steep approaches over obstacles. Lesson learned. Glad they are OK.
I was there, but left just before the incident. ACCA was a great time and the airshow was really cool. Thanks for sharing your video.
