    Just wanna say that I did these exercises earlier this year and noticed quite a difference once my back had been trained more forward. I stopped doing the exercises for personal reasons and after some months noticed the rib hump return to how it looked before. So I've come back here to brush up on it and hopefully retrain it again, but I can clarify it made a difference at one point, so thank you :)

    Interesting! I have actually been doing some movement based therapy using similar principles of bending and rotation. Thankfully ive found amazing results (better than passive modalities imo). But i found that the direction of my rotated spine was different to what you mentioned. My T spine bent to the left more but actually rotated to the left side more as well. So my counteracting movement was bend right and rotate to the right side.
    Do you think theres a big variance amongst those with functional scoliosis in the direction of rotation relative to direction of curvature?

    • @MoveWithScoliosis
      @MoveWithScoliosis  4 года назад +5

      The first one you might just want to do the "hump" side... if both shoulders are tight though you can do both sides! Start with 5 breaths in each pose and then you can do more if it feels good. Make sure to listen to your body... that's more important than a fixed number of repetitions. Our bodies are all different :-)

    I have a question, about almost 3 years ago I went for a spinal transfusion and still had a hump on my back and they told me the only way to make it go down was to remove a WHOLE side of ribs..I've been so self conscious because of it and it hurts to lay down on my back when I'm trying to work out . It hurts because of my uneven back ...will this still work ? Or do you have any recommendations to help ..?

    • @MoveWithScoliosis
      @MoveWithScoliosis  4 года назад +1

      this is for unfused spines! With spinal fusion you need to be very careful with twists especially. The first pose is ok but not the second one. There is no quick fix I'm afraid but there are exercises you can do to improve the appearance.

    • @MoveWithScoliosis

      Depends if it's structural or functional. Structural is permanent unless spine treatment, like surgery or a brace, is received. Functional usually happens when you carry a bookbag on one side for too long, or you carry a very heavy book bag. it can be fixed and usually goes away after doing stretches. Your friend should go to the doctor to find out if it's structural or functional if she's concerned about it.

    Sorry this got terribly long but it is terribly important...Please HELP:
    How's about some help for crippled people that can't get on their knees because of their arthritis and cannot even manage this on a bed because they are octogenarians? Attend in for some help because of the thumbprint picture for the video showed some help in the chair. Do you have other exercises in a chair that would help with some aerobic exercise for cardiopulmonary exercise considering really bad joints with hardly any cartilage left to speak of? I need to help my mom. I didn't know things were this bad, as I live afar. Btw, she has let curvature and rib hump - three or four ribs at the lower part of the back are pretty exaggerated and out of place - and has lost normal lower curvature even lordosis or swayback, by sitting on the side of the bed with her feet elevated on a stool reading books or doing puzzles on her lap in a nearly upright fetal position as her joints make it pretty difficult to get around the house with no cartilage in her knees and decrepitus in her hip joints and a completely destroyed ankle /fallen arch arthritic crumble. It is so bad I'm surprised she's not actually walking on her shin bone, it is so far out of whack.
    Her heart through a clot down into her leg, and her kidneys were even going bad again, anyway, I got a vacation and came to see her and while I was resting up from my trip, she woke me up from the other side of the house and threw a closed door wailing enough to block out all other sound. When asking her what happened she couldn't answer me I don't know she said I don't know and she was just wailing. It was getting on my nerves because I just woke up I was wanting to help her but she wasn't telling me anything. Just rocking and wailing. I asked her if I needed to call emergency for her and she said no; can I do anything to help you , no again. You're holding your knee, is it your knee, did it slip out of place, do you need ice, do you need your heating pad what can I do for you. I don't know I don't know. Wailing.
    MOM! WHAT CAN I DO?
    NOTHING, there's just terrible pain in my leg, I was standing in the bathroom in front of the sink and it went to sleep. And it was tingly and then it started hurting real bad! Wailing. Rocking.
    DID YOUR BONE SHIFT!
    NO! It just hurts it hurts so bad.
    I grabbed the phone from the other side of the bed and pulled it over next to her WAILING. . .MOM! HERE'S THE PHONE CALL 911. ONLY YOU KNOW IF YOU NEED IT. I SAY CALL 'EM !... and probably left the room because I cannot tolerate loud noises because I have PTSD and I can handle some emergencies pretty darn good but she didn't want any help so what could I do I went straight to the front room for my cell phone as soon as I dug it out I could hear the ambulance already on its way because the firehouse is just right around the corner.
    Thank God she called him when they did because as soon as they got her out of the house and on the gurney she had a heart attack on the trip to the ambulance! At the hospital it was a balancing act save the leg but then indications came to be saved the life save the heart then they found out we need to save the kidneys and then had to wait about 3 days I think to get her kidneys well enough by changes of medications that were kind of rough on her kidneys to ones that were quote "kidney kind". When her kidney labs were good enough, and they had already placed a not very invasive these days pacemaker as an an emergency thing after a day they had to take the chance but since it's not very invasive these days like in the olden days of Medicine... a risk well worth taking. 3 days later they went in to remove all of the clots. You see the pacemaker had to make the heart stronger so that the leg surgery could be done. Her lower limb was dying since the clots got there. And on top of all that wouldn't you know what she had gone anemic again so they had to give her blood right after the pacemaker. I've got to get her moving her heart is getting stronger with the electric signal making it beat. It has begun to beat on-time the pacemaker is a backup. They have some electronic Bluetooth kind of way of holding this thing over it so that it won't work to see what her heart will do on its own and then they take that little device away and the pacemaker keeps its metronomic timing. The job of Rehabilitation from her long stay at hospital, is up to me because there are many things that she cannot do because of her joints and I don't want pushy physical therapist trying to make her do exercises, only to find out that it cannot be done cuz my mother will try to do it, like a good patient - and she will even try and try - she will even hurt herself, only to be too hurt and too sore to do it the next couple of days, or to even be able to get herself out of bed to go to toilet. I have experience in the field of Rehabilitation and Elder Care and believe me I've got the professional Detachment to go along with it I've even got burnt out. I am empathetic but I am not sympathetic, I will not go easy but I will not go hard. I will only expect my mother to do as much as she possibly can because I know she will try to do the utmost and I can stretch her out a little farther than that just for the sake of range of motion, but when her bones start grinding and making those noises, I already know it's time to quit before she gets the words out of her mouth. Oh another detail is she has the bad lift foot and extremely bad left knee that is bowed out something terrible and she can only control a cane with her right hand / wrist. Using the left it wobbles too much and she doesn't have control as she is VERY right-handed. Furthermore she has not walked with her right leg in time with the cane moving forward simultaneously she is supposed to be on the cane to support the right leg but she uses the cane in her right hand moving in time with the left bad ankle if you can understand that. She should be using it in her left hand to support her when she is using part of her body to support weight off of the right knee. So she hasn't been supporting the knee at all and this I'm sure besides the dowagers hunt she is starting to get from this upright fetal position bedside activity business that has encouraging that the thoracic forward curve she has a sidewards s-curve because of the years of Leaning support on one side which has contracted all those muscles on one side she can hardly even contract the muscles on the side that's pooched out. On top of that consider this I am almost positive that there is some twisting in the lower lumbar; the right side is contracted, the left side is out, and the left leg is shorter and the right leg has become too long. I have figured out some exercises on the side of the bed such as trying correct upright posture and trying to act like she's scooting back in a chair lifting one cheek and scooting one leg back and so forth. Also exercising good posture doing what I have begun to call the One Cheek sneak because of language and understanding and her confusion of overthinking something and making it harder than it has to be I finally got down to my brothers' level and said "Mom just do the One Cheek Sneak" like you're slipping up one butt cheek to let a hopefully silent and non-smelly one escape, and then the other one - she got to laughing a little bit, and nowcompletely understood! Thank God for small favors, you know what I mean?
    Acting like she's getting back in a chair gives a little bit of a twist for the lumbar some stretch and some contraction equal and opposite cuz I really don't know what else to do. And the side to side exercise I worked out for her was to act like a rubber band is suspended between two fixed places and then a finger moves it from side to side to indicate that she should only use her middle to contract one side of the ribs and then the other side so that it completely stretches out the opposite side well there was confusion there too and she complicated it by overthinking it and made it extremely difficult until I finally came out with the rubber band idea and to try to keep her head right in the middle of the space her pelvis takes up and that when she goes from side to side she shouldn't just be like a metronome her head should actually wobble in one place within the imagined pelvic space only up higher and have her looking in the mirror to do that exercise. So that she can get the neck stretches in, too, because her neck has become quite stiff from barely ever moving it. Is there any more than what I'm doing. Her Mobility depends upon it as does my career. She is definitely not a person that would farewell at a nursing home. She would not be able to sleep, she is too independent, she will follow the nurses and the nurses aides but as soon as someone gets snippy or rude with her, oh, my God, that would be very bad for my mother's heart and her mind. There would be retaliatory snippiness from the aides, there might even be some ungentle transfers to and from the bed to and from the pot ungentle touches where cleanup is concerned or maybe not as good or no clean up when it was needed, but only near the shift end causing bad skin and possibly soaring if pressure releases were not done during the night, or daytime if up in a chair; even some of the nurses especially for a nurses who can get on a plane and fly right back to their country if they ever got in to trouble.
