Mega Saturday Funpack! edit: hahahaa nah I don't think it's really a cliff hanger. Getting them to stop bothering you is the actual goal in my book too.
If they were REALLY douchey, they could've just opened up the PS3, broke something, closed it back up and returned it; unless you put stickers on it so you can tell if someones opened it up. Have you considered a "Retro Console and Game Rental" service? That may be a way to make money off of consoles that you have a surplus of that people want to play for a short amount of time, but don't want to play enough to justify buying it.
It's too much of a hassle and you can't garantee the system won't be abused and would keep a good work order over time. I personally do it for events, I sell them the items and then when they bring it back I refund a good portion of the price but keep a "rental fee". You can't do that all the time though as I said.
@@AmazingFrenchman I was thinking they would sign a sort of "contract" (where they agree to replace the console if it is damaged); they would need to put a card on file and if the system is returned in poor condition, their card would be charged to replace it. I think most would only rent it for a weekend, so it's a pretty small window for something to be abused or broken, but I understand that "things happen".
Back in the day I used to work in a video rental that also carried a PS2 and GameCube. After closing hours I was free to take them (plus *all* the games), provided I returned them the next day before opening. Since that wasn't until 2PM it gave us many long, awesome nights of playing with friends 😁 👌 Retro consoles are probably too cheap to make it viable, but it's definitely a neat idea
@@lievenvv Depends on the console and the games; especially since COVID hit. If you wanted the GameCube, you could get the console for about $50, but if you wanted to play Paper Mario on it, you'll be paying $140. Super Mario Sunshine goes for $75, MK Double Dash goes for $60, Melee goes for $60, etc...
I am a young man and I am disappointed in that lack of a resolution Pat! Can I exchange this Tales from the Game Store episode for another one? I think there may have been some problem with the RUclips server losing the end of the video, because it plays just fine om my phone.
To be fair (and yes they did try that buyers remorse trick), there is a chance they did have a online server issue. I work for a Internet cable company. A lot of times when I get gaming console customers not able to use certain games online, they have to open up ports via router provided by the game or console companies. Still, they were just trying to get their money back unjustly.
When I worked at a game store we would not take people's junk to "throw out." Too much of a liability, since some people who would come in would definitely be the type to see something similar to what they were trying to sell on the shelf, and claim that it was theirs and we ripped them off.
Exactly. Next thing you know, there are BS videos on RUclips or Facebook that their items were secretly fixed and resold, and that you're a scammer. Better to let them leave with their stuff.
Plus you can get one now for around $80 or so. That is what my super slim 250 cost me back in November or so. About the best deal you can get IMO since it plays DVD's, Blu-Ray's and has all the apps such as Netflix, Hulu, Amazon and VUDU.
@@paulobulko7633 My brother's PS3 was one of the best DVD and Blu-Ray players my family had. He played a bunch of games on it, and watched movies on it.
Because they didn't actually want it. They probably wanted it for the weekend to show it off to their friends and then return it once the excitement for it went away. Once they realized what they just did and that they couldn't return it, then the regret set in.
Had a similar situation with a ps3, said it would freeze on GTA V. Brought it into the store, worked fine every time we tested it. Worked 100% fine. Also have tons of college housing here, had many issues where someone bought a system and then tried to return it because their WiFi wasn’t up t snuff.
The best solution for a retrogame store would be to offer rentals on everything, but make customers put down the full purchase price so they're out that and the rental fee if they don't bring it back on time in the condition they got it.
I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if the PS3 really didn’t work with the games they bought. In 2008 I bought a used 60gb PS3 (launch model, this was shortly after it was discontinued) and that thing barely ever worked. Depending on the game it would either work fine for hours, or work fine for a few minutes. I really couldn’t get past a few minutes into some games before it would lock up and freeze. And I’ve taken it to all sorts of game stores and repair shops over the years who’ve worked on it and whatever and tested it, okayed it, what have you, the problem is always “solved” or even “not detected” to begin with. I used it primarily as a Blu Ray machine and it worked fine for that, still does. And luckily most modes in GTA 5 worked fine without locking the game up, but I would say I could not progress in say most of the games I purchased for it. GTA 4 would lock up during cutscenes so I could never do missions. RE5 would last maybe 10-15 minutes before locking up, I was eventually able to make it through the game thanks to autosave checkpoints that allowed me to reboot the console regularly. Beatles rockband cost me like hundreds of dollars in stupid plastic instruments that I couldn’t use because the game would freeze in the middle of a song. I could go on.... the PS3 was just unreliable, but some games would be fine and depending on what you tested it with it could have worked “fine” for you too
Wade Wilson yeah I definitely take good care of all my consoles and this one still works as well as it ever did for me (which is to say, not great) but we really did everything we could. We moved it to every possible wide open area of the room when it was thought that it might be a ventilation issue. Tried more than one external accessory cooler. The inside was cleaned several times, and at one point the main board even had all its solder points re-flowed by a professional. If there was anything that could be done, we did it. On the plus side, ps2 and ps1 backwards compatibility always worked without any issues, so I at least still have a good machine to play those on and I really love a lot of those games.
Now after getting an Xbox One X a few months ago, that pulls duty as my new main Blu Ray player so I don’t have to worry about wear and tear on a system that’s nearly 15 years old and was already unreliable to begin with. and I’m also rebuying a lot of my old PS3 games as Xbox one games, at least whichever ones were ported or backwards compatible from the 360 version, so at least now I can finally play some of them! Finally completing GTA 4 without random crashes is next on my list lol
"I got them out of my fucking hair." Looking back on my experiences with customers, sometimes that's about the only satisfaction you get from an interaction, so I feel this.

I was a small child so I didn't fully understand I just knew my parents would be gifted store credit that they would sometimes use to buy me games or toys lol.
I used to work at KB Toys and in retail for 12 years and some customers are assholes! There are good and really shitty people out there. I had a guy try to return a ps2 that he switched in the box. He opened it from the bottom so the seal wasn't broken and put his broken dirty as hell ps2 in there lol. I busted him and called him out on BS. He was not happy LMAO. Thankfully I no longer work in the toxic waste dump of retail any more.
I'm manager at a small indie store in Canada, SO MANY people just try to pass a fast one like this to get free rentals; "Oh well the console does not work." Yeah right. We do offer refund in 7 days now. Decide if you want to buy it BEFORE buying it! I love the polite "fuck yous" after nearly 15 years I'm a master at it! hahaha! Oh and Pat that resolution is the best, customer got a working PS3!
This reminds me of shit that my mom deals with on a regular basis working at Lowes, people will come in buy a tool then within a week return it no doubt after they have finished whatever project they are working on.
when I used to frequent my local video game shops when I was younger I would see shit like this all the time Ian is totally right there is no end to people like this I can guess how the story will end but I still look forward to hearing it from Ian
Stories like this are why I'm glad I don't work at Gamestop anymore. Also had the misfortune of working at Target during the early Xbox 360 days, although back then you couldn't return/exchange opened games period. It was always interesting to see what stories people would come up with to not acknowledge that they bumped the system and burned that telltale ring into the disc. I had every CS person in my store trained to look for that ring.
I know the original DS and I think PSP only supported outdated WiFi encryption (was it WEP?). (DS WiFi only being useful for homebrew WFC and maybe some elaborate ROM dumping stuff. PSP I think couldn't even directly download from PSN by the end as a result, requiring me to get the last few games I bought on PSN for it by using the PC app with USB transfer.)
I thought about selling my PS3 and all of the games i own for it to have more money to buy PS4 games but told myself no you will regret it and have to take the time to buy everything back. Had buyers remorse on a few systems I've bought recently but then thought well I'll enjoy them.
I am surprised you didn't offer to buy it back at what the store offers for used working games and systems. Could have told them "just consider the loss as a renters fee for your party with friends" Rare few of the mom and pop games stores do rental deals similar to that (I have been to only one though that did)
situations like this in our store we just present them the option of selling it back to the store and explain the money they've lost on it is just rental fee :D
So I wonder if any game stores have a premium collector section for items that come in that are literally like new and mint. Those are usually worth a small premium over retail due to their pristine condition. I would think there would be a demand for those sort of items and it might be worth charging slightly more for them. I wonder if any game stores do that?
Did you check the serial number on the PS3? Sounds more like they had a broken one, wanted to buy a working one, swap them out and try and return the broken one they had in the first place this getting their broken PS3 replaced for free......
You should keep like $10 or $20 in pennies for situations like this. Ask him for ID to prove it's his birthday, then offer him literally oodles of pennies for it. Double points if he walked or biked there. I think it'd be worth the money. You're repaying an inconvenience with an inconvenience.
Look i understand trying to take advantage of a bigger chain at the end of the day fuck em they can take the hit, but don't fuck with small business their barley making money as it is...
So what would have happened if they went so far as to open up the PS3 and disconnect the internal Wi-Fi adapter to try to return it to you? Would you have noticed, and banned them. I'm just guessing that the Wi-Fi adapter is possible to disconnect.
why dont you guys offer a system "rental" where they pay whatever the price of the system is. but if they return it without falt that you will charge them % of the console value. say its a $150 console and youll only give them back $75 - $100 unless a valid fault has occured.
The thing I dont get (and that lends SOME creedence to the guys' story) is: why buy it in the first place? They knew they weren't get their money back before they bought it, right? Maybe they felt embarassed and didn't want to back out, thus admitting what they had planned? Also, if this happens enough times, why doesnt Luna start renting out systems?
I wonder how many people have been trolling and/or will be trolling Ian since they’ve been doing this. Poor guy might have added a lot more stress to his days because someone wants to be mentioned on their podcast.
I'm no expert, I wondered if they must of had terrible internet at those 2 guys place. Because there were times were I tried some games online freezes up or lagged due to reception. and place I live at does have terrible internet. Also out of all the consoles I've owned, never had a broken one except for Sega Genesis III Unit.

I did not expect there to be a cliffhanger, but I'm hyped. Tales of the Gamestore: Endgame. -Matt
God bless your patience Ian, I don’t have the personality or patience for BS
2:50 So you will help recycle systems for people, unless they annoy you. Come on man. Gotta be better than that.
The casing is worth approximately 3 cents in scrap metal, you'd have to have more than one to get a pound though, so 2 casing are worth about 7 cents
Kinda wanna play my PS3 now
Why wasn't it wrong for pat returning the clippers? Because it didn't affect your shoddy used game store?
I now assume you're one of the "Young Men" from Ian's story.
You're one moronic clown
By far the best bit and intro evvvveeerrrr
We need an unsolved mysteries style update to this story
16:32 Pat, you sound like Jerry Seinfield at this part
They realized the cod servers were all hacked and wanted their money back ahah
The mega Saturday fun-pack edition was great 😂
Can’t wait to hear the shocking conclusion to PS3 Return Regret next time on Tales from the Game Store!!!!
"Can you mine the gold from the chips?"
That intro is awesome 👌
Ian, you and your colleagues have the patience of a saint!
when I used to frequent my local video game shops when I was younger I would see shit like this all the time Ian is totally right there is no end to people like this I can guess how the story will end but I still look forward to hearing it from Ian
*UPDATE*
Stories like this are why I'm glad I don't work at Gamestop anymore. Also had the misfortune of working at Target during the early Xbox 360 days, although back then you couldn't return/exchange opened games period. It was always interesting to see what stories people would come up with to not acknowledge that they bumped the system and burned that telltale ring into the disc. I had every CS person in my store trained to look for that ring.
Ian looks like Episode 2 Obi-Wan and now you'll never unsee it.
I don't see it.
Pat how do you feel about dave leaving gamesack. I'm devastated 😭
Keep em coming Ian these are hilarious lol
I thought about selling my PS3 and all of the games i own for it to have more money to buy PS4 games but told myself no you will regret it and have to take the time to buy everything back. Had buyers remorse on a few systems I've bought recently but then thought well I'll enjoy them.
That was a cool intro. I used to love tales from the cript.
OMG that into! 😍💕
Jon Kratz intro?
They may have been “young men,” but they certainly weren’t Young Fresh Fellows.
Pat " I hope thos doesnt offend fans of tales from the game store." Ian " I dont give a shit." 😆
I am surprised you didn't offer to buy it back at what the store offers for used working games and systems.
Could have told them "just consider the loss as a renters fee for your party with friends"
Rare few of the mom and pop games stores do rental deals similar to that (I have been to only one though that did)
I understand they can't do cash returns but maybe they could offer to buy it back at 50% to 75% (restocking fee) These dudes were CRAZY!
They were probably in cahoots with the first guy who tried to sell the broken ps3
Lel Ian trucking off the intro 😝
situations like this in our store we just present them the option of selling it back to the store and explain the money they've lost on it is just rental fee :D
I don't care that this ended on a cliff hanger, still the best thing I've heard all week. Thanks for your suffering Ian.
This is why selling gaming consoles to the public can really suck.
Love the intro
I feel like they were so stuck in their lies that they felt like they had to stick it out and keep going with it and hope you will change your mind
Maybe you could do rentals for systems with a security deposit if they break it and charge like 25 bucks for the week.
Gunna need an update Ian
I've had this exact scenario play out in my shops 100s of times... smh
This is the best part of the podcast
You should keep like $10 or $20 in pennies for situations like this. Ask him for ID to prove it's his birthday, then offer him literally oodles of pennies for it. Double points if he walked or biked there. I think it'd be worth the money. You're repaying an inconvenience with an inconvenience.
You want a free rental?
Go to gamestop, grab a preowned game m, beat it within 7 days and return it to gamestop with receipt for your money back!
Look i understand trying to take advantage of a bigger chain at the end of the day fuck em they can take the hit, but don't fuck with small business their barley making money as it is...
lucky you did not take the 360 in for recycling, some douches then claim you just wanted to rip them off( suggesting you will sell the parts).
Love the intro!
I wonder how many people have been trolling and/or will be trolling Ian since they’ve been doing this. Poor guy might have added a lot more stress to his days because someone wants to be mentioned on their podcast.
Damn you Scuba Steve!
