1:20 for all you rookie drivers, Don t pay attention to this part, they won't fire you if you take 3 days off after staying out only 7 days out, me I stayed out 10 and stayed home 3 every time since I started. Just be friendly to your dispatcher and he won't tell you nothing. Now if he's a complete a hole, just request a change.but that 1 week for 1 day home time is complete non sense, some Asian dispatcher tried to get me on that as I got changed dispatchers for whatever reason and I was nice to him but I told him I don't go by the 1 week 1 day thing, or if that's the way you're running your fleet then I'll put my 2 weeks notice rn. He stopped that real quick.
Thank you for your videos- have learned so much about our profession from you! And btw, whenever I have a question when I’m at a truck stop, I always ask a flatbedder, because you all are approachable & right to the point. Ex# 1- My 1st time scaling/tandems, a flatbedder was parked next to the scale. I had no clue what to do. I walked up to him (he was sitting in the cab) & asked how far I should move the tandems. He looked at my ticket & explained to me in less than 2 minutes the entire process & why. Amazing! My trainer shld’ve taught me all that- just didn’t care....many times flatbedders have helped me & I thank you guys 🙏🏻 .....on the highway, you terrify me 🤣 and I slow down & let you go ahead, but I really do appreciate you all!
I'm fortunate the regional flat bed company has me home Friday afternoon, in general (obviously there are no guarantees) every week. But it isn't the norm, I know that as new as I am.
Also, Brian has mentioned finances and credit on this channel 100 times for a reason. I am just getting out of debt. And I am gonna take a few years to save and get my own truck, thanks to his advice. Set myself up on the front end so I am not scrambling on the back end. Thanks Brian! Can't wait for the app!

Mine is more like greed. Once you look at what you need to cover your bills on a daily basis makes life much easier. To many people don't know there needs are and understand how to make money. I need 210 dollars a day to cover my expenses that home and trucking that just bills not fuel and not taxes and income. Any one can make money it's how to make a profit. Been a o/o for 20years and driving for 30 years
My truck and trailer are paid for now wasn't easy. Now I consider trucking my hobby. Also now I have the option of saying no.
Get yourself a wife that will truck with you and buy a huge extended sleeper truck and take the kids with you and homeschool them in the truck. Also save money with your family and buy trucks to make a company. I went back to being company driver and I get 2-5 days off after every trip
Did you do that with your kids for years? Take them with you and home school then in the truck?
It is a harsh reality. I had an '03 freightliner classic. 4 months in, the motor blew up. I learned CAT is probably close to double the price of a rebuild as compared to a Detroit.
As for taxes, I don't know if this is an option in the US, but in Canada we can... anyways , I do my taxes yearly rather than quarterly. That way I get a cheque from the government for all the tax write offs, then turn around and give them back money for my taxes. Thet way, there's no problem to pay, money is right there

OTR can be a grind when u never know when your going home and on the road weeks or MONTHS at a time regional is nice because u can look forward to home evry 5 or 6 days
I'm about to be 50 and this will be my 2nd career already retired from the 1st now on to my 2nd plus now I'm allowed to drive being a type 1 diabetic lol and yes I'm super healthy.
Brian, been watching you and Sammy for a while now. I retired from 27 years of banking 6 years ago and went for my CDL. Drove for Roehl (.31 cents per mile.) only 7 months doing exactly what you just stated. Then!! I went to a company here in southern Maine as a company driver for 1 year, purchased my existing 2016 Cascadia from Lone Mountain and leased it to the same company which I’m still doing now. They are sneaky! They have a side broker business which they don’t tell you about. They only sell the OO on making 70% of the load but don’t tell them AFTER a 20-30% broker fee. What a rip off…be careful guys! I wanted to get my authority in May and but a trailer but can’t find a new trailer right now. Big shorthair on new trailers. Would love to meet you and Sammy some day! I just paid my truck off in May as well!! In my opinion the best way to do this business is with your own authority and equipment and run those load boards. These carriers take a lot of the profit. I figure I’ve been working for 50 cents on the dollar for 4 plus years now.

He just told you. Unless you make a cash purchase, financially, you will become a slave to that truck. As long as the truck stays relatively break down free, you can make just as much money with a used $15k truck as a brand new $150k truck.

@@nattydreadlocks1973 how much does a used truck after treatment cost? How about the down time? How about your reputational damage of missing a deadline and cost of a tow? Doesn’t sound any less of a slave to the truck than a new vehicle payment.
@@josephbrauch1361 The best set up for a new o/o is a pre emmisions truck. Look for the years between 2000-2007ish. No after treatment. Cheaper parts. Less down time. These trucks can be purchased every day, all day for less then $25k. But sense you brought it up, I believe you already knew that.

How does one get a truck and trailer? The rental companies want fleets of 5, and 3 years in business when renting the trailer. I can get the truck, but buying or renting the trailer is a problem. Any thoughts?

I definitely feel stuck. Working for a pretty good company, but stuck in that 1 day off for 6 out, etc. Never have time to do anything and it sucks only getting paid for miles. Always delays, traffic, accidents, long lines in the store just to get food or whatever. Exhausted at the end of the day which sometimes becomes 11-14hrs and the very small amount of time at the end of the day goes to showering, eating, talking with a loved one, and pretty much 0 time for personal development at all like reading books, managing finances strategically, job searching, etc. Anyways not meaning to complain but just putting it out there.....this sh!t is real and truckers have no life.
I was not being taken care of, so I went up the chain of command in the company. Have a new fleet manager and operations manger. I now have a days off. Things will change you need to stand up and say something. If you don't they will just keep taking advantage of you. Great videos thanks.
The key is knowing your worth. Like models, we are talent, in most cases much less physically attractive... but we are the talent.. You see a terminal that has 50-100 trucks just sitting there.... You tell them how often and how long you want to be home. They would rather have you run 1600 miles a week in four days, vs. having that 150k truck do nothing. The most powerful word in the world is.... No. Stand your ground.
It amazes me how often i go for a load on the board and ask for more, they say no, i say ok Good luck then. 1 minute later the load is up for more.

Lol. I have no idea how a person can live in a closet with a bed for weeks at a time. Crazy. I'm out one night home the next with weekends off. No trouble spinning a profit.
A new o/o should buy a brand new truck. Never buy someone else's problems. Do your research and don't buy brand loyal. This year peterbilt makes a good truck, next year might be Mack. Read the reviews

I agreed ... but what is the point of working if I can’t get the car I desire and motivate me to go to work , what is the point of working it I can’t get decent meal or decent quality shoes or etc ... again you live ones theirs no second life it’s only one life enjoy work hard and also get shiny out there ... you make $ to spend wisely sure ... but also don’t hold back ones in while you like the tings you want .. but always get the things you need .. it’s life you work towards things you desire in life ... theirs no such a things of keep saving saving saving n sniffing $ no very wrong I’m sorry cuz us truckers been truck driver , it only takes one time to end your life one and two yes everything possible in life to happened good or bad so yeah Managing $ yes but also buy the car you like , but the shoe you like , go eat good quality food .. you working for what ? Great timing on the video I have a friend of mine who is trying to get get me to leave the company I work for now and and buy my own truck and come to work with him and get my own authority. He has offered to help me buy my 1st truck run under him for 6 months under his contracts and his numbers After 6 months the truck would be my responsibility And to be quite honest that scares the hell out of me because I know I'm not great with money

@@eternitywithjesus777 I work for a good company, they are great to me and my family. The other guy actually helped me get my CDL, but he was running under someone else's authority, and the bottom fell out. Since then he got his own authority and has some great contracts and he's making a killing. But I'm not only in it for the money, I truly love driving, both are great companies, so it's a tough choice. Thanks for the advice
Anyone who buys a truck in today's market is backing up and probably will never recover... Turnover is 125% in the trucking business... I been in the business 34 years and wouldn't wish this career on my worst enemies... I wouldn't allow any of my 3 sons to do it... I made more money in the 90's then you can make today but expenses have tripled compared to then... The trucking industry will consume you and cost you everything that is true and dear to your heart constantly being away from friends and family to never be wealthy on any level... Just two cents from a lifer in the career... Best of luck.
If you cant finance try to save uo money.
I know a guy who bought his Peterbilt (1985?) From a guy selling it with cash. Then used some of his budget to put in a new engine when the old one finally gave out.
This was before diesel prices doubled. Imagine the story now :(

Bro, Do you remember when you bought your drop down visor? You had it custom made and when you picked up the truck you were stoked. All subscribers were happy for you. Why? Because we watched your struggles and we went through some of your hard times. Finally you got a break and could afford to do something cool for yourself. The reason I bring this up is because life is about decision making. With those decisions comes consequences. Good or bad a consequence always follows a decision. Your truck is in the background of this video and I remember that drop down visor. That decision is in this video and you are an inspiration to us all. Our country is full of opportunity and not everyone is meant to be a trucker let alone an owner operator. Thanks for being you and staying real. Here's question, for the people who have Service Dogs who go with them.
I am going to a school through Schneider. I have a 5 year old service dog that I need to have with me at all times. He needs to get trained just like I do, with the semi. Does anyone out there have experience with how people with dogs, in particular ex military, feel about their own experiences related to needing the dog with you through school?
Use your GI bill to go to a non trucking company affiliated school so that you aren’t tied to a large company by contract. Find a quality school and you wont have any issues with people being respectful of your needs.
@@richardpearce2186 I have paying for school set. It's taking my SD with me, to train him to be in and around huge trucks (the logistics between getting in POV trucks and a semi) because of the noises and such, that I am asking about.
Several trucking school wouldn't accept me bringing my dog. He is non-negotiable.
A dog in a truck is a close as you can get to animal cruelty without actually committing animal cruelty. How many hours of exercise and fresh air a day do you think your dog is going to get? Your dog will wind up being that lion, in the cage, at the zoo, walking back and forth. Sad.

To be honest (my opinion) if you can't bear riding along in the truck alone, you haven't taken the time to figure out your own life. I think too many people distract themselves with music and other entertainment when they are driving down the road.

Im loving truck life.!!!..i wish i did this profession 10 yrs ago..im leasing right now so i can learn the business.
