You should get OO advice from Indian Truckers. They never go out of business. They keep it simple and profitable
I bought mine from an owner op. He was trucking for over 40 years. 32 of those leases on to Landstar. He was 70 years old. He specked the truck for himself how he likes to run. He’s was proactive about all his maintenance. It’s clean. Non smoker. He did long runs on the highways. He loved his truck and cared for it. I bought it in December. We still talk on the phone. We are friends now and I keep him updated with photos etc. I got exactly what I was looking for in a truck. Everything you mentioned is 100% true. I paid cash for mine. I’m running my own authority. I do most of my own maintenance. My overheads are low. Insurance fuel and service on the truck. But it’s all possible because I bought an owner operator truck. ☘️

I’m thinking about buying a used truck with cash too. No payments. I’m 38, single, no family, so I can literally hit the road with no expenses other than running the truck and feeding myself.
When you have no truck payment and live in the truck pretty much does that basically ensure success? I’m still afraid I’d go broke 🤦♂️. What do you gross and net per week with your paid for truck ? I can spend 50-100k on a truck and still have plenty left for emergencies. But I’m afraid I’ll never make the money back
But basically I want to buy a truck in full and lease on to some big company like landstar to get loads. At least starting out. Yet again I’m afraid. It’s such a big gamble. It’s money my dad left me and I want to be wise with it

The maintenance book is what sold my truck. Had fuel mileage written down every fill up and that's pretty much what sold mine

Bro, Being an owner operator is an entrepreneural venture. Like with all business owners one must first create a business plan. Upon the formation of such said plan one must conduct extensive research and analyze risk versus reward. The way you broke down how to buy a truck was clear and respectful, plus people hearing that you was once a car sale's person gives credit to what you are saying.
I was always told by the older generation that the history of how the vehicle work's and the repair history plus the good, the bad and the ugly side owning the vehicle is the person to trust, especially if they have all or the majority of the paperwork with date's and time of the repair, they have the paperwork to prove that they have the authority to sell the vehicle.
But also if they say to you that you can have the vehicle checked independently and do not offer any garage or mechanic to do the check for you.

Yes many owner operators don't even have 3 months prudent reserve.. you need 6 months to be a business owner. More money won't fix bad behavior.

Excellent advice man, I’m pretty fortunate to have a good friend that owns a semi mechanic shop and he’s really helped me out keeping me from buying a lemon . I’d definitely recommend taking someone like that with you when you go to look at a truck, they will see or hear things that may be wrong that you may miss.

I go through a truck top to bottom, I never buy new and always have had good luck. Prime example I bought my 1st truck with 350k now it’s over 800k with no emission issues etc. take care of your equipment and stop being cheap. Now I have 2 trucks

If not the most important decision you will ever make in trucking it’s right there. The right truck for your vertical is critical. A heavy haul truck is not the answer for a tanker hauler. Buy from an O/O in the vertical you want to haul in.

2 of my 2 friends trucking in Canada own new trucks so I got someone to get advices, only for new truck, cant wait but gotta wait a bit, will go with packages hauling for first 2y but dont know letter cos we will move so prob will get one to haul with eazy all kind of box/fridge loads anyway. I always wannit to go for Mack Anthem but seams like will have to go for Freightliner cos we got many shops/garages around and my friend got one so he knows deals, problems etc. Cant wait🙌

I think I saw an older video of yours where you talked about most of the trade-ins being fleet trucks driven and maintained by who knows who. I think that's accurate and that the "good deal" truck is likely one that they know has been abused.
I bought my wife's Honda because it was a two year local lease trade in with an excellent maintenance record. You can find a lot on line these days unlike the guessing game I grew up with.
Before buying a truck have good work lined up work out your costs what your profit will be,do fairly local work to start buy a fairly old truck that is well maintaned walk before you run,i done this then after about 10 years bought new with a 3 year warranty plan including servicing and breakdown changed every 3 years got about 40 per cent of original value back on to next truck best way you dont earn money when wheels aint turning . enjoyed listen, all the best from the UK

I was going to get my license through the night I just saw I'm actually considering purchasing my own truck but unfortunately I'm a poor man so I got to buy play bottom and one probably 40 maybe maybe 50 but I don't know you have to start out small
I always look at hours vs miles. Ecm reports. Lifetime.
Fyi all you haters out there on paccar. I'm about to turn 800k zero leaks, ect 6.8 mpg lifetime and I'm hauling heavy most the time since I'm flatbedding. But I do lots of maintenance. It could blow up at any sec.. haha!
Dyno The motor and check the blow by. That will tell you what kind of shape that motors in👍👍

I was considering buying a new truck the problem is its going to be new. The reason its heavy haul spec. Used heavy haul trucks are usually warned out 2nd most of them aren't built to my spec & last for as much as they want for them you might as well go new 🤷♂️ just the nature of the beast

In the Netherlands they are forced by law to have a maintenance records Old-school so on papers or online don't understand why you guys don't have that over in the states, greetings from the Netherlands

Well, this was a helpful video. I just cannot say I've done most of the things that was mentioned myself. I'm going to have to trust that even so, i was initially kept from buying something previously that would have been most regretful to say the least. I am trusting that i heard right from the Holy Spirit and thus didn't falter when i made the decision to purchase this time. I'm still concerned about things but hopefully it's just a healthy concern that will keep me on course. I'm asking for prayers and continued discernment too. Hold me Jesùs!

as it’s original very tidy
No leaks everything is all done and he showed me receipts.
Runs starts drives sweet he’s still doing work with it gets it tuned every 3 months and only selling as bought a new Peter built and is fixing his 909 that caught fire and burnt the electrics other wise he be keeping it. Just worries me kms and rebuild costs in au for a Cummins

I just bought a 2015 kw t680
Since i have brought many trucks from new to used from 13g to 250g will always have a third party inspection done. The newest truck is a old maverick truck with 2yr factory warranty and new dpf filters. First 3 months all new sencer in the dpf no money out of pocket but lost revenue. As for buying from a o/o without a inspection you would be a fool . 250 dollars a third party inspection would be the key. I put a o/o though hell and back before i bought the truck.. my last truck still had warranty on it had a guy come and look at it and brought his mechanic his mechanic said buy the truck he couldn't find anything wrong . The dealer i deal with does western star most are o/o that moved up a big house. I also watched a truck blow the motor on the dyno when trading in. Good advice grasshopper be safe i will send you a pick of my conestoga when its done next week
Yep....stay away from fleet junk, young hotshot cowboys, and new oil changes.
Get a dyno, blow-by, and oil analysis.....and pull the valve cover.

Would like your opininon on a used 2020 kwt680 fleet turnover truck at an MCH kw dealership, they have a bunch in their dealership network with mileage anywhere from 335k to 350k miles (haven't seen any over that mark) , its a 10 speed eaton fuller with that mx-13 paccar engine, all the models have had the camshafts and I can't remember what else replaced. They all have a 7 year/700k mile warranty on major engine components, and are asking 55k for any of them, some are cleaner in the interior than others. I test drove one, and I rocked the wheels, and it had a bit of a squeak, when I test drove it had a wobble in the steering wheel, (a bad bearing?) so they didn't road test it , they said they inpected it but would fix any issue I didn't like or find at no cost if I were serious ebough to buy it. They offered an extended warranty that covered everything that went from $4k first 100k miles, then $8k 250k miles, the 11k for 350k miles with $350 deductible per occurance for somthing that needed fixed, real gimicky on how they set those prices. An old coworker of mine bought a used freighliner and got one of those warranties said they were b.s. and never got a payout on one
I could never be an owner op. I'm a debt free kind of guy and if I had $200k to throw down on a truck I'd rather invest it.
Even used I'd need a year's worth of fuel, insurance, and a maintenance account.
Just too much overhead to get a decent system going. I just wish there was seasonal trucking jobs as I like to power it out for a year or two barely going home then take a 3-4 month vacation but every job wants u there 6 out of 7 365
You can spend 60-80k and get a GREAT used truck

So if you want to buy as an owner-operator no matter where you buy it from besides knowing everything about that truck mechanically or otherwise you at least need a good down payment 20% and you better have about 10 to 20 thousand dollars behind you sitting in the bank that in case something happens you're able to continue with your adventure. But before you buy a truck as an owner operator or even least one from a company which is really ridiculous you need to spend two to three years as a company driver and document every expenditure you do or that truck does. It may be hard to do to find out all the financial wear and tear on that truck specially a company truck but if you do that including the food and stuff you buy on the road and that you're able to come up with a good financial plan as far as your expenditures and what that truck and your situation on the road is going to cost you. Plus talk to a good truck tax accountant and have him give me some ideas of what you're going to be paying on that truck as far as Highway tax use tax sales tax any other tax that's required to be in the trucking industry and any other expenditures. There's more to it than just buying a truck and jumping in and and going down the road again this is the crop duster just spreading it around.
How about leasing one? Its insured and youll pay small in a longer time frame
I was owner owrator 33 years ago for 12 years it was a fortune driven san Diego to Washington making really really good money.....after that competition started......I have to drive 48 states to make the same money....this days your almost begging for a load.......

To buy a new truck it's always the best deal, you gonna have issues for sure. But they'll be nothing internal all around the truck.

Another great video Brian. I 100% agree with you. If you’re just shopping around the truth is you never really know what you’re going to get. That’s why I am so glad that we got lucky with our Kenworth. We bought it relatively inexpensive, but the gentleman I bought it from kept very good records. And before I bought it he handed me the keys and said do what you want with it and then we’ll talk afterwards. So he gave me the chance to go completely over the truck. I had the keys for two weeks before he actually paid him any money. No it’s not likely that anyone else is going to find a seller so awesome. But I already knew the guy And had been talking to him about trying to get the truck from him for over a year.

Do a video on finding the right finance companies for first time owner operators and to stay away from brokers. Those fly by night finance companies will double the amount of the truck on interest alone and the brokers get kickbacks off that high interest rates. It's a damn shame!
We are contracted on with North American Van lines. So we get to take advantage of their insurance discounts.
Maybe a dumb question but if I buy a truck that's governed at 65mph how hard would it be to have the governor disabled, or at least set higher? Also, if I'm leasing am I even allowed to mess with that?
I'm looking into getting a used, kinda older truck. Options range from a Kenworth t800 or 600 with a c-15 or isx, or a fartliner with a series 60. I have done lots of work on the earlier (02-06?) Detroit 60's, but the allure of the cat is what I really want. Not the twin turbo deal, but the t800 that I drove for the last company I worked for was a total beast and yeah, 5mpg isn't great but the power? Yeah, it had it. Buying a truck from an owner operator can be hit n miss tho, a lot of them push them to the absolute limit, only fix things when they break, and PM only when they have to. If I do go through with this, stockpiling parts and keeping the drivetrain clean and inspected, I'm hoping to save money that this guy has to spend. I don't care about paint, don't care about looks, pure reliability and function. I also work at a tire recycling business, and sometimes we get good truck tires too, which should save me some cash too. As a diesel mechanic the best advice I could give, don't buy a truck with a newer paccar or anything newer with all the emissions b.s, it just cloggs the system up and makes for unnecessary problems

Kenworth and Peterbilt have the best resale value, Freightliner comes third, International and Volvo are at the bottom. So that being said it kind of tells you who is best, I like Freightliners personally, better vision and tons of dealers. Western Star is probably with Freightliner in that mix.

Purchasing a truck to go into business hinges on what business are you going into. Is it dry van, refrigeration, flatbed, lowboy, tankers - dry bulk, liquid, food grade, hazmat, gas, or is the business plan to do heavy hauling like logs, construction equipment, ... WHAT? Going into business is just that, business. You need the counsel of an attorney, accountant, banking and loan guidance, insurance types - blanket, umbrella, risk management advice, etc.
If you think about it, like any business it's WHO YOU KNOW, means a lot more than WHAT YOU KNOW. Who do you know that's going to help you pay the bills? This thing that you're going to buy - finance, is going to be your home for a lot of years.. a lot of years. Affordability has to be matched with your mental state of mind has to reinforced with something when things go wrong and your literally stuck - broke - with a 2X4 up your butt and down-n-out for weeks at a time. So, if you don't know what freight you're going after, the places were you're going to be sent - and why, what equipment you have for whatever comes your way... DON'T SIGN ANY PAPER FOR A TRUCK. You're better off slinging hash in an all night dinner. Trust me ... been there... done that ... got the Tee shirt!

Why are trucks listed for sale in Canada, notably cheaper than those listed in the US? Is there a significant tax or other reason not to buy from a Canadian seller?

So its like with anything that we purchase and dont make ourselves, nothing is guarantee to get what you want out of it and is going to be perfect. from a semi truck to a car to a cake at the bakery.

What I maintain at the moment is just natural, throughout this year I’ll be getting back in shape and talking about diet, fitness, etc 👍🏻
So if the odds of making it as an o/o is so low, why not lease a truck from a dealership? If a person can't make a go of it, he/she could just return the rig, and have to pay off a rig that was bought.

I'm buying mine through the company im with the first truck was 48,000 the motor locked up after 2 months now im in a freightliner im putting more money into this truck the first was a 16 this one is a 14 and if you get a freightliner if your a/c go's out your truck will over heat

Semi truck market looks to be just as messed up as the light duty pick-up truck market! People need to chill with the insane prices like there 20 year truck worth more than $60k, if it has in frame, new clutch, u joints, gears, seals, and no leaks than maybe I can justify it!

Never buy a newer truck than that. Rebuildable trucks are the best bang for the buck.

Fleet maintOned isually means 10 pounds of gunk amd carbon buildup in the head. Rank bearings that are scored and a turbo that is seaping oil. Be careful.
