It brings back happy memories.i grew up in Malvern….one year we took train to Philadelphia to watch parade on Broad St…was so exciting to see it in person(at age 13) (later, many yrs ago moved to Florida….) still miss those days of long ago…
It is our family tradition for us to see the Mummers even since I was a little girl & always wind up interacting with them whether it is to take a picture with one or strut with them, whatever it is.... they are ALL awesome and greatly appreciate all the love, dedication and work that is put in to it every year. Never any complaints here.
This is a really fantastic video - really appreciated all it captures! Just seeing it now, and it makes me miss my Philly traditions! (I gotta get back to the parade, maybe this week!:) Thanks Erin ~ Happy Christmas 2018 and Happy New Year to you 2019
We used to live in NJ for a long time... now since we live in FL, we never see the mummers parade. Thank you for videoing a piece of it. :-) I have missed this for 18 years
We aim to interact and entertain as many people as we can on our march up the street. Unfortunately some years the parade is not moving at the speed the city would like it to and we are forced to accelerate our pace and keep moving. Glad you have enjoyed it and keep coming out to support us all. Thank you!!!
I was surprised to see so many people interacting with the mummers. I remember when that was not allowed. We stayed on the sidewalk and sometimes followed them walking on the sidewalk, but never in the street.
These parades always freaked me out when I was a kid. The ultra-bizarre costumes and that strange way that Mummers dance. And -- can you believe it? Mummers doing blackface! (1:30)
Very many of these songs were made famous by, Al Jolson - back in the 20's, 30', 40's... and beyond !! Certainly, one of the greatest entertainers to take to the stage during this era - and, never any thoughts, hints or comments about "blackface" that I have heard through the generations which I have been around. It was all entertainment - which is exactly, the context in which this parade is being celebrated. No political "correctness" here... thank gosh !!! It's such a breath of fresh air to simply just enjoy the music and happy atmostphere of this wonderful and carefree occasion.
I am in riverfront don't say we were diaqualiied. We just weren't judged and @marco gentile we aren't we just walk up ( if u don't have a pin u can't go up) unless ur in riverfront then ur awesome
Go back to the old routines and costumes. The music gets lost in the dancing, and moving around. The costumes have also become outlandish. I much prefer to watch the routines from the 1970's , 80's and 90's. I even enjoy the older routines from the 50's and 60's.
I don't care what anyone says. I love seeing the mummers parade. I love enjoying myself and listening to the music from the string bands that go by.

I don't believe black face is allowed anymore. But they still do brown face (as in Latino) and red face (as in Amerind).
Blackface was prohibited in 1963.
