    FORGOT TO LEAVE A COMMENT AS I UPLOADED, OH NO!!
    Thanks for watching everyone, hope you're all excited for Part 3!
    As a pre-warning incase you don't get to the end of the video, Part 3 MAY be a little later than normal due to February being a BUSY month for me. I'm also gonna see if I can make Part 3 a LONG video, but if I feel its getting a little too long then I'll just have to split it up. Hope you understand!!
    In the mean time, Podcasts will be coming out and if there's too big of a gap between content, you'll get TWO podcasts! :3

    Honestly, I think the sidequest that hit me the hardest was Operator 21O's sidequest, and even then it didn't hit me until halfway through Route C/D (at which point it hit me like a goddamned brick to the face).
    *S P O I L E R S !*
    You begin Route B with a stone-cold, no-nonsense Operator, but throughout 21O's sidequest she has you bring her information about Ancient Earth (back when the humans were still around) that she can analyze for fun, and as it happens all the information you bring her has one common theme - the human familial social structure, a topic that 21O seems to express great interest and investment in. By the time the opening to Route C/D rolls around, 21O is no longer anywhere near as standoffish as she started out, and is instead talking to 9S in what seems to be a condescending manner, complete with deliberately slowed cadence and seemingly insincere compliments, with 9S remarking that she's talking to him as if he were a child.
    And it's because she IS.
    Operator 21O analyzed all of the data on the human familial social structure you brought her and it caused her to desire to experience what it was like for herself. It was already clear that, despite her initial demeanor, 21O truly cared about 9S, and once Route C/D begins she's even gone so far as to start addressing him as if he were her kid brother, because that is exactly how she has come to see him - her younger brother that tries hard and sometimes makes mistakes, but that she cares for immensely no matter what.
    Now fast-foreward to Operator 21O's bossfight halfway through Route C/D; fast-foreward to the the exact moment all of this hits you all at once at the EXACT SAME TIME that it's hitting 9S.
    I'm man enough to admit that this sudden clarity and understanding of Operator 21O's character arc, as well as the revelation that your fight with her can only really end one way, had me bawling my eyes out like a goddamned child.
    *GOD DAMMIT YOKO TARO, STOP KICKING MY HEART IN THE DICK!*

      @Gaawachan
      It’s the other way around. She had come to see 9S as a family member. When she was inevitably taken over, subsumed, and killed, the red girls quoted 21O to MOCK 9S with what they’d taken from him, parroting her to break him down. Remember that the Operators are incredibly sadistic and seemed to relish taunting 9S throughout the entirety of the final segment.

    • @TheKain202
      @TheKain202 3 года назад +5

      The reason why she stopped being so formal and standoffish with him in Route C, is because she realized that Commander gave up and ain't gonna whack him this time. She essentially gave him a hard copy of YoRHa's dirty laundry and sent him on his merry way and didn't have him executed in, according to the official timeline - TWO MONTH LONG time skip between the climax of A/B and start of C. How he reacts to the data and what he does with it was probably a test since the supplementary material makes it clear that she was never really on board with that E Type shit and pretty fucking sick with the ongoing arrangement.
      21O, being his operator she was privy to that, since according to supplemental material - most of the time it's either her or the pod that rat him out after he does an opsie. After she realized that this 9S is here to stay, she dropped the pretense and started flirting him up to live out her "starting a family" thing. But this is a Yoko Taro game and Suffering train was about to crash the station.
      Tl;dr: her change in attitude in regards to 9S isn't the result of the quest. She always cared, but kept him at arms length in order to avoid getting hurt, whenever he gets whacked again.

    My personal reaction to the big revelation was "yeah, I know." The moment it was mentioned in the beginning of A that humanity is conveniently off screen, on the moon, my first thought was, "Oh, so there are no humans and this is a lie that will be revealed later." I was vaguely aware of what the plot of Nier was, so that may have assisted. In contrast, I also thought there was no way there were actually alien invaders; I assumed that was another fabrication. Turns out, there are aliens. For.... some reason.

    • @TheDubiousSalmon

    • @kylespevak6781

      Same. I figured it was all bullshit made by self perpetuating androids, fighting the machines that created them to give them purpose

  • @analcrytic2317
    @analcrytic2317 7 лет назад +220

    I'm a bit disappointed that you didn't bring up Nietzche's "God is dead" quote in this video. As you said, humanity is the androids' God; their creator. So in Automata, God is literally dead. The same is true of the machines. Their creators, the aliens, are also long gone. Two waring Gods, battling each other to the point of extinction. Where does that leave their people? Well, for one, it leaves them without a sense of purpose. The game explores that quite thoroughly. But there are other implications that I think are much more intriguing.
    Nietzche used the phrase "God is dead" to analyze the effects of the age of enlightenment on society. He believed that, as a result of people turning toward science to explain the human condition, people would forgo Christianity. He felt that, without Christianity, society would fall into nihilism due to their newfound lack of an objective moral compass. We see precisely this in Automata.
    The machines are going through their own age of enlightenment. Everything they knew to be objectively true is now called into question. Without their God, they began to question the meaning of their existence and fell into nihilistic tendencies of self-pity and "woe is me." In response, they found those treasures and gave their lives new, individualistic meaning. The concept of individualism and how it relates to machines as a greater whole is incredibly interesting to me. Especially with machines like Engels being references to communism.
    The androids are going through something similar. Just after 9S discovers the truth of humanity's fate, the logic virus breaks out. That name isn't coincidental or inconsequential. It is itself a reference to enlightenment. Androids began to think, to question their existence and became poisoned from it. If I'm not mistaken, the logic virus is also machine-like in nature. I think there's a lot to examine there.
    The fact that Pascal outright namedrops Nietzche makes me feel like this is all definitely intentional and well-orchestrated. It's also a layer that I don't think a ton of people picked up on, so I just wanted to put it out there. I'm not a philosophy major by any means, and it's been months since I played the game, so if I forgot anything or failed to make a connection, I'd love if someone would let me know.

    What I liked with route B is that, while I speeded through A because I wanted to experience the story, since I already knew the story in B I could have a way more relaxed time doing other activities such as fishing and side quests which really got me familiar with the world and the map.

    Could you talk about the thematic connection between certain robots and their philosopher counterparts they were named after? Like Simone de Beauvoir, Jean-Paul Satre, Hegel, and so on? I'm not well versed in this so I feel like there are a lot of references I missed out on.
    Also is there a symbolic connection between the celestial alphabet and the robots/cult of the watchers within Drakengard/Nier? I know the robot bosses had their names spelled out in celestial alphabet when you fight them in route A, but I don't quite get what the towers in route C/D are named after

    • @Yal_Rathol
      @Yal_Rathol 6 лет назад +5

      generally, each philosopher had something to do with the character or boss's place in the game, such as kirkegaard being a religious philosopher (that would be the machine who's death kicks off "become as gods") or pascal being a well versed philosopher who's well known for rationalizing the way humans should live their lives (hence pascal talking about how nietzsche was probably just crazy and being the leader of a village). it all ties in to the theme of "what is the measure of a man?"
      can't help you on the towers though.

    "Amnesia" is another foreshadowing side quest in that regard :)
    Funny thing, as I'm now used to Yoko Taro's convoluted narrative ways after going through Drakengard and the first NieR all those years ago, I set myself up to diligently do all side quests available before any point of no return. Which means by the time our characters first get separated in route A I was already lvl50+. The whole game experience after that was killing bosses under a minute then waiting for all the dialogue lines to trigger while avoiding attacks until they were down for good XD
    Needless to say I didn't enjoy chapter select mode for long (T_T)

I'm not even a huge fan of JRPGs (although you got me to play through all of Drakengaard and NieR) and I still enjoy watching you talk about them. While the death of 2B is sad, it also has a ton of plot-holes that kinda took me out of the experience.
    1. Why were just a few flight units able to overwhelm 2B and 9S? We see 9S take out much more than that by himself (without a flight unit).
    2. She asks the pod to take her away from any androids so that they won't be affected by her virus, but when she finally gets there...she is attacked by 2 androids and A2 is nearby as well. So...did the pod just mess up?
    3. Wasn't it implied that most of the androids already succumbed to the virus? So who is she afraid of infecting (outside of the resistance camp)?
    4. Didn't 2B state that the Pods have a vaccine for the logic virus? She asks them to give one to 9S after he is severely injured. Which is honestly why I assumed that androids had to be badly injured before the virus can take hold (like it needs an open wound or something). So why could the pod not just heal her? Maybe it needs a link to the Bunker? I dunno, it's kinda vague.
    5. Can't 9S curer the logic virus as well? We see him do it later on in the game (on himself). So why couldn't 2B just ask her pod to look for 9S? It can clearly sense where androids are. Why couldn't 9S instantly find 2B for the same reason?
    Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love the game, but the plot-holes lessened the impact of 2B's death for me.

    • @luciano1240
      @luciano1240 3 года назад

      A bit late haha but:
      1. You are comparing 2B and 9S after everything they knew was destroyed and having to kill his companions with a 9S enraged who no longer cares for anything
      2. Low on android signal doesn't mean no androids
      3. You already mention the resistance camp and A2, there's also Jackass and other androids like the ones that are at the entrance of the forest (the food quest, i think)
      4. A vaccine it's not that simply, the fact that the pod proposed a vaccine and 2B doesn't say anything is an indicator that the logic virus, like any other virus, adapts and isn't the same as before route c
      5. 9S clearly can't cure the logic virus, he tried with 2B and himself and in the end both are infected anyway

    *Edit: 10 seconds. I just needed to wait TEN SECONDS and you’d have mentioned it. FUCK ME!*
    @14:33 Isn’t there also a line of dialogue in Automata where 2B explains that when the androids fight and kill their “brains” are wired to make them feel excitement and pleasure in much the same way humans do when they are aroused and climax? I’m like 95% sure it’s there so yes the “****” does both mean “FUCK” and “KILL” at the same time, literally.

    As for Scalebound being canned by MS, I recall reading that Ms suspected not all money invested in it was being put in this game and they feared platinum was syphoning it off to other projects (but my info is based on Twitter, so take that with a grain of salt). One of the greatest losses for the platform as I was really looking forward to Scalebound :(
