Another Nail In My Heart Bass Cover

    This one’s a couple of years old and goes out to my friend, Tim, of Zero-Mod Products, who at some point asked for “anything by Squeeze.”
    I met Tim via RUclips some years ago when I bought one of his thumb-rests for my Rickenbacker. He then contacted me a while after that and asked if I would mind trying out (and giving feedback on) a prototype thumb-rest for the Jazz bass. I did and I thought it was fantastic. I’m a big fan of having my thumb firmly anchored when I play, and Tim’s rests really increased the usable plucking area on my Jazz basses. I sent the prototype back and purchased 2 when they became available. He now makes rests for a number of different Jazz, Precision, MusicMan, and, of course, Rickenbacker basses. I love that his products are so ingeniously simple, as well as the fact that an idiot can install them without any risk of damaging their bass as proven by the fact that I’ve put these rests on a number of my basses. I might add that they are also quite reasonably priced.
    www.zero-mod.co...
    The song is "Another Nail In My Heart" off of the “Argybargy” album which came out in 1980. The bass was played by bassist, John Bentley. I’m curious as to why the song is titled, “…In My Heart” when the lyric is, “...for (or 'from', depending on where you look) my heart”?
    While I’ve never owned a Squeeze album, I’ve always been a fan. Their use of unconventional chords (at least by pop/rock music standards anyway), sophisticated progressions and vocal melodies, etc…always made fertile ground for really interesting bass lines. Difford and Tilbrook are both fantastic writers and musicians but having Jools Holland in the band was the icing on the cake.
    This song has me playing the “Classic 70’s Precision” once again.
    I’ve pretty much got the rest of the week planned out as far as uploads go, except for tomorrow. So, I thought I’d make it a RUSH viewer’s choice day. Leave your selection in the comment section if you like. I'll check the results later tonight, say around 8...just before I go to bed.
    On the Guild B-301 I’ve got…
    - The Spirit of Radio
    - Natural Science
    - Red Barchetta
    And on the Spector…
    - Mission
    - Marathon
    - Fly By Night
    - Where’s My Thing (off Roll The Bones)
    - Open Secrets
    - almost forgot, The Pass

    Excellent! I don't like play alongs, but you did it right; you're playing loud enough in front of the track to be heard but not overpower it, and not so low that it's suspect if you're really playing or just finger syncing, like most play alongs I see. I was looking for an isolated bass to practice with because I sing and play.

    Great cover as always!
    Apart from the usual, well known bass players prior to the 80's, that era seemed to give the bass a more integral role, bringing it to the forefront and a stronger voice.
    As far as Viewers choice, "Open Secrets" gets my vote. Great album, Great arrangement and a turning point in my life :).
    Thanks for all your work and dedication. Enjoy your "staycation"

    • @TJH3113

      Thanks. I agree, but, for some reason, what I remember (and loathe) most about the 80's was the emergence of the "hair" bands. But, when you think about it, there really was a fair amount of great music being put out at that time as well.
      "Open Secrets" is one of my top two on the list.
      Thank "you" for viewing and taking the time to comment.

      Yes, when I sit down to record a video I'll try to do 4 or 5 at a time to make it worth my while because it's not a process I really enjoy doing. In that group of songs, there might be one or two that I've been really woodshedding on, and then I'll add a few that I don't need to put in as much time with. They tend to accumulate quickly. I don't post terribly often, generally every other week or once a month depending, because it's hard to keep up on responding to comments which is something I feel strongly about.

    Very cool, Troy. Squeeze has some great tunes. You're right, they're a bit unconventional. And the bass usually adds to that, he was never just a "root-note" sort of player. I'm good with any Rush cover you want to put up, but Natural Science gets my vote

    How do you have so many basses? Are you wealthy?

    • @TJH3113
      @TJH3113  6 лет назад +1

      I am certainly not wealthy by any definition of the word. But "wealth" is subjective, isn't it? To a person starving on the street, I might be considered wealthy. It's more about what I choose to spend my money on than about how much money I have. My wife and I have no children which is, from what I understand, a "huge" money saver, right there. We are fortunate enough to have no debt beside what remains on the mortgage on our home. I'm not into flashy cars (I drive a 2007 Versa and haven't had a car payment in 7 years or so) or toys like motorcycles, boats, jet skies, or snowmobiles and if I spend $2.15 a day on a cup of coffee, that's a lot. I bring my lunch to work every day. In the last few years we have splurged on a lot of concerts and Broadway shows but that's because we know there will, one day, be a time where we will not be able to afford to do that. Most of the basses were reasonably priced and I could sell them quickly, even for a small loss, and recover most of what I spent. Whatever I lose on them would be worth it, considering the enjoyment I've taken from them. I hope this answers your question somewhat.

    When you pluck, are playing through the strings so that your finger falls on the string below the one you pluck? Are you always doing this.

    • @TJH3113
      @TJH3113  8 лет назад

      I tend to strike the string such that my fingertip is headed towards the body of the bass, as opposed to the ceiling. On the followthrough, after the string has been struck, my finger comes to rest on the string above it. In certain instances, I then have the choice of playing the note my finger lands on, or not.

    • @TJH3113
      @TJH3113  2 года назад

      Thanks Peter. I had to listen to what you were talking about. At this point, most of what I play is second nature and I don't put much thought into it. I did a video a long time ago on the topic of muting and I think I covered the technique I'm using in it. It's in my Tutorials playlist. Essentially, what I'm doing is... I'm alternating my plucking fingers. As one finger plucks the sting, the next finger lands on top of the string. It lands on the string to pluck the note, but, at the same time, it deadens the note that had just been played by the other finger... and so on. I hope you might be able to make a little sense out of that. It was a little difficult to put into words.
