Were you aware of this story? How much do you think this card is worth now?
An sgc3 sold for about 7.25m. The Gretzky card itself was probably above an sgc3 before trimming. It's now become a famous (real 1 of 1) of the most rare and epic card in the history of the hobby. This card will break the record someday.

When I was a kid in the late 60's, I always wondered what the most valuable baseball card was as I was collecting them. I eventually learned it the Wanger T-206 from those adds in the back of comic books offering $$ for this card. Some years later in the late 70's, an article came out in the local Erie Times (Erie, PA) about a local gentleman who collected cards. I still have the article and in there one can see the T-206 Wagner displayed. I always wonder what happened to his card. The value of this card will always find a way to increase, trimming or no trimming.
The 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle rookie sgc 9.5 sold for $12.6 million a few years ago and now adjusted for inflation is over $13 mill!
I know a friend of my dad that is extremely wealthy and has the t206 and 2 unopen box's of cigarettes in mid Atlantic area. When he dies his boys are going to open them. If another t206 is in them the price of them will tank
Yikes
Excellent job with this video. I read the book "The Card" and wished Terry O'Keeffe and Teri Thompson had done a revised addition. Wagner was the only player that I'm aware of from the era to have his card successfully pulled from production, but he wasn't the only one. While Wagner didn't sue American Litho or American Tobacco, there's at least one lawsuit that I could find where a sports athlete did sue over right of privacy - which was a new statute on the books at the time in 1910. I saw a T206 Wagner at a Sheiners Show in Boston several years ago, and then again at the 2022 National. Interestingly, Bill Mastro got 20 months and he was released in 2017 and Doug Allen got 4 years and was released in 2019.
It would be easy for a grading company to spot a trimmed card. All they have to do is measure it. But I still think if it were auctioned today, it would set an all-time record, even more than the recent 52 Topps Mantle sale of over $10M.
I think you’re right
I think the card would go for $25,000,000.
The Gretzky Wagner card is the correct size. It was oversized from the factory and later trimmed by Mastro. It should still be considered authentic altered because it is not how it was from the factory. It's a trimmed card no matter what. PSA gave it an 8, knowing that it was altered.
The overall history of this card, due to it being PSA serial #1 makes it pretty valuable. But I do believe that PSA is hot garbage for originally and knowingly grading an altered example not so. That card should absolutely be changed in the PSA population registry to Altered Example. I don't know if it would change the price, but it would certainly correct an massive wrong done in the history of the hobby.
Keith Olberman did a terrific job on the same subject matter. The most famous individual card in history is trimmed. Amazing trading card history.
It’s a crazy story!
Trimmed or not, PSA would still give it a higher grade than an 89 Upper Deck Ken Griffey Jr that was perfectly centered.
Given the value of this card the PSA grader that graded the card he knew was altered should have been charged with fraud as well. I'd love to know if he was paid a little extra just to grade it.
I've said it a million times money is one of the few things in this world people will lie, cheat, steal and even kill for.
Just came across your site I have been collecting cards (mostly baseball) since the early 80’s. I am from Detroit area.
I'm from Ireland and have no interest in baseball or collecting baseball cards but when I heard about the t206 honus wagner for some reason I was captivated with it.
It transcends the hobby!
There are two cards that make the news or history more often. They are the 52 Mantle and of course this T206 Wagner. Both have my total interest. Thanks for another interesting video. Dan
Thanks Dan
Keep the streak alive my friend. Love watching
Thanks!
General opinion of the bulk submitters and buyers of the Conlon Estate Sale, is that nearly all of the dozen or so 75 Topps Mini George Brett and Yount PSA 10s came from uncut sheets. Most likely there are many other examples.
Your on A hot streak keep them coming... 👍👍👍🇮🇪
My guess is it would sell for a record-breaking amount - because it is the holy grail and the notoriety of the card should offset the alteration (I think).
I agree
It should still be re-slabbed and labeled as authentic altered. It's not a true 8 condition knowing what we know about it.
At the same time McNall and Gretzky owned the t206 they also bought in as partners with John Candy to own the Canadian Football League’s Toronto Argonauts. ActUally got a Candy auto on a CFL magazine cover at a game during that time. And thanks to your tip from an earlier video I think I’ll send that into PSA some day as I had no idea they graded magazine covers.
Only the cover, not the whole magazine, from what I found. As for the Argonauts, wasn’t it McNall who convinced Rocket Ismail to sign there instead of the NFL?
Yes, that’s correct! McNall and his chequebook convinced one of the top college players at the time to come north of the border. McNall seemed pretty legit at the time. It was a huge move and I even shelled out to get the rocket’s rookie Notre Dame pro set football card. It was pretty shocking when McNall went to jail a couple years later. But as an Argos fan at that time we won the Grey Cup in 91 and it was a pretty magical season. And having those high profile owners really created a lot of buzz in the city
CGC grades the whole magazine and authenticates signatures if you were looking for the most reputable company doing so,imo.
@@cardboardcheddah3715 thanks. I think Beckett does too…?
@@SteveAutio that’s cool!
I definitely think the famous aspect and the Gretzky aspect pump this cards value up. Hey I'd love to have it.
Me too
Does the S in PSA stand for shady?
I think it's like the Galarraga Imperfect Game. Perfect games are incredibly rare, yet the story and ripple effect surrounding it makes it far more memorable than had Joyce's call been correct. It has a bigger place in baseball history than nearly every perfect game. Still wish Joyce made the right call 😢
There's a deep lore behind this Gretzky Wagner that makes me want it more than a pure version of the card.
Agreed!
I feel like the card has value just from a media standpoint. Anyone looking to make a name could pay for it by purchasing the card. It stays relevant ect
Good point
He’s a junk wax hero he’s got stars in his eyes 🤓⭐️⭐️
I always wonder how many people get the reference
90% are in a heavy duty safe. 3 months ago I started buying cards from PWCC and storing them in the vault. It's a great way to store your cards. I can pop them up and I can see the card in high resolution. I've got a 47 Homogenized Bond set I purchased years ago. Square corners, thin paper, off white on the backs. Do you know anything about these? They were found in a warehouse back in the 80's. Some folks say they were reprinted in 49. There's a Jackie Robinson in this set.
Bond Bread, right?

Trammell is alltime fav! Let me have it plz lol
I have a 1968 Fergie Jenkins graded psa 9. The card has 3/32 space in that holder from top to bottom. I know this card was trimmed.
The history of the card makes the trimming story now secondary. No one has ever lost money on that Wagner. There may be other T206 Wagners but there will only be one Gretzky Wagner. That doesn't change. And that will continue as long as there are millionaires buying baseball cards.
It should have been labeled authentic altered. I couldn't care less if Gretzky owned it. It's still a rare card, but it's altered, and selling it as anything other than that should be considered fraud.
Go figure the first card PSA ever graded was altered
What I’ve heard it was a uncut panel of t206 that had the Wagner on it so it’s hand cut fun fact treat was owned by brooks robinson
That IS a fun fact!
Holy shit I thought my kid broke my tv!
Lower right side. Lol
What?
@@JunkWaxHero the lower right part of the screen? I thought mt tv was broke.
Believe it or not I have one of those cards Ernest Wagner I'm taking offers I have other cards at the same series I'm not sure if their names at this time they'll blow your socks off if I guarantee😊
What does this say about psa?
It says that PSA is a corrupt and fraudulent grading company. Card grading and collectible grading in general is a sham, and the auction houses are in on it, too.
In a world with more and more billionaires, I'm sure the price will only go up.
I’m sure you’re right.
Psa graded it as not altered because it was Gretzky ,that sucks psa
PSA did not do their due diligence. All cards should be graded equally no matter who the owns the card. Like all Trim and Alter cards that PSA grades, this card should have been put into a plastic sleeve between two cardboard pieces stating a Trim card and not Gradable. I would rather buy a PSA 1 T206 card then buy the famous Wayne Gretzky PSA 8 T206 card, knowing that the PSA 1 card has NOT been Trim or Alter.
Wow this video got made quickly
What do you mean?
@@JunkWaxHerolol it was a compliment, you just posted the question on if there was interest in making it this morning. Well done. Thank you
@@Xstatic26x lol thanks. I posted that last night. Had some time this afternoon so did this.
Gretzky isn't worried about it . He spends that much on dinner .
Cut cards are an abomination. It would break my heart to look at it. Destroying all value.

Heres a small video of the trimmed honus wagner story. Couldnt find the full video
Very cool - thanks for sharing!
About a year ago Mastro did an interview with probstein talk about two guys hobbyist like. Lol. Anyway mastro claims it was clear by the cut that it was cut from a strip. A wagner strip does exist by the way. Mastro claims it was poorly cut so he cut it straight. I am in no way suggesting this is fact just another peice of the story. This cards history has been full of shady characters yet has been an ambassador for the hobby. It embodies the hobby very pure at the base level with a dark underbelly when big money gets involved.
Interesting… thanks for sharing!
There is indeed an uncut strip of 5 cards that includes the Wagner and Cy Young cards. The only one known to exist and it's pretty beat up. They are blank-backed so it's believed to be a printer's proof. The rumor many years ago was that Wagner himself owned the strip and was given to him by the tobacco company as proof that his T206 card was actually pulled from distribution. I recall Ken Goldin saying in an interview that he once owned the strip and regretted selling it. I'm sure it's buried deep in somewhere in a collection now.
I would take a picture of my cards display but not in the mood to be ridiculed lol but I think its cool lol
lol I don’t think anyone would ridicule, but that’s okay

I’m pretty sure he wanted more money than kids buying cigarettes back than. Ball players way back than weren’t making that much playing baseball.

Kendrick could sell and have Judge for 6 years
Lol I don’t think Judge is going to AZ.
Standing in the rain, with his head hung low
Couldn't get a ticket, it was a sold out show
Heard the roar of the crowd, he could picture the scene
Put his ear to the wall, then like a distant scream
He heard one guitar, just blew him away
He saw stars in his eyes, and the very next day
Bought a beat up six string, in a secondhand store
Didn't know how to play it, but he knew for sure
That one guitar, felt good in his hands
Didn't take long, to understand
Just one guitar, slung way down low
Was a one way ticket, only one way to go
So he started rockin', ain't never gonna stop
Gotta keep on rockin', someday gonna make it to the top
And be a juke box hero, got stars in his eyes
He's a juke box hero
He took one guitar (juke box hero, stars in his eyes)
Juke box hero, (stars in his eyes) he'll come alive tonight
In a town without a name, in a heavy downpour
Thought he passed his own shadow, by the backstage door
Like a trip through the past, to that day in the rain
And that one guitar, made his whole life change
Now he needs to keep on rockin', he just can't stop
Gotta keep on rockin', that boy has got to stay on top
And be a juke box hero, got stars in his eyes
He's a juke box hero, got stars in his eyes
Yeah, juke box hero, stars in his eyes
With that one guitar (stars in his eyes)
He'll come alive, come alive tonight, woah
Yeah, he's gotta keep on rockin', just can't stop
Gotta keep on rockin', that boy has got to stay on top
And be a juke box hero, got stars in his eyes
He's a juke box hero, got stars in his eyes
(Just one guitar) juke box hero, got stars in his eyes
How he's just a juke box hero, aah aah aah
Juke box (stars) hero, (stars, stars) juke box hero, (stars, stars)
He's got stars in his eyes, stars in his eyes
