2008 was a spectacular year for RDJ and really skyrocketed him back to A-list status after a long absence. Iron Man, Sherlock Holmes and Tropic Thunder all in one year was an all-timer year for an actor.
Cruise does well as an action movie guy, whether the movie is serious or funny. But my two favorite roles of his are this one and as Frank "TJ" Mackie in Magnolia. It's a much darker film, but he's not playing "Tom Cruise" he's there as a character actor and he's brilliant.
3:12 a joke that EVERYBODY misses. In '69 South East Vietnam was friendly territory. We were on South Vietnam's side and we were fighting NORTH Vietnam. The south eastern portion of the country would have posed no danger to our boys at all.
Kind of amazing that Robert Downey Jr. got nominated for Best Supporting Actor Oscar for this. Had the unfortunate luck of competing against Heath Ledger for THE DARK KNIGHT the same year. In an ironic twist of fate, when RDJ lost the nomination for this, he lost to a performance in a Christopher Nolan-directed movie, and when he finally won his Oscar earlier this year (Best Supporting Actor for OPPENHEIMER), he won for a Nolan-directed movie.
You MUST do a reaction to Galaxy Quest! Amazing comedy. I went to see Tropic Thunder in theatres after highschool one day with friends. Didn’t know what it was and hadn’t seen any ads for it. So glad I went it’s one of my favorite movies of all time.
Fun fact. Tom Cruise read a rough script for this and told Ben stiller he wanted to be in it. So he made up his own character and said: “ I want fat hands, and I want to dance”. The producers were reluctant but then he showed up dressed as the character and started dancing. Everyone agreed to have him in after that.
I love Tropic Thunder, I still think his best role and just as funny was the one that got him Iron Man: Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (2005). I'd highly recommend reacting to it.
Another movie that couldn't be made today is Blazing Saddles, by Mel Brooks. If you haven't seen it, it's from 1974 and is a comedy. Most younger people are pretty shocked when they see it now. I highly recommend it if you haven't already seen it.
One of my favorite reactions to this was because she didn't realize it was Tom Cruise until he came up in the end credit scene. I think it was Ashleigh Burton?
I’ve seen a couple reactions where they didn’t realize until near the end of the movie. But Ashleigh sticks out as one that went all the way to the credits before she realized it was him.
Never be afraid to laugh, Colette. Personally, I think we should all be pissed off that filmmakers are afraid to make great comedies like this. Your reactions are great, by the way!
Hey Colette, it kinda looked like you were uncomfortable watching the film 😂😂. You are right, a script like this movie would not be made in today, Hollywood is too soft, it’s a shame, comedy and satire is one of the best ways to air our a lot of differences in society. I really had fun watching this reaction!! Take care and God bless!!!
My favorite Easter egg in this movie is that bottle at 8:12. It’s called Zheng gu shui and it’s a Chinese herbal medicine used for bruising, and it really does stain your skin 😂😂
After Avengers: Endgame came out, there was talk about RDJ getting an Oscar nomination for Best Actor. He would have been competing against Joaquin Phoenix for his role in Joker. Yes, another actor playing The Joker... It's a weird world.
Great reaction your surprise and delight in the chaos was very enjoyable! I unironically think this is one of the best movies ever made. Stellar cast, multiple actors playing wildly different roles from their usual typecasting, great use of slapstick and irreverence. Ben Stiller wrote, directed and buffed up for this. Top 5 of all time, easily.
When I saw this movie back then, I had no idea that was Robert Downey Jr. Or Tom Cruise. I kept wondering when RDJ would come in. The scene where he took his wig off is when I realized. As for Tom Cruise, I happened to see his name in the credits. Thats when I figured that out. Honestly, im pretty observant. I can usually figure out a movie pretty quickly. So, I felt pretty stupid being fooled through this whole movie. It made it so much better to me.
So glad you like the movie Colette, this is was one of the most funniest movies Ben Stiller, Jack Black, and Robert Downey Jr ever did including Nick Noltie, Tom Cruise, and Matthew McConaughey this movie was pretty much a Parody of Hollywood film making so glad you liked it.
I watched this in the cinemas and I can honestly say I have never been more confused watching a movie like I was at the beginning for this. They were showing the trailers for that years then seamlessly rolled into this movie so they trailers took a really weird turn. We were sitting there watching the booty-sweat trailer and all that after thinking like wtf. It hits VERY different when they follow real trailers without any clear separation so it takes a minute to realize this is the movie already lol. I agree, this movie would never be made today but I really hope we can go back to have fun instead of bitching about every little thing thats slightly uncomfortable. PC is the worst thing that happened to our society. There is a clip of Jamie Foxx on Joe Rogan talking about this movie and how much he loved it. He was invited to RDJ's birthday party and he roasted him for this role, all in good faith. We need more movies like this.
Really smart understanding of all the meta humor and parody work this movie did. Not a lot of people grasp every joke and how ridiculous every character is lol, esp with who they're played by being an ironic choice for a lot of them. A lot of stars in this movie were making fun of themselves, which is brave of them. But, I appreciate how knowledgeable you seem on the whole subject. Made the vid much more enjoyable than other reactions.
@@SFOlson because he always played extremely charismatic pretty boys. And nobody in a million years would have ever guessed that the biggest movie star would star in a hardcore slapstick comedy. Let alone in a fat suit.
Hi Colette. That was fun, so thanks. On the war movie theme, have you considered 'The Thin Red Line'? You don't have to answer, but it's directed by Terrance Malick I think and it stars Jim Caveizel (spelling?) and it's a work of art. Trust me. Must watch even if not on the channel. Anyway thanks for the reaction tonight.
I watched this movie in theaters when it came out, and when he said lance all my friends turned and looked at me lol Lance isn't a common name. Pretty cool to hear you say my name 32:49
I remember seeing this movie on a work related outing...I think only a hand ful of people figured out the Tom Cruise thing. As I recall he took a bit of hiatus there for a while so I didn't pick up on his voice and the makeup team did a fantastic job with the prothestics
"Ain't nuthin, but a thang." They wouldn't make this today for fear of being canceled. It's lame but true. That's why I'm rewatching all the best stuff from back then. If you ever get a chance the Director's commentary adds a whole new layer to the comedy. Stiller, Black, and RDJ all watch it together. It's amazing.
Also, RDJ is poking fun at Russell Crowe. The former quoted the latter almost verbatim with the "...tools for triggering human emotion" Fucking good shit here.
@@jd190d Blazing Saddles definitely couldn't be made these days. I'm surprised it even was able to be made in the 70s. Mel Brooks could get away with anything, though. He's a fucking genius!

I really recommend "Kelly's Heroes" (1970) staring Clint Eastwood, Telly Savalas, Don Rickles, and Don Sutherland. It is a very funny war movie with some great action!
the fact that people still react to this today and laugh means it could be made and people would love it, Hollywood is just too afraid of backlash from the loud vocal minority on social media because it would hurt their feelings
This is probably one of the best comedies of the last 20 years. Ben Stiller actually had the idea for a very long time. When he was young actor, he landed a role in Steven Spielberg‘s Empire of the Sun. Years later he sparked the idea. Tom Cruise was unbelievable. Though the best performance of course has to go to RDJ. He actually got an Oscar nomination for role as Lazarus. However, the academy is notoriously snobby when it comes to comedies. My two favorite genres are comedy and horror which rarely get recognition at the Oscars.
Hello Colette!😊 I knew you would get a big kick out of this and the method acting!😉 I think you would really enjoy "Pleasantville" (1998) which kind of follows a similar theme. Great reactions to this very fun film that could not be made today, Colette!!!🎬👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
