The fact that a 23 yr old wrote, arranged, composed and produced this, while a 19 yr old sang this is utterly insane to imagine. The Wilson family was the definition of musical talent.
1:50 and on is pure genius. Your ear doesn't know what to listen to because all three vocals are so beautiful. What really seems to draw your ear though is Brian's high vocal. Wow. I could listen to that on an endless loop for hours.
+William Murphy Ella Fitzgerald (possibly the greatest female voice ever) always did the same thing - she'd play to an SRO audience doing 2-3 encores, then as she left the stage would ask her manager, "was that okay" !!! Quality !
@@assholebyginger It seems to me that I heard on some documentary somewhere that it was Bruce. I could be wrong, though. It wouldn't really make sense if it was Al, as he wasn't singing on the last part of the song. Only Carl, Brian and Bruce were singing.
The late Carl Wilson had one of the most beautiful, clear tenor voices in music. His delivery, range and phrasing were all on point. This recording is ample proof of that. What's more, his voice sounded as good live as it did in the studio.
Carl's voice was much higher than Tenor. High alto, or even higher. And, no falsetto. He achieved that in his natural voice. He had (still has) the voice of an Angel! Dennis can beat the skins, like an angel, too. God, please grant me the wish, to hit the notes Carl did! steve
@@steveskouson9620 - I'd still place Carl as a tenor (albeit at the higher end of that voice type). Brian had the falsetto range in the group and those duties were often given to him (although Carl could hits those high notes with ease as well),......
The thing that makes Brian such a genius is that you can listen to the raw instrumental tracks w.o vocals, and it sounds so perfect and musically complete as to make you think that adding vocals would only ruin the track. Conversely, when you listen to the raw vox by themselves they too sound so perfect and musically complete as to make you think that adding instrumentation would ruin it. As a songwriter and arranger, and as a producer and mix engineer, Brian was able to take these two pieces of absolute musical perfection, and blend them together into one remarkable sound recording. And he has done this throughout his entire career! For 60 years, next month (Sept. 1961 was the recording of "Surfin", their first song ever) Brian has done this on nearly every track he's ever written! THAT is what makes Brian Wilson a total and complete musical fucking genius!
Sure Brian’s high notes at the end sound amazing as usual, but what chokes me up is when you hear Brian finally chime in at 1:52 with his initial “God Only Knows” part. Like a wrestle tag team moment between brothers , you really find it the initial starting point of distincting the difference between Carl and Brian’s vocal strengths in middle vocal range. Brian, I mean dude. He just comes in with such veracity.
Lol, I know... it's like John Lennon, on the rooftop after The Beatles' January 1969 performance, saying "I'd like to thank you on behalf of the group, and I hope we passed the audition." Yeah, John, you guys made it - you're in, no sweat. And yes, this Beach Boys performance WAS/IS "cool," but both his statement and John's are massive under-statements, lol.
Inverting chords and changing the root notes, it makes this Calico blend of notes and harmonies that literally carries you away audibly. Brian Wilson is a harmonic genius. Brain impairment or not, he had to let this one out of his head. It’s just too fantastic to not share it. Love ya Mr. Wilson. True genius!🤘
Wowww how many comments! I still remember when i uploaded this video, I had collected from internet many unpublished albums of The Beach Boys, one of them at that time was The Pet Sounds Session, was amazing when I could listen for the first time God Only Knows (VOCALS ONLY) Ubicated on the fourth cd of the collection. It was a pleasure has uploaded this video for you guys! This video was uploaded on February 22, 2012, probably meant much more in that time than now, but anyway who cares now? haha. Dude, where are you getting these tracks from? These & the Behind the Sound tracks in particular are amazing. The latter probably being a dedicated machine recording an open talk back mic. But the vocal trks here are clearly solo'd vox tracks, off what I would assume is, at best, a 4tk 1/2" master? The wet, double tracking I further assume is a result of a Sub mixed/bounces..? I'm trying to recognize the reverb. Maybe EMT plate or Foil but sounds more like a real chamber? Do you have any of the actual track sheet notes? Would love to know, some of the tech details? Mic's used?
+GDawg2K2 I wish I knew what all that tech lingo meant! Anyways, you may or may not be aware that all of the isolated vocal tracks/instrumental tracks were on the Pet Sounds Sessions box set, which came out twenty years ago. The album turns 50 in May...
+rangergrrrl No, I didn't know that the vox traxs were included with the box set. ThxU.. But wow.. 50y.. say it aint so.. As an engineer who started in the 70s but came of age in the 48trk (24tkx2) studios of the 80s. As such Im always amazed at what was accomplished with so little around the mid 60s..

This is a good proof of why Paul McCartney considers this song as his favourite of all time...
True :) thanks for your comment Paola Guerra!
Not true, he loves seasame street
McCartney said it was "The greatest song ever written". Could probably be one of his favorites too, who knows.
One of my favorites and Pete Townshend's too.
Right!

Freakin amazing.
Spot on comment.
Brian has a great ear for everything no pun intended.
what an insightful post. Yes, pure genius!
I love how at the end they ask how was that? You just sang one the greatest songs ever written amazingly, and you ask was that cool?

William Murphy that was Brian. They fought over whether or not to keep it on the final track 😁
Actually, I think that was Bruce.

Carl Wilson was extremely underrated as a vocalist
The harmony at 0:56 is awesome.
Shiftless Drifter the slide from 1:09 to 1:11 is why I listen to The Beach Boys

Perfect harmony....you can't fake talent, and the Beach Boys had it in spades..simply beautiful!!!!!

I was 8 when this was released.
Even at that age I knew it was perhaps the greatest pop record ever conceived.
Yep it’s gorgeous ❤❤❤
The Beach Boys were a chamber choir who sang pop songs. Pure perfection.
such a perfect blend between full voice and falsetto.
"How's that, was that cool?"
Me, a normal mortal: UH, YES 😳

Still blows my mind 53yrs later. Carl Wilson, an unbelievable talent.
This is the song that Paul McCartney (one of the greatest song writers in the world) said was the greatest song ever written. :)
I love The Beach Boys but I think I might actually prefer the isolated vocal sessions. It's incredible.
Same!

Nah, it means as much to those touched by it everyday since 1966 when it came out originally. Thanks for sharing.
Carl Wilson had the voice of an angel. In fact, it says so on his grave. RIP Carl. Heaven has the best band. You sing with them.
That fadeout gives me goosebumps.
one of the best songs period.. makes me cry and euphorically happy..
Pure genius. Best band vocals ever, for me.

Huh? I don’t hear different take cuts.
And even now how many years later these voices are still beautiful. WOW what a pleasure to listen to this.
I feel like Al deserves some "Mad Chops" credit here, carrying the second round. Well done by all. ...except Mike. Lovin' it up Real Good.
Al isn't on this song. Neither are Mike and Dennis. It's Carl, Brian and Bruce Johnston.
His vocals, just give me a nostalgic vibe, even first hearing the song I felt nostalgic. My god, love this song to bits
Amazing! They make it sound so easy but the most hardest melodies and harmonies to sing, ever are from the Beach Boys. Endless perfection.

Its the kind of music you would hear in heaven
OMG! Even the Beach Boys say "with ou choo" !! 🤣
A-WE-SOME. Voices from heavens. The original is my all time favorite song, but this... wow. My mind is blown. Best band of all times.
Is this David z. CMU grad..😏
Haunting.
Beautiful.
That last minute of the song is the best thing I've ever heard! Period!
Great use of double tracking the vocal, so impressive
Gorgeous, angel voices
At the end. "How was that?"
Yep...not bad at all . Just the greatest vocal track ever 🥲🥲
As close to perfect as it gets.
This is very cool. Saw Brian Wilson perform Pet Sounds live the other night. Amazing.
Carl Wilson, what a voice
Great song from the awesome Beach Boys. Wonderful vocals

Perfection. Absolute perfection.

Amazing. For a different experience, listen at 0.75 speed.

“There’s always a lighthouse, a man, a city.”
Bruce Johnston did a great job on the outro with Brian.
