- I did not make this song, nor do I claim the rights to it. I merely uploaded this because I could not find this on the Tube and it's pretty good. So yeah, enjoy.
The brilliance here isn’t just Brian’s complex harmonies, it’s also that he seemed to know exactly when to just have ONE voice. He knew how to not over-do things
Bully Maguire?? What are you doing here
@@antebellumstage look at little goblin junior
@@freddiewilliam8797gonna cry?
Well it's a sea shanty so that's kinda the idea of the song
I struggle with this issue when making harmonies 😂
My favorite part is the whole thing.
I like that it feels like just a group of guys singing a shanty. Aka, the whole thing too
@@Schizniit that's what it is lol
I totally agree.
sang this along with 40 dudes i didn't know at a bar in rochester NY. it was amazing!.. drunk bar song..in harmony gentlemen, if you please
Damn sick! I live in Rochester, do you remember what bar you were in?
@@nopeteys2424 don't remember the name, this was in '07
Four part harmony? No, *_FORTY_* lolz
what an experience, i’d never forget that
That sounds incredible
1:17 is one of the most beautiful things I've ever heard.
actually anything from 0:00 onward ... but yes that's a special moment
There are certain vocal harmonies, certain notes, even certain levels of volume, that will usually unexpectedly just cut right into my soul. That part at 1:17 is a good example. I once saw Ladysmith Black Mambazo live, and the first note they sang, it was so rich and deep and complex, my chest just froze and I was fighting back tears. Totally without warning. It was like a powerful drug passed my blood-brain barrier, I had no control over it.
True!!! Also check "Because" by the Beatles! :)
Does anyone know exactly how many vocal channels are being used here, including duplicate parts?
Essa foi na alma
The beach boys the best vocal band in rock history
yes they are
So did The Little River Band😂❤❤❤
Hollies n the Turtles had awesome harmonies too
agree #1 ever......the 60's-70's had the best music/bands...you had to be there
I'll be joining the 1:17 club this very second. Also:
"Sorry, all the chords for vocals have been invented and used."
Beach Boys: "Hold our beers." 1:42.
you mean "Hold our surf boards?"
You're wrong, doc. They HAVE been invented and used.
@@chipgaasche4933 Curse that J S Bach! To be fair though this is a superb recording of a simple folk song.
It's not just about the chords, it's about the timbre, the sound colour, the singing+recording+mixing+mastering choices. That's what makes this so unique. Brian's genius cannot simply be put on paper as with classical composers it HAS to be experienced through his recordings.
Well, not for Mikey "Love."
He is drinking ginger ale.
steve
I actually thought this was a myth. I've been wanting to hear an acapella version of this for 40 years.
Thanks You Tube!!
Johnny May I would. Care to provide a link?
Dark Helmet like what?
The whole of pet sounds is available a Capella. Truly worth a listen.
1:17-1:23 and "Run Run Oooh" in Wouldn't It Be Nice are two of the greatest things ever put to tape. By FAR.
Gary Johnson I would say my favorite ever is on Wouldn’t It Be Nice. The ending harmonies when they all sing “talk...” and Brian is singing talk about it. It sounds so pretty.
@@elchingon6759 yes!!
With you on the 'run run'.
Its amazing for how dense and full the instrumental backing tracks are on Pet Sounds the vocal arrangements and harmonies by themselves are just as amazing. Brian truly was a musical prodigy, he had a special talent to be able to hear 5 part harmonies.
Not just to hear, but to compose and arrange them with his own personal style, AND work them with the other band members until they’re all blended perfectly
With only one ear!
Proof that even what is basically a diary entry of an absolutely terrible day can be made beautiful with the right harmonics and melodies. The Beach Boys were brilliant.
I love the vocal only tracks. The genius of Brian Wilson's understanding of vocal harmony is unbelievable!!
Agreed!!! Plus I think this is the greatest harmonization the BBs every did!
Totally agree with both of you. To show how insanely brilliant Brian Wilson is, I heard an interview with him, maybe Larry King, and they asked if he had anything he’d want to do over. He said the vocal harmonies in Sloop John B.
Crazy.
Holy cow, how have I never heard this? Some of the tightest most incredible harmonies I've ever heard. Goosebumps the whole time.
Try god only knows with the acapella tag my friend.
At 1;49 and 1:51, when Brian sings "Hooome . . . ' you expect him to go higher on the second run thru, but instead he brings it back to the first level again Instead of "hooome, why dont you let me go (up) hooome", he goes "hooome, why dont you let me go (down) hooome" to where he starts the first "hooome". It blows me away every time I hear it. Listen for it.
His voice goes up in my head. It's amazing.
The vocals on this song are so beautiful, they almost make me weep. Maybe the most beautiful the BBs ever did.
Why am I crying in the cabin rn
Maybe you want to go home?
1:47 gets me every time. This is one of the best songs ever written
You know it wasn’t written by The Beach Boys right?
dang, same
Rachael Short The music very much was
This is one of my favorite parts in any song I’ve ever heard it’s absolutely amazing even without instruments
@@rachaelshort1704 Not the lyrics...the arrangement makes it. The lyrics could have been about turds in a punch bowl and it would have been great.
What they did is called "doubling." They sing a track twice. Sing it once and then listen to the playback while singing it again. Gives it a richer feel. Brian used recording techniques which were way ahead of his time.
First verse : al or brian
1st chorus : brian an al
2nd verse : Mike love, brian, carl and Dennis, Bruce, and al with overdubs
2nd chorus : all the 6 beach boys
3rd verse : al and the others guys of the band
3rd chorus : all the 6 beach boys
And double every track
First verse almost certainly Al Jardine.
@@commanderstraker1082 ok
First verse, is most definitely Brian
First is Brian. Second is Brian (low) and Al (high); 3 is Mike. And finally Carl
The third verse is also Brian.
Wow... wow... wow.... after all these years... this is an absolute vocal masterpiece.. not sure why I never decided to listen to this specific song with vocals only... Absolute PERFECTION... You can hear uniquely hear each Beach Boys' voice... just perfection
Sublime. Don't know how any vocals could be any better
No other Musician comes close to Brian, he truly is a Genius. I prefer the Beach Boys over the Beatles. I could go on and on but the Beach Boys are my life.
Art Apollo I prefer the Beatles but they had 3 1/4 songwriters in their group so no beatle alone could compete with Brian wilson
I mean with all due respect to Mr Wilson he's not the most talented musician of all time..
@@benjamincox4211 John Lennon or Paul McCartney in their careers were better than Brian Wilson
My favorite Beach Boys song!!
Thanks to Brian for his persistence in getting this right. Incomparable!
THAT is amazing and is pure incredible talent, The harmonies just blew me away. Thank you for putting this out there. WOW!!
in the early 90s, I was the only kid in my elementary school who loved the beach boys. other kids always made fun of me. fuck em. the joke is on them because beach boyness is next to godliness HAHA
I grew up in Hawthorne in the sixties - we all have our burdens.
ShopTalkWithJason I'm 15 and Elvis, Johnny Cash, Beach Boys and many others are my favorite and I get teased a lot about it
Love The Beach Boys
listening this with head phones its just like your sitting in front of them performing this its so magical
The harmonies at the end, from 2:47 and out are MIND blowing.
1:17. sledgehammer to the walls of the heart.
I have to agree, 1:17 IS amazing.
Those harmonies are just awe-inspiring.
Holy shit. These guys were great.
I am honoured and humbled to have even existed on the same planet as people with this level or talent. The purety, joy and magic of this IS timeless.
I wonder in 40yrs will they say this off Bieber or One Direction? Mmmm!
tjordulf also better than Kanye West
This is...perfection.
Their killer harmonies I love it.
1:17........ angels.............
sokerplair agree
I can't stop crying listen this song, it touches some part of me I can't put in words
moment magique en 2023 quand j'écoute cette œuvre
The closest we, as humans will ever get to hearing real angels' voices.
I absolutely adore the Beach Boys and I hope the next generation adore them too ♥️ So simple and timeless
Introduced my daughter to this today and she was blown away as I was and still am ever time I hear this masterpiece!
How can there be any thumbs down? Unbelievable!
Mike "Love" fans.
steve
Funny, the Kingston trio says " break up I want to go home" And for the most part the Beach Boys say " broke up I want to go home".
But if you listen carefully several times thru out the song, someone says break up over the other harmonies broke up. Its very noticeable in the first 2 part harmony. All Jardine says up Break up to Brian's Broke up.
That's because Al Jardine brought the song in for Brian to consider...He was used to the original lyric ...which was break up...
Ha, I read somewhere that Mike Love refused to sing the original wording because he thought it sounded too stupid
DBA LGP That would make sense 😂😂
The last six seconds are gorgeous
This is the vocal track from the recorded song. Geeez. It really drives home the amazing harmonies these guys produced. CBS Sunday did a seg on 1962 today. Even after living through it, I was surprised to know that the first Bond movie hit the screen, the Rolling Stones and Dylan jumped onto the music scene in a big way, and both the Beatles and the Beach Boys both cut their first album in 1962. For some reason I just thought the Beach Boys were around longer.
Brian Wilson is unmatched hitting those crazy high notes.
If you listen closely at around :55 you hear one of the voices sing "I feel so break up" instead of "broke up." "I feel so break up" was the verse the way the Kingston Trio sang it.
Anyone notice this?
1:40 - 1:55 this section was removed from here and used for the a capella part after the third verse, which occurs at 2:48.
I'm amazed at their harmonising and the fact someone knows which notes and tunes work well together. I'm sure if the vocals were isolated it wouldn't sound nearly so good and that's the beauty of it.
The other great talent is being about to sing one tune, whilst tother around you are singing different notes to you.
It sounds like it shouldn't be too difficult until you try doing it. It's one thing holding a tune, another holding a tune whilst not being distracted by another person.
This is fucking sick. Sick. These guys sit on top of the heap with The Beatles, and few select others.
Wow! With a couple of extra seconds... Perfection. thanks for sharing.
Great post. Pretty much makes me understand why they’re singing and we’re listening
Swear to God I was born 20 years too late. How much talent does a person have to make The Beatles nervous?
Jeffrey Schwartz Brian's the man to be sure. Still, their friendly "competition" led both groups to put forth their finest works. I really like how the Beach Boys led the Beatles to do a "Beach Boys" style song with "Back in the U.S.S.R." BTW, I always say I was born 20 years to late also. I was born in 1970 & I grew up listening to 50's & 60's music... can't be topped!
screenpuller If you want to know more about it, look up a movie called "The Wrecking Crew" You can get it on itunes. It's about the people who actually made the music you heard on the radio, not the groups themselves.
+Jack D. Ripper In the case of Pet Sounds it was Brian Wilson AND The Wrecking Crew working together, which Carol, Hal and the gang fully acknowledge. Wilson is a genius.
Brian could do alot more than 4 people together.
The Beatles are the most overrated group in music history. They are the original "right time, right place, right people to make them famous" story, a story that has been repeated hundreds of times from The Beatles all the way to Justin Bieber to most of the popular music today.
MIND BLOWING, BRIAN HAD TO OF HAD TOTAL MIND CONTROL OVER THE GROUP TO PUT THIS TOGETHER, THE BEACH BOYS: "A WORLD CLASS MUSICAL TREASURE"
I know the Beach Boys were a world class act, but after hearing the craftsmanship and compositional brilliance of this tune, world class is much too small for this
The first "I feel so broke up" sounds like someone (Al?) sung "break up" instead. I'm amused.
I sing it "break up" cause that's what I thought my original record said back in 1958, And I think that's what the Kingston Trio sing also. And I didn't have a hearing loss then. I was surprised the Beach Boys sang "broke up" It sounds OK either way.
yes. Sounds like that. at 0:53
It is "break up". Beach boys sing Broke Up
Okay, looks like it's time to clarify... I actually do know the original was "break up". That's why I was amused, not confused. And I guessed it was Al because he's the "folkie".
Kelly Harris He couldn't help himself haha...I guess he knew it would get covered up with the music added in.
Very special. This is singing !!! Whow, what a wonderful thing. Luv it
Best version. Acapella versions are challenging.
Nothing on earth like it
Looks like I found my funeral song.
Agreed. Except the first tune will be "Child in Time". The Deep Purple in rock version.
Also "Behind blue eyes", the Who.
And people who don't go to the wake... 😉
Wow. Just, wow. Perfection.
I like some of them sing "I feel so break up" and others are singing " I feel so broke up!'
0:53 you can hear Al say break instead of broke
Yes, 1:17 but, have y'all heard 00:00 - 3:16 tho?
Backing vocals right after 1:01
1:30
1:41
1:47
1:51
2:48
2:51
Pet Sounds! The best Rock album in American history.
MIND...BLOWN...
From 1:16, the harmonies just blew me away!
One of my favorites of theirs. Really cool to hear it like this.
Amazing harmonies. I like how one of the "break up" (Carl?) cuts is hidden in the mix 🤘
That’s just after 0:52
haha yeah I think that was Al
They sing broke but one of the sings break.
THEIR HARMONY WAS AMAZIN
NO AUTO TUNE!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Just their voices.
Simply Beautiful.
Awesome thanks for taking your time to upload!
Heavenly harmonies
What a great song
Wow, fantastic loving the vocals only
No words.
Thats right. Its a technique "voice layering" or "overdubbing." Its used quite a bit to get the effect of all the harmonies. Of course there is more to it than what I can say here but you can do it at home nowadays if you have a looper or maybe a Digitech 5 Vocoder or a TC Helicon Voice 2 Live which I have.
The best harmonies in the business 👍 period
2:51.....the sound of friendship
David Norman 2:51
Almost unbearably wonderful
I believe that the vocal effects in this song were due in part to Brian overdubbing tracks of him and other Beach Boys singing the same or harmony tracks. Anyone who could comment on that, please do! I recall the first time I heard this album in 1972 like it was yesterday, btw.
They were far from the first to record this song, but this is untouchable.
0:54
lol one of them sings "break up" instead of "broke up"
Al
J P yes it's because he loves folk music and I think that the Kingston trio sing ''break up''
Kingston Trio lyrics: "Break up - I want to go home" However, at 0:54 you can juuuuust hear someone say "break" instead of "broke" as the BB lyrics are.
This shit is almost better than with the music. You can hear the intricacies of the harmonies. Quite stunning.
So incredible!
Harmonies from heaven
Fookin' 'ehll.
wow this is so good, no suprise the Beatles were inspired by them
The Beach Boys knew where reach others harmony was going
Lovely song - made its way in the Midland Bank (now HSBC) advert
They should've used this ending in the final cut. I like this version so much better
I want to go home for listening this song .
i think i like it better this way
shew....amazing
love
Incredible 🎶
very nice thank you
Oh my God!!

Brian was doing overdubbing stuff over 40 years ago that we have just caught up with now. No words.

what's that supposed to mean? obv ur reference is about 2days draw with west brom? (I hope) but that has nowt to do with this song?? Or the footy chant taken from it?
