@@SheyCandym While I definitely don't think all this was was intended by the Riot Games artists that originally designed the characters years ago, I think it's pretty reasonable to think that the creatives behind Arcane might have noted the coincidental similarities in the source material and chosen to emphasize them in their adaptation as a thematic tool.

They both directly reflect and embody opposite ends of Vi's personality.
Vi's capacity for rage is represented in Jinx and Vi's capacity for love is represented in Cait.
The two people Vi cares about more than anything in the world are two sides of the coin she herself is flipping.

    • @aetherwolf9288
      @aetherwolf9288 18 дней назад +27

However the reason we didn’t see this in action in season 1 is because the theme is duality and as such introducing a 3 body problem in the mix would go against the theme.
This leaves Vi with 2 Dualities she can’t get rid of because she can’t detach herself from either because she loves both sides equally (one through action [the none violent part] one through words [the protective violent part]).
This is going to change in season 2 (going in line with the theme of the season) because Caitlyn will become more violent because of the death of her mother (either at the start or mid of the season) going down the same path as Powder while probably being saved by Vi as she changes to accept that history is repeating itself, leaving all three of them at the same character development.

To add on, Caitlyn handles weapons like any trained professional would. Her movements are specific and shows she has respect to what a gun can actually do, which is kill. Jinx on the other hand, is often seen spinning her pistol and running around with her finger on the trigger of her machine gun. This would be reckless if done IRL because you shouldn't have your finger on the trigger unless you intend to shoot, but adds to the self-taught nature of Jinx. Lastly, Jinx's minigun has a trigger that is very much unsafe and easy to set off, but I think adds to the recklessness.

  • @aranthur

Watching this just made me realize that the most impactful thing both of these characters did in the opening scene was drop something because they were trying to carry too much. For Powder it was obviously the crystal, but for Cait dropping one of the items she's carrying for Jayce is what alerts Vi to the fact that someone is coming. If not for that, Jayce might have gotten the door open before they could block it with the chair
Also interesting, when these two accidents happen, Powder doesn't even notice. It takes her 3 full episodes to remember she dropped one of the most dangerous and valuable items in Piltover and connect it to the explosion, but Cait realizes immediately she dropped a random piece of scrap metal Jayce bought in an undercity junk shop and stops to try to pick it up and keep it from being left behind, despite how full her arms are

with act 2 out, it appears piltover and zaun might be uniting to some extent against noxus. this idea kinda destroys the tension and the world-building built up between the two cities * in season 1, which would be a bummer * but as someone who has followed the lore of the game for quite some time now, i think i knew it would lead up to this. i just couldn't think piltover would go into an all-out war with zaun, all the while noxus heavily benefiting and possibly leeching from the damage.

Now that part 1 of season 2 dropped, this video is even more interesting. It's also massively interesting to see that those two are pretty much switching places in the story because of their respective grief. It's also very fascinating to see how much cait's perceived virtue was a direct consequence of her never experiencing grief or injustice.

there's another parallel between the two that I noticed. In episode 6 Jinx gets hurt, a cut to the leg. Later we see her alone, stitching it with a stapler. Cait also gets hurt later on in the season, and she goes home where her father stitches her up. Both are getting hurt, both are victims of violence enacted upon them leaving them wounded, so there is the similarity, but the difference is their environment, having that different upbringing. One can count on support, the safety of home, a refuge to retreat to. The other can't even use real stitches but uses a stapler, living in an environment that simply does not provide safety.

  • @aetherwolf9288

Caitlyn is the spirit of Piltover the same way Jinx is the spirit of Zaun.
    Piltover is progress.
    Zaun is inferiority.
    Jinx is created by progress.
    Caitlyn fails because of inferiority.
Jinx accepting who she is means she can’t fall deeper. She is grounded. She can „kick back“.
However at the end of season 1 both are at a point where they are what they didn’t wanted.
Jinx is alone and Caitlyn is weak.
So now we can look at Vi/Vander and Sevika and through Sevika at Silco and Vander again.
What this all concludes to Caitlyn needs to become more Zaunlike while Jinx needs to become more Piltovian (aka she needs to become Powder again) to truly get what they want.
    God I love Arcane!

Jinx should stay Jinx, what she needs though is to accept her past as Powder. She needs to accept she messed up without letting it mean thats all she'll ever be good for.

    • @aetherwolf9288
      @aetherwolf9288 11 дней назад +3

@ the problem is now with season 2 (I assume you watched act 1 now otherwise mild spoiler ahead)
we know that Jinx and Powder are different personalities, and we know that Powder still is part of Jinx (through Arcane season 1 What could have been).
Jinx is a trauma response and not good for Powder.
The reason she raised her voice against Sevika in season 2 episode 3 is because Powder recognizes that her sister still protects Jinx and those close(ish) to her against Caitlyn (aka the enforcer, like it should be).
Because the theme of season 2 is change and Jinx is the main force of change pairing it with the fact that „every character becomes a little bit of the opposite“ from season 1 (a direct citation from the creators after season 1) it is just natural to assume that Powder returns.
Also we saw Vi (in the trailer) working with Ekko while Ekko is painted in the colors of Jinx fighting against Piltover. Vi would never accept Jinx.
And as the story between the sisters concludes with season 2 the initial question needs to be answered once and for all (Are we still sisters).
If you wish for me to continue I could give more proof why I think this.

  • @chromesniper00
    @chromesniper00 16 дней назад +30

Christian Linke mentioned that they considered their League gameplay to reflect how they fight in game (i.e. how Vi as a jungler always jumps into fights fists first just like she does in the show) but I wonder if they also drew inspiration from their in-game abilities/character design philosophies to write their parallel character arcs in the show?
In League, Caitlyn and Jinx both play the same role (ADC), all of their skills are parallels with one another (Q is a damage ability, WE are traps/slows/escape tools, and R is their long range ultimate). Just from those abilities alone, they sound like the same character right? What makes them different is their character design - where with Caitlyn you're rewarded for being more methodical and intentional with your traps and positioning, Jinx rewards you for being more scrappy and chaotic.
So I love the fact that in the show, their characters are direct parallels of each other. Truly makes us wonder if circumstances had been different for Powder, would she have been more like Caitlyn?

Arcane is the first show that truly has raw, conflicted characters that remind me of the real world, and as such, I use my life experience to reflect on these characters. Unusual for entertainment media, really
So, I think the different shades and hues of their hair, something that can be dyed but nevertheless they got through genes instead choices & of their environment, hints that if little Cait & Powder had the chance to mingle, their similarities still wouldn’t have been enough to bond. “What could’ve been” suggests a better outcome now lost, but doesn’t actually say how much of a stretch, or how tangible the possibility ever was. It implies a list of possibilities that could be summed up in someone’s dream, and we all dream differently
Pulling from my experience, there are several people with similar behaviors who like similar things to me that I actually got to chat with in relatively calm settings, but we just couldn’t vibe. Conversations quickly became small talk & I quickly found myself struggling to even care what these individuals have to say. If our eyes meet, I greet. If we’re stuck in the same area or group, I small talk JUST to avoid making the situation awkward. The people I truly vibe with, we’re similar but so different and I don’t have to talk much because we care enough to pick up on body language & learn each other’s unique behaviors

I think missed shots are just as important for storytelling in arcane tbh. In the fight between Ekko and Jinx on the bridge, we see she wins in the flashback as they're kids. Yet in the present she has a shot lined up in time but doesn't take it.
Everyone always notices Ekkos struggle to not see Powder anymore but no one talks about how she was also aware it was just like their childhood game. I think she held the shot because she was struggling too.

    (Season 2 Act 1 spoilers)
"We will show them all" from Silco to Jinx is basically the same as "your mother will have justice" from Mel's mom to Caitlyn, furthering the parallel. Each of these quotes propel the respective character down a (presumably, we haven't really seen the results of the latter yet) dark path

  • @aranthur

I definitely think the fate of the city is going to end up being in the hands of Cait and Jinx in season 2. Both are victims of a cycle of violence that started decades before they were born, and yet all the weight of it and the responsibility to end that cycle will fall on them because of the failings of previous generations
Their first instincts will obviously be to end the violence through decisive victory as we've seen in trailers, but I don't think that's going to work. And ultimately if these two girls can't find a way to get over their personal conflict, Piltover and Zaun also won't ever get over their conflict
But! I think we'll see some personal growth from them both in season 2 where they begin to question whether their anger and their personal desires for justice/revenge are more important than the cities (and the pink-haired woman) that they love, and this potentially puts them in a unique position to make the first step toward peace by having one of them extend an olive branch, not of forgiveness exactly, but of mercy and compassion and understanding, with the hope of the other doing the same when the opportunity comes

Also, in the break up scene (S2 Act 1) after Vi stopped Cait from taking the shot. Vi says “if it’s Jinx’s blood in my veins. Why’re you the one acting like her.”
It further shows that Cait is becoming apathetic and a more chaotic shooter. Instead of cait’s one track mind helping- she has become narrowly focused on revenge to the point she doesn’t see how Vi is empathizing with her having also gone through similar trauma.
Where Jinx had one conversation with Sevika about Silco’s death then building camaraderie enough for Jinx to try to fix things by making Sevika a new arm- Cait on the other hand doesn’t see how her and Vi are in a similar boat (both having lost a parent to Jinx.)
Cait isn’t alone she has Vi, someone who will hold her when she cries although in her eyes it’s not enough and is willing to gas Zaun anyways.
Cait is rejecting her destructiveness where Jinx is now accepting.
She is also losing empathy and seeing Zaunites as animals, while VI’s trauma made her more empathetic and even willing to become an enforcer to help Cait. Pushing a rift between Cait and Vi similar to the rift between Vi and Jinx.

idk if this is mentioned but hooo boy is the show not only leaning into this heavily in s2 but showing both parallels and foils in how they spiral and how the world is affected by their spiralling based on their respective socioeconomic positions in society and what power or what little power they hold

Great video! I was thinking about your video "Why does Arcane feel greek?" and in it how you talked about how Vi's fatal flaw and how it was "extreme responsibility for others especially powder" and it got me thinking about how now in season 2 Act 1 Vi started to do the same thing with Caitlyn and it makes sense. And I also agree with what people have been saying about this video making even more sense now that there's season 2 there is so many parallels between Caitlyn and Jinx's Arc's.
Looking forward to your videos on this season:)

Because of this video I'm imagining younger Jayce and Caitlyn as older sibling archetypes to Powder in an Alternate Act 1
Vander and the Kimmeran family stop Silco. Hextech is combined with a Refined Shimmer to help both halves of the city prosper
Heimmdinger and Singed work together to cure Viktor's illness. Grayson mentors Vi.

I doubt you’d remember but a couple months back I asked for advice on making videos kind of like you and you actually gave me a super in depth helpful answer and it’s probably one of the biggest reasons I finally got around to writing and finishing my first real video (on a new channel.) who knows if it’ll go anywhere but I appreciate you having taken time to point me in the right direction :) thank you

4:52 (Mild spoilers? for S2) Jinx’s dissociation with weapons is also highlighted very directly with her voiceover during her underwater scene with Silco. She says that he’s gone because “someone put a bunch of holes in him” neglecting the fact that it was her own hand that pulled the trigger. As a casual viewer, it was actually this scene that made me realize how dissociating the experience is for her!

Great video! You really contextualized a lot of small threads that I noticed but didn’t realize went as deep as they did! If you find this vid doesn’t get as many views as you’d like try changing the “Part 1” in the title to season 1. I almost didn’t click on the video because I thought “oh I’ll just wait for the second part and watch them together.”

Why don't they give an eight year old a gun? Answer is in the question.
Also - nobody in the group even carries a knife. This may be to avoid escalation, a general rule of the streets, and/or because it's a problem when Enforcers search them.

Not to mention, if you’re here after Season 2, Act 2 both Caitlyn and Jinx had empty voids in their lives after experiencing grief and Vi leaving/was pushed away, and those voids got filled by questionable and negative influences. The differences between the two were that Jinx’s void got filled when she was a child and didn’t know any better, and Caitlyn, being a grown adult and knowing better. Both were clouded by grief.

And one of paralles that will be in 2 season:
    Jinx back her dad(Warwick)
Caytlin lost her mom(Jinx kill her and other council).
And i think Cait do it same with Warwick.

I don't think the kids in part one had the means of acquiring a gun. I don't see how so many miss this. There are no guns in the Under city that the residents use or even look to produce out side of Jinx. She looks to be the only gunsmith in Zaun. In season is any Zunite show handling a firearm besides Jinx. Or that is not constructed by Jinx. While someone had to train Jinx, it was clearly not someone Silco kept around.

Only 3 episodes into s2, it is incredibly interesting how the similarities/differences have and will continue to evolve.
On the similarities between them: Ooo boy. Both are coping with the loss of their parent as their respective city groans under the chaos and power vacuum left behind, both the result of Jinx pulling the trigger. Both, in their grief and anger, have pushed away Vi-someone they genuinely love, someone who wants to love them back, but is pushed away by the violence they have chosen to immerse themselves in. Both have been adopted as the “unifying symbolic leader” of their city, both with an older, powerful woman (with her own agenda at play as well) as their backing force, silencing any opposition through force and intimidation.
And on the differences: Plain and simply, Jinx and Cait seem to be going through the same character arc beats but from completely different directions. Jinx has taken in a child in a moment of uncharacteristic sympathy. Cait nearly killed that child in a moment of uncharacteristic rage. Jinx spent all of the first season building a gun, while Cait loses hers early on-a great detail that you mentioned in this video. But by the end of the very first episode Caitlyn has built her own hextech gun, while Jinx’s is torn to pieces in their first encounter.
The death of a parent already turned one girl Vi loves into Jinx. And the way things are going, it just might turn another.

Interesting video, tho I feel like it struggles to get the point across. Essentially through Cait and Jinx the writers are exploring the way how two relatively similar people can get radicalized into opposing ends of the spectrum, culminating with not only becoming the leaders of their respective people and cities, but also ideologies (totalitarianism/anarchism).
To be fair, it's far more obvious now after Act 1 of S2.

I have to say that some parallels seemed a bit forced, and I didn't believe that these two characters were really that connected, but after watching Act 1 of S2, damn!
Cait is becoming a sort of Jinx, which Vi clearly tells her!

Since Act 3 Cait is Ep 1-2 Powder, I expect S2 Cait to be Ep3-Act2 Jinx. Though instead of her driving force being guilt and a desperate need to dissociate from it, I can see Cait's driving force being blame - at Jinx for firing that shot, at Silco and Singed for creating the hellscape that forged Jinx to begin with, at any surviving Council member that, in her eyes, should have been the ones lying in the pool of their own blood instead of her mother, and most of all at herself, for being vulnerable enough for Jinx to kidnap into that tea party, for being too open and sheltered to stop her.
